Into Mischief Colt Sails to ‘Rising Star’-dom at Belmont

Sent off at odds of 3-4 to open his account at first asking, Overstep (Into Mischief) turned on the afterburners through the Belmont stretch to become yet another 'TDN Rising Star' for his all-conquering stallion.

Drawn one from the outside in stall eight, the $360,000 Keeneland September yearling pressed the pace outside of 7-1 chance Silver Samurai (First Samurai), appearing to have that one whenever Irad Ortiz, Jr. elected to pull the trigger. On even terms with 2 1/2 furlongs left to run, Overstep was shaken up once heads were turned for home, immediately opened daylight on his rivals and went on to score by 6 3/4 lengths while being eased up for the final 70 yards. The outposted Asymmetric (Upstart) looked to brush the gate at the start and trailed for the opening half-mile, then finished willingly down the center of the track to secure place honors.

The 27th Rising Star for Into Mischief, Overstep is out of an unraced dam who topped the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale on a bid of an even $1 million from owner Chester Broman. He and his wife Mary were represented Friday as breeders by 'Rising Star' Classy Edition (Classic Empire) in the Joseph A. Gimma S., while their operation has also been responsible for GIII With Anticipation S. winner Coinage (Tapit x Bar of Gold) as well as the maiden winner Adversity (Arrogate x Artemis Agrotera) over the past several weeks.

Modest Maven is a half-sister to GSP Lassofthemohicans (Indian Charlie), while third dam Big Dreams (Great Above) produced multiple champion sprinter Housebuster (Mt. Livermore) and GSW/GISP Quero Quero (Royal Academy). The latter is the dam of Glen Hill Farm's 2-year-old filly Muted (Into Mischief), who aired by 7 1/4 lengths on Gulfstream debut Sept. 3. The female family was developed by Clarkland Farm, also the breeder of Into Mischief. Modest Maven is the dam of a yearling Frosted colt, a filly of 2021 by that Darley America stallion and was most recently bred to Authentic.

Sept. 25 Belmont Park Breeze Report

A number of runners aiming for prestigious events at Belmont Park and/or the Breeders' Cup breezed Saturday morning at Belmont Park.

Godolphin's Maxfield (Street Sense) covered a half-mile on the main track in :49.55 (35/50) with an eye towards next Saturday's GII Woodward S.

“It was a very good work,” said trainer Brendan Walsh. “We just wanted to give him a feel for the track. He did all of his serious work in Saratoga. It was just a routine half-mile. He galloped out really well. We're all set for the Woodward.”

A winner of his first five starts, including the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity as a juvenile in 2019, Maxfield annexed the GII Alysheba S. and GII Stephen Foster S. at Churchill this year before finishing second in the GI Whitney S. at Saratoga Aug. 7.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher sent out a bevy of breezers, including 2-year-old 'TDN Rising Stars' Wit (Practical Joke) and My Prankster (Into Mischief), who will contest next Saturday's GI Champagne S. The pair worked on the training track in 1:01.84 (3/22), breaking off in :25.25 and getting three furlongs in :37.25.

“It was a good solid work for them both,” said Pletcher, who eyes his seventh Champagne conquest. “They're pointing for the same race, so I thought it made sense to work them together. They make good workmates, they were head-and-head throughout.”

Pletcher also sent out top sophomore filly and 'Rising Star' Malathaat (Curlin) to work alongside 4-year-old 'Rising Star' Spice is Nice (Curlin). They were clocked in :49.46 (32/81) over the training track. The former, winner of the GI Ashland S., GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S., will train up to the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Spice is Nice, meanwhile, will contest the Oct. 10 GII Beldame S.

“Everything has gone according to plan with Malathaat,” Pletcher said. “This was her second half-mile breeze since the Alabama and we'll go five eighths next week and start to pick things up a bit. There's quite a bit of time in between races, so hopefully we'll have her ready.”

'Rising Star' Following Sea (Runhappy), most recently third behind Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) and Life Is Good (Into Mischief) in the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S., will take on older rivals in the Oct. 9 GI Vosburgh S. He worked a half on the training track in :49.23 (25/81).

“He went well,” Pletcher said. “He seemed to run really well in his allowance win here at Belmont, so that's part of the reason why we chose the Vosburgh.”

Friday's impressive Joseph A. Gimma S. heroine Classy Edition (Classic Empire) exited that effort in good order. Pletcher said the $550,000 FTMMAY grad and 'Rising Star' would likely stick to New York-bred company for now and contest the Oct. 30 Maid of the Mist S., but he wouldn't rule out a GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies try.

“She's been very impressive in both starts, so I think we have to consider open company,” Pletcher said. “The Maid of the Mist comes [one week] before the Breeders' Cup so we'll target that race. But if she's doing so well that we can't resist, we'll talk about it.”

Caravaggio’s Tenebrism Notches Landmark Score in the G1 Cheveley Park

Westerberg, Coolmore and Merriebelle Stables' 2-year-old filly Tenebrism (Caravaggio) was the first runner for her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy), attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in an instant when posting an impressive 3 3/4-length success in a Mar. 28 five-furlong Naas maiden, and notched another first for the now Ashford Stud incumbent with another taking performance on her comeback in Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket. The March-foaled dark bay was under a patient ride through halfway and raced off the tempo in rear. Nudged along to close passing the quarter-mile marker, she quickened smartly to go third entering the final furlong and went through an array of gears on the rise to the line to inhale 'TDN Rising Star' Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in the dying embers for a one-length success. Kirsten Rausing's G3 Albany S. and G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. victrix Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten), coming back off a second to Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) in last month's G2 Lowther S., ran on well to finish three lengths adrift in third. Zain Claudette never featured at the business end and ran 10th while Juddmonte's hitherto unbeaten G3 Round Tower S. winner Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) tanked into contention at halfway, but was unable to land a telling blow in the closing stages and finished eighth.

“I didn't think it was possible for her to do that, not because of ability but because of the [181-day] lay-off she'd had,” admitted trainer Aidan O'Brien after claiming a fourth renewal. “She had a setback after the last day and was off for a long time. She was just literally ready to come racing and I had a knot in my stomach whether it was fair to be running her or not. But there is only one Cheveley Park and you don't get horses with the speed and the turn of foot she has very often. That's why she's here really. Her dad had a terribly good turn of speed as well and that's what she has. I asked Ryan [Moore] to just get her to relax and find herself and see what's going to happen. She did the very same thing in her maiden and it's a rare thing when you see them able to quicken like that. How far would she stay is the next thing. I had her entered over seven furlongs at the weekend and, usually, if they get seven they might get a mile. Wherever she is, you'll be riding her for speed. You have to train her now as a [G1 1000] Guineas filly and you can come back in trip any time.”

O'Brien, looking to the immediate future, indicated a trip Stateside is an option. “I would say if she's going to go again this year it will be in America,” he said. “The lads will decide if they want to go to the Breeders' Cup and it will depend how she comes out of today. To go travelling would be a great experience for next year and I'd say, if she comes out of it well and the lads want to do it, we'd be delighted to go. It's definitely something we'd have to think about.”

Flotus appeared set fair for victory when bursting clear inside the final quarter mile, but first lady status was denied by the unrelenting surge of Tenebrism in the dying strides. “I thought there was nothing coming out of the pack to catch her, and then you just saw Aidan's filly coming and I thought 'oh, no!',” said trainer Ed Crisford. “She's a proper filly, she ran a huge race and showed what we've been seeing at home. We'll see how she is, there's not that many options left this year. Whether we go to America or not, I'm not sure. She's definitely got the size and scope to make a 3-year-old, which is exciting.”

Tenebrism, half-sister to a yearling filly by Justify, becomes the second pattern-race and first top-level winner for her first-crop sire (by Scat Daddy). She also becomes the first black-type and Group 1 winner for her dam Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), whose career highlights include victories in the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois. Immortal Verse is the leading performer for Listed Prix La Camargo victrix and G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Side of Paradise (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), whose descendants include stakes-winning G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. runner-up Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Dark Angel Filly A New Rising Star At Dundalk

Dundalk's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden had the feel of a must-watch race beforehand and Friday's seven-furlong contest lived up to expectations playing host to a new TDN Rising Star in Newtown Anner Stud Farm's Angels Wrath (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Flaunting her wares in a barrier trial here prior to this debut against some smart yardsticks, the 9-2 shot was restrained in mid-division early showing keenness under Ben Coen. Looming with menace when pulled wide in the straight, the Johnny Murtagh-trained homebred showed sharp acceleration to hit the front with a furlong remaining and despite veering left soon after dominated fellow newcomer Kitty Kitana (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) to win by 3 1/4 lengths. There was 1 1/4 lengths back to Ballydoyle's well-supported 2-1 favourite West Coast (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third, with others such as the proven Livia Celeste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the newcomer Lustre (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-sister to Cliffs of Moher (Ire), well beaten in fifth and 10th respectively.

“She won a barrier trial a way back and was keen then, so I wanted to get her settled and she did things right today,” Coen explained. “She was still plenty green, so there's a lot to work on. We liked her coming here, as she quickened very smart in her barrier trial and that experience was a big help to her. Johnny's improve no end from them and I probably would have been disappointed if I wasn't bang there. She really galloped out strong and took a bit of pulling up too. She has plenty of options and I'm looking forward to her. She has a huge frame, so next year will be her year and anything that comes this year is a bonus.”

Angels Wrath, who becomes the fourth TDN Rising Star for her sire, was offered at the Goffs Sportsman's Yearling Sale 12 months ago, but came back to her breeders after failing to make her reserve. She is the third foal out of the useful Cailini Alainn (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), whose career-best came when winning a 13-furlong handicap at Leopardstown in 2015. She is a half to Dark Crusader (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), winner of York's Melrose H. over the Ebor trip and runner-up in the G3 Give Thanks S. before producing this year's other TDN Rising Star Duke de Sessa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Another of Cailini Alainn's half-siblings is Naughty Or Nice (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who was also a strong stayer who took the 13-furlong Listed Yeats S. and finished third in the 14-furlong G3 Stanerra S. This is also the family of the GI Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup H. and G2 King Edward VII S. hero Subtle Power (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and of Mutahadee (Ire) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) who was runner-up in the G1 Dubai Duty Free.
