Lonsdale On Point In The Huxley

Coolmore and Westerberg's 575,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling and 'TDN Rising Star' Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Sweepstake {Ire}, by Acclamation {GB}) made a winning seasonal return in last month's G3 Alleged S. at the Curragh, having been on the shelf for almost a year after running seventh in last term's G1 2000 Guineas, and added to his tallies in 2021's G3 Tyros S. and G2 Futurity S. with a battling effort in Friday's G2 IRE-Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Huxley S at Chester.

Positioned in second passing the judge first time, the well-backed 5-6 favourite came under increased pressure from halfway and stayed on in resolute fashion once gaining an edge into the straight to hold the late rattle of Mujtaba (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a neck, providing Ryan Moore with a record eighth renewal of the extended 10-furlong contest.

“He was a good 2-year-old who won a Listed race, a Group 3 and a Group 2, but he wasn't around for most of last year,” commented Moore. “It wasn't very pretty, but he's a real galloper and he probably hasn't been round a tight track like this before. He's only really been to the Curragh, Leopardstown and Ascot and he was just a bit unsure what to do with himself. Today's race was well up to standard and the track didn't suit him, but he has a great attitude, to be fair to him, and plenty of ability. It was a very good performance.”

Bumper Catalogue For The Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale

A total of 416 stores have been chosen for the Tattersalls Ireland 2023 Derby Sale, set to take place June 28-29 at Fairyhouse, the sales company announced on Tuesday. All horses catalogued for the Derby Sale are eligible for the 2024 €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland George Mernagh Memorial Sales Bumper.

The Derby Sale achieved more winners at the Dublin Racing Festival, Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Festival than any other store sale again this year and has claimed 12 Grade 1s in 2023.

“Exceptional doesn't come close to what we have on offer at this year's Derby Sale,” Simon Kerins, CEO of Tattersalls Ireland, said. “Our team have worked tirelessly with vendors to handpick the best individuals with pedigrees to match, resulting in an outstanding line-up of superior National Hunt prospects–a catalogue that is unparalleled in quality.”

Running Lion Powers To Impressive Pretty Polly Triumph

Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion–Bella Nouf {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) improved off a debut fourth at Newmarket's July venue with wide-margin wins in one-mile heats at Lingfield and Chelmsford last term and opened this campaign with a decisive score on sophomore return at Kempton last month. Back on the turf for the first time since that first-up effort, she rewarded the race sponsor David Howden with a first win of the Guineas meet and provided the Gosden stable with a seventh triumph in this usually informative G1 Oaks pointer.

The 10-3 chance settled into a comfortable rhythm and raced in a midfield fifth through halfway. Powering forward to loom large on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, she was soon in splendid isolation and surged clear of toiling rivals on the final ascent to easily outclass the hitherto undefeated Sumo Sam (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) by 4 1/2 lengths.

“We brought her down here for a piece of work and Oisin [Murphy] said we should go for the Pretty Polly rather than the 1000 Guineas as she'll need the mile-and-a-quarter, so we've made the right decision,” said John Gosden. “It will be very interesting with this filly whether she's more a Prix de Diane or an Oaks filly. We've got more trials to come, there's the Musidora at York and the Newbury trial, so we'll see how it shapes up. The jockey's first reaction was to possibly stay at a mile-and-a-quarter and I'm always interested as to what they say when they come back straight away, not when they've had time to think. We'll give it a lot of thought and the idea would be to go to one of the Oaks, which one it is I don't know.”

Running Lion becomes the second black-type scorer for Bella Nouf (GB) (Dansili {GB}), whose first is G3 Sweet Solera S. victrix Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Mukhadram’s Lady Ewelina Goes 3-For-3 In Cologne Feature

Andreas Wohler trainee Lady Ewelina (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}–Quadri {GB}, by Polish Precedent) closed her unbeaten two-race juvenile campaign with a clear-cut victory Hannover's Listed Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung and made a winning seasonal return in Sunday's G3 Karin Baronin von Ullmann – Schwarzgold-Rennen at Cologne.

The 7-2 chance, who debuted with a 10-length rout at Warsaw in August, was steadied to race at the back of the main cluster in seventh. Gradually improving from halfway, she made relentless headway in the straight to launch her bid approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to prevail by a half-length from G3 Preis der Winterkonigin third Tamarinde (Ger) (Amaron {GB}).

“She really is a classy filly, but may have actually needed this race to bring her forward,” said Wohler. “She is definitely in need of a longer trip, so I am not quite sure about running her in the [G2] German 1000 Guineas.”
