Threat Anchors Tattersalls August Catalogue

MGSW Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) is the highest-rated horse at 112 in the 774-strong inaugural Tattersalls August Sale catalogue, which was released on Sunday. Consigned by Richard Hannon’s East Everleigh Stables for Cheveley Park Stud as lot 469, the chestnut is one of 541 colts and geldings in and out of training set to go under the hammer from Aug. 24-26. There are also 214 fillies in and out of training, as well as 19 broodmares set to sell in Newmarket. A winner of the G2 Gimcrack S. and the G2 Champagne S. as a juvenile, Threat is out of a daughter of European highweight Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector) and is from the same family as European champion Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Originating as a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the sale is very similar in format to the Tattersalls July Sale, and features full drafts from Ballydoyle Stables, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms, Rabbah Bloodstock, Shadwell Stud, The Castlebridge Consignment and Jamie Railton among many others.

Other lots of interest include recent listed winner Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 706) from William Haggas’s Somerville Lodge Stables and fellow listed scorer Fort Myers (War Front) (lot 387), one of nine from Ballydoyle. Of Juddmonte’s 24 homebreds, GSP Georgeville (GB) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) (lot 436), and the unraced Sophistry (GB) (Make Believe {GB}) (lot 445), a half-sister to G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud hero Epicuris (GB) (Rail Link {GB}) star. Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell boasts 61 lots, with the 100-rated Elwazir (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 667) one to watch out for, while 71 lots are slated to enter the ring for Godolphin and Rabbah, featuring the 107-rated Walkinthesand (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) (lot 699) and a 95-rated son of Dubawi (Ire) in Country (GB) (lot 701) for Hannon and Haggas, respectively. One of 41 from Jamie Railton, SP Pom Malpic (Fr) (Pomellato {Ger}) (lot 486) earned her black-type with a second in the Listed Prix La Fleche at Chantilly.

The Castlebridge Consignment fields 79 lots, the largest consignment in the sale. Lot 51, Mzyoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to the late MG1SW and Group 1 sire Society Rock (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), will be offered by Castlebridge with her Exceed And Excel (Aus) colt at foot and carrying to sire-on-the-rise Night of Thunder (Ire).

“The COVID related circumstances surrounding the decision to introduce a Tattersalls August Sale are well documented and we have been hugely encouraged by both the quality and quantity of entries,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “Originally pencilled in for two days, we have extended the sale to three days to accommodate the number of entries and the catalogue has the strength and depth that will appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield. Despite the current challenges, our recent July Sale achieved a phenomenal 96% clearance rate which demonstrates the enduring appeal of sales of this nature at Tattersalls, and we have already received extremely positive feedback from our myriad of overseas markets.”

Bated Breath’s Cairn Gorm Takes the Cabourg

Unbeaten entering Sunday’s G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg, Cairn Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) kept his tally secure with a battling effort in the Deauville sunshine. Helped by the fact that his compatriot and the 11-10 market-leader Mighty Gurkha (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus}) was left at the start, the chestnut who was carrying the Hunscote Stud colours tracked the pace and was perfectly positioned before hitting the front passing the furlong pole. Asserting from there under Tom Marquand, the 17-5 second favourite scored by a length from Jubilation (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a head back to Prince Lancelot (GB) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in third. “He’s a very nice horse and the ground was quick enough for him today, so he was a little bit hesitant early on,” the winning rider commented. “When he found his stride, he really went and is still undefeated. Whether he’s good enough for a higher level or not you’d only know when you tried.”

This was an inspired piece of placing by connections, with Cairn Gorm having previous won on debut at Windsor June 22 and when under a subsequent penalty at Newbury July 8. Trainer Mick Channon said, “We thought he was a nice horse, but he had to step up today and he has. He’s won a group three going away, so we’ll have to think about taking him back here for the [G1] Prix Morny later in the month.”

Cairn Gorm is out of In Your Time (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is a three-parts sister to the G3 Musidora S. winner Time Away (Ire) by Dalakhani’s sire Darshaan (GB). Her own descendants are headed by the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor), while she is kin to the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Time Ahead (GB) (Spectrum {Ire}) and the listed-placed Moment of Time (GB) (Rainbow Quest). She is in turn the dam of the G2 Crystal Mile scorer Chief Ironside (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). The third dam is the four-times group 1-winning champion Time Charter (Ire) (Saritamer) who was also responsible for the G2 Jockey Club S.-winning pair Time Allowed (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and Zinaad (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). In Your Time’s yearling colt is by Havana Gold (Ire).

Fourth Goodwood Cup For Super Stradivarius

There was a degree of worry and stress for the connections and abundant fans of Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to endure during Tuesday’s G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, but ultimately it was the familiar outcome as Bjorn Nielsen’s chestnut wrought a fourth victory in this historic prize. Momentarily pinned behind Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) inside the last two furlongs, the 4-7 favourite had to make his own racing room as the last furlong neared but by now there seems very little that he is incapable of. Picking up to overhaul them in the final 100 yards, he again dominated the climax of yet another top staying prize to step closer to immortality. Despite the tense nature of the preceding moments, there was a comfortable air to his length verdict over the long-time leader Nayef Road, while the G1 Irish Derby hero Santiago was unable to capitalise on his 15-pound weight-for-age concession 1 1/4 lengths behind in third. With this latest momentous achievement under his belt, the ever-composed Stradivarius now heads down a very different route with the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the owner-breeder’s and trainer’s sights. “We talked about this a year ago and John [Gosden] said if he stays healthy we’ll train him for the Arc,” Nielsen commented. “There is no [Weatherbys Hamilton £1million] bonus this time and he can have six weeks off now and probably go for the [G2 Prix] Foy three weeks before the Arc. Unfortunately, we won’t have our jockey so we’ll have to find a substitute.”

These staying races are fast regaining their prior glory and there are few who would deny that Stradivarius now sits alongside the revered staying greats such as Sagaro (GB), Ardross (Ire) and Yeats (Ire). Nielsen was typically humble when asked for his opinion. “That’s for other people to decide, but I think he deserves to be in the conversation,” he said. “They are rare horses and it’s amazing that he turned up on my doorstep–there is a lot of luck involved.”

Much water has passed under the bridge since Stradivarius played the role of young upstart when denying the dual Goodwood Cup hero Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) his own landmark in the 2017 edition of this race. Since that first top-level success, which was followed by a third placing in a strong renewal of the G1 St Leger, he has garnered two £1million Weatherbys Hamilton bonuses and dealt with a list of classy performers in this division including Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}), Torcedor (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}). Like his stable’s leading lady Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), he seems to have an insatiable appetite for prestige events which shows no sign of diminishing.

Sticking to the inside up the straight as the expertly-ridden Nayef Road set down to see off all-comers, Frankie was going best passing two out but was being leaned on by Eagles By Day (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) which kept him a pocket. As Santiago took on the Mark Johnston front-runner, Ballydoyle’s 3-year-old may have been briefly ahead but Silvestre de Sousa conjured more from Nayef Road to re-assert. Stradivarius had meanwhile muscled his way out into the clear and when he needed his trademark acceleration to overwhelm that duo it was as potent as ever.

Just as he had in 2019, Dettori was revelling in completing a high-profile double in less than a week, supplementing the high he experienced on Saturday with Enable. “What a horse. He’s given 15 pounds away, everyone rode to beat me and he still gets out and wins,” he commented. “He’s an amazing horse and well done to Bjorn Nielsen. I go from a superstar mare in Enable to this champion horse in three days. It’s the stuff of dreams. I just had to be patient and when you have good horses the gap will come. I’ve been in that position before and it’s not nice to be there, but we got out.”

“Obviously, I thought the biggest danger was Santiago, so I was trying to get behind him. I thought, with a 15-pound weight spread, he would try to make the most of it and probably make it a true test from four out but it turned into a two-furlong sprint,” he added. “For a minute I was boxed in, but if you want to sprint with Stradivarius you’ve got to be pretty good. For a furlong he took a little bit of organising, then he was amazing–he can put two lengths on any horse in a furlong. It’s amazing for a stayer. I really did not expect the race to turn out like that, only sprinting for two furlongs. He’s so good and so versatile, he can get me out of trouble. I’m still floating from the King George, so I have to pinch myself that this is actually happening. To do it again this year is amazing.”

John Gosden said, “The key thing when you’re tracking a horse like Santiago, who is in receipt of 15 pounds, is not to attack two and a half to three furlongs down and turn it into a real slog. Nayef Road ran a blinder again right beside us and I think it was right to wait. When he hits the front now, he thinks that’s it. It was a great performance under that weight. He has a great heart, is very cool and relaxed. Mr Neilsen and I have discussed it and he will run in the Prix Foy next and then be aimed at the Arc.”

Despite his multitude of accomplishments in this sphere, the winner’s prospects of a successful career at stud remains a sticking point for his owner-breeder. “The demand for him commercially isn’t there, as horses who have won just group one over a mile would command more of a stud fee,” Nielsen said. “That’s just the way it is, the trends and the fashion but hopefully it reverts and people will wake up.”

Stradivarius’s dam Private Life (Fr) (Bering {GB}) had no other offerings after him, but her 70,000gns purchase at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mares Sale has reaped rich dividends. Also responsible for the G3 Bavarian Classic and G3 Furstenberg-Rennen scorer Persian Storm (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and the group-placed Rembrandt Van Rijn (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), she hails from the family of the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and descends from Pawneese (Ire). Horse of the Year in England and champion 3-year-old filly in France in 1976 courtesy of her triumphs in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and the G1 Prix de Diane, she is also the ancestress of the brilliant Peintre Celebre.

Back-To-Back Tattersalls Gold Cups For Magical

With racemares like Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), there is a sense of point-and-shoot and Wayne Lordan had little trouble in steering her to a sixth top-level success in Sunday’s G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh. Sent to the front almost from the outset, the 2-9 favourite merely had to repeat her effort when winning the course-and-distance G1 Pretty Polly S. June 28 and she gave generously to issue another beating to over-matched rivals. Kicking off the home turn, she stayed on strongly as expected as stablemate Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) earned second, 2 1/4 lengths behind. He was in turn two lengths ahead of last year’s G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was putting up her best effort of 2020. “It went perfectly–she’s top-class,” Lordan said. “She’s very straightforward and gets into a lovely rhythm–she went by the line not in top gear. She’s a massive mare to ride and has a big, powerful action so with a small field with not a whole lot of pace I opted to keep it simple. I was riding the best horse and she’s uncomplicated with a great attitude. As we know, she can fight when she has to but she hasn’t had to in her last two starts.”

Were it not for Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Magical would have another three group 1s to boast of and in this era of the supermares she stands as one of the trailblazers for her sex. Her career has particularly taken off since September, when she captured the first leg of a notable G1 Irish-English Champion S. double at Leopardstown. Forcing connections into keeping her in training for one more season, she now has four group 1 wins from her last five starts and has justified that decision in no uncertain terms. Now that she is accustomed to making her own running, it could be that she is able to put it up to the Juddmonte sensation the next time their paths cross.

Lordan is of the opinion that the change in tactics is beneficial. “She jumped and she bowled away, she has a big easy action. She made it the last day and zinged along, today she was a little bit more relaxed out there in front,” he added. “I felt if anyone got to me, it would only help me. From the minute you sit on her till you get off, she feels like she has a presence. She’s a high-quality filly and she is definitely up there with the top ones, we know that by her form.”
Aidan O’Brien was at home and told the Racing Post, “She is a great mare. The only reason she is here now is because of the progress she made over the winter and she had progressed again from the Pretty Polly, so we are delighted the lads kept her in training. She might get a little bit of an easy time of it now, but the options would be the [G1] Juddmonte International and the [G1] Irish Champion Stakes. She could wait for the Irish Champion, but we’ll see.”

Magical’s dam Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who was bred by Trevor Stewart, won the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Nassau S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. and is making her own special mark within the Coolmore broodmare band. Covered by Galileo throughout her second career, she has produced the G1 Lockinge S., G1 Fillies Mile and G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Rhododendron (Ire), as well as the G3 International S. scorer Flying the Flag (Ire). Halfway To Heaven is out of Stewart’s triple group-winning sprinter Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who also produced the G3 Summer S. scorer Theann (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire). She has become a star producer in her own right, throwing the GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo S. heroine Photo Call (Ire) from a mating with Galileo and also the G2 Richmond S. scorer Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never). Halfway To Heaven’s daughter Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) raced for her owner-breeder and took the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S.

The third dam Rahaam (Secreto) was responsible for the notable sire Verglas (Ire) and the listed scorer Persian Secret (Fr) (Persian Heights {GB}), who is the ancestress of several classy performers. Her daughters Seba (GB) (Alzao) and Do the Honours (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}) were decent types, with the former capturing the Listed Chesham S. and finishing third in the GI Mother Goose S. and Do the Honours winning the G3 Prix de Meautry. The latter is the second dam of the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Cross Counter (GB) by Galileo’s son Teofilo (Ire). Halfway To Heaven also has a yearling full-brother to Magical.
