Aclaim’s First Winner Earns Rising Star Stripes At Newmarket

Progeny of The National Stud's freshman sire Aclaim (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) had yet to post a breakthrough score, but that statistic was cast aside as Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Cachet (Ire) powered to a taking debut success over six furlongs in Saturday's Betway British EBF Fillies' Novice S. at Newmarket. Breaking sharply to occupy a forward slot in second through the initial fractions, the 4-1 chance cruised to the front hard on the steel approaching the final quarter mile and powered ever clear, under minimal urging, up the hill to easily outclass Godolphin's Before Dawn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by an impressive 5 1/2 lengths.

“She is a lovely, big, scopey filly and her work has been good,” said trainer George Boughey. “She has been working away with other winners and older horses that have been running well. This doesn't come as huge surprise as she is a filly that is quite near the top of the pile at the moment. We will speak to Harry [Herbert], but she looks like the type of filly for the [June 18 G3] Albany [at Royal Ascot]. She came from the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up sale and if she wins at Royal Ascot there is a £125,000 bonus. She has got a very good mind and we have done plenty of work with her, but we've only had her a few weeks.”

Cachet, a first winner for Aclaim (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), also becomes the first winner for her dam Poyle Sophie (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dam of GIII San Francisco Mile victor Whisper Not (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}). Her third dam Poyle Fizz (GB) (Damister) is responsible for G2 Lowther S. victrix Jemima (GB) (Owington {GB}), who in turn is the dam of three stakes performers headed by multiple stakes scorer English Colony (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). From a family featuring G2 Haydock Sprint Cup-winning sire Runnett (GB) (Mummy's Pet {GB}), Cachet is half to a yearling filly by Kuroshio (Aus).

‘Rising Star’ Stage Raider Makes It Two Straight at Belmont

8th-Belmont, $89,240, Alw (NW1$X), Opt. Clm ($80,000), 5-14, 3yo, 1m, 1:38.22, ft, 3 lengths.
STAGE RAIDER (c, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Stage Magic {Broodmare of the Year, GSP, $133,981}, by Ghostzapper) would have given those who backed him into 1-20 favoritism a bit of a scare in upper stretch, but he rallied through a tight spot at the fence to clear his first allowance condition Friday at Belmont. The half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy, Horse of the Year, Ch. 3yo Colt, MGISW, $3,798,000); and to The Lieutenant (Street Sense), GSW, $345,882, was popped away from the stalls by Eric Cancel, but then was eased back and rated along from fourth. A joint-last passing halfway, the Gunther homebred was slipped a bit of rein at the three-eighths and was just off the leaders' heels nearing the stretch. Though there appeared to be an option to ease back and around pacesetting Purple Hearted (Normandy Invasion) with a furlong and a half to travel, Cancel gambled up the paint, and though it took a few strides, Stage Raider hit the gap and kicked home to score by three lengths. A $950,000 buyback out of the 2019 Keeneland September sale, Stage Raider was a distant second to 'TDN Rising Star' Prevalence (Medaglia d'Oro) in a seven-furlong Gulfstream maiden Jan. 23 before earning the 'Rising Star' nod for a 10 3/4-length defeat of Harvard (Pioneerof the Nile) in the Keeneland slop Apr. 10. The latter, a full-brother to champion Classic Empire, returned to graduate easily at Indiana Grand May 13. Stage Magic, a Grade III-placed daughter of GI CCA Oaks third-place getter Magical Illusion (Pulpit), is the dam of a yearling filly by Curlin and was most recently bred back to thatstallion. Sales history: $950,000 RNA Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $106,170. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

‘Jaxon’ One to Beat in Chick Lang

West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner's TDN Rising Star Jaxon Traveler (Munnings) holds the hot hand coming into Saturday's GIII Chick Lang S. at Pimlico. A front-running winner in his first two starts at six panels last fall, the dark bay rounded out the season with a narrow score in Laurel's Maryland Juvenile Futurity over seven furlongs Dec. 5. Off thereafter, he found Sir Wellington (Palace) only a head too tough in Oaklawn's Gazebo S. Mar. 20. Favored in his latest, he bounced back at the Hot Springs oval to score at by 2 3/4 lengths in the Bachelor S. Apr. 24.

Riding a winning skein is William and Corinne Heiligbrodt's Mighty Mischief (Into Mischief). A close-up second in the mud at Oaklawn Feb. 7, the Steve Asmussen trainee went wire-to-wire there Mar. 19. Well-supported while stepping up to optional claiming company last time, the bay once again wired his competition, scoring by 4 1/2 lengths. In his latest work, Mighty Mischief fired a bullet four furlongs in :47.80 (1/29) at Churchill Downs May 4.

Hoping the speed falls apart in front of him, Narrow Leaf Farm's Hemp (Super Ninety Nine) won second time out at Laurel in February before finishing third going 5 1/2 panels in the slop against optional claiming company Feb. 28. Stretched to seven furlongs last time, he came from just off the pace in the muddy test to score with ease Apr. 10.

Ribchester Colt Streaks to Rising Stardom at Newbury

Richard Hannon trainee Gisburn (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) was unable to make all when an Apr. 16 debut fourth tackling five furlongs at Newbury in his only prior start, but the flashy chestnut powered up over six furlongs at the Berkshire venue to earn TDN Rising Stardom in hugely impressive fashion. The well-backed 6-4 favourite was sharpest from the gates and seized an immediate lead. Last off the bridle after halfway, he was given a shake of the reins with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and surged clear in the closing stages to leave Kingmax (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) trailing 6 1/2 lengths in his wake, becoming the third winner for his freshman sire (by Iffraaj {GB}).

“Gisburn hasn't done much since his first run, but he's a horse Richard [Hannon] has loved from the day he saw him,” revealed winning rider Pat Dobbs. “His debut here was good, but he ran green. He was professional today, although I'd rather he didn't hang right. He's still a baby though, but very exciting, and he put a lot of daylight between them. I'm sure he'll go to Royal Ascot, maybe for the [June 15 G2] Coventry.”

Gisburn is the seventh of eight foals and third scorer produced by Listed Prix Coronation runner-up Disclose (GB) (Dansili {GB}). He is a half-brother to Listed Golden Rose S. victor Encrypted (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire). Descendants of his second dam Revealing (GB) (Halling), herself a half-sister to G2 Queen's Vase and G3 Park Hill S. placegetter Singleton (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and a granddaughter of GI Oak Leaf S. heroine Arewehavingfunyet (Sham), also include G2 Rockfel S. and G3 Oh So Sharp S. placegetter Gavota (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), G3 Prix Paul de Moussac third Grand Vista (GB) (Danehill) and the dual stakes-placed World Ruler (GB) (Dansili {GB}).
