Frankel Colt Gets Rising Star Tag In Chantilly Debut

Hot on the heels of Gran Sabana (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) earning a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette in Friday's opening contest at Chantilly, the Fabrice Chappet-trained $535,000 Ocala April breeze-up graduate Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) earned one of his own with a dominant performance in the one-mile Prix de Villebon for unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings. The 15-2 chance was keen under attempted restraint during the opening exchanges and raced in rear for the most part. Making smooth headway once angled to the outside in the straight, he quickened in impressive fashion to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining and kept on powerfully under minimal urging inside the final furlong to easily outpoint Badge (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), himself a half-brother to G1 Coronation S. third Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal), by 2 1/2 lengths.

“The horse came from the [Ocala] breeze-up sales in America and he only came over here in June so has not been with us for that long,” explained Chappet. “At this stage in his behaviour, he still acts more like an American-trained colt than a European-trained colt. He broke slowly, he was keen early on and he was green also, but the way in which he swallowed all the other runners in the straight was really quite impressive. It is not certain he'll run again this season. I don't want to run him on ground that is too soft so the circumstances will decide what we do from here.”

Onesto is the second of four foals and first scorer produced by an unraced sibling of G3 Easter Cup victor Jet Away (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). The February-foaled chestnut is half to a yearling filly by Australia (GB) and a weanling filly by Gleneagles (Ire). His dam Onshore (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who was acquired by Diamond Creek Farm for 320,000gns as Tattersalls' 2016 December Mares sale, was bred to American Pharoah this year. She is a daughter of Kalima (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}), herself an unraced full-sister to Juddmonte's Listed Prix des Sablonnets-winning blue hen Hasili (Ire).

Kingman Filly A New Rising Star At Chantilly

Ecurie des Charmes and Ballylinch Stud's hitherto unraced Gran Sabana (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) went largely unconsidered as a 20-1 chance for Friday's Prix de Toutevoie, a one-mile newcomers' test for juvenile fillies, at Chantilly and made a mockery of her long odds with a devastating burst to attain 'TDN Rising Stardom' on debut. The eventual winner was patiently ridden through halfway and raced off the tempo in rear until turning for home. Rowed along to close approaching the quarter-mile marker, she displayed an impressive turn of foot to move into contention out wide passing the eighth pole and kept on powerfully in the closing stages to deny Andromede (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) by a length in the dying strides. Dark Luck (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the first foal out of a GSW half-sister to Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), was never a factor and finished 10th.

“Everything she was doing at exercise in the morning, she was doing very easily,” revealed trainer Pia Brandt. “We never really ask them to show us the truth at home, but we really hoped she would show us some good things today and she did so very nicely. We'll see how she comes out of the race and hope she takes it well. She's a Kingman so I don't imagine she'll stay much further than a mile. We will take our time with her, but we really hope she will be a nice prospect.”

Gran Sabana is the third of five foals and second scorer out of Listed Chalice S. third Cascading (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), herself half to G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the dual stakes-placed Nordic Defense (Fr) (Makfi {GB}). Cascading was herself purchased by Meridian International's Ghislain Bozo on behalf of Ecurie des Charmes and Ballylinch Stud for 525,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2016. Gran Sabana is kin to a yearling colt by Roaring Lion, who is slated to sell as Lot 396 at next week's Goffs Orby sale, and a weanling colt by Advertise (GB). Her G3 Prix d'Aumale-winning third dam Anna Palariva (Ire) (Caerleon), herself a daughter of G3 Park Hill S. victrix Anna of Saxony (GB) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}), produced three black-type winners of her own headed by G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Anna Salai (Dubawi {Ire}), the dam of this term's G1 Epsom Derby and G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Kodiac’s Straight Answer Dominant In The Blenheim

Ger Lyons and Colin Keane are the men of the moment in Ireland at present and the combination were in clover again on Monday as TDN Rising Star Straight Answer (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) recorded an impressive success in Fairyhouse's Listed Ballyhane Blenheim S. Handling soft ground with aplomb on his debut over this six-furlong trip at The Curragh Aug. 21, Juddmonte's homebred led at every step on this good-to-firm going en route to a 5 1/2-length success from Glengarra (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) as the 2-1 favourite.

“He's a work in progress,” Shane Lyons said. “Ger and Barry [Mahon, Juddmonte's European Racing Manager] will speak to the Abdullah family and see where we go now. He'll probably be finished for this season. He's a horse that we've loved and we have to thank the Abdullah family for bringing horses like this into our yard, because this is what we get up for in the morning. He's very calm and collected and he's what a good horse needs to be. He'll keep us dreaming anyway.”

Straight Answer's dam, who was runner-up in the G3 Prix du Calvados, G3 Prix d'Aumale and G3 Prix de la Grotte, is a half to the G1 Prix Jean Romanet heroine Announce (GB) (Selkirk) and another winner of the Prix de la Grotte in Mexican Gold (Medaglia d'Oro), who was also third in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. His listed-winning third dam Choice Spirit (Danzig) is kin to the outstanding G1 2000 Guineas hero and notable sire Zafonic and his full-brother Zamindar who also made his mark at stud.
