Joy Valley, Dam Of Champion Riboletta, Dies At Age 31

Taylor Made Farm announced Oct. 30 that Joy Valley (BRZ) has died from infirmities of old age. She was 31 years old.

By Ghadeer (FR) out of multiple Brazillian-Grade 1 winner Belle Valley (BRZ), Joy Valley was owned by Aaron and Marie Jones and resided at Taylor Made Farm.

Joy Valley was the dam of four stakes winners, including Riboletta (BRZ). Named 2000 Eclipse champion older mare, Riboletta was a Group 1 winner in her native Brazil before coming to the U.S. Once she was stateside, she captured an additional five Grade 1 victories, including the Beldame, Santa Margarita, Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap, Vanity, Clement L. Hirsch, and Ruffian Handicap She retired with over $1.5 million in earnings.

Joy Valley was also the dam of Super Power (BRZ) a multiple Grade 1 winner, Horse of the Year, and twice named Champion colt at ages two and three in Brazil.

Additionally, she produced stakes winners Forest Attack and Tamara Princess (BRZ).

“She was an incredible mare,” said Frank Taylor. “We were privileged to have her here for so many years at Taylor Made Farm for Aaron and Marie Jones. She produced an Eclipse champion in Riboletta and was just a great mare. Everything you could hope for.”

Joy Valley will be buried at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.

Taylor Made’s Steve Avery Named Finalist for Dedication to Breeding Award

Congratulations to Steve Avery, one of three finalists in the Dedication to Breeding Award category of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), presented by Godolphin. The Wisconsin native has been in the horse industry for over four decades and has been part of Taylor Made for the last 20 years. Among the champions he’s raised or managed are Havre de Grace, Princess Rooney, Songbird, and Speightstown.

“His responsibility, his reliability, his work ethic: it’s just phenomenal,” said Taylor Made’s Logan Payne. “Even on vacation, he walks his dog, Henry, up to the barns to check on things.”

Added Dr. Kevin Hyde of Rood & Riddle: “His impact on the industry can be seen through all those he has helped start their careers.”

Other finalists for the Dedication to Breeding Award are David Kyle of Fasig-Tipton and Helen Otero of Coolmore America, who will be recognized on these pages in the coming days. The Dedication to Breeding Award is presented annually to an individual who has been in the Thoroughbred breeding industry for at least 10 years and is a pivotal part of his or her employer’s success.

A total of seven award categories will be honored by TIEA for 2020. Maria Cristina Silva of New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NYTHA) has already been announced as the winner of the Community Award, while the winners in the other categories will be announced live in a virtual ceremony hosted by Jill Bryne and streamed at the TDN homepage Thursday, Nov. 5, at 12:00 p.m. ET. All finalists will be spotlighted in TDN in the days leading up to the ceremony.

Creative Cause, Not This Time See Most Dramatic Jumps In Average At Keeneland September Sale

The commercial market's respect for the late leading sire Giant's Causeway was apparent at this year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where two of his sons filled out the exacta for the biggest year-to-year jumps in average sale price (10 or more sold each year).

Leading the charge was Airdrie Stud's Creative Cause, whose average jumped 71.94 percent during this year's Keeneland September sale to $20,420 from 35 horses sold. As the broadest yearling auction in North America, both by duration and the scope of offerings, a big swing in performance at the Keeneland September sale can be a strong indicator of public favor toward a particular stallion.

Creative Cause nearly doubled his average sale price with his sixth crop, but he more than doubled the number of horses sold from year to year, with the previous crop featuring 17 yearlings selling at the Keeneland sale for an average of $11,876.

The yearlings of 2020 were conceived in 2018, when Creative Cause's oldest runners were 4-year-olds. At that point, he already had first-crop runner Pavel blazing the trail with a win in the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes and a third against older foes in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes. By the end of the 2018 breeding season, he'd also run fourth in the G1 Dubai World Cup.

Creative Cause's second crop was also doing work to build their sire's fledgling on-track reputation in the eyes of potential breeders, led by My Boy Jack. A stakes winner at two, the colt became a factor on the Kentucky Derby trail after victories in the G3 Sham Stakes and Lexington Stakes. My Boy Jack then became a wiseguy pick for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, where he finished fifth as the betting public's third choice.

Also from her sire's second crop, Significant Form, was a Grade 3 winner as a 2-year-old in 2017, and she ran fourth in that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles turf.

“This year's crop of yearlings came from a strong, deep group of mares,” said Cormac Breathnach of Airdrie Stud. “He got about 145 mares that year on the back of horses like Pavel and Significant Form, all the headline horses he was represented by. He got the biggest, and probably best, book of mares he's bred. Between his yearlings and the foals of this year, he's got some really outstanding physicals.”

The slate of offerings by Creative Cause at this year's Keeneland September sale was led by Hip 1998, a colt out of the winning Tapit mare Tamboz who sold to Kenny McPeek, agent, for $180,000. Consigned by St George Sales, agent, the colt is a half-brother to Grade 2-placed Battalion Runner, Grade 3-placed Oceanwave, and stakes-placed runners Tiznoble and Late Nite Mischief.

Airdrie Stud also got into the high-priced Creative Cause game, consigning Hip 1707, a filly out of the winning Teofilo mare Catsbury who sold to Deuce Greathouse, agent, for $95,000.

“It's nice to see him get respect, because he's doing very well on the track in terms of getting winners every weekend, and getting some stakes horses, and staying high on the lists with his contemporaries,” Breathnach said. “He's got a lot in the pipeline to sort of have a resurgence.”

Creative Cause was joined at the top of the list by fellow Giant's Causeway heir Not This Time, whose stock has been skyrocketing with the success of his first juveniles in 2020.

The 6-year-old resident of Taylor Made Stallions saw his average sale price at the Keeneland September sale jump 46.41 percent this year to $116,500 from 26 yearlings, hailing from his second crop. His debut crop saw 39 members change hands at last year's Keeneland sale for an average of $79,569.

Not This Time's first crop of runners has been led in practically every sense of the word by Princess Noor, who sold for $1.35 million at this year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Co., Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, and has gone undefeated in three high-profile starts. After breaking her maiden by a front-running 2 1/2 lengths, Princess Noor won the G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes by 6 1/2 lengths, and she most recently took the G2 Chandelier Stakes by 8 1/4 lengths, making her status as the favorite for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies all but certain.

Princess Noor's exploits have played a big part in putting Not This Time at the top of the freshman sire list by progeny earnings, but below the surface, the stallion is represented by stakes winner Dirty Dangle and Grade 3-placed Hopeful Princess.

Taylor Made's Duncan Taylor said the early commercial acceptance of Not This Time, paired with the high-level performance of his first runners, has set the stallion up well for long-term success.

“They got such an awesome reception at the 2-year-old sales, even before he started getting winners,” Taylor said. “Then, Princess Noor brought $1.3 million, and I think when a horse shows that people think enough of their offspring that someone would go beyond a million dollars…When you're trying to market a stallion, it's so hard to break through the clutter. You can run ads, but when you say something brings a million, that starts getting people's attention, and then they really start looking at who he is and what he is, and you get people diving in. When you dive in on this horse, you keep finding better stuff.”

The top seller for Not This Time at this year's Keeneland September sale was Hip 66, a colt out of the unraced Ghostzapper mare Belle's Finale who sold to Repole Stables and St. Elias Stable for $450,000. Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the colt, as agent.

The mantle is still wide open for a formal North American successor to the Giant's Causeway sire line, and both Creative Cause and Not This Time will be in the hunt for that title as more of their runners hit the racetrack and mature into breeding careers. The race became more urgent after Giant's Causeway died in 2018, and it's easy to argue that these two sires have gotten hot at the right time.

“I always thought Giant's Causeway was a little different [son of] Storm Cat,” Taylor said. “He's not quite as compact and one-dimensional-looking. The typical Storm Cat, to me, though he did get further distances, looked more like sprinters. Giant's Causeway was a little leaner of a horse, and Not This Time's the same way. Who knows how far they're going to go – Princess Noor just won at 1 1/16 miles, but they look like two-turn horses. They don't look like just sprinters, and I think that's another reason why people are excited about the sire.”

Another stallion with a big first crop who made a commercial leap during this year's sale was WinStar Farm's Constitution, who has seen his flag planted in the winner's circles of the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes thanks to Tiz the Law.

Constitution's Keeneland September average for his third crop rose 44.13 percent to $159,619 from 21 sold this year. His second crop brought an average of $110,743 from 35 sold.

Leading the way for Constitution was Hip 904, a filly out of the unraced Candy Ride mare Candy Fortune who sold to Solis/Litt for $725,000. The filly is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Hog Creek Hustle and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Majestic Dunhill.

The biggest year-to-year jump in average in terms of dollars was Into Mischief, who firmly established himself as a top-tier commercial sire, with 57 yearlings sold for an average of $445,632 – the second-highest average of the sale behind Medaglia d'Oro at $599,722. The resident of Spendthrift Farm achieved a 30.72 percent increase from last year, when he had 70 yearlings average $340,900.

‘It’s A Gift’: The Calming Influence Of Cordell Anderson

Watching Cordell Anderson guide a horse through its paces under the bright lights of the Keeneland sales pavilion, one thing becomes immediately clear to anyone who knows what they're looking at – this man is extremely good at his job.

On its surface, the concept of a person standing at the other end of a shank from a horse does not sound like a complicated interaction, but the steady-handed ease in which Anderson can bring a jittery yearling into line or how he helps a star look like a superstar can come off more like a carefully choreographed dance. If there is space between the dance partners, he fills it seamlessly. When it's time to let the horse have their solo number, he's able to stand at the cusp of the spotlight with just enough control to rein his partner in if it's needed.

Like any good dance routine, part of the trick is making the complicated moves and tiny nonverbal communications with one's partner seem routine, and this is Anderson's gift. The energy he puts out is often reflected in the horse he's handling, so he has developed an otherworldly ability to stay calm under whatever circumstance comes striding into the ring.

“If somebody is really willing to listen and learn, they can learn it, but also, it's a God-given thing,” Anderson said. ”For me, it's a gift. I do a lot with the horses, and they don't seem to mind. I can have the shank and walk underneath their belly with just me and them. They just stand there and take it in, just like I do. It's amazing. I love horses, always loved them.”

The way Anderson approaches horses comes naturally to him, but it's not from a generational history in horsemanship. His family had farm animals growing up in Jamaica – goats, pigs, and chickens – and he was taught from early on to handle them gently, but his introduction to horses came from a nearby farm he passed every day coming and going from home. At 18, he went to work there.

The farm was the stable for Eileen Cliggott, one of Jamaica's cornerstone trainers, and the trailblazer for female conditioners in the country. Her operation was a factory for producing successful participants in the racing industry, both on the island and beyond, including jockey Richard Depass, who became a multiple Grade 3-winning rider in the U.S.

Anderson quickly got a complete equine education working under Cliggott and other local trainers.

“As a groom down in Jamaica, you have to ride your own horses,” he said. “You come in for the morning, groom them, saddle them up, take them to the track, and gallop them. When it comes to breezing, they'll get a jockey to ride them.”

During his time in the stables, Anderson began working with a filly shipped in from New York named Distincly Restless, who quickly became attached to him. The filly was owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Munroe, who noticed the bond forming, and also recognized the ability Anderson had to handle a horse.

“[Mrs. Munroe] asked me to hold a filly so she could take a picture, and she showed me what to do – one leg like this and the other like this – so I did it,” Anderson said. “Her husband was over there talking to the trainer, and she yelled out, 'John, John, John. Look at this. Look at how he holds this horse perfectly. He's a natural.'

“The filly ran and beat the boys in the first race she was in, and they decided they wanted to bring her back to the States,” he continued. “The filly was so attached to me, they said, 'Well, we'd better take you with her.'”

Anderson, about 21 years old at the time, wasn't able to secure a permanent visa in time to follow the filly back to New York, but he tracked the mare's career, and when she retired to Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky, he went to join her in 1981.

Anderson credited the Taylor Made operation for taking his horsemanship skills to the next level, learning under Duncan Taylor and his brothers. His time there ultimately led to him landing his job as a ringman at Keeneland, after his skill showing horses was noticed by the auction company's yearling inspection team. He started with Keeneland during the 1988 November sale.

The sales are typicaly a rapid-fire ordeal, with a two-person crew of ringmen trading off horses. The ones with big hopes might come with a scouting report from the sellers, but for the most part, Anderson and his co-workers are coming in cold every time a horse steps in. With that being said, Anderson has developed a few skills to help him meet each new incoming challenge.

“Most of the time, I have a few seconds to read the horse,” he said. “Sometimes I'll stand at the back door and watch them out there and see how they are. I'll see them acting up with the person out there, and as soon as they hit my hand, it's a different horse. I've had a lot of people come up to me and say, 'That horse was so unruly back there, and as soon as you took them, they just changed. What did you do?'”

So, what does he do? He keeps an even keel and lets the horses feel that energy.

“I have no nervousness in me, that's number one,” Anderson said. “The horse can feel you, all the vibes coming from you, so I try not to let that out there. Plus, I've never really had one that I've been scared of that much, unless he's really big and stud- dish and wants to run over you. Some broodmares are bad, but the yearlings are really easy.”

Keeneland's team of ringmen and women is stacked top-to-bottom with elite handlers of horses, and Anderson's contemporaries recognize his unique ability to get a horse to show its best side.

“Cordell is one of the best that's ever done it,” said Ron Hill, who has worked with Anderson for the better part of two decades. “He and I have a different style, but we get to the same point. His work speaks for itself. There's no man alive that's held as many million-dollar horses as Cordell Anderson. That kind of says it all.”

With an accolade like that, one might get the idea that seven- figure horses would eventually blur together for Anderson, but that would be a mistake. Getting a chance to spend some time with a horse as it goes from promise to profit hasn't gotten old yet, instead giving him another chance to add to his prestigious list.

In particular, Anderson said he fondly remembered the sale of Fusaichi Pegasus, a Mr. Prospector colt co-bred and consigned by Arthur Hancock III's Stone Farm that sold for $4 million at the the 1998 Keeneland July sale. He went on to win the 2000 Kentucky Derby and finish second in the Preakness Stakes.

“Arthur told me this horse was going to sell good, and he said 'When you get him, start smiling, because your smile really works,'” Anderson said. “He was a big horse. I thought he was going to give me a little trouble, but he didn't do anything. A lot of the time, they come in there and just freeze. That sound from up above their head with the auctioneers, they start wondering where in the heck this thing is coming from.”

For all of the expensive horses Anderson has guided through the ring, his recollection is just as strong for the lesser-priced horses who went on to outrun their hammer prices.

One that stuck out in his memory was Curlin, a Smart Strike colt who sold to Kenny McPeek, as agent, for $57,000 at the 2005 September sale. He went on to become a Hall of Famer, two-time Horse of the Year, earner of over $10 million, and one of the top commercial sires in today's marketplace.

“When I saw Curlin was selling for that low, I was out there stretching my head like, 'Come on, aren't you guys gonna buy this horse?'” he said. “There was just something about Curlin that I liked a lot.”

This yearling sale season is unlike any in memory, and that extends to inside the ring, where both Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton have decided against using ringmen to limit potential COVID-19 exposure contacts. Instead, showpeople with the individual consignors are holding on to the horses throughout their time in the ring, while one of Keeneland's regular ringmen stands to the side to provide guidance if it's needed, or step in if a yearling becomes too unruly.

It's a different September for Anderson, who lives in Lexington, Ky., with his son William, but he's got plenty to keep him busy working for the barn of owner Jim McIngvale. After gaining national exposure as one of the main sets of hands on Eclipse Award winner Runhappy, he works with several of Runhappy's debut crop of juveniles owned by McIngvale.

Anderson, 64, is well aware of his reputation as a prodigious calming influence for horses, and he said people still ask him how he does what he does. The root of the question, though, has changed from wanting to know the answer out of amazement after a big sale to wanting to know so they can emulate it themselves. He pointed out fellow Keeneland ringman Aaron Kennedy as a younger person in the industry with a bright future as a “go-to” person to handle the big horses.

To anyone else looking to follow in Anderson's footsteps, he said having soft hands and a Teflon demeanor were crucial. Like a good dance partner, the horse will follow your lead.

“All you have to do is just be patient, be calm, smile, don't let anything bother you,” he said. “If you let things bother you, that's the thing that will most throw you off. Your boss might say something to you that you get mad about, and everything goes out of whack. Once your adrenaline starts, everything gets all screwed up, so you don't want that. You have to swallow it and go on.”
