Sceptre Sessions Feature Quintet Of Group 1 Winners As Tattersalls December Mares Catalogue Revealed

The catalogue for the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, headlined by the Sceptre Sessions and featuring five Group 1-winning fillies, is now online. A total of 1,054 lots have been entered to sell from Nov. 28-Dec. 1, with the Sceptre Sessions set for Nov. 28-29.

Leading the high-quality catalogue is four-time Group 1 winner Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 1904); dual Group 1-winning miler Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) (lot 1878); G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Winter Power (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) (lot 1865); and the Group 1 winners La Petite Coco (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) (lot 1887) and Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 1920), both trained by Paddy Twomey.

In addition, Desert Berry (GB) (Green Desert), the dam of G1 Cazoo Derby hero Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), will also go through the ring as lot 1891 and is in foal again to that Newsells Park Stud sire. Other dams of Group 1 winners set to sell include Roger Sez (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}) (lot 1861), the dam of G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}); and Luzia (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) (lot 1873), the dam of G1 Sun Chariot S. victress Fonteyn (GB) (Farhh {GB}), who is in foal to Dream Ahead. There will also be 77 group and listed performers to be offered across both Sceptre Sessions.

Godolphin's 72-strong draft includes Classic heroine Blue Bunting (Dynaformer) in foal to Masar (Ire) as lot 1540. Juddmonte's 28-lot consignment features Atone (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a full-sister to champion Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 1830) and Shielding (GB) (Kingman {GB}) (lot 1833), a half-sister to Grade I winner Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), are both in foal to Frankel (GB). Dual Grade 1 winner Majmu (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) (lot 1757), carrying to Kingman (GB), anchors Shadwell's consignment of nine.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Sceptre Sessions, named after one of the greatest fillies ever to grace the turf, were introduced to showcase the very best race fillies and broodmares and to add a new dimension to the Tattersalls December Mares Sale which is long established as the most prestigious and influential breeding stock sale in Europe. To have catalogued five truly exceptional Group 1 winning fillies as well as the dam of this year's Derby winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is the best possible start and suggests that the new 'Sceptre Sessions' have immediately captured the imagination of some of the world's most successful owners and breeders.

“In addition to the array of elite fillies and broodmares in the two 'Sceptre Sessions', the Tattersalls December Mares Sale also features consignments of real quality from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms, and Shadwell Estates alongside dispersals from Normandie and Southcourt Studs, all of which has combined to produce an outstanding catalogue for Europe's premier sale of breeding stock.”

Record-Breaking October Yearling Sale Draws To A Close At Tattersalls

After a frenetic two weeks of selling, the curtain lowered on the final day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, with the single-session Book 4 adding another 319,000gns to the previous three books' 199,006,100gns aggregate. A total of 53 yearlings found new homes of 73 offered, for a clearance rate of 73%. The average of 6,019gns and the media of 5,000gns were both well up on 2021's figures, leading to gains of 50.3% for the former and 66.7% for the latter.

Topping Saturday's sale was a daughter of G2 Richmond S. hero Land Force (Ire) (lot 2086) from Natton House Thoroughbreds, Ltd. From the same family as G1 Irish Derby and G1 Sheema Classic hero and sire Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling), she went to Alfa Site for 23,000gns.

Overall, the October Yearling Sale featured the world's most expensive yearling to sell this year at 2.8 million gns, a son of Frankel (GB) (lot 221) out of the Group 3 winner and G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). The dam is a full-sister to three-time Group 1 winner and sire Too Darn Hot (GB), as well as G2 Middleton S. heroine Lah Ti Dar (GB), who was second in the G1 St Leger S. and third in both the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. and G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Book 1 closed with 73 horses, or 17.2% of those sold, changing hands for 500,000gns or more. There were also 16 seven-figure lots. Book 2 also set records for turnover (60,780,500gns, +11%), average (96,020gns, +14%) and median (70,000gns, +13%). The demand for quality bloodstock did not slacken in Book 3 either, with gains of 9% in total turnover to 11,554,600gns. The average advanced 8.6% to 24,428gns and the median also increased to 20,000gns (+11.1%)

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said on Saturday, “This has been the most extraordinary Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Book 1 set the ball rolling and it has rolled all the way through to the very end with more yearlings sold than ever before for the astounding sum of 199 million guineas.

“It has been a phenomenal show of strength from start to finish with buyers from throughout the world drawn to Tattersalls and the unique environment of Newmarket by the promise of outstanding yearlings presented by so many of the top breeders and consignors not only from Britain and Ireland, but from throughout Europe. The consistent support of the consignors for the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale is the key to its abiding reputation as Europe's premier yearling sale and to see so many people so richly rewarded over the past two weeks has been wonderful.

“There is a huge amount of hard work and dedication involved in the journey from foaling to the October Yearling Sales at Tattersalls Park Paddocks and the results of the past two weeks are a tribute to all those involved at every level. The buyers come to Tattersalls in October confident that they will find quality yearlings to suit every budget which will go on to achieve great things on racecourses around the world and never before has this been so evident. The demand we have witnessed throughout the past two weeks has been truly global and above all it reflects the enduring appeal of the sport of horse racing which captivates so many people throughout the world and brings so many buyers to Newmarket and the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale year after year.”

Trueshan Prevails In Long Distance Cup Thriller

Alan King trainee Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}–Shao Line {Fr}, by General Holme) had annexed the last two renewals of Ascot's G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, but had failed to find a way past Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in last month's G2 Doncaster Cup. Having earlier run third in a thrilling edition of August's G1 Goodwood Cup, he was back at the top of his game to exact revenge on that rival and registered a hat-trick of victories in the two-mile marathon after a ding-dong tussle. Hollie Doyle was keen for a prominent pitch early and positioned the 11-8 favourite in fourth after passing the judge first time. Coming under pressure turning for home, Trueshan locked horns with Coltrane on the front end passing the quarter-mile marker and refused to buckle under a drive in the closing stages, hitting the line with a head advantage. Godolphin's Trawlerman (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) fared best of the remainder and finished three lengths adrift in third.

“The ground was right today and Trueshan had to be at his best,” the winning trainer said. “Hollie thought, with a furlong to go, she'd go and win and win well, but Coltrane was not stopping and he came back at us. He had to be right up there today to hold them off. I didn't enjoy watching it, but I'll enjoy the replay. He was in a lovely place and travelling well and, turning in, I thought we had a good chance. I'm very good friends with the Mariscottis, who own Coltrane and I thought they're going to come and do us again. I think, last time at Doncaster, he was remembering Goodwood and wouldn't let himself down. He came to challenge and he went right, he went left and he just wouldn't go forward. He had a week down at Jamie McGee's on the water treadmill, which he absolutely loves, and then we started training him for this. He's had two or three days on the treadmill after his bits of work, which just loosens him up and it's got him back. I took the view that, win, lose or draw today, I had all winter to get him back. As long as we mind him, he could be around for a few years yet. I just want a very wet June, because the one thing I'd love to run him in is the [G1] Gold Cup [at Royal Ascot].”

Doyle added, “What a horse. I am speechless to be honest. Alan King is the maker of this horse and what he has done today, on the back of his last two runs, is phenomenal. It was really rough going into that first bend. I had Wordsworth on my outside, I was caught in a pocket and it was one of them where you either kick in or get flattened. I kicked in and some people suffered as a consequence. For someone like me, I'm quite emotionally invested in the sport and days like this mean the world to me.”

Reflecting on the performance of Coltrane, trainer Andrew Balding said, “Coltrane is just so brave and tough and was beaten by a fine horse on the day.” John Gosden added, “Trawlerman has run a great race and had a lovely run. For an Ebor winner to come and mix it with the Group horses is great.”

Trueshan is the leading performer and lone stakes winner for dual scorer Shao Line (Fr) (General Holme), who has five winners to her credit and is a granddaughter of Marie de Lempire (Fr) (Faristan {GB}), herself the dam of the stakes-winning Dom Lurcy (Dom Racine {Fr}). Marie de Lempire is kin to the stakes-winning Marie d'Ivors (Fr) (Rheffic {Fr}) and the mare Herila (Fr) (Bold Lad), who in turn is the second dam of G1 Derby Italiano hero Houmayoun Fr) (Shernazar {Ire}) and three-time stakes victrix Hanzala (Akarad {Fr}), with this being the tail line of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Altissima (Klairon {Fr}).
