‘Rising Star’ Annapolis Wins ‘War’ in Pilgrim

Sunday's GII Pilgrim S. at Belmont featured just four horses, but it was far from boring, as 'TDN Rising Star' Annapolis and GIII With Anticipation S. runner-up Portfolio Company threw it down pretty much from start to finish. Bass homebred Annapolis was pounded down to clear favoritism off a head-turning, fast-finishing 4 1/2-length debut score at Saratoga Sept. 4, and prompted Portfolio Company here through easy splits of :24.34 and :48.96 as Expected pacesetter Doctor Jeff (Street Boss) was ridden with surprising patience after breaking slowly. Annapolis ranged up on even terms with his main rival after a six-furlong split of 1:12.22. Portfolio Company battled back gamely from the fence in the run to the line, but Annapolis always seemed to have a little bit more to give and struck the wire a head in front.

“With only four horses, there wasn't much speed in the race,” noted winning pilot Irad Ortiz, Jr. “The other horse that showed some speed (Doctor Jeff) to the outside of me might be a step below these horses. [Portfolio Company] I've ridden before and he can be tough to handle and likes to get very keen. I knew the pace wasn't going to be very fast, so I just broke well and tried to be close to the pace. I ended up second to the horse I had to try and beat, so I just went from there.

“He fought the whole way to the wire. That was a nice race. The way he did it last time he looked like a nice horse, so we expected him to move forward and he did.”

Added Byron Hughes, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher: “He broke well and Irad had him in a great spot on the outside. It was a good duel down the stretch and he was able to get a head down at the wire… We were hoping he would break well and help Irad put himself in a good position and see what happened today. I thought [Doctor Jeff] was going to show more speed. He didn't break well and left us alone there on the outside in the clear, so it all worked out.”

This was Pletcher's fourth win in the Pilgrim, which has produced the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner in three of the last five years.

Pedigree Notes:
Annapolis becomes the 100th black-type winner and 56th graded/group winner for his superstar sire–he is the fourth graded winner bred on the War Front–Unbridled's Song cross. Unbridled's Song, perennially at or near the top of the broodmare sire list, is responsible for the dams of 104 graded/group winners.

Originally campaigned by Mathis Stable and Pletcher after selling for $260,000 as a KEESEP yearling, My Miss Sophia took the 2014 GII Gazelle S. and was second in the GI Kentucky Oaks before being purchased by Reynolds Bell, Jr. on behalf of Jon Clay's Alpha Delta Stables for $2.15 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale that fall.

My Miss Sophia found a new home on the turf at four, and earned a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure when finishing a close third in the GII Ballston Spa S. behind MGISWs Dacita (Chi) (Scat Daddy) and Tepin (Bernstein). She was subsequently put in foal to War Front after an abbreviated 2016 campaign, and produced the now 3-year-old Nevisian Sunrise, who was third in June's Wild Applause S. here for her breeder and Portfolio Company's conditioner Chad Brown. Agent Steve Young, meanwhile, paid $4 million for My Miss Sophia while she was carrying Annapolis at the 2018 Keeneland November sale–her price was $200,000 short of sale topper Lady Eli.

A half to the Young-purchased 2015 GI Florida Derby winner Materiality (Afleet Alex) from the family of GISWs Afleet Express and Embellish the Lace, My Miss Sophia lost her Medaglia d'Oro foal in 2020, but produced another War Front colt Apr. 23. She was barren to War Front in her most recent visit to him.

Caroline Herschel A New Rising Star At Killarney

Away from the hustle and bustle of Newmarket and ParisLongchamp, Killarney staged a relatively low-key card on Saturday but the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden revealed one to generate excitement in new TDN Rising Star Caroline Herschel (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Homebred by Vimal and Gillian Khosla, the March-foaled chestnut started the mile contest as a 14-1 shot hailing from the in-form Jessica Harrington stable on what looked a demanding debut tackling some well-regarded colts. Worse than mid-division early, she had plenty to do at halfway but came on strong to loom seven-wide on the home turn. Taking control with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, she drew away to score impressively by 3 1/2 lengths from Comfort Zone (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), who had been ninth on debut behind another TDN Rising Star in Eclat de Lumiere (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Ballydoyle's 11-10 favourite Sun King (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was a further 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“It was a very good performance first time, as she's a very big filly,” rider Nathan Crosse said of the imposing winner, who is the third TDN Rising Star for her late sire. “She broke well and I thought we went very hard on that ground and I couldn't really go with them. I let her find her feet and turning in we picked up again and once I gave her a shove, she picked up the bridle and did it nicely going away. In the end, I got there too early. She is a very big filly, so obviously hasn't run until the back end of the year but will be a lovely filly next year.”

The unraced dam Compostela (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who was a 72,000gns purchase at the 2016 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, is off to a flyer as a broodmare with her first foal being the G3 Killavullan S. winner and GII Honeymoon S. runner-up Stela Star (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus}). The second dam is Lael Stable's G3 King George S. and G3 Molecomb S. winner Enticing (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), whose high-class daughter One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) needs no introduction as the triple G1 Prix de la Foret heroine who also captured the G3 Oak Tree S. and G3 Fairy Bridge S. and was placed in two editions of the G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S., as well as the G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Queen Anne S. The third dam is the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Norfolk S.-winning European champion 2-year-old filly Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}). Compostela's 2021 colt is by Too Darn Hot (GB).

Son Of Shamardal Another Rising Star At Newmarket

Newmarket's Sun Chariot card was a breeding ground for emerging talent on Saturday, with the MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed EBF Maiden S. the scene of the arrival of another TDN Rising Star in Earle Mack's newcomer Cash (Ire) (Shamardal). Sent off at 8-1 for his debut in this mile contest, the grey broke slowly before being held up by Jamie Spencer in rear throughout the early stages. Threaded up the rail to enter contention approaching two out, he had three lengths to make up on the 11-8 favourite Al Nafir (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) there but produced a telling surge to cut back the deficit in just over a furlong. Overwhelming that full-brother to Ghaiyyath (Ire) with 150 yards remaining, the David Simcock-trained newcomer finished off strongly to deny the Godolphin blueblood a winning debut by 1 1/2 lengths as the 50-1 shot Laatansa (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) ended up a neck back in third.

“He is a big horse, but he did everything right today and he is a nice prospect for next year,” Simcock said. “The mare stayed a mile six and he's drifted through his work at home and has never got tired, which is a good sign for me. He is a big, strapping horse and he has sustained his run today. We don't get that many of that make of car, so it is nice to find one! If he got there today great, but if he didn't there then there was always going to be another day. It can make life harder when they win first time out and I don't think he will be doing anything else this season. He's a horse we like and is talented–we've found some nice 2-year-olds this year and ten furlongs will be the starting point for him next year.”

Spencer was impressed and said, “It's difficult to do what he did on this racecourse first time out–I wanted to get him in and to relax and heading to the two I thought he'd be fourth, but he took off and got to the front and idled. I'd ridden him in March before David bought him and loved him the first day I sat on him. I've ridden him a good bit at home and he's an exciting horse. David doesn't train them to peak first time out and he's a beautiful horse and very comfortable to ride–he skips over the ground. Sometimes the dip here can feel like a roller-coaster, but on him it felt comfortable and generally a good horse gets in and out of the dip easily here. He should stay at least 10 furlongs next year and if he stays a mile and a half it puts him in another stratosphere. I've been looking forward to him running for a month now and told my agent that wherever Cash runs I'm going there to ride him.”

Cash, who is the 12th Shamardal to attain TDN Rising Star status, is out of Lady Rosamunde (GB) (Maria's Mon) who was a useful handicap winner over 14 furlongs. She is a daughter of the Listed Prix de Thiberville winner and G3 Lancashire Oaks runner-up String Quartet (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and is therefore a half to the G2 Park Hill S. scorer Meeznah (Dynaformer), who was disqualified after finishing a neck second to Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) in the 2010 G1 Epsom Oaks. Also a half to the G2 Princess of Wales's S. runner-up Shahin (Kingmambo), String Quartet is the second dam of this year's G1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Under Your Spell (SAf) (Capetown Noir {SAf}). This is also the family of the GI Canadian International heroine Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Lady Rosamunde has a yearling full-sister to Cash and a colt foal by Exceed and Excel (Aus) to follow.

SIR LONDON (Malibu Moon) was led out unsold on a bid of $135,000 at the 2020 Keeneland January Sale, but improved over the next 17 months and was knocked down to agents Alex Elliott and Ben McElroy for $700,000 after breezing a furlong on his wrong lead in :10 flat (see below) at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale. The priciest of 24 juveniles (32 ring) for his late sire in 2021, Sir London is a half-brother to MSP Castellani (Quality Road) and GSP Seeking Her Glory (Giant's Causeway). His multiple Grade III-winning grand-dam is responsible for GSW Converge (Sidney's Candy) and SP Hot Dad (Sidney's Candy). Winning Map (Liam's Map) cost Pick View just $55,000 as a KEESEP yearling but blossomed into a $525,000 OBS March acquisition by Emmanuel de Seroux's Narvick International after a quarter-mile drill in :20 3/5. Winchell Thoroughbreds' PNEUMATIC (Uncle Mo) earned 'TDN Rising Star' status for a fast-finishing allowance victory going a mile at Oaklawn last April and went on to complete the trifecta behind Maxfield (Street Sense) in the GIII Matt Winn S. the following month. Fourth to Tiz the Law (Constitution) in the GI Belmont S., the homebred made light work of seven rivals in the Pegasus S. at Monmouth Park in August and was last seen finishing well down the field in the GI Preakness S. exactly 52 weeks ago. MILANO (Into Mischief) was purchased by DeMeric Sales for $300,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale and was successfully resold at OBS April the following spring, fetching a sales-topping $1.3 million from Team Casse on behalf of owner John Oxley after the colt breezed two furlongs in :21 flat. The bay colt is out of an unraced half-sister to MSW & GISP By the Light (Malibu Moon), the dam of MGISW By the Moon (Indian Charlie) and GSP Wonderful Light (Tiz Wonderful). TJCIS PPs

Freakish First-Out Winner Takes Next Step…
7th-WO, C$101K, Alw, 3yo/up, 6fT, post time: 4:27 p.m. ET
ARTIE (Artie Schiller) had plenty of admirers as a 7-2 chance making his debut in a 6 1/2-furlong turf maiden Sept. 4 and was a clear last early after being steadied right out of the machine. But he traveled sweetly thereafter, pinched ground on the turn and exploded through the lane while switching his leads back and forth to graduate by 9 1/2 lengths in fast time (video), good for an 89 Beyer Speed Figure. The 8-5 morning-line favorite has gate six with Kazushi Kimura back in the irons. TJCIS PPs
