Tattersalls Releases Catalogues for October Books 2-4

The catalogues for Books 2, 3 and 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale were released on Tuesday, with a half-brother to 2019 G1 Investec Oaks heroine Star Catcher (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 965) one of the highlights. A total of 816 yearlings will go through the ring in Book 2 from Oct. 12-14, while 602 lots are catalogued for Book 3 from Oct. 15-16. Book 4 features 83 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Oct. 17.

Alumni of Book 2 include champion and MG1SW sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Australian MG1SW Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), G1 Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), scintillating G1 Sussex S. victor Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and progressive grey Way to Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), winner of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Quality is not in short supply among the many offerings, as there are full- or half-siblings to 174 group and listed winners, and 110 yearlings out of group or listed-winning mares. All of the yearlings in Books 3 and 4 are eligible for the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction S.

The Time Test (GB) half-brother to Star Catcher hails from Hascombe and Valiant Stud, and he is also a half-brother to Lemon Drop Kid’s duo of GI Pattison Canadian International S. hero and young sire Cannock Chase, and MGSW Pisco Sour. However, he is not the only sibling to a Classic winner, as Jamie Railton offers lot 856, a son of Australia (GB) out of the three-time winner Honorine (Ire) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). She is the dam of Galileo (Ire)’s Treasure Beach (GB), winner of the G1 Irish Derby.

Also selling are half-siblings to Group 1 winners Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB})-a filly by Muhaarar (GB) as lot 1165 from Hillwood Stud–and Donjuan Triumphant (Ire) (Dream Ahead), Kilcam Park’s lot 985, a son of Invincible Sprit (Ire). Group 1 winner Chachamaidee (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand [GB})’s Sea The Stars (Ire) yearling filly (lot 674) goes through the ring from Houghton Bloodstock. Kodiac (GB), fresh off daughter Campanelle (Ire)’s win in the G1 Darley Prix Morny, is represented by a son (lot 802) out of GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Fraulein (GB) (Acatenango {Ger}) from Lodge Park Stud.

Other established sires the likes of Acclamation (GB), Camelot (GB), Dark Angel (Ire), Exceed And Excel (Aus), Frankel (GB), Invincible Spirit (Ire), Kingman (GB), Lope de Vega (Ire), Nathaniel (Ire), Night of Thunder (Ire), No Nay Never, Pivotal (GB) and Showcasing (GB) have yearlings in the catalogues.

Leading first-season sire Mehmas (Ire), who already has four black-type winners, is represented by 10 yearlings in Book 2, and there are 18 first-crop sires represented, among them Aclaim (Ire), Caravaggio, Churchill (Ire), Decorated Knight (GB), Galileo Gold (GB), Highland Reel (Ire), Mondialiste (Ire), National Defense (GB), Postponed (Ire), Profitable (Ire), Ribchester (Ire) and Ulysses (Ire). Some of the French stallions represented number Le Havre (Ire), Shalaa (Ire) and Siyouni (Fr), while Wootton Bassett (GB), who was recently relocated to Ireland, has seven. The latter’s champion son Almanzor (Fr) has an equal number. American sires Air Force Blue, Flintshire (GB), Kitten’s Joy, and Nyquist also have yearlings slated to sell.

In 2019, 620 yearlings grossed 48,499,000gns, with an average of 78,224gns and a median of 55,500gns in Book 2. The top price of 1,050,000gns was paid by Shadwell for a daughter of Dark Angel (Ire) out of a daughter of blue hen MGSW Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

“Both the highest rated colt in Europe, Mohaather and the highest rated sprinter in Europe, Battaash, were purchased at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and Book 3 has also had another outstanding year demonstrating the consistent quality to be found in the second week of the October Yearling Sales at Park Paddocks,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “Huge demand for places in our yearling sales has ensured catalogues of real depth and quality catering to buyers at all levels of the market from throughout the world.”

The catalogs for Books 2, 3, and 4 of the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale are online now and can be viewed at www.tattersalls.com.

Book 2 features 816 yearlings and will take place Monday, Oct. 12 – Wednesday, Oct. 14, Book 3 has 602 lots cataloged and will take place Thursday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 16, while Book 4 has a further 83 yearlings selling on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 17.

This year's October Book 2 global stars Addeybb, Battaash, Fifty Stars, Mohaater, and Way to Paris, as well as impressive Group 2 winning two year old Minzaall, have all provided the best possible advertisements for Europe's largest yearling sale and the 2020 catalog features own or half-brothers and sisters to an impressive 174 group and listed winners including the Time Test half-brother to last year's Irish Oaks winner Star Catcher, the Australia three-parts brother to Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach and half-siblings to 2018 and 2019 Group 1 winners Accidental Agent and Donjuan Triumphant. In addition there are 110 sons and daughters of group and listed winning mares cataloged, including the Sea the Stars filly out of Group 1 Matron Stakes winner Chachamaidee, the Kodiac colt out of the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes winner Fraulein and the Aclaim filly out of smart Argentine racemare Chibola, dam of this year's Group 2 Coventry Stakes winner Nando Parrado.

The sires index makes equally impressive reading with 21 of the current top 25 sires in Britain and Ireland all well represented including Acclamation, Australia, Camelot, Dark Angel, Exceed and Excel, Frankel, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Kodiac, Lope de Vega, Nathanial, Night of Thunder, No Nay Never, Pivotal, Sea the Stars, and Showcasing.

The current leading first season sire Mehmas, who already has four individual group/listed winners to his name, has ten yearlings catalogued and there are 18 first crop sires represented including classic and Group 1 winners Aclaim, Caravaggio, Churchill, Decorated Knight, Galileo Gold, Highland Reel, Mondialiste, National Defense, Postponed, Profitable, Ribchester, and Ulysses.

Overseas-based sires have always added an extra dimension to Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale and top French based sires Dabirsim, Le Havre, Shalaa, Siyouni, and Wootton Bassett have 38 yearlings cataloged between them, with an additional seven by exciting French based first crop sire Almanzor. U.S.-based sires Air Force Blue, Flintshire, Kitten's Joy, and Nyquist are also well represented.

Book 3 of the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which follows immediately after Book 2, takes place Thursday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 16, and numbers 602 lots. Book 4 comprises an additional 83 lots and will take place on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 17.

All of the yearlings in Books 3 and 4 of the October Yearling Sale are eligible for the ever-popular £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes and the catalogs include yearlings by current top 30 sires Acclamation, Australia, Camelot, Dark Angel, Exceed and Excel, Invincible Spirit, Kodiac, Mastercraftsman, Mayson, Nathaniel, Night of Thunder, Oasis Dream, Sea the Moon, Sea the Stars, Showcasing, Teofilo, and Zoffany.

Olympic Glory’s Etonian Pounces For Solario Triumph

Julie Wood’s Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) caused a 28-1 shock when prevailing by 3 1/4 lengths at Sandown in his only prior start and the form of that seven-furlong maiden contest received a hefty boost when runner-up One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) took the opening heat on the Esher track’s Sunday card. He was sent postward at considerably shorter odds for the day’s feature G3 Betway Solario S., over the same seven-furlong strip, and pounced late to ensure his perfect record remained intact. Etonian sought and found cover in sixth after an alert getaway from the outside gate. Making eyecatching headway on the bridle out wide in the straight, the 15-8 favourite was shaken up to seize control from the pacesetting Apollo One (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) with 100 yards remaining and kept on strongly from there to comfortably hold the late rally of King Vega (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Apollo One finished a half-length adrift in third.

“He’s a horse that initially stood out, in the way he moved, but he got a bit bored in his work and was just doing his bit at home,” said Richard Hannon. “I’d given him a lot of entries and we had to run him sooner or later so we came here for his debut, but I don’t know how we allowed him to start at such long odds. He won very well that day, he was very professional in everything he did today and always looked like he was going better than all of them. He wasn’t particularly fond of that ground, but I’d have been disappointed if he didn’t win. It’s lovely for [owner] Julie Wood to have a good one as it’s been a fair while in between good horses for her.” Looking to both long-term and short-term targets, the trainer added, “I think he’s a [G1 2000] Guineas horse for next year and maybe a [G1] Vertem Futurity horse this year. He’ll have another one or two runs [this year] and we could look at the [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere, a race his sire won, and the [G1] Dewhurst, but it all depends on what Julie wants to do.”

Etonian is the latest of three foals and lone winner produced by an unraced daughter of G3 Prix de Flore runner-up Wingspan (Silver Hawk), herself kin to MGSW GII Hall of Fame S. victor Interactif (Broken Vow) and stakes-winning GIII WinStar Distaff H. third Stretching (Red Ransom). Etonian’s fourth dam Pennant Champion (Mr. Prospector), herself a daughter of unbeaten MGISW US champion Personal Ensign (Private Account), is a full-sister to GI Jockey Club Gold Cup-winning sire Miner’s Mark and GI Oaklawn H.-winning sire Traditionally. She is also a half-sister to MGISW distaffer My Flag (Easy Goer), who in turn produced MGISW US champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat).

Kodiac’s Campanelle Dominates Morny Rivals

Sent postward as the 17-10 favourite for Sunday’s G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville, Stonestreet Stables’ Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) added lustre to a banner season for Tally-Ho Stud with a dominant performance in her first outing beyond the five-furlong trip. She had opened up with an impressive 3 1/2-length score over five in her May 31 unveiling at Gulfstream Park, stepping up to garner Royal Ascot’s June 20 G2 Queen Mary dash on black-type bow in her only other start, and the April-foaled bay went straight to the head of affairs in this straight six-furlong test. Campanelle was comfortable in front for the most part, but a battle looked in store when rivals stacked up in behind as she came under pressure approaching the final furlong. However, any concerns about stretching out to six on softened ground were quickly dismissed as she found more than enough under Frankie Dettori’s urgings inside the final furlong to comfortably hold the vain bids of G2 Coventry S. victor Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) and Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by two lengths and a neck, respectively, and remain undefeated.
