Taylor Made’s Stallion Program on the Rise

Since the loss of Taylor Made’s signature stallion Unbridled’s Song seven years ago, the farm has worked to regain its footing in the ever-evolving, ever-competitive business of stallion development. The first step, finding prospective stallions that fit a specific program, often proves to be the most difficult.

“What do you look for in a stallion?” asked Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor. “The one thing we know is nobody knows who is going to be a great stallion. If anybody tells you they do, they’re not telling the truth.”

Ben Taylor, Vice President of Taylor Made Stallions, added that once you find a good fit, the price tag behind the prospect can often make consideration unrealistic.

“We are constantly on the lookout, but the market has been so difficult in the last few years and the competition so fierce,” Ben said. “Everybody seems to be after the same ones and the payouts are just so astronomical that we haven’t been able to get some of the upper-end stallions. So we just pick our spots and try to be ready for opportunity when it presents itself and take advantage of it. We’re trying to get stallions that we believe in and can get behind, but it’s tough. We really needed a horse like Not This Time to come on.”

Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway), currently the leading first-crop sire by winners, has been an up-and-comer to watch all year with his offspring showing his precocity on the track while proving to be increasingly popular at the sales.

“They’re early, I think they’re going to go the distance and they’re running on both surfaces,” Ben said. “He reminds me of Unbridled’s Song in that he’s good-looking, his horses are talented and are all a pretty good size. In fact, I think he may be a little better than Unbridled’s Song from a physical standpoint because he gets the perfect-sized horse. He’s flawless and his babies resemble him.”

Not This Time already has the clout of having sired a GISW in ‘TDN Rising Star’ Princess Noor, who romped to victory in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. earlier this month.

“Princess Noor is unbelievable,” Ben said. “They really haven’t asked her to run yet, so they say, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens going forward. She’s an unbelievable talent for sure.”

Her sire had shown the same promise as a juvenile under Dale Romans, breaking his maiden by 10 lengths and then taking the GIII Iroquois S. by just under nine. After a close second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, a soft tissue injury forced the son of Giant’s Causeway to end his racing career.

“We’re very lucky to have Not This Time,” Ben admitted. “If he would have gone on and had the opportunity to compete as a 3-year-old, we probably wouldn’t have him.”

In the same year that Taylor Made welcomed Not This Time to their roster, they also added dual GISW Mshawish (Medaglia d’Oro).

“He’s a little bit under the radar, I think,” Ben said. “But he’s had a few horses run really well in major maiden races with quality fields. They’re horses that want to go longer, so a lot of them haven’t started yet, but they’re showing a lot of talent and I think you’re going to see more of them popping up.”

In the class following Not This Time and Mshawish, GISW Midnight Storm’s (Pioneerof the Nile) first yearlings are now hitting the sales ring.

Two Midnight Storm yearlings brought six figures at the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, and several dozen youngsters are catalogued to go through the ring in the following days at Keeneland. His headliner at Fasig-Tipton, a colt out of Chickasaw Gal (Indian Charlie), brought $200,000 off a $12,500 stud fee.

“The yearlings that have sold so far have sold well,” Ben said. “From day one, we’ve had reports from people who bred to him say, ‘Hey, I got a great one. I want to breed another mare.’ He’s from a sire line that I’m really excited about and I think is going to make a big impact going forward.”

On September 11, Taylor Made announced a new addition to their roster for 2021 in ‘TDN Rising Star’ Instagrand, a son of top sire Into Mischief who will stand for an initial fee of $7,500.

“I’m very excited about Instagrand because he is a powerful, strong, good-looking horse and he’s by Into Mischief, who is just dominating the business right now,” Frank said. “Instagrand’s first two starts were unbelievable. The greatest stallions, I think, have brilliance.”

A $1.2 million joint sale-topping purchase for Larry Best’s OXO Equine at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, the flashy colt broke his maiden in near record-breaking fashion at Los Alamitos and then took the GII Best Pal S. at Del Mar by over 10 lengths. After a layoff, the sophomore placed in two graded stakes including the GI Santa Anita Derby.

Frank said he believes that one of the keys to Instagrand’s early success at stud will be the support he receives from first-time stallion owner Larry Best.

Instagrand named ‘TDN Rising Star’ after ten-length maiden win | Benoit

“Instagrand has OXO Stallions behind him and Larry is very excited,” he said. “He’s going to support him with a lot of mares, and he’s going to buy his weanlings and yearlings at the sales. So he believes in the horse fully and is going to put his power behind him, which is going to be a great thing for breeders. We think he’s got a really big shot.”

Frank reflected on the eventful season it has been for the Taylor Made Stallions program.

“We’ve been doing it for 20-some years and we’ve had great success. We’ve gotten really lucky and blessed now to have Not This Time and to have Midnight Storm and Mshawish coming up. We’re really excited to add Instagrand to the program.”

Ben agreed that in the game of making stallions, luck is always a major player.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have the success we have had with the limited number of stallions. We’ve had Saint Ballado, Unbridled’s Song and Forestry. Something I always ask to myself is ‘How many times are you going to be lucky?’ And it takes luck to have a stallion reach the top, no matter how good a job you do.”

Another Kingman Rising Star As Monsoon Moon Delivers

Saturday’s Close Brothers Motor Finance EBF Stallions Fillies’ Novice S. looked there for the taking for Khalid Abdullah’s Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and the half-sister to last year’s G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was in uncompromising mood as she duly earned TDN Rising Star status over Newmarket’s mile. Always travelling strongly under Ryan Moore tracking the early pace, the 2-5 favourite who was third on debut behind TDN Rising Star Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) at Ascot a fortnight previously was still full of running when sent to the front two out. In total command from there, the grey was chased to the line by the fellow John Gosden-trained debutante Haija (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) but was 3 1/4-lengths too strong there as she in turned pulled seven lengths clear of Naflah (Fr) (Territories {Ire}). The latter had been four lengths adrift of Monsoon Moon at Ascot, putting a clear marker on the race in which Godolphin’s newcomer Sayyida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the half-sister to Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), blew the start and finished last.

Gosden is understandably in no rush with the winner. “Monsoon Moon is a nice filly. She’s a big filly and she still needs to mature physically and mentally,” he said. “I don’t think we want to be launching into anything next and maybe she’ll have one more run this autumn. I don’t think she’ll go for the Fillies’ Mile and Ryan [Moore] didn’t feel it was the right thing to do for her right now.”

Alongside the aforementioned Logician, Hwt. 3yo-Eur at 14f+, Hwt. 3yo-Eng at 14f+, G1SW-Eng, $656,003, the other notable performer out of the listed-placed dam Scuffle (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) is the GIII Glens Falls S., GIII La Prevoyante H. and GIII The Very One S. winner and GI E. P. Taylor S. runner-up Suffused (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), MGSW-US, GISP-Can & SP-Eng, $697,248. She has also thrown the listed-winning Collide (GB) by Logician’s sire Frankel, the listed-placed Battlement (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the triple winner Sleep Walk (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who is responsible for Friday’s Newbury scorer Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}), another Juddmonte juvenile with Classic potential.

The second dam Tantina (Distant View) captured the seven-furlong Listed Sceptre S. giving three pounds and a five-length beating to the high-class Chic (GB) (Machiavellian), so it was no great surprise that she proved a high-class producer for this operation. Her G1 Dubai Duty Free-winning son Cityscape (GB) was followed by the G2 Temple S. winner and G1 July Cup runner-up Bated Breath (GB) who have both enjoyed success as sires. She is also the second dam of the G1 King’s Stand S. runner-up Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), while the third dam Didina (GB) (Nashwan) is the GII Dahlia H. winner. Her descendants include the G2 Gimcrack S. scorer Ajaya (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. and G3 Winter Hill S. winner Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), while the fourth dam Didicoy (Danzig) is a half-sister to Juddmonte’s European champion 2-year-old colt of 1997 Xaar (GB). Scuffle’s yearling colt is by Time Test (GB), while her 2020 colt is a full-brother to Logician.

GSW Sergei Prokofiev to Stand at Whitsbury Manor

Group winner Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy-Orchard Beach, by Tapit) will stand at Whitsbury Manor Stud in 2021 after an agreement was reached with Coolmore Stud, the UK nursery announced on Monday. A fee has not yet been set.

Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms Inc., he caught the eye of MV Magnier at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, who went to $1.1 million to secure the son of Orchard Beach. Named a ‘TDN Rising Star’after graduating by 7 1/2 lengths at Navan at second asking for Aidan O’Brien and a Coolmore partnership in April of 2018, he added a win at listed level at Naas a month later and was a solid third in the G2 Coventry S. behind Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and subsequent three-time Group1 winner Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) that June. In October of 2018, he scored in the G3 Cornwallis S. His record stands at four wins from 13 starts and $181,145 in earnings.

“We are immensely excited to stand Sergei Prokofiev,” said Whitsbury Manor Stud Director Ed Harper. “His turn of foot in the Cornwallis S. at Newmarket really had to be seen to be believed and his performance at Royal Ascot put him firmly alongside the season’s best 2-year-olds. He is an imposing individual typical of his sire Scat Daddy with an exaggerated athletic walk who will offer our clients an extremely commercial option for next season.”

Sergei Prokofiev’s dam is a half-sister to GIII Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. victress Necessary Evil (Harlan’s Holiday), while this is the extended family of GI Spinaway S. heroine Over All (Mr. Prospector). His half-sister by Medaglia d’Oro (hip 319) sold for $1.6 million to Shadwell during the second day of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale on Monday.

Galileo’s Mogul On Top in Paris

Third in York’s G2 Great Voltigeur S. last month, Coolmore’s G2 Golden Fleece S. and G3 Gordon S. winner Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) claimed the full set of pattern-race levels with a stunning victory at odds of 17-2 in Sunday’s G1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp. His two prior starts at the highest level yielded a fourth in last term’s G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster and a sixth in this year’s G1 Epsom Derby. He was hidden away in rear for most of the 12-furlong trip and inched closer along the false straight as his pacemaking stablemate Nobel Prize (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) signalled signs of distress. Making rapid headway along the fence in the straight proper, the eventual winner was not for catching once quickening for control when angled out with 300 metres remaining and stayed on strongly under a late drive to easily hold the running-on G1 Deutsches Derby hero In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and G2 Prix Greffulhe victor Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) by 2 1/2 lengths and a short head.

“Aidan [O’Brien] seemed quite confident before the race and told me that he was a horse that needed to be held up a bit, but had a huge turn of foot and that the longer I could wait the better as he doesn’t do too much in front,” explained winning rider Pierre Charles-Boudot after securing a third straight, and fifth overall, win in the event for O’Brien. “The pace was nice and constant and, turning in, I had a feeling that I was going to get a run down the rail. The horse just picked them off one by one and gave me his all to the line. Coolmore is one of the biggest breeding operations in the world and it is always a pleasure and honour to ride and to win for them. We will see if I get the ride on him in the Arc, it will be interesting.”

Europe’s Autumn showpiece could also be on the agenda for runner-up In Swoop, who delighted trainer Francis-Henri Graffard with a late rattle to finish second, but it’s by no means certain. “That was a great run and, before the race, I would have been happy with second place,” Graffard admitted. “We were worried that he might have been found out for a bit of speed, but he just keeps grafting away. Ronan [Thomas] knows him, he knows to keep after him and, just as I was hoping, he has finished off really strongly. Two weeks ago I would have never thought that he would have come here in such good condition. He takes his work well, I kept him going in strong work throughout the summer and he is very straightforward and willing. I think softer ground would play to his strengths. He holds an entry in the [G1] Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the [G2] Prix Chaudenay and [G1] Grosser Preis von Bayern. I will have a discussion with the owners and we will come to a decision.”

Mogul is one of four pattern-race winners, all by Galileo (Ire), produced by Listed Pontefract Castle S. runner-up Shastye (Ire) (Danehill). He is a full-brother to Japan (GB), who won this event and York’s G1 International S. last year, MG1SP G2 Middleton S. victress Secret Gesture (GB) and G3 International S. winner Sir Isaac Newton (GB). His granddam is G2 Prix de Royallieu winner and G1 Gran Premio di Milano runner-up Saganeca (Sagace {Fr}),  who produced G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning sire Sagamix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) and G2 Prix de Malleret victress Sage Et Jolie (GB) (Highest Honor {Fr}), herself the dam of the G1 Prix d’Ispahan-winning sire Sageburg (Ire) (Johannesburg). Shastye has a yearling filly by Galileo (Ire) to come.
