Observations: Rising Star Natasha on Parade at Sandown

14.00 Sandown, Nov, £10,000, 2yo, f, 8fT
George Strawbridge's homebred 2-year-old filly NATASHA (GB) (Frankel {GB}) stepped up from an Aug. 2 debut second tackling one mile at Kempton to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with a five-length Aug. 20 win back over that course and distance in her only other start. The John and Thady Gosden trainee faces five rivals in this turf introduction, headed by Woodford Thoroughbreds' 400,000gns Tattersalls December foal River of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who is a Ralph Beckett-trained half-sister to stakes-winning G2 Oaks d'Italia fourth Apadanah (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).

Muhaarar’s Israr A TDN Rising Star At Donny

Doncaster's St Leger festival had begun in the wrong way for Shadwell as the 2-year-old Jadhlaan (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) had suffered a fatal injury in the opening race, injuring Jim Crowley in the process, but there was some consolation half an hour later as the homebred Israr (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status on debut. Sent off at 8-1 for the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden S. over a mile, the John and Thady Gosden-trained son of the operation's G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. heroine Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was awkwardly away from the wide stall and lost ground veering right under Rab Havlin. Quickly gaining composure to track the leader of his group towards the stand's rail, the bay was green isolated on the wing in the middle part of the race but came alive instantly when asked to close approaching two out. Swooping on the 66-1 shot Savvy Victory (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) inside the final furlong, he asserted to score a shade cosily by half a length, with 1 1/2 lengths back to the winner's stablemate and 5-4 favourite Frantastic (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the full-brother to the dual G1 Champion S. hero Cracksman (GB) who put up a highly encouraging debut effort in his own right. “It's a very laid-back family and a mile-and-a-half family, I loved the way he finished out passing the line and he took a while to pull up,” Havlin said of the March-foaled half-brother to the useful 102-rated handicapper Almighwar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). “Taghrooda and Almighwar were laid-back, but he's a bit quicker–he's smaller, stockier and stronger than them. They went a bit slow early and he was not really taking the bit and racing a bit babyish, but when I gave him a squeeze he was all there for me and finished out well. He's obviously pretty nice and I love his mindset, so hopefully he has a bright future.” Israr, who becomes Muhaarar's second TDN Rising Star after the recent Newmarket winner Razzle Dazzle (GB), is the third foal out of Taghrooda, who was also runner-up in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and third in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe during her stunning 3-year-old campaign. Her dam was the triple listed scorer Ezima (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who was also second in the G2 Lancashire Oaks and hails from the family of the high-class stayers Enzeli (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) and the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Rising Star Flightline Dazzles at Del Mar

'TDN Rising Star' Flightline (Tapit), away since turning in one of the best debut performances of all time, a 13 1/4-length romp at Santa Anita Apr. 24 that earned him a 105 Beyer Speed Figure, showed that effort was far from a fluke Sunday as he demolished winners at Del Mar to remain unbeaten and completely untested.

Reportedly given ample time so as not to react from his freakish first outing before then coming up with a foot abscess, the $1-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad had generated more buzz with his recent local works, and was off at 1-5 odds that in retrospect were free money. Away without incident from the outside, the bay pressed a :22.01 opening quarter and took over midway around the bend. He posted a :44.17 half with no ask, and soared to the wire with his head cocked slightly towards the stands, officially 12 3/4 lengths in front at the finish. Escape Route (Hard Spun), who earned a 91 Beyer himself last out, was best of the rest. The winner stopped the clock in 1:08.05.

Jane Lyon's Summer Wind purchased dam Feathered (Indian Charlie) for $2.35 million in foal to War Front at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. The 2015 GIII Edgewood S. winner, who was also a MGISP juvenile, is a granddaughter of MGISW Finder's Fee (Storm Cat). Her now 2-year-old Pioneerof the Nile colt sold for $100,000 at Fasig-Tipton October and was subsequently sent to Russia, where he too won on debut. Feathered has a yearling colt named Failsafe (Tapit) and a foal colt named Eagles Flight (Curlin). She visited Into Mischief this past season.

Cairo Prince Filly a ‘Rising Star’ at Del Mar

Ignored at 16-1 debuting around two turns on turf Sunday, Schroeder Farms LLC's Cairo Memories (Cairo Prince) overcame some immaturity to dominate her Del Mar rivals and earn 'TDN Rising Star'-dom.

There wasn't much on the grey's worktab to catch the eye, and she was unveiled here by the typically patient Bob Hess, Jr. outfitted with blinkers and a shadow roll. Walking out of the gate, Cairo Memories tugged her way up between horses past the stands for the first time and was in midpack and off the inside by the time they took the first turn. She continued along under a snug hold behind a :48.67 half, and was up into fourth midway around the home bend. Kent Desormeaux gave the cue to quicken after six panels in 1:13.47, and she gobbled up ground to seize the lead before streaking away under good-looking strides, bumping the margin to 4 1/2 lengths at the line. Second timer Peanut Butter Cup (Candy Ride {Arg}) completed the exacta for the Hess barn.

The 15th juvenile winner this year and third 'Rising Star' in his stallion career for Airdrie Stud's Cairo Prince, Cairo Memories is a full to Cariba, SW, $221,750, a $400,000 KEESEP yearling who won Saratoga's Caress S. last year. A $50,000 September yearling herself, Cairo Memories's Collected half-brother is cataloged as hip 1511 in this year's upcoming auction. Cairo Memories is out of a half-sister to GSW Hello Liberty (Forest Camp) and to the dam of GSW grassers Significant Form (Creative Cause) and Hay Dakota (Haynesfield).

3rd-Del Mar, $72,500, Msw, 9-5, 2yo, f, 1mT, 1:37.64, fm, 4 1/2 lengths.
