Freshman Sire Roaring Lion Off The Mark At Leicester

Roaring Lion (Kitten's Joy) became the latest European freshman sire off the mark when Lion of War (GB) notched a debut win in Saturday's British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden S. over seven furlongs at Leicester.

1st-Leicester, £7,000, Mdn, 6-11, 2yo, 7fT, 1:23.36, g/f.
LION OF WAR (GB) (c, 2, Roaring Lion–Momentus {Ire} {SP-Eng}, by Montjeu {Ire}) raced off the pace in ninth through the early fractions of this debut. Tanking forward from halfway, the 7-2 chance seized control approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to defeat Zara's Return (GB) (Zarak {Fr}) by a comfortable 2 1/4 lengths, becoming the first winner from the lone crop of his freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy). “He was a monster compared to the rest of the field, he was professional to post and knew his job,” said rider Cieren Fallon. “I let him get into a rhythm and when I asked him for his effort he gave it to me. He's got a nice action and it was quick ground out there, but he wouldn't want it any quicker than it was today. It's a nice start and there's a lot more improvement there.” Lion of War is the latest of three foals and first scorer produced by Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial third Momentus (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself a half-sister to stakes-winning G2 Joel S. runner-up Sir John Lavery (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam, G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack Fillies S. victrix Race For The Stars (Fusaichi Pegasus), is kin to four black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Hawk Wing (Woodman). Sales history: 7,000gns Ylg '21 TATOCT. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, £3,780.

1ST-TIME STARTER. O-Qatar Racing Ltd; B-Andrew Whitlock Racing Ltd (GB); T-Charlie & Mark Johnston.

Thursday Insights: ‘Talkin’ Horse Tries the Turf

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency
5th-BEL, $90K, Msw, 2yo, 5fT, post time: 5:13 p.m. ET
Ranlo Investments' TALKIN PHAROAH (American Pharoah) acquitted himself well enough in his 4 1/2-furlong bow over the Keeneland main track, finishing a well-backed runner-up Apr. 20, but a surface switch is in the offing, and with good reason. The bay colt is the first foal to the races from the Randall Lowe-bred Just Talkin (Midshipman), five times placed in sprint stakes company–four of those on the grass–and a full-sister to the outstanding GSW and GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint runner-up Lady Shipman. Lowe parted ways with Just Talkin at Fasig-Tipton February when she fetched $160K from Justin Casse before selling to Mountmellick Farm for $675K with this colt in utero at FTKNOV nine months later. Lady Shipman's foal of 2018, Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), has done more than his fair share of advertising for the family, with victories in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2020 and in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and is headed to the G1 King's Stand S. in a few weeks' time. On behalf of Lowe, trainer Wesley Ward went to $260K for Talkin Pharoah at Keeneland September, having been RNAd for $125K at Fasig-Tipton the previous November.

The success of Stonestreet Stables runners sourced overseas has been well documented and they take the wraps off the filly Lady Wildcat (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) here. Purchased by Ben McElroy for 160,000gns out of last year's Tattersalls October Sale, the March foal–by the sire of 2021 G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Camnapelle (Ire)–is out of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Priceless (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), Group 2-placed Doctor Brown (GB) (Dr Fong) and to the dam of Group 3 winner Aeolus (GB) (Araafa {GB}).

The €55,000 Listed Prix de Bagatelle for sophomore fillies and the €55,000 Listed Prix Saint-Patrick for 3-year-old colts and geldings slated for Chantilly on July 2, will both be sponsored by Tattersalls. This partnership marks the first time the sales company has sponsored races at the home of French racing, with the two 1600-metre races highlighting an evening meeting specifically geared toward promoting the attractions of Chantilly as both France's premier training centre, and the venue for the two premier French Classics.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Tattersalls has a rich and enduring relationship with French racing and breeding and the sponsorship of two prestigious listed races at the glorious home of French racing demonstrates the Tattersalls commitment to our friends in Chantilly and the wider French industry.”
