Global Campaign Retired

‘TDN Rising Star‘ Global Campaign (Curlin–Globe Trot, by A.P. Indy), an excellent third when last seen in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, will not resume training and has been retired from racing. He will enter stud for the 2021 breeding season at WinStar Farm.

“We considered bringing him back for a final start in the [GI] Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. because he ran so well in the Breeders’ Cup,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar’s president, CEO, and racing manager. “He shed his frog in that race and the timing of getting him back into training is not going to work, unfortunately. He has been very popular when people see him, and we are excited about standing him next year.”

Bred by WinStar, Global Campaign was a $250,000 Keeneland September graduate and was raced in partnership with Sagamore Farm and was trained by Stan Hough. Having earned ‘Rising Star’ status at second asking, Global Campaign validated the decision with a 1 1/4-length defeat of next-out GI Belmont S. hero Sir Winston (Awesome Again) in the GIII Peter Pan S. He closed the season with a solid third in the GII Jim Dandy S. off a freshening.

Global Campaign returned running from a nine-month absence to land a Gulfstream optional claimer Apr. 25 and proved an ultra-game winner of the GIII Monmouth Cup S. July 18. Front-running winner of the GI Woodward S. at Saratoga Sept. 5 (109 Beyer Speed Figure), he was bothered early in the Classic, but fought on gamely to be third, beaten just over three lengths by Horse of the Year favorite Authentic (Into Mischief).

A half-brother to dual Grade I winner and popular young sire Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) and to SW & MGSP Sonic Mule (Distorted Humor), Global Campaign is out of a winning daughter of MGSW Trip (Lord At War {Arg}), who also produced the dam of Sagamore’s GSW ‘TDN Rising Star’ Recruiting Ready (Algorithms). The female family also includes the fleet Zensational (Unbridled’s Song) and MGSW/GISP Departing (War Front).

The cross of Curlin over A.P. Indy-line mares has been responsible for the likes of Grade I winners Stellar Wind, Off the Tracks and Paris Lights and other graded winners Tenfold and Point of Honor. WinStar’s Exaggerator is out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s son Vindication.

Honest Mischief Retired to Sequel Stallions

Blue-blooded black-type winner and graded stakes-placed Honest Mischief (Into Mischief–Honest Lady, by Seattle Slew), who hails from one of the top families in the stud book, has been retired to Sequel Stallions New York. He will stand for $6,500 LFSN.

The Juddmonte homebred broke his maiden at second asking at Keeneland at three by eight lengths and was tabbed a ‘TDN Rising Star‘ by virtue of that win, then went on to be third behind Shancelot (Shanghai Bobby) in the GII Amsterdam S. at Saratoga in just his fourth career start. An allowance win at Keeneland and a win in the Force the Pass City of Laurel S. at Laurel closed out his sophomore campaign. He began this year with a runner-up finish to Volatile (Violence) in Churchill’s Aristides S. and closed with it with a win via disqualification at the same track in September. The Chad Brown trainee retires with a record of 9-4-3-1 and earnings of $287,464.

“Honest Mischief was pegged as a real talent by our exercise riders from the very beginning,” said Juddmonte’s Garrett O’Rourke. “He had raw speed, he was sound, and he had desire. He placed behind stars like Shancelot and Volatile at the top of their games and when he won, he won like a Grade I horse. Honest Mischief has such a genetic concentration of classic talent, on top and bottom of his pedigree, that expectation of his success at stud is just a given.”

By record-setting leading sire Into Mischief, Honest Mischief is from the signature Juddmonte family of Toussud (El Gran Senor). The remarkable Grade I-winning mare became a blue hen, producing Classic winner and sire Empire Maker (Unbridled), as well as GISW and sire Chester House (Mr. Prospector), GISW Chiselling (Woodman), MGSW, GISP, and sire Decarchy (Distant View), and GISW Honest Lady (Seattle Slew), who is Honest Mischief’s dam. Honest Mischief is one of four black-type winners out of Honest Lady, including GISW and sire First Defence (Unbridled’s Song).

“To stand at stud the son of such an incredible sire, as well as the magnificent female family Honest Mischief exhibits, is beyond exciting,” said Sequel’s Becky Thomas. “I am a super fan of Into Mischief and am honored to bring Honest Mischief to New York with the support and participation of Juddmonte Farm.”

Baffert Unveils Another Into Mischief Monster

With likely Horse of the Year Authentic (Into Mischief) recently retired to stud, the Bob Baffert barn wasted no time unveiling its next speedy superstar by the nation’s leading sire as CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm LLC’s Life is Good (Into Mischief) demolished his competition to become a no-brainer ‘TDN Rising Star’. The bay prepped for this with a head-turning 1:00 flat (1-of-51) gate breeze last Saturday (XBTV Video), and drifted up to 1-5 at the off after spending much of the betting cycle at 1-9. Zipping off to lead them by open lengths through speedy splits of :21.80 and :44.84, he was always in complete control and streaked home 9 1/2 lengths clear in 1:15.50 while flashing similar brilliance to the same ownership group’s undefeated monster Nashville (Speightstown). Fellow firster Wipe the Slate (Nyquist) was second best.

The winner, who was a $525,000 KEESEP yearling, is bred on the same cross as MGISW and promising young sire Practical Joke (Into Mischief). His dam, herself a $435,000 September buy, never won in five tries but hit the board in maiden special weights in both Kentucky and Arkansas. She has a yearling filly by Blame and was bred back to Candy Ride (Arg).

Life Is Good’s second dam is SW and MGISP Bonnie Blue Flag (Mineshaft), who sold for $1.5 million in 2011 but just $15,000 last November in foal to California Chrome at the age of 12 after having little success with her produce on the track. Bonnie Blue Flag is a half to MGISW and group producer Diamondrella (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}).
