Tatts Book 1 Millionaire Ylang Ylang Powers To TDN Rising Stardom At The Curragh

There was an abundance of pre-race hype surrounding the Aidan O'Brien-trained debutante Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who was hammered down to 8-13 favouritism for Friday evening's Kildare House Hotel Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at the Curragh, and she rewarded that faith with a 'TDN Rising Star' display in the seven-furlong test. Relaxed under Ryan Moore during the preliminaries, she was professional on the lead throughout and extended her margin of superiority, keeping on powerfully under mild coaxing, inside the final quarter-mile to easily account for Dollerina (Ire) (Territories {Ire}) by an impressive 2 3/4 lengths. She becomes Frankel's 34th Rising Star and joins a list which includes dual Group 1-winning G3 Hoppings S. runner-up Nashwa (GB).

“She was never away [from home], as she was so babyish, she was working very well and we're delighted with her,” O'Brien said. “It was nice to see her doing that and she's probably going to come on leaps and bounds. Ryan [Moore] gave her one back-hander to get down and stretch and said she was only playing in front. The [G2] Debutante S. should be perfect for her. She's working with the good colts no problem, which is usually a very good sign.”

Pedigree Notes
Ylang Ylang is the first of two foals out of Listed Pretty Polly S., Listed Height Of Fashion S. and Listed Chalice S. placegetter Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal). Observations: Frankel Book 1 Sensation Debuts at The Curragh

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Insights features 1.5-million Tattersalls October Yearling graduate Ylang Ylang.

17.30 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
YLANG YLANG (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who debuts for Ballydoyle in the maiden won in the last two years by the subsequent Group 1 performers Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), was one of the six Frankel millionaire lots at the most recent Book 1 Sale. The second-highest-priced filly at that auction, the March-foaled bay is the first foal out of the G1 Fillies' Mile fourth Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal), a half to the accomplished pair Viva Pataca (GB) (Marju {Ire}) and Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Ryan Moore rides her in preference to the stable's Opera Singer (Justify), a half-sister to War Front's top-level winners Hit It A Bomb and Brave Anna, while there is another regally-bred individual in the line-up in Michael Ryan's Finsceal Luas (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) , the 11th foal out of his champion Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley) starting out for Jim Bolger.

14.45 Doncaster, Novice, £9,950, 2yo, 7f 6yT
ARABIC LEGEND (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}), the second foal out of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's GI E.P.Taylor S. heroine Sheikha Reika (Fr) (Shamardal), is poised to make his debut for the Andrew Balding stable. Also starting out is Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Al Mootamarid (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a Marco Botti-trained half-brother to none other than Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who despite that cost a mere 200,000gns at the Tatts Craven Breeze-Up; and Godolphin's Stormy Waves (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a Charlie Appleby-trained grandson of the prolific producer Pieds De Plume (Fr) (Seattle Slew) who was a 525,000gns Book 1 purchase.

17.00 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo, 6fT
BENNU (IRE) (Magna Grecia {Ire}) is a big-deal representative of Coolmore's first-crop sire, being the 11th foal out of the Niarchos Family's excellent producer Alpha Lupi (Ire) (Rahy). Trained for the operation by Willie Browne, the May-foaled half-brother to the heavyweight pair Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and the former's group 1-winning full-sister Discoveries (Ire) is up against some big-yard runners including Ballydoyle's second-string and fellow newcomer House Of Aviz (Uncle Mo), a full-brother to the GIII Santa Ysabel S. winner and GI Starlet S. and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Donna Veloce.

20.25 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 3yo/up, 10fT
SATURN (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) carries on the theme set earlier on the card by his relative Bennu (Ire) (Magna Grecia {Ire}), with this Jessie Harrington-trained newcomer the landmark first foal out of the brilliant Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). Grey like his dam, the Niarchos colour-bearer has a wide draw to contend with on his racecourse bow.

Olly Murphy Snaps Up 250k Doctor Dino Top Lot On Day One At Derby Sale

The British-based trainers dominated the top end of the day one Derby Sale trade at Tattersalls Ireland on Wednesday with Aiden and Olly Murphy snapping up two of the most expensive geldings to go through the ring, including the Doctor Dino (Fr) sale-topper at €250,000.

Leading bloodstock agent Aiden and his son Olly, who is based at Warren Chase Stables in England, also splashed out €200,000 on a Saint Des Saints (Fr) gelding that was consigned by Moanmore Stables.

The pair's total spend on day one was just shy of €500,000 across three geldings and, speaking about the top lot, which Aiden opened up at €100,000, the agent said, “He has not turned a hair for two days. I have seen him time and time again. He is magnificent and he is for Olly to train and is for an existing client. He is just a gorgeous horse and we are delighted to get him.”

Explaining the six-figure opening bid, Murphy added, “He was always going to make more and we were in a bit of a hurry!”

The gelding was sold by the County Cork-based Coolmara Stables, of which, Cathal Mariga commented, “We were hoping for that sort of figure. We bought him as a foal privately from Ennel Bloodstock in Westmeath and before Jonbon came out.

“We always had Douvan in his pedigree and to get another Grade 1 winner, it was a nice update to get. He has been a great horse to work with at home, he did everything right, did not put a foot wrong. He has been very busy, he has had around 60 shows over the two days, with a lot of return visitors.”

Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls also made their presence felt in the afternoon when going to €205,000 to secure a Walk In The Park (Ire) gelding from Peter Nolan's draft.

A total of 147 lots sold on day one to the tune of €7,652,500, which averages out at €52,058. The median stood at €40,000 at close of play on Wednesday.
