Aclaim’s Cachet On Top In The Nell Gwyn

Benefitting from the absence of Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Tuesday's G3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's TDN Rising Star Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) provided the Gosdens' luminary with a timely boost ahead of the upcoming 1000 Guineas. Keeping it simple on last year's G1 Fillies' Mile third and G2 Rockfel S. runner-up, William Buick who was chasing a treble on the card stayed away from the main pack racing near the pace and when set on her way approaching three out asserted for a comfortable 2 1/2-length defeat of Almohandesah (GB) (Postponed {Ire}), with old rival Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) 1 3/4 lengths away in third. “She was doing it on ability at two and was quite weak,” trainer George Boughey commented, before pointing the way to a Guineas rematch with Inspiral. “She loves the track and that is a huge string to her bow here and she will roll forward and she will be giving us a shout a furlong out. She will see the mile out.”

Cachet had earned TDN Rising Star status with a 5 1/2-length novice win on debut here in May before tackling group and listed company on her next seven starts. While most fillies would have regressed from tough encounters during a busy season, the bay kept fighting and after chasing home Hello You in the Rockfel was 2 3/4 lengths off Inspiral in the Fillies' Mile and on the plane to Del Mar. Ahead of Hello You when fourth behind Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, she became the second filly to re-emerge from winter quarters and uphold that form with the latter successful in last week's G3 Prix Imprudence.

Taking the same racing line as she had in the Fillies' Mile, Cachet was always in her comfort zone here and there are reasons to be positive about her stamina for her biggest test on the first Sunday in May. Her dam Poyle Sophie (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who raced over middle distances at a far lower level, is a half to the dam of the GIII San Francisco Mile scorer and GII Mathis Brothers Mile third Whisper Not (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}). The family includes the G2 Lowther S. winner Jemima (GB) (Owington {GB}), who in turn produced the multiple stakes-winning sire English Colony (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) and the GII Fantasy S. third Jemima's Pearl (Distorted Humor). Poyle Sophie's 2-year-old filly is by Kuroshio (Aus), while she also has a yearling daughter of Cotai Glory (GB).

Best of the West To Be Decided in Santa Anita Derby

Barring something unforeseen, they are both headed to Louisville in a month's time, but Saturday's GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby will make either Messier (Empire Maker) or Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) the left coast's best chance at GI Kentucky Derby glory when they go head-to-head for the second time Saturday afternoon.

Named a 'TDN Rising Star' when graduating by a space at second asking over a six-furlong trip that was always bound to be sharp, Messier easily handled Forbidden Kingdom in Del Mar's GIII Bob Hope S. over seven furlongs in November, but was upset by Slow Down Andy (Nyquist) in the GII Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 11. In his lone start since, the $470,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase purchase romped by 15 in the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. Feb. 6, and with a switch to the barn of Tim Yakteen, would likely secure a Derby berth with a win or runner-up effort.

For his part, Forbidden Kingdom has already earned his way into the race, as he is perfect in two starts at three. The chestnut son of the good sprinter Just Louise (Five Star Day) caused something of an upset when beating subsequent G3 Saudi Derby hero Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) by 2 1/4 lengths in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S. and proved he could stay a distance of ground when thrashing his six opponents by 5 3/4 lengths in the GII San Felipe S. Mar. 5.

If someone is to crash the party, 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) would appear to be the likeliest candidate. A $140,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling turned $1.7-million Fasig-Tipton Florida breezer, the chestnut graduated by 7 1/2 lengths on his Mar. 5 debut for Bob Baffert, earning a 103 Beyer Speed Figure that equals Messier's Lewis victory. Yakteen is also the trainer of record for Taiba and Amr Zedan's Zedan Racing Stables.

American Pharoah Filly Powers To ‘TDN Rising Stardom’ at Leopardstown

Coolmore and Westerberg's sophomore filly Above The Curve (American Pharoah) caught the eye when overcoming a slow getaway to finish strongly for third in a one-mile Leopardstown maiden last October. Back at the Foxrock venue for Wednesday's 10-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden, a contest won in 2019 by MG1SW distaffer Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), she stamped her class on a field stacked with well-bred individuals to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with an eyecatching display. The 6-5 favourite was more in focus at the break this time and settled off the tempo out wide in midfield through halfway. Making smooth headway into contention on the home turn, she quickened in taking fashion to seize control approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under mild coaxing in the latter stages to easily outpoint Thoughts of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by 2 3/4 lengths.

“We think a lot of her,” revealed trainer Joseph O'Brien of the June 3 G1 Epsom Oaks and July 16 G1 Irish Oaks entry. “She had a really good run last year and has an amazing pedigree. We couldn't ask for more and we'll see where we go now, but we think she's an [Irish] Oaks type. She's very big so we'll manage her gently, maybe something like the [G3] Blue Wind [at Naas next month] would suit. We won't throw her in at the deep end and we'll take baby steps with her. She really is huge, in a way she's nearly too big, and we'll have to manage her correctly. She hasn't done anything wrong so far anyway. I don't think she will be an Epsom [Oaks] filly and I think we will look at the Curragh [for the Irish Oaks], but it is early days to be targeting that.”

Above The Curve is the third of five foals and second scorer out of an unraced sibling of eight black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat). Frankel’s Homeless Songs Bursts Into The Guineas Picture

Another Classic trial, another TDN Rising Star in the headlines as Moyglare's Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) surged to an impressive success in Saturday's G3 Ballylinch Stud “Priory Belle” 1,000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown. Things had gone awry since her debut defeat of Agartha (Ire) (Caravaggio) over this seven-furlong trip and course in July, but Dermot Weld had the homebred fine-tuned for this competitive affair and all roads now lead to the May 1 G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Held up worse than mid-division by Chris Hayes after missing the break, the 6-1 shot let it all play out ahead until being unleashed two out. Producing a scintillating effort down the outer to swamp her old rival passing the furlong pole, the homebred had a length in hand at the line over Agartha, who was racing under a three-pound penalty with Villanova Queen (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) denying the 5-4 favourite Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) third place 3/4 of a length further away. “She'd been working extremely well and is a quality filly with a lot of pace,” Weld said. “That was a very good performance from her-things didn't go her way last year, but I was confident she would come back this year and show what she was capable of. We'll see how she comes out of this and I'll speak with Eva Maria [Bucher-Haefner], but I would say Newmarket is a strong possibility. She may well get 10 furlongs in time.”

Homeless Songs, who had slipped from the radar having been only fifth as Agartha filled the runner-up spot in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. at The Curragh in September and sixth in the course-and-distance G3 Killavullan S. the following month, is a half-sister to the ill-fated Listed Orby S. winner Reve de Vol (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) who was also placed in the G2 Champions Juvenile S. and G3 Royal Whip S. Bred on the same cross as Adayar (Ire), she is the second foal out of Joailliere (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who was placed in the G3 Concorde S., G3 Park Express S. and G3 Gladness S. before gaining that vital black-type success in the Listed Frankfurt Sprint Trophy.

Joailliere's unraced dam Majestic Silver (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) is also responsible for the G3 Dance Design S. and G3 Meld S. winner Carla Bianca (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and the G2 Beresford S. runner-up True Solitaire (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). She is out of the listed scorer Diamond Trim (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}), dam of this stable's star stayer Profound Beauty (Ire) (Danehill) whose winning exploits included seven black-type contests and who was also runner-up in the G1 Irish St Leger. Diamond Trim is a daughter of the Stud's famed In Anticipation (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), which connects her to the likes of Irresistible Jewel (Ire) (Danehill), Princess Highway (Street Cry {Ire}), Royal Diamond (Ire) (King's Best) and Mad About You (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).
