Second TDN Rising Star For Caravaggio

Another Caravaggio, another TDN Rising Star as the highly impressive Contarelli Chapel (Ire) made her mark in a smart-looking field gathered for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden over near six furlongs at Naas on Monday. A half-sister to last year's G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. heroine Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the January-foaled grey who races for Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor and Smith was marginally in front from the break and completely comfortable setting the pace under a motionless Ryan Moore. It was passing the two-furlong pole that Ballydoyle's 6-4 favourite really began to show her class and despite running green in the clear she was able to put 5 1/2 lengths between her and Juddmonte's Juncture (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the well-regarded Ger Lyons-trained homebred. There was a neck between that relative of Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) and Visit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the experienced Bolger homebred Freedom of Speech (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in what should prove a maiden worth following.

Aidan O'Brien already has the TDN Rising Star Tenebrism by Coolmore's first-season sire and it may be that he has to keep her and Contarelli Chapel apart. “She was never let off the bridle at home and we knew that she would be very green when he did drop her, but she was very impressive,” he said. “I would imagine she is an [June 18 G3] Albany-type filly. She might come back here [for the May 16] before that.”

From a pedigree point of view, Contarelli Chapel ticks all the boxes, as they say. Her dam Chenchikova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who had the speed to be fourth in the G3 Park Express S. over a mile in 2006, is a full-sister to the Ballydoyle luminary High Chaparral (Ire) and less-heralded but nevertheless smart Black Bear Island (Ire). A granddaughter of the French champion Kozana (GB) (Kris {GB}), she has produced a quartet of black-type performers with the aforementioned Fancy Blue clear best, G1SW-Eng, G1SW-Fr, SW & MG1SP-Ire, $741,195. Her others are this stable's G1 Dewhurst S. third Smuggler's Cove (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), SW-Ire, G1SP-Eng, $137,682, and his useful full-brothers Casterton (Ire), MSW & GSP-Fr, $163,024, and Fastnet Cyclone (Ire), SP-Aus, $212,185. Her 2020 filly is by Deep Impact's Saxon Warrior (Jpn). VIDEO.

Galileo’s Daughter Of Midday A New Rising Star

Wetherby is an unlikely place to unearth a TDN Rising Star, but the Yorkshire venue more accustomed to hosting jumps meetings acted as the stage for the re-entry of a potential top-class filly on Sunday as Juddmonte's regally-bred Noon Star (Galileo {Ire}) took the opening 10-furlong Racingtv.com Fillies' Novice S. Last seen winning over an extended mile at Nottingham in October, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained daughter of the celebrated Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and full-sister to the G3 Sandown Classic Trial winner Midterm (GB) was under a seven-pound penalty tracking the early pace. Committed by Richard Kingscote with two furlongs remaining, the 4-5 favourite drew away to win by 2 1/2 lengths from the Gosden trainee Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), with six lengths back to that rival's stablemate Franklet (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in third. “She's a lovely-bred filly who has done everything right so far and learnt each time,” her rider commented of the G1 Epsom Oaks-entered winner, the sixth foal of the multiple group 1 winner who looks certain to throw one of her ilk at some point. “She's a very laid-back filly in all her work and very responsive at the racecourse. She does as she's asked and is a very straightforward, very sweet filly. I'm sure connections will ponder the Oaks and she is bred to go that way.”

Winning this race which also played host to the subsequent G2 Hardwicke S. winner Fanny Logan (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) two years ago, Noon Star who had caught the eye when third on debut over seven furlongs at Salisbury in September has a headstart on her dam in terms of the wins-to-runs ratio. Midday took three starts to break her maiden before slowly entering the stratosphere with a trio of triumphs in the G1 Nassau S. and wins in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks, G1 Prix Vermeille and GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Her first foal, the aforementioned Midterm, flashed talent for this stable and was an ante-post favourite for the Derby but failed to hit those heights. Successful in the G3 N E Manion Cup, GSW-Aus, GSW-Eng, GSP-Fr, $375,077, he was followed the next year by the filly Mori (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who also won a Classic trial in the Listed Height of Fashion S. but did not make the Oaks and was second in the G2 Ribblesdale S., SW & GSP-Eng, $101,596.

Midday is a half-sister to Sun Maiden (GB), another daughter of Frankel who took the G3 Hoppings S. and was third in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S., G2 Ribblesdale S. and G2 Middleton S. for this stable, the G3 Nell Gwyn S. scorer and G1 Nassau S. third Hot Snap (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and to Midsummer Sun (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) who was a listed winner and twice group 3-placed in Australia. Two other members of this esteemed dynasty are the G1 Eclipse S. and G1 Phoenix Champion S.-winning sire Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}) and Reams of Verse (Nureyev), who captured the Epsom Oaks 25 years ago. Midday's 2019 colt High Moor is by War Front, while she also has a 2021 daughter of Shamardal.

Seven-Figure Tapit Colt Soars to Rising Stardom at Santa Anita

Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, Summer Wind Equine, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing's Flightline (Tapit) turned in one of the more impressive debut performances in recent memory Saturday at Santa Anita to stamp himself as a no brainer 'TDN Rising Star'. Pounded down to 4-5 favoritism into the face of two Bob Baffert firsters, a $650,000 Simon Callaghan trainee and a MyRacehorse runner, the John Sadler pupil and $1-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad broke perhaps a half-step slowly but quickly rushed up through horses to set a pressured pace from the rail. He began to widen his advantage after a :21.59 opening quarter, got the half in :44.42 while already some seven or eight lengths clear, and cantered to the wire from there to romp by a geared-down 13 1/4 lengths while stopping the clock in a sharp 1:08.75. Baffert runner Brutto (Nyquist) was best of the rest.

It was a productive day for seven-figure Saratoga graduates co-owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Woodford Racing and Siena Farm. The overlapping connections also celebrated a debut win Saturday at Belmont with $1.5-million FTSAUG co-topper First Captain (Curlin). Flightline was the co-third-priciest purchase at that boutique auction.

Jane Lyon's Summer Wind purchased dam Feathered (Indian Charlie) for $2.35 million in foal to War Front at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. The 2015 GIII Edgewood S. winner, who was also a MGISP juvenile, is a granddaughter of MGISW Finder's Fee (Storm Cat). Her now 2-year-old Pioneerof the Nile colt sold for $100,000 at Fasig-Tipton October and was subsequently sent to Russia. Feathered has a yearling colt by Tapit named Failsafe and a foal colt by Curlin.

‘Ruth’-Like Performance: Ribchester 2yo Filly a Rising Star for Wesley Ward at Keeneland

Ruthin (GB) (f, 2, Ribchester {Ire}–Selinka {GB}, by Selkirk), a 350,000gns TATOCT yearling purchase, kicked off her career with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance sprinting on the Keeneland lawn for Wesley Ward Thursday.

The rail-drawn, 3-5 favorite shot out to the front and sped through an opening quarter in :21.91. She let it out a notch approaching the top of the stretch, and, despite racing greenly on her left lead for most of the stretch, was geared down late en route to a flashy, six-length victory over Artos (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

The final time for 5 1/2 furlongs over the “good” going was 1:04.95.

Freshman sire Ribchester, the European champion miler in 2016 and 2017, stands at Darley's Kildangan Stud. Ruthin is his first winner and was his priciest, first-crop yearling to switch hands in 2020.

Ruthin, a daughter of two-time stakes winner in England Selinka, is a half-sister to Hit The Bid (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), MGSW-Ire, GSP-UAE, GSP-Eng, $410,031. Selinka brought 100,000gns from John and Jake Warren in foal to Showcasing (GB) at the 2015 TATDEC sale. She is also represented by a 2021 Land Force (Ire) colt. This is the extended female family of G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Bold Edge (GB).
