Uncle Mo Filly Has Her ‘Rising Star’ Moment

Cocktail Moments (f, 2, Uncle Mo–River Maid, by Where's the Ring) turned in a powerful, come-from-behind victory for 'TDN Rising Star' honors on debut at Churchill Downs Saturday afternoon. The dark bay didn't offer many clues on her worktab and completed preparations for Kenny McPeek with a three-furlong spin in :37 1/5 (5/14) beneath the Twin Spires Nov. 24. Overlooked at odds of 26-1, the Dixiana Farms colorbearer, drawn wide in post 11, was outsprinted in 10th through an opening quarter in :22.37. She began to roll as they rounded the far turn, tipped out widest of all in about the six path leaving the quarter pole and rocketed home down the center to graduate by an eye-catching 9 1/4 lengths. Delightof the Nile (Pioneerof the Nile) was second. Cocktail Moments is the ninth 'TDN Rising Star' for leading sire Uncle Mo. Cocktail Moments is the first foal out of Canadian champion female sprinter River Maid. She had a colt by Medaglia d'Oro this year and was bred back to leading sire Tapit. River Maid brought $450,000 from Mark Stansell at the 2017 KEENOV sale.

Another Rising Star for Into Mischief at Aqueduct

Augustin Stable's Send for Me (Into Mischief) led home a $1.5-million-plus exacta for her sire as she became the Spendthrift super stallion's 28th 'TDN Rising Star' when drubbing a fancy group of fillies at Aqueduct Saturday. Acquired for $500,000 at OBS April off a :10 flat breeze, the Jonathan Thomas pupil was let go at 6-1 and made that price look like a bargain.

Emerging with the early advantage, the bay doled out splits of :22.99 and :47.42, quickly shut the door on her competition at the head of the lane and poured it on from there to score by a wrapped-up seven lengths, stopping the clock in 1:19.29. Adam's Angel (Into Mischief), a $1,025,000 KEESEP yearling also making her first start, was second. The winner had originally sold for $250,000 at the September sale. Favor (Pioneerof the Nile), a $500,000 FTKSEL buy herself, checked in fourth as the 3-2 favorite for Thomas's former boss Todd Pletcher.

Send for Me's dam Versailles Song (Unbridled's Song) was a winner at Mountaineer and Presque Isle. The daughter of MGISW Versailles Treaty (Danzig) is half to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner George Vancouver (Henrythenavigator) and GSW/GISP Saarland (Unbridled). A full-sister to Versailles Song produced GISP 'Rising Star' Luminance (Tale of the Cat).

Versailles Song was a $370,000 KEENOV weanling; $545,000 FTKNOV RNA in 2012; sold for $700,000 to Send for Me's breeder Don Albert Corp. while in foal to Distorted Humor at the 2014 Keeneland November sale; and brought $145,000 at last year's Keeneland sale while in foal to Malibu Moon. She produced her fourth gray colt Apr. 21 and was bred back to the in-demand City of Light for 2022.

Empire Maker ‘Rising Star’ Rallies Into Fast Pace to Take Bob Hope

Heavily-favored Messier sat off of a supersonic pace in Sunday's GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar and rallied to score going away in the end, giving Bob Baffert–who had three of the four starters–his 11th victory in the seven-furlong test for 2-year-old males.

Hammered down to 1-2 favoritism on debut June 27 at Los Alamitos, the $470,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling buy cruised to an easy 6 1/2-length graduation off a brief layoff Oct. 22 at Santa Anita to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors. Taking the bulk of the play here while removing blinkers, the bay broke smoothly but was out-footed by his three rivals early and sat at the back of the pack under Flavien Prat as the lone non-Baffert entry, Forbidden Kingdom showed the way through a scorching :21.40 half. Poking his head into third as the half went up in a blistering :43.23, he spun into the clear approaching the lane as the field started to condense. Forbidden Kingdom fought valiantly until around the eighth pole, but the early fractions took their toll and Messier took charge before kicking clear for a comfortable victory in the end.

“We were in a good spot,” said Prat. “There was plenty of pace in the race and that was to our advantage. When I asked, he was there. And I think this horse will be fine with running on.”

“Messier shipped down this morning. He didn't train here during the summer and had never been here,” added Baffert. “First time on a trailer, first time he'd seen Del Mar and he walked into the paddock like he owned it. The track is pretty glib so the fractions were fast. In the summer, 21 and [two] wouldn't hold up, but this time speed carries and they were rolling.”

Pedigree Notes:
With the win, Messier becomes the 67th stakes winner and 37th graded stakes winner for the late Empire Maker. He's the lone foal to race thus far out of his dam, who took back-to-back renewals of Woodbine's Trillium S. in 2014 and 2015. His third dam is Canadian champion Catch the Ring (Seeking the Gold), who in turn produced a Canadian champion in Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy). Sold to Silesia Farm for $290,000 as part of the Sam-Son Farm dispersal at Keeneland January this year, Checkered Past foaled a Candy Ride (Arg) filly Feb. 7 before being bred to Authentic.

Unbeaten Lady Speightspeare Makes All-Weather Debut in Bessarabian

'TDN Rising Star' Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown), three-for-three on turf to start her career, will try all-weather racing for the first time Saturday at Woodbine, going seven furlongs on the Tapeta in the GII Bessarabian S.

A sharp 3 3/4-length frontrunning winner debuting on the local turf last August to earn her 'Rising Star' badge, the Chuck Fipke homebred quickly backed up that distinction with a score in the GI Natalma S. The chestnut was sidelined for nearly a year after that, however, before returning with an optional claiming success in a turf route here Sept. 6. She recently was scratched out of the GIII Rubicon Valley View S. at Keeneland in favor of this spot.

The favorite on the morning line at 2-1 is Gary Barber's Our Secret Agent (Secret Circle), who looks for her second straight graded stakes tally. Breaking her maiden by seven lengths in her local bow last July, she repeated in an allowance a month later, but went winless in her next seven outings while placing in six black-type events. She broke through with the addition of blinkers last out in Woodbine's GIII Hendrie S. Oct. 23, running away to a 3 1/2-length triumph.

Other contenders include Gidgetta (Fast Anna), who moved from Richard Baltas's barn to the Josie Carroll stable following a fast-closing optional claiming win in a Santa Anita turf sprint Oct. 8, and Aug Lutes (Midnight Lute), who's notched four wins and a second in five starts to open her career and upset the Glen Cove S. at 19-1 on the Belmont lawn Oct. 15.
