Upstart Filly Runs To The Money, ‘Rising Star’ Honors

Sent off a mortal lock at odds of 2-5, Team Valor International's Green Up (Upstart) improved off a big-figure debut second for previous connections and galloped her six overmatched rivals into the ground, earning 'TDN Rising Star' honors for a 6 3/4-length tour-de-force.

Having dramatically outrun odds of 25-1 to be runner-up at Churchill Downs last May behind the subsequently stakes-placed Ontheonesandtwos (Jimmy Creed) for owner Leonard Mattingly and trainer Chris Melton, the $10,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling graduate was acquired by these high-profile connections a short time thereafter, according to Team Valor's Barry Irwin.

“She's tall and immature. She had a few issues and we gave her plenty of time,” he explained. “We were actually going to run her next week going a mile, but we started getting worried that the race wouldn't fill, so we sprinted her even though she doesn't want to sprint.”

Green Up's most recent breeze, a five-furlong bullet at Palm Beach Downs in 1:01 Mar. 6, had the Virginia-bred sitting on ready. Irwin said the drill was very much in character.

“Her works are unbelievable,” he said. “She goes out there, she stays with her company and just before the wire, she moves a little bit ahead and then on the gallop out she opens up 12 or 15 lengths every time.”

Off to an uneventful beginning for the in-form Irad Ortiz, Jr., Green Up tracked longshot pacesetter Teasing (Tapit)–a full-sister to GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit–through solid opening splits. Easing alongside that one as the quarter pole loomed, Green Up quickly put daylight on her rivals and stopped the timer in 1:10.04 while never asked through the final eighth of a mile.

“It was as much as I expected and I expected a lot,” Irwin commented. “About three weeks ago, Todd called me and goes, 'this Green Up, she's a graded stakes winner, she's unbelievable.' He says, 'I know trainers never call people up with anything but bad news, so I want to call you with some good news and tell you what a good filly you've got. Pretty exciting to have one like this.”

The winning jockey added: “She did everything right. She did it the right way. She put me in a good position. She did everything so easy. Going to the turn, I just rode her, biding my time. When I asked her she responded really well. She took off.”

A May 9 foal, Green Up is out of an unplaced half-sister to the solid Midlantic handicap horse Just Call Kenny (Jump Start)–also a paternal descendant of A.P. Indy–who counted the GIII Philip H. Iselin S. as his major career victory and who won the 2014 Spectacular Bid S. over this main track. Green Up holds an entry for the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks and is the second Rising Star for Upstart, who is already represented on the Oaks trail by GII Davona Dale S. heroine Kathleen O.

Constitution Colt Stays Perfect, Earns ‘Rising Star’ Tag

We the People (Constitution) proved his good-looking debut was not a flash in the pan with another dominant score in an allowance at Oaklawn Saturday, earning the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction.

The $230,000 FTFMAR purchase donned cap and gown with a powerful 5 3/4-length score in his one-mile career bow at this oval Feb. 12, earning an 83 Beyer Speed Figure. Hammered down to 2-5 favoritism to repeat in this first try against winners, We the People broke well and set his sights on the leader, hustling up to press the pace through a :23.88 opening quarter. Pulling at Florent Geroux, who kept the colt under a snug hold, the bay continued to keep the leader honest through a :48.70 half-mile. Sticking his nose in front on the backstretch, We the People cruised clear in the lane under a hand ride from Geroux to win as he pleased by five lengths. The Skipper Too (Brethren) filled the place spot.

We the People was bred on the same Constitution/Tiznow cross as MGISW Tiz the Law. His dam Letchworth (Tiznow) is out of GISW Harmony Lodge (Hennessy), who also produced SW & MGSP Armistice Day (Declaration of War) and GSW Stratford Hill (A.P. Indy). This is also the family of GISWs Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) and Magnum Moon (Malibu Moon); MGSW & GISP sire Graeme Hall (Dehere); and GSW Win McCool (Giant's Causeway). Picked up by Henley Farms for $40,000 at the 2019 KEEJAN sale with We the People in utero, Letchworth produced an Always Dreaming colt in 2020 and an Audible colt in 2021. Both are May foals. She was bred back to More Than Ready.

Greatest Honour Returns in Challenger

After finishing behind the likes of future graded winners Olympiad (Speightstown), Speaker's Corner (Street Sense) and Known Agenda (Curlin) in his first three starts, the homebred followed up on a Gulfstream maiden win in late 2020 to take the GIII Holy Bull S. and GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. in his next three appearances. He makes his first start since finishing a well-beaten third behind Known Agenda in the GI Curlin Florida Derby last March. (Click for more from trainer Shug McGaughey in Steve Sherack's APB series)

Also on the comeback trail is Dynamic One (Union Rags), who was second to Greatest Honour in that one's maiden-breaking success before going on to just miss behind stablemate Bourbonic (Bernardini) in the GII Wood Memorial S. last spring. After beating home just one rival in the GI Kentucky Derby, the $725,000 Keeneland September grad defeated the Curlin duo of Miles D and 'TDN Rising Star' First Captain in the July 30 Curlin S. at Saratoga and was last seen finishing seventh in the GI Runhappy Travers S. Aug. 28.

'Rising Star' Shirl's Speight (Speightstown) is a somewhat surprising inclusion in the Challenger, given that three of his four wins have come on the grass, including a 1 1/2-length defeat of defending champion Get Smokin (Got Stormy) in the GIII Tampa Bay S. Feb. 5.

Almanzor’s Lassaut A New Rising Star In France

Riviera Equine & Haras d'Etreham's 3-year-old colt Lassaut (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) followed up a Dec. 12 debut third going 7 1/2 furlongs at Deauville with a taking one-length triumph upped to one mile at Chantilly coming back for his sophomore return in Wednesday's Prix de la Broutillerie. The Jean-Claude Rouget trainee, sent postward as the 16-5 second favourite, was the slowest of eight into stride and raced in rear through halfway. Easing to the outside for a clear passage soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, he came under urging approaching the eighth pole and quickened smartly in the closing stages to comfortably outpoint Listed Prix Herod third Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}) nearing the line for a 'TDN Rising Star' tag.

Lassaut is the third of four foals and first scorer produced by an unraced half-sister to MGSW G2 Prix Robert Papin victor and G1 Prix Morny runner-up Family One (Fr) (Dubai Destination) and Listed Premio Eupili second Modern Family (Fr) (Excellent Art {GB}). He is kin to a 2-year-old filly by Wootton Bassett (GB) and hails from the family of MG1SW sire Lethal Force (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's stakes-winning second dam Ascot Family (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}) is a half-sister to MGSP Listed Scarborough S. victrix Flanders (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}), herself the ancestress of G1 Haydock Sprint Cup-winning sire G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast).
