War Front Filly A New Rising Star At Dundalk

Some TDN Rising Stars get the tag for runaway victories and some for winning performances much slimmer but full of promise of what is to come and Ballydoyle's newcomer Yet (War Front) fit into the latter category on Wednesday. On paper, the sizeable first foal out of a strong-staying half-sister to Giant's Causeway had no right to be contesting a five-furlong carve-up on Dundalk's Polytrack but she was quick out of the gates for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden and up on the lead from the outset to dispute it with the 150-1 outsider Pretty Pioneer (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}). Having seen off that peer at the top of the straight, the bay had the strongly-supported and strong-travelling Orinoco River (War Front) to deal with as they pulled clear of the remainder and despite being headed in the closing stages dug deep to get back in front near the line and prevail by a neck.

“She's a massive two-year-old. She had been working well and she's done it well,” commented Seamie Heffernan after switching from the stable's withdrawn Heart to Heart (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}), the half-sister to the G1 Commonwealth Cup hero Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}). “She has plenty of size to her, but she doesn't feel weak. I think I got headed, but her heart is in the right place.” To underline the strength of the form despite the select number of runners, there were a further 7 1/2 lengths back to Cailin Cliste (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) in third and that filly had finished 8 1/2 lengths behind Rosegreen's second 2-year-old TDN Rising Star of the year in Contarelli Chapel (Ire) (Caravaggio) in a red-hot Naas maiden last month.

The winner's dam Butterflies (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of Coolmore's more exciting broodmare prospects as the 13th progeny of the remarkable Mariah's Storm (Rahy) who was herself successful six times in graded-stakes company. Runner-up in the G3 Munster Oaks and third in the G3 Flame of Tara S., she makes up a list of significant performers headed by the “Iron Horse” and also featuring the G2 Cherry Hinton S. and G3 Swordlestown Stud Sprint S. scorer You'resothrilling (Storm Cat). The latter has entered the operation's own Hall of Fame by producing two Classic winners in Gleneagles (Ire) and Marvellous (Ire) as well as the high-class Happily (Ire) and Sunday's G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial winner Joan of Arc (Ire) all by Galileo.

Another of Mariah's Storm's daughters Pearling is a full-sister to Giant's Causeway who also proved what a potent influence Galileo is in this dynasty by throwing the G1 Irish Champion S. and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup hero Decorated Knight (GB). Butterflies is also a full-sister to the unraced Fabulous (Ire), who has proven an instant success in her second career by producing the 3-year-old filly Thinking of You (American Pharoah) who was third behind Joan of Arc in the G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial. After Yet, there is a yearling colt by Quality Road and a 2021 filly by Justify.

National Defense Filly Blitzes Belmont Maidens for ‘Rising Star’ Badge

Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}), a strong second debuting on the Keeneland main track last month, got to her likely preferred surface of turf Sunday at Belmont and rocketed clear in the lane for 'TDN Rising Star' honors.

Bought for £75,000 by Ben McElroy at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale last October, Twilight Gleaming became the first starter for her freshman sire when backed down to 3-5 Apr. 8 at Keeneland, and ran a game second despite being pinched at the start and going wide on the turn. Recording a pair of sharp half-mile works in Lexington since, the bay was punched down to 65 cents on the dollar here and broke alertly from the rail. Taking charge early while trying to get out just a bit heading into the turn, the bay led narrowly while well in hand through a :22.26 quarter. Shaking clear into the lane on her own power, the favorite burst away impressively once given her cue by Irad Ortiz, Jr. and cruised in under a hold for the final sixteenth, hitting the wire 7 1/2 lengths to the good. Poppy Flower (Lea) completed the exacta.

Twilight Gleaming is the second winner for National Defense, an Irish National Stud resident who was a French highweight colt and Group 1 victor as a 2-year-old in 2016. He picked up his first winner Saturday in Italy. Dam Thames Pageant is an unraced full-sister to Group 1-placed Mainstream (GB) out of MSW/MGSP Golden Stream and third dam Phantom Gold was a three-time Group winner in England. Thames Pageant produced a colt by Sioux Nation last term.

Galileo’s Bolshoi Ballet Devastating In The Derby Trial

What had looked a match-up between Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Coolcullen's returning G1 Futurity Trophy hero Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in Sunday's G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown proved anything but as the former produced a devastating performance which is up with the best of his stable's previous 13 winners. Leading the main group as Ryan Moore kept it simple, the even-money favourite who had taken the G3 Ballysax S. over this 10-furlong trip here Apr. 11 was sent past the Bolger pacemaker Wexford Soil (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) approaching three out and stretched out impressively to record a six-length verdict over stablemate Lough Derg (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), with Fernando Vichi (Ire) (Australia {GB}) half a length back in third and a neck in front of Mac Swiney. The winner was slashed to 2-1 for the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby.

Molto Bene! Brant Filly Races to ‘Rising Star’-dom

A 475,000gns Tattersalls October yearling purchase by Mike Ryan on behalf of owner Peter Brant, In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was bet into 7-5 favoritism for her Mar. 28 bow at Tampa, but found trouble enough at the quarter pole and again 100 yards later to cost her a debut graduation.

Kicked immediately into the lead here by Irad Ortiz, Jr., In Italian enjoyed a fairly soft time of things on the engine, clocking unpressured fractions of :24.03 and :49.39. Challenged briefly approaching the stretch, In Italian rebroke and coasted home a 3 1/2-length winner as the 5-4 chalk.

In Italian, a half-sister to Villa Carlotta (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), GSP-Aus; and Fasano (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), SP-Aus, was bred by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds and her dam Florentina was bred back Southern Hemisphere time to Juddmonte stallion Kingman (GB) in September 2018 before returning to Australia. That produce, a colt foaled Aug. 2, 2019, sold to Tom Magnier for A$1.8m at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale this past January. Florentina returned to Banstead Manor to visit Kingman in the Northern Hemisphere autumn in 2019 and, returned to Australia, she was subsequently sold for A$650,000 at the 2020 Inglis Chairman's Sale last May. The most recent renewal of that auction took place just this past Friday, with Magnier striking the winning blow at A$2.5 million for G1SW Celebrity Queen (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}).

Florentina produced a filly last September and was bred back to 2019 The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes (Aus) (Rubick {Aus}). That foal will be inbred 4×3 to Shantha's Choice (Aus), the dam of In Italian's legendary broodmare sire, who also serves as the second dam of former 'TDN Rising Star' Rubick. Camilleri, a successful Australian businessman, has had much success breeding horses, but none more so than the irrepressible Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}).

In Italian is the 25th 'Rising Star' for her sire, a number that includes Peter Brant's Claiborne Farm-based Demarchelier (GB).
