Volatile Filly Goes for $1.15 Million to Mike Rutherford

First-crop yearling sire Volatile got his first seven-figure sales yearling early on the second day of the Keeneland September sale with Hip 215, a filly out of MGISW Love and Pride (A.P. Indy), who sold for $1.15 million. Three Chimneys Farm, LLC bred the Apr. 25 filly, whose dam has already produced two stakes winners and is a granddaughter of GISW Cara Rafaela (Quiet American), the dam of late champion and sire Bernardini. Volatile stands at Three Chimneys. Mike Rutherford was the purchaser of the Taylor Made Sales-consigned filly.

Shannon Castagnola Named Airdrie Stud’s New Director Of Sales

Shannon Castagnola has been named as Airdrie Stud's new director of sales, the Midway nursery said in a release Friday afternoon.

Helping to head up both the stallion nominations and public sales divisions, Castagnola managed the yearling and breeding stock consignments for Woodford Thoroughbreds for the past nine years.

“I am thrilled to be working with the incredible Airdrie Stud team,” said Castagnola. “It's energizing to be working with a farm this diversified and with such a tremendous history of success. From the beautifully bred mares whose families have been developed over the past five decades, to the dedication in raising their horses to be tough and sound, I have always been a great admirer of the Airdrie formula. I believe our stallion roster, led by the success stories of Girvin, Upstart, Cairo Prince and Collected is one of the most exciting in the industry and I couldn't be looking more forward to being part of what I believe is a very bright future at Airdrie.”

Airdrie said she would continue to be a major presence on the sales grounds as she leads the various Airdrie Stud consignments throughout the sales season. An industry veteran of the last twenty-three years, Castagnola also worked with West Point Thoroughbreds and Taylor Made Sales.

“I could not be more grateful to Shannon for joining our team,” said Airdrie's Bret Jones. “Smart, kind and honest is an incredible combination and it's those qualities that make Shannon so widely respected within our sport. ‘The Digital Market Is Going To Expand’ – Taylor Embraces Fasig’s Platform

With a nod to 80s video game nostalgia, the chiptune of another bid signifies that the Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale is in full swing.

Active through next Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. (ET), Taylor Made Sales is making its presence felt as an agent for 37 of the 127 offerings available. Mark Taylor, President and CEO of Taylor Made, has clearly embraced the potential of the platform.

“We believe digital sales will become more prevalent in the future, but are already a useful part of the market,” Taylor said. “Timing is important for sellers and the digital option gives them more opportunities to sell at the appropriate time.”

One way to look at the commercial market is to think of the digital opportunities as diversifying the sales business model.

“The traditional sales will always be the backbone of the market. I believe the digital sales are a nice complement. They also are nice for racehorses which can be sold right out of their stalls on the track and therefore are allowed to stay on their training schedule.”

According to Taylor, certain horses suit a digital sale when compared to a traditional live sale.

“We are trying to stick with quality with everything we do,” Taylor said. “Digital sales work for most types of horses, but I would be less likely to put a yearling on the site than any other type at this point. Horses with current updates that really increase value allow the owner to strike while the iron is hot.”

In the current climate, a wide-range of Taylor's clients approach him about utilizing this online model. He said his response depends on the situation.

“It is a combination of both. Sometimes we identify horses which the timing seems perfect and we encourage our clients to participate,” he said. “Other times the customer knows their own program best and wants to generate cash and they will call us.”

The current draft of Taylor Made offerings include a number of opportunities which the CEO thinks will be inviting to a broad cross section of bidders.

DJ Stable has 10 horses out of their listings and Taylor explains that all are ready to run. “They have a great program and have a track record of selling horses that still have run left in them. The timing is excellent for DJ as they prepare for the heart of the yearling market to reload.”

Also up is 4-year-old filly Into Happiness (Into Mischief) (hip 8), who has won three straight including a pair of races at Saratoga. “Mark Hennig loves this filly and thinks she has more improvement left,” Taylor said.

Hip 13 is New York-bred Mischief Joke (Practical Joke), a 2-year-old who just ran second at Saratoga in a $88,000 maiden special weight and MSP Alternate Rock (Alternation) (hip 146) is a 3-year-old filly that Taylor says still has conditions available.

Another option is GSP In Due Time (Not This Time) (hip 71), who is entered as a stallion prospect. “He's very good looking and could fit any regional market,” Taylor said.

When asked if Taylor Made Sales would consider offering more stock the digital way in the future, he said, “I am not convinced our volume will go up dramatically. We want to focus on quality, but the digital market is going to expand over time.”

Not This Time Share Hammers For $2M at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga

Before bidding commenced for the second and final session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, a share in leading Taylor Made stallion Not This Time (Giant's Causeway–Miss Macy Sue, by Trippi) was hammered down for an even $2 million. The share was purchased by D. J. Stable, BlackRidge Stables, Barry Fowler and John Cummins, according to Taylor Made's Mark Taylor. The sale of the share was coordinated by Taylor Made Sales and is subject to a 10-day match from the syndicate. Not This Time stands at Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, KY.

It has been another banner season for Not This Time, the sire of five Grade I winners from his first three crops, including this year's Resorts World Casino Manhattan S. hero Up To the Mark. His Grade I winners on the dirt include sales-topping 'TDN Rising Star' Princess Noor, G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen hero Sibelius and GI Madison S. victress Just One Time. The leading fourth-crop sire of 2023, he is also responsible for Cogburn, who won the GIII Troy S. sprinting over the turf at Saratoga Aug. 5.

The share in Not This Time includes all the projected income from the just-concluded breeding season. Shareholders are entitled to one nomination annually plus the proportionate share of the excess book.

Not This Time is governed by a 50-share syndicate.
