Siyouni’s Tahiyra In Scintillating Moyglare Success

It was an emotional afternoon for Dermot Weld on Sunday as the legendary veteran of the Irish training ranks basked in the glory of winning The Curragh's G1 Moyglare Stud S. for the first time since 1987 with the brilliant TDN Rising Star Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). So closely linked with the sponsors for so long, the master of Rosewell House was winning their signature race with an Aga Khan homebred who had looked so special on her winning debut at Galway July 26. Always travelling supremely well behind the leaders under Chris Hayes, the 100-30 second favourite was unleashed to pick up Ballydoyle's G2 Debutante S. and G3 Albany S. scorer Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) inside the final furlong and draw away for an emphatic 2 1/4-length success from that even-money market-leader. There was a yawning 4 1/2-length gap back to the sponsors' Eternal Silence (War Front) in third to underline the sheer quality of the performance.

‘Rising Star’ Above The Curve Game To The Line In Blandford S.

Group 1 winner Above The Curve (American Pharoah–Fabulous {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) made it back-to-back scores with a gritty effort in the G2 Moyglare 'Jewels' Blandford S. at the Curragh on Sunday. The Joseph O'Brien-trained 'TDN Rising Star' had won the G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp on May 29 in her previous start.

Caught out wide without cover in midpack early as 70-1 longshot Emphatic Answer (Ire) (No Nay Never) led the way, Above The Curve improved under her own power to fourth with seven furlongs left to travel. Perched next to favoured La Petite Coco (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) turning back toward the stands, the filly was poised to pounce and Ryan Moore asked her for her best with a quarter-mile remaining. She locked horns with La Petite Coco to her inside at the furlong grounds, before asserting and holding off the rapidly closing Insinuendo (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) to win by a neck. Galleria Borghese (Ire) (Caravaggio) was another 1 1/4 lengths back after rallying past La Petite Coco in the final strides.

Racing for Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, the 3-year-old filly was third at Leopardstown in her only start as a juvenile, and graduated going 10 furlongs there when making her 2022 bow on Apr. 6, good for a 'Rising Star' nod. Second in the Listed Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Cheshire Oaks (Robert Sangster Memorial Cup) on May 4, the bay was a 5-1 chance on Sunday.

O'Brien said, “I thought it was a fantastic ride from Ryan. It was the filly's first run back after a lay-off. I thought she'd come on a bit for the run. She's a classy filly and a Group 1 winner and her attitude showed in the last 100 yards. When the going was getting tough, she put her head out and she fought all the way to the line, beating a very good filly.

“The plan was that this would be a nice stepping stone for the G1 Prix de l'Opera on Arc day. That should set her up lovely for that and she's a course-and-distance winner already. She's a huge, big filly, she's actually 17 hands. For a 3-year-old filly that's an incredible height. She seems to have progressed from the spring and hopefully she can progress in the future.”

Pedigree Notes

One of six Group 1 winner for her American Triple Crown-winning sire, Above The Curve is bred on the same cross as G2 Park Hill S. heroine Pista, who was second in the G1 Prix de Royallieu, and similarly to G1 Criterium International hero and sire Van Gogh, who is out of a Sadler's Wells mare. Her unraced dam, from one of the best families in the stud book as a half-sister to the 'Iron Horse' and champion sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat), and outstanding blue hen You'resothrilling (Storm Cat)–her foals led by dual Classic winner Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})– already produced the dual Group 3-placed Thinking Of You to the cover of American Pharoah. Fabulous has visited the court of fellow Triple Crown victor Justify (Scat Daddy) 2019-2021, and has fillies of 2020 and 2021 and a weanling colt of this year to show for it. She was sent back to that first-crop sire again this season.

Duke De Sessa Snares Important Win For Weld

He may have bagged Classic glory earlier in the season but, by his own high standards, Dermot Weld will admit that 2022 is not a year that he will look back on with great pleasure.

Bar Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) romping to G1 Irish 1000 Guineas glory, it has been a trying year for Weld, who is at least ending the campaign with his usual pomp and vigour, highlighted by the tenacious victory of Duke De Sessa (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in the G3 Paddy Power S.

Homeless Songs would later go on to finish fourth in the G1 Matron S. on her first start since that memorable Curragh romp, but it was stablemate Duke De Sessa who thrust the Weld team back into the spotlight and what style the win was achieved in.

Ridden with supreme confidence by Chris Hayes, who delivered a well-timed run from the rear to snare fellow Newtown Anner Stud Farm-owned Thunder Kiss (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in a pulsating finish, Duke De Sessa plonked his nose in front on the line to win by just a short head.

The Paddy Twomey-trained Beamish (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) played his part in the three-way epic but, after a nervous wait for the Weld team, the 'TDN Rising Star' was judged the narrow winner by a short head.

Weld, who was winning the race for the fifth time this past decade, said, “He's had a break and he loves that ground and this track. He'd been working exceptionally well and the only question I had was whether he would get the mile and a half.

“We contemplated running him in the Irish Champion S. but we said we'd go for the easier option and that, if he stayed the trip, he'd be very hard to beat.”

A step up in class could be on the cards for Saturday's 6-1 shot, with Weld convinced that the best has yet to come from the 3-year-old colt.

He said, “There is a Group 1 in Germany next month and we could have a look at that. He's a progressive colt. Today was the day but I think he's only just beginning. The best could be seen from him as a 4-year-old.”

Pedigree Notes

Duke De Sessa was doubling down on his previous Group 3 victory in the Eyrefield S. on Saturday, and continues to fly the flag for his four-time winning dam, the Cape Cross (Ire) mare Dark Crusader (Ire). Third in the 2014 edition of the G3 Give Thanks S. in her native land, Dark Crusader, from the family of GI Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup H. scorer Subtle Power (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), has a juvenile full-brother to the winner named Walsingham (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), yet another yearling full-brother waiting in the wings, and a filly of 2022 by Camelot (GB), whose Luxembourg (Ire) powered to victory in the G1 Irish Champion S. one race later on the card.

Deep Impact’s Auguste Rodin Takes The Champions Juvenile

The vibes were strong about Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) ahead of Saturday's G2 KPMG Champions Juvenile S. at Leopardstown and they proved correct as the son of Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) got his stable off to a strong start to Irish Champions Weekend. Fine-tuned since breaking his maiden over seven furlongs at Naas July 2, the 11-10 favourite was settled by Ryan Moore behind the leading pair early which included his stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star Tower Of London (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Sent to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs of the mile trip remaining, the bay edged right with the smooth-travelling filly Caroline Street (No Nay Never) in attendance but ultimately had the answers to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

“He's a lovely horse and was a bit idle on ground that is probably a bit slow for him,” the winning rider said of the winner, who had looked unlucky when second on debut at The Curragh June 26. Aidan O'Brien had given the impression beforehand that Auguste Rodin has been sending out the right signals at Rosegreen and said, “He's just back off his break and will come forward plenty from it. He is a horse who probably doesn't want to be in front too long, but his mum was like that, she liked to be getting there late but that's a good thing as those horses tend to last longer. He always showed a lot of pace in his work and he's a good traveller, a lovely mover and will appreciate nice ground when he gets it.”

“He has a beautiful physique and a good nature and always went through his work very impressively,” he added. “To get a horse like him by Deep Impact out of a Galileo champion mare is incredible really. He could be a Futurity Trophy or a Dewhurst horse, he has plenty of class and quality and will probably sharpen up a lot from the race. We thought he could be the type of horse who could do both the Guineas and Derby, he could be a Derby horse that could start in the Guineas. He could get a mile and a half, but he's a mile, mile-and-a-quarter horse we thought.”

Of Tower Of London, who faded in midstraight and finished a disappointing last, O'Brien added, “At home he knew more than the other horse and ideally, we would have preferred to take our time a little bit more with the other horse but there was no pace. Something had to go and it probably didn't really suit him doing that.”

Pedigree Notes

Auguste Rodin, who becomes the 151st group winner for his legendary late sire, is so far the only known foal out of the leading racemare Rhododendron who was able to win a Lockinge at a mile and the Prix de l'Opera over 10 furlongs, as well as finish second to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the Oaks. Her dam is the outstanding producer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who also captured a trio of top-level contests from a mile to a mile and a quarter including the Irish 1000 Guineas. Rhododendron's full-sister Magical (Ire) was a seven-times group 1 winner, with her conquests featuring the feature race on this card and Ascot's Champion S.

Halfway To Heaven is out of the triple group scorer and G1 July Cup runner-up Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who is also responsible for the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S. winner Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Summer S. winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire). The latter went on to produce Galileo's GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo Drive S. heroine Photo Call (Ire) and the G2 Richmond S. winner Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never), while Tickled Pink is now the dam of the stable's upwardly-mobile Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage scorer Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).
