Little Big Bear To Miss The Rest Of The Season After Setback

Group 1 winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) will be sidelined until the new year to give the colt “more time” to recover from a rear foot injury, according to trainer Aidan O'Brien. Just prior to his G1 Phoenix S. victory, the Coolmore partners' runner had kicked a wall, driving the clip of his shoe into his hind foot.

“Everything is fine and we just wanted to leave him for this year,” O'Brien told Racing Post on Tuesday. “He's perfect, there's not a bother on him, we just didn't want to be rushing him back. We had to give him plenty of time to get over it. We felt hurrying him for the [G1] Dewhurst [S. in October] wasn't the right thing to do.

“Everything is perfect with him and we felt giving him more time was the right option.”

Little Big Bear graduated at Naas at second asking in May, and then added the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot. In the July 16 G3 Anglesey S. at the Curragh, he drew off by 4 3/4 lengths, and he won the Phoenix S. by seven lengths on Aug. 6. His setback forced him to miss last Sunday's G1 National S.

Mandaloun Retired to Juddmonte USA

Juddmonte homebred Mandaloun (Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker), the promoted 2021 GI Kentucky Derby winner, has been retired. He will stand for $25,000 (stands and nurses) at Juddmonte USA in Kentucky.

Tabbed as a 'TDN Rising Star' in his Keeneland debut at two, Mandaloun was elevated to first via disqualification in a roughly run renewal of the GI TVG.com Haskell S. the following season at Monmouth Park. His resume also includes wins in the GII Risen Star S., GIII Louisiana S. and TVG.com Pegasus S. The handsome bay posted a career record of 12-6-1-1 and earnings of $2,096,052.

One of 11 winners at the highest level for his all-conquering sire Into Mischief, Mandaloun is out of Empire Maker's two-time Irish group winner Brooch.

Mandaloun's female family also includes G1 Matron S. winner Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the globetrotting German Group 3 winner Alounak (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), runner-up in the GI Canadian International S.

“This horse is the entire package, I don't know that I have seen a better-looking son of Into Mischief,” trainer Brad Cox said. “We knew we had something special right out of the box. He had an exceptional turn of foot yet could carry his speed around two turns.”

“Mandaloun is a true Juddmonte stallion,” said Garrett O'Rourke, General Manager of Juddmonte USA. “He is a gorgeous horse who should offer breeders exceptional value when the time comes to sell their yearlings. We plan to support him in the same manner we did with the likes of Empire Maker and Arrogate.”

Protectionist Colt Powers To Rising Stardom In Germany

Gestut Rottgen's homebred 2-year-old colt Aspirant (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}–Aussicht {Ger}, by Haafhd {GB}), who holds an engagement in Krefeld's Nov. 13 G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen, went postward as the 16-5 second choice for Sunday's one-mile Preis der Holschbach Immobilien Gruppe at Dusseldorf and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' after disposing of his rivals in impressive fashion. Aspirant was professional from the gate and broke well to gain a narrow advantage going into the first turn. Comfortable on the lead throughout this debut, he was nudged along at the top of the straight and powered clear under urging inside the final quarter mile to easily outclass Alpenjager (Ger) (Nutan {Ire}) by an impressive 3 1/2 lengths.

“I'm a little bit surprised that he won so easily,” trainer Markus Klug admitted to GaloppOnline after welcoming back the first of his two winners on the card. “Even though his siblings [Akribie and Ariolo] were good 2-year-olds, he is a late-foaled son of Protectionist and didn't come into training until very late. So, of course, we have to be tentative with him at first.”

Aspirant is the fifth foal and scorer produced by a winning daughter of G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis victrix Anna Thea (Ire) (Turfkonig {Ger}). The April-foaled bay is a half-brother to G2 Diana-Trial winner Akribie (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) and last term's G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen runner-up Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}). Descendants of Anna Thea also include this term's G2 Derby Italiano hero and G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin third Ardakan (GB) (Reliable Man {GB}), G2 Union-Rennen victor Aspectus (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), stakes-winning G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Willie The Whipper (GB) (Whipper) and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) third Andrea (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}).

Kingman’s ‘Rising Star’ Kinross To The Fore On Town Moor

Back in vogue when successful in last month's seven-furlong G2 City of York S. on the Knavesmire, Marc Chan's 'TDN Rising Star' Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Ceilidh House {GB}, by Selkirk) continued his renaissance with a one-length victory in Sunday's G2 Cazoo Park S. at Doncaster.
