Runhappy Gets First Graded Win from ‘Rising Star’ Following Sea

'TDN Rising Star' Following Sea (Runhappy) made the grade with a dominating win in Saturday's GII Vosburgh S., a 'Win and You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar.

Following Sea cleared the field of four from his outside draw and it was smooth sailing from there. The Spendthrift Farm homebred, off at odds of 5-2, cut out fractions of :22.59 and :45.24, and, after leaving the rail open as he cornered for home, hit the gas in the stretch to win for fun by 4 3/4 lengths.

Vosburgh defending champion and fan favorite Firenze Fire (Poseidon's Warrior) was second after breaking through the gate prior to the start as the favorite. Big figure earner Baby Yoda (Prospective) was a disappointing third in his stakes debut.

Following Sea, a blowout maiden winner and 'Rising Star' for Bob Baffert on the GI Arkansas Derby undercard, made three prior starts for Todd Pletcher. An eye-catching allowance winner at Belmont June 3, he stretched to two turns for the first time with a well-beaten third–elevated to second via disqualification–in the GI TVG.com Haskell S. July 17. Following Sea was a well-beaten third behind heavyweights Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) and Life Is Good (Into Mischief) in a very live renewal of the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. last time Aug. 28, which has produced five next-out winners.

“I thought he ran great,” Pletcher said. “We just wanted to take advantage of the outside post and see how everything unfolded. He really took all the strategy out of play in the first 50 yards. He broke great, put himself right on the front and it seemed like he was in hand throughout.

Pletcher continued, “We left the paddock with the idea that we won't take anything away that comes easily. If he breaks well, that's great. If he gets in a speed duel, that's okay, too. So, I said to use judgement and it looked like he made a decision pretty easily. When he made the lead that easily I was pretty confident. He looked like he kicked on pretty well and Joel [Rosario] wrapped up on him pretty late.”

As far as the Breeders' Cup Sprint goes, Pletcher said, “We'll play it by ear and see. I'll talk to the guys at Spendthrift and we'll come up with a plan. It's got to be in play.”

Following Sea is the fifth stakes winner and first graded winner for young sire Runhappy. This is the 35th stakes/13th graded winner for broodmare sire Speightstown.

Quick Flip–a winner of her first three starts at two, including Tampa's Sandpiper S.–was purchased by Spendthrift Farm carrying Following Sea in utero for $230,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. She is a half-sister to SW & MGSP Qahira (Cairo Prince) and SW Stormin' Lyon (Storm Boot), and hails from the family of GISW Mitterand (Hold Your Peace).

In addition to the stakes-placed Inspeightof (Orb), Quick Flip's most recent produce includes the 2-year-old, stakes-placed Into Mischief filly Gimmick, purchased by bloodstock agent Mike Ryan for $450,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, and a 2021 Hard Spun colt. Quick Flip was bred to Authentic for 2022.

Dubawi’s Goldspur Wins The Zetland

Labelled a TDN Rising Star on his winning debut at Sandown Sept. 15, Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) got Godolphin and Charlie Appleby's Future Champions Day at Newmarket off to a flyer on Saturday as he mastered Unconquerable (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) and stablemate Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in a thrilling finale to the 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. Unable to gain extra experience following his debut 6 1/2-length romp when withdrawn from Epsom's Cazoo Derby “Wild Card” EBF Conditions S. after becoming upset in the stalls, Goldspur put that behind him here to travel sweetly for James Doyle away from the 6-4 favourite Hafit as the pair led the way. With Unconquerable joining in two out, they were in line with the lead swapped between them but near the line it was the 5-2 second favourite who gave extra to beat the Irish challenger by a head, with Hafit only a short head behind. “It felt as if he had improved since Sandown and there was no real second to him that day, but that form had taken a couple of knocks since and he'd had that minor mishap at Epsom in between,” the winning rider said. “Today, he was foot-perfect and travelled really well–those other horses had the advantage of experience over him and probably ran straighter down into the 'dip', so to finish off best is pleasing.”

Doyle revealed that Goldspur had been hard for Charlie Appleby and William Buick to weigh up at home. “He's been difficult to assess and when they galloped together Hafit was far better. Charlie didn't expect what he did at Sandown, as he hadn't shown that at home but that's not a bad way to be. For a big fellow, he's going to be versatile I think regards to the ground. It's still a little bit dead here, but he's a good mover. He actually travelled best of the three, but wobbled under pressure in the dip and then got going again when he met the rising ground. He's a big relentless galloper who clearly sleeps at home.”

Appleby added, “Full credit to Jerry and Tom and the team back at home; they've done a great job with this horse. He's a nice homebred with a nice staying page. He's only come of late and it's all about next year with him. We'll start off with some of the trials in the spring maybe. I think that he could make up into a Derby horse, as he has definitely got the page for it and he has done nothing wrong at the moment apart from one little blip which has been ironed out.”
Donnacha O'Brien said of the runner-up, who was advertising the form of the Sept. 25 G2 Royal Lodge S. in which he was third last time, “He ran a cracker and is still learning. He's a big horse and there is a bit of improvement in him as well. We could look at the 10-furlong race in France [the Oct. 23 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud] next time–it didn't look like he was stopping there and he's a big tough horse who is clear-winded so usually when they have those qualities they go on any ground.”

Goldspur is the fourth foal out of the talented G2 Lanchashire Oaks and G3 Prix Minerve winner Pomology (Arch), who was also runner-up in the G1 Prix Vermeille. She is kin to the Listed Garrowby S. winner Tommy Taylor (Mizzen Mast) and the GI Just a Game S. and GI American Oaks runner-up Sassy Little Lila (Artie Schiller). This is also the family of the GI Turf Classic Invitational-winning sire Apple Tree (Fr) and the G3 Prix de Royaumont runner-up American Apples (Fr) (American Post {GB}). Pomology's filly foal is by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Sea the Stars Filly A Second Rising Star At Saint-Cloud

Following on where the colt Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) had left off at Saint-Cloud on Thursday, Godolphin's filly Life in Motion (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) earned TDN Rising Star status in the Prix Tenebreuse also for newcomers over seven furlongs. Settled in fourth early on the testing ground by Mickael Barzalona, the daughter of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}) arrived on the front end full of running with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Pushed out from there, the Andre Fabre-trained 7-10 favourite was able to secure a facile five-length success from Indian Wish (Fr) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}), with Roselyne (Fr) (Dariyan {Fr}) a further three lengths away in third as they finished strung out.

“She is still very immature, but goes to great lengths to do things right and I really liked her way of doing things,” said winning rider Mickael Barzalona. “We could have won more easily, but she was on and off the bit in behind the leading horses. I allowed her to relax and let her come back to me in her own time. Once we quickened to the front, I didn't look back to see how far she won by and she still had plenty in reserve at the line.”

The dam has also produced the G3 Prix de Flore runner-up Switching (Street Cry {Ire}) and her G3 Prix Chloe-placed full-sister Flowrider, who was fourth in the Saint-Alary. The second dam Summertime Legacy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and was third in the Saint-Alary herself before also producing the former TDN Rising Star and G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}). Her daughter Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) was third in the G1 Fillies Mile before providing these connections with the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal), while another of Wavering's half-sisters Lavender and Lace (GB) (Barathea {Ire} is responsible for the G2 Superlative S. third Maxi Boy (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Life In Motion, who becomes the 12th TDN Rising Star for his sire, is followed by a yearling son of Shamardal.

Kingman’s Tumbler A New Rising Star in France

Carlos Laffon-Parias trainee Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), a hitherto untested homebred sporting the colours of Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, was eclipsed for favouritism in the betting, but opened up with an impressive daylight rout of five rivals in Thursday's Prix As d'Atout, a seven-furlong heat for unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings, at Saint-Cloud. The 17-5 chance was swiftly into stride and settled into a smooth rhythm racing third, four lengths off the pace, through halfway. Sent wide with the field into the straight, he quickened in taking fashion to sweep by Heatherwood (Fr) (Birchwood {Ire}) passing the two pole and powered clear in style once easing underneath the stands' side rail with 300 metres remaining. Tumbler stretched out to a 10-length advantage from Heatherwood at the line, earning a 'TDN Rising Star' on debut.

Tumbler is the fifth of seven foals and fourth scorer produced by a winning half-sister to three stakes winners headed by G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-winning sire Falco (Pivotal {GB}) and G3 Prix Eclipse victrix Iron Lips (GB) (Iron Mask). Descendants of Iron Lips include stakes-winning multiple Spanish champion Oriental (Jpn) (Smart Strike), Listed Prix Millkom runner-up Argentic (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Listed Prix Francois Boutin third Unveil (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}).
