Barney Roy’s German Adventure Yields A Third Group 1 Success

Godolphin’s well-travelled Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) began this latest European campaign with a third in Royal Ascot’s G1 Prince of Wales’s S. last month and the gelded bay was all heart to claim Sunday’s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. The even-money favourite sported temporary headgear during the preliminaries of the 10-furlong contest and the soothing effect contributed to a smooth passage off the clear leaders in rear for the most part. Making headway in the straight when ridden along with a quarter-mile remaining, he joined the front rank, despite rolling around, entering the final furlong and was driven out to earn a third elite-level success in game fashion. Try as he might, last term’s G1 Deutsches Derby fourth Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) could not find a way past in the latter stages and was denied by a neck, with Joseph O’Brien-trained G3 Meld S. victor Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) running on well to finish 1 1/4 lengths adrift in third.

“We were a little concerned when the rain came this morning as all of his best form is on fast ground,” said William Buick of the 2017 G1 St James’s Palace S. and this year’s G1 Jebel Hatta hero. “I thought the German horses set a very good standard, it was a very tough race and he struggled with the conditions from a long way out. He’s a high-class horse and his courage and ability got him to win the race. We thought the pace would be good and he jumped a little bit slow from the gates. We were positioned one place further back than where I wanted to be, but he was comfortable and relaxed. I followed Quest The Moon as I knew he’d take me into the race and I got a nice lead off him.”

Winning trainer Charlie Appleby added, “Barney Roy and Spotify flew in yesterday and stabled well overnight, but we came here looking for good-to-firm ground and the rain was a negative for our two horses. There was a strong pace from the start, the local horses ran very well and stamina really came into play.” He continued, “I’d like to thank Munich for putting the race on and allowing us to come. I’d also like to thank the sponsors very much for sponsoring the race at such challenging times for everybody. We’re delighted to be here, at Group 1 level, for Godolphin and very much appreciate everybody’s support.”

Barney Roy is the first of five foals and one of three winners produced by a daughter of G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. and G3 Brownstown Stud S. victress Cheyenne Star (Ire) (Mujahid). He is half to Listed Maggie Dickson Gold Cup runner-up Wisdom Mind (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the once-raced 2-year-old colt Noble Dynasty (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who shaped with a deal of promise when a debut second at Newmarket last month. Descendants of his Listed Garnet S.-winning third dam Charita (Ire) (Lycius), herself a half-sister to GSW G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua second Stanott (Ire) (Mukaddamah), include ill-fated MG1SW speedster Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}).

Godolphin’s 3.1-Million Half to Golden Horn Makes Winning Debut at HQ

Dhahabi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) understandably caused a stir when knocked down for 3.1-million guineas at last year’s renewal of Tattersalls’ October Book 1 sale and the half-brother to MG1SW G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) duly delivered a debut win in Saturday’s British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden S. over seven furlongs at Newmarket.

3rd-Newmarket, £6,400, Mdn, 7-25, 2yo, 7fT, 1:25.70, g/f.
DHAHABI (IRE) (c, 2, Frankel {GB}–Fleche d’Or {GB}, by Dubai Destination) caused a stir when knocked down for 3.1-million guineas at last year’s renewal of Tattersalls’ October Book 1 sale and the half-brother to MG1SW G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) duly delivered a debut win here. The March-foaled bay was slightly sluggish at the break and tanked forward from a position in rear to go third at halfway. Coming under pressure with three furlongs remaining, the 15-8 chalk was driven along to challenge passing the eighth pole and ridden out on the climb to withstand the late charge of 50-1 poke Dinoo (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by a neck. Full-brother to a yearling filly, Dhahabi is the sixth of seven surviving foals and fifth winner out of an unraced half-sister to G1 Coronation S. heroine Rebecca Sharp (GB) (Machiavellian). He is also kin to MGSP Listed Ballymacoll Stud S. victress Eastern Belle (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}). Sales history: 3,100,000gns Ylg ’19 TATOCT. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $5,297.

Kitten’s Joy Filly, Dialed In Colt Top Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale

The relocated Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale, transferred from its original venue and date at Fairyhouse in May to Park Paddocks, Newmarket in July due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, saw sustained healthy and strong trade throughout the one-day session.

Overall, 125 horses were sold for an aggregate of €3,816,490 (US$4,448,506), an average price of €30,532 (US$35,588), an improvement of 9 percent compared with 2019, and a median price of €21,978 (US$25,617), an increase of 22 percent. The clearance rate was 85 percent.

The sale was conducted in sterling and four lots sold for six-figures with the Grove Stud consigned filly by Kitten's Joy fetching the top price of £220,000 (US$281,623) (Lot 74).

Her sale was a serious pinhook result for consignor Brendan Holland of Grove Stud – she cost just $27,000 as a yearling last summer.

“I bought her off my pals at Hunter Valley. She has done really well, she is a lovely, lovely filly, she has loads of quality. She was always very natural, I am delighted it is a great result,” said Holland.

The filly's sale was 2020's penultimate breeze up offering from Grove Stud and Holland added: “It is a great end to the season. I look forward to relaxing and watching Goodwood next week, but we have got yearlings in and we are starting to prep them.”

Another of the pinhook results of the day came late in the day – the colt by Dialed In, named Onesmoothoperator, purchased by Ger Kennedy of Sherbourne Lodge last autumn for $5,000, sold for £140,000 (US$179,217) today (Lot 244). He was bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock, standing on the stairs with trainer David Simcock.

He didn't do a fast time at all, but he is bred to be a [mile and a quarter] horse so you would not expect it – he is out of a Medaglia D'Oro mare from Stormy Atlantic's family,” said Brown. “He is a phenomenal mover.  he has a wonderful way of going. He has been bought for our Never Say Die re-sale syndicate. We will put him in a field for two weeks now and he will probably go to David's in September.”

“Ger found him late on in the U.S. at the Fasig October Sale,” said Yvonne Kennedy. “Buying yearlings in France and the U.S. has been good to us this year, and there has been a lot of interest in the horse this spring.”

Ger added: “The sale companies have all been brilliant with everything this year, and there is no place like an auction ring to find the true value of a horse.”

At the conclusion of the sale, Tattersalls Ireland Director Simon Kerins commented:

“Firstly, I would like to thank the vendors who have risen to the challenge of today's sale being relocated to Park Paddocks at the 11th hour. Like many in the bloodstock industry, the breeze up consignors have had to deal with difficult circumstances in the run up to the 2020 Breeze Up season, notably with today's sale original dated in May and they have met the change in date and venue with tremendous positivity and it was pleasing to see several vendors have excellent results.

“The bloodstock industry is truly resilient, and this was evident today by the strong demand for the choice lots. It was immensely satisfying to sell the second highest price ever for a two-year-old at the Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale with Grove Stud's Kitten's Joy filly selling for £220,000 (US$281,623) to David Simcock. There were considerable increases in the average of £27,284 (US$34,919) (up 9 percent from €27,992 (US$32,627) in 2019) and median of £20,000 (US$25,596) (up 22 percent from €18,000 (US$20,980) in 2019) considering that the numbers offered were down significantly on 2019, while the high clearance rate of 85 percent also needs to be acknowledged. We can now look forward to the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale returning to Fairyhouse Racecourse and Tattersalls Ireland respectively in 2021.

The Tattersalls Ireland team look with positivity to hosting our Derby Sale and May Store Sale on Aug. 18-20, followed by the August NH Sale on Aug. 27-28 in Ireland.”

Darley stallion Charming Thought (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who operated out of Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £5,000 this year, became the latest European freshman sire off the mark when the Tick Tock Partnership’s Alicestar (GB) claimed a debut score going a shade over six furlongs in Wednesday’s Southwold Novice Auction S. at Great Yarmouth.
