Churchill’s War Rooms Powers To TDN Rising Stardom At Doncaster

Owen Burrows snagged the 2020 edition of Doncaster's Simon Piggott Memorial EBF Novice S. with subsequent G2 Champagne S. runner-up Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal) and he has another contender for the upper levels after Brook Farm Bloodstock's War Rooms (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}–Apticanti, by Aptitude) powered to 'TDN Rising Stardom' with an impressive debut display in the seven-furlong test.

The 11-2 chance raced in mid division after a stuttering start. Easing closer to the front rank once past halfway, he surged to the front in taking fashion approaching the final furlong and was ridden clear in the closing stages to easily account for User Amistoso (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by an impressive 4 3/4 lengths. Subsequent G1 Dewhurst S. runner-up and G3 Goldene Peitsche victor Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) attained 'TDN Rising Star' status in the 2021 renewal of this contest. War Rooms becomes the second Rising Star for his sire, whose first was River Thames (Ire).

“He gave me a good feel on the way to post and they went a strong pace, I thought, on that [soft] ground,” said winning rider Jim Crowley. “He stayed very well and galloped out past the line really well. He's been doing things nicely at home and he'd have learnt plenty today. He's got a good mind on him and he'll be a lovely horse for next year. He's a rangy horse and he'll be quite smart over a mile-and-a-quarter next year.”

War Rooms, half-brother to a weanling filly by Australia (GB), is the seventh of eight live foals produced by a half-sister to G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire Distant Music (Distant View) and G3 Lancashire Oaks third New Orchid (Quest for Fame {GB}). Descendants of the May-foaled bay's second dam Musicanti (Nijinsky II), herself a half-sister to MGISW sire Vanlandingham (Cox's Ridge), also include three-time Group 1 winner Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine African Rose (GB) (Observatory) and MGSW sire Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

First Stakes Winner For Ollie Sangster At Sandown

Ollie Sangster trainee Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}–Lady Pimpernel {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}) recovered from a slow getaway to snag her June 27 debut at Newbury and stepped forward to register a first black-type success for the freshman conditioner in Friday's Listed European Bloodstock News Star S. at Sandown. The 9-4 second favourite was less than perfect at the break once more and occupied a midfield fifth for the most part here. Making eyecatching headway on the bridle in the straight to join the front rank passing the quarter-mile marker, she came under pressure approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to deny Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) by a half-length for a career high.

“Oisin [Murphy] gave her a lovely ride and I'm delighted,” said Sangster. “I was on the fence this morning having seen the [weather] report from last night, but I spoke to [Ballylinch Stud's] John O'Connor and he was fairly confident New Bays go on the [soft] ground, so we thought we would take our chance. It was probably not ideal ground, but she dug deep. She is a tenacious and courageous filly and, hopefully, we might have some nice targets later in the year. I've some nice juveniles, but she is at the top at the pile at the moment.” Looking forward to possible future targets, he added, “The [G3] Prestige at Goodwood might be for her and then I suppose something like the [G2] Rockfel and maybe the [G1] Fillies' Mile. That is ambitious and we will see how we progress between now and then. I'd like to think she will stay the mile next year and she strikes me as a filly that will stay as she relaxes well and she finishes out well too. I'm lucky to have a horse like this in the yard and it is nice to have good support and nice horses to work with.”

Shuwari is the fourth of five foals and one of three scorers produced by GIII Rober J Frankel S. victrix Lady Pimpernel (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), herself a granddaughter of G3 Deutscher Stutenpreis winner and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) third Anno Luce (GB) (Old Vic {GB}). Her second dam Angeleno (Ire) (Belong To Me) is a half-sister to Listed Prix de l'Avre winner Air Trooper (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). Shuwari's fourth dam is G2 Preis der Diana-winning dual German champion Anna Paola (Ger) (Prince Ippi {Ger}). The March-foaled chestnut is kin to a yearling filly by Nathaniel (Ire).

Format Change Announced for Tattersalls Ireland November NH Foal Sale

This year's Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Foal Sale will be catalogued by day in alphabetical order, the auction house announced on Tuesday. The new format now aligns with all Tattersalls sales in Ireland and is a well-established format across the industry. There will be no change to the foal-selling days as each day will be treated as a separate entity and catalogued alphabetically by dam with the same starting letter applying to each day throughout the four-day foal section.

The benefits of the A-Z lotting system will offer advantages to both purchasers and vendors. Barns will now be a safer area for buyers to view foals with less congestion, allowing more time and space to view individual lots. Also, vendors and consignors with larger consignments will be able to work from one base for the duration of the sale and not have to move to a different location each day.

The November National Hunt Sale will take place from Nov. 10-16.

Wildcard Entry Midnight Lion Tops Tattersalls Summer Sale

The re-located one-day Tattersalls Summer Sale, held Tuesday at Newmarket's Park Paddocks, saw 77 lots of the 96 offered pass through the ring as sold (80%) for gross receipts of 778,200gns.

Formerly under the now defunct Tattersalls Ascot umbrella, the sale averaged 10,106gns, and the median was 5,000gns.
Horses owned by Rabbah Bloodstock were offered by a variety of agents and filled the top three spots, with wildcard entry Midnight Lion (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) (lot 79) bringing 85,000gns from Nick Taylor, assistant to Tom Malone Bloodstock, to top the day. The recent Goodwood winner, who was offered by Kingsley Park, will now move on to a jumps career.

“He was clearly the pick of the day for us, and he has been bought for Paul Nicholls,” Taylor said. “We liked him when we saw him, Nathaniel is a big plus to go jumping, he has a lovely soft ground action and is just the type of horse we are looking for. He has the size and Charlie Johnston was very positive about him.”

Stephensen Bloodstock went to 72,000gns to secure the second-highest priced lot of the day, the 3-year-old Laafi (Fr) (Cloth of Stars {Ire}) (lot 74). The winner of the EBF Stallions Golden Horn Maiden S. at Nottingham last year was consigned by Somerville Lodge. She is out of the Smart Strike mare Mediterenea (Fr), who is a half-sister to multiple Group/Grade 1 winner and sire Erupt (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

The 4-year-old filly Timeless Melody (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 51) rounded out the top three on the day when the hammer fell at 42,000gns for the Leicester novice winner. Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock signed the ticket for the daughter of Dufay (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who came from the Somerville Lodge consignment. The filly's second dam is Group 1 winner White Moonstone (Dynaformer).

“She has been bought for Alec Waugh's Normandy-based Jedburgh Stud,” Coleman said. “Alec has had a lot of luck, as many people have, with mares by Teofilo–he is a phenomenal broodmare sire, and just getting better and better.”
