Lope de Vega Filly Romps to Rising Stardom

Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) went straight to the lead and never looked back, coasting home to become the newest ‘TDN Rising Star’ on opening day of Churchill Downs’ abbreviated GI Kentucky Derby meet. Dispatched as the 9-5 second-choice in this career bow, the 280,000gns TATOCT purchase seized the early advantage, coasting along through opening splits of :24.27 and :48.21. Turning for home in front, the bay sailed clear with ease under a hand ride from Florent Geroux to win by five lengths. Gam’s Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) was best of the rest in second.

The filly was part of a European venture put together by BSW/Crow Bloodstock’s Brad Weisbord and Liz Crow. She was one of nine fillies purchased for this group of five American owners.

“We put together a venture last year to go over to Tattersalls to buy yearling fillies,” Weisbord said. “The thought process was that 50% of our high-dollar races were on turf and [Europe] has the best pedigrees on turf, so why try to play it with the American pedigrees when we can get the European pedigrees. The pioneers were Chad Brown, Seth Klarman and Peter Brant in the fact that they already had a champion out of there and it was working. So, we kind of played copy cat in a way. We bought nine fillies and we dispersed them amongst four different trainers. This was our ventures third runner and first winner. The last month, she trained like the best one of the first five we sent out. She trained like a special filly the last three or four weeks, but all on the dirt. We didn’t know what she would do on the turf, but she is bred for it. She ran to our expectations and I would like to give the five owners credit for putting trust in our venture.”

“We went over with the idea to buy nine or 10 horses and she was the most expensive filly we bought,” said Crow, who picked out the filly at Tattersalls. “She just had a really American look to her. She had a really good hind leg, a really strong forearm and good muscling. She looked like she could train really well on the dirt here and she has been breezing very well on the dirt every week, so we were expecting a big effort out of her.”

Matauri Pearl–a half-sister to GSW & MGISP Wekeela (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire})–has a yearling filly by Sea the Stars (Ire) and produced a Lope de Vega colt this year.

Walkinthesand Tops Inaugural Tattersalls August Sale

The inaugural Tattersalls August Sale finished with a flourish with a top price of 220,000 guineas (US$304,980) and five lots selling for 100,000 guineas (US$138,627) or more. Once again, the clearance rate was in the high nineties, with the final session's turnover exceeding 3 million guineas (US$4,158,051), taking the three-day total to more than 8 million guineas (US$11,088,138).

The leading buyer for the sale was Voute Sales who purchased four lots for 650,000 guineas (US$900,888) on behalf of Saudi Arabian operation Najd Stud.

Leading the way was the four-year-old Walkinthesand who was knocked down to Voute for 220,000 guineas (US$304,980) after a spirited online bidding duel. Onsite bidders included Stuart Boman who made a strong play to secure the Richard Hannon trained son of Footstepsinthesand but it was Voute who was successful for the East Everleigh consigned colt.

Walkinthesand was offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 113. Following the purchase, Voute commented;

“They fit the profile and have all been bought for a new stud company called Najd Stud Ltd, which is based in Riyadh. They will ship immediately, as soon as the next flight is available.”

Expanding on the purchase plans, Voute said: “They have been bought for King's Cup races and series. The Saudi Cup day needs very good international horses, not that these aren't good horses, and they might develop into that if they act on the surface.”

Voute, who did all his bidding online, also secured the 3-year-old colt To Nathaniel for 185,000 guineas (US$256,424) on behalf of the same owners. The son of Nathaniel was consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of John Gosden's Clarehaven Stables and offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 95.

Explaining the process ahead of the live internet bidding, Voute said: “We vetted a whole slew of them and then I came up to Tattersalls yesterday, looked at all the horses who made the short, short list.

“And we said we'd do it on the internet. It was very easy to do, I registered at the beginning of the week, it has been great. There was no need to be up there today.”

When asked if he felt he missed out anything by not being in the sales ring, he added: “For form horses it is perhaps slightly different, it is there for everyone to see – other than taking a lame step in the ring prior, but we had a vet there to cover that eventuality, the same vet who has vetted them all.”

At the conclusion of the inaugural Tattersalls August Sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“Another post-COVID Tattersalls sale with a clearance rate around the 90 percent mark has to be regarded as a success. We made the observation after the recent Tattersalls July Sale that this sort of clearance rate would be noteworthy under normal circumstances, but in the face of the multiple challenges that everyone currently faces these sort of returns are little short of miraculous.

“From the Tattersalls perspective, we salute all those who have supported this new fixture and made it such a success. Vendors, purchasers, vets, farriers, stable staff, the list is endless and everyone, whatever their role, has worked incredibly hard to ensure the smooth running not only of this week's August Sale, but of all our recent sales.

“In addition to the extraordinary clearance rate, the other notable feature of the August Sale has been the huge impact of our recently introduced live internet bidding facility, which is particularly well-suited to sales of this nature. From start to finish there has been sustained internet bidding from throughout the world at all levels of the market and it has been fantastic to see this technology being so quickly and widely embraced. It certainly bodes well for the forthcoming sales at Park Paddocks and we will continue to ensure that the platform is as simple and easy to use as possible.

“Naturally there has been plenty of discussion about whether this new August Sale will become a more permanent Tattersalls fixture and the success of this week has certainly demonstrated enthusiasm from vendors and purchasers alike. In a normal year there would be a major yearling sale taking place this week, but we will see how the rest of the Tattersalls sales season unfolds, have a look at the calendar and assess how best to proceed once we have a clearer picture.”

Swindler Tops Second Session Of Tattersalls August Sale

Trade continued in strong fashion at the inaugural Tattersalls August Sale with international participation and live internet bidding both featuring strongly on the second day. The top four lots were bought by buyers from Bahrain, Qatar, Hong Kong and the U.S., with two of the four falling to internet bids. The clearance rate was a spectacular 95 percent.

The high-class sprinter Swindler topped the second day of the Tattersalls August Sale after Oliver St Lawrence saw off the attentions of underbidder Steven Hillen to secure the gelding on behalf of Fawzi Nass for 150,000 guineas (US$206,930).

“He is to go to Bahrain, that will be his base,” commented Nass. “He is a very talented horse; he goes on fast ground and can sit off the pace. There might be a race for him on our International Day but he could make up to be good enough to go to Dubai or Saudi.”

The 97-rated Swindler is a dual winner from the family of French 2,000 Guineas winner Make Believe and was fourth last time out in the Stewards' Cup for trainer Ed Walker and owner breeder Bjorn Nielsen.

U.K.-based agent Jamie Lloyd secured the highly rated three-year-old Poet's Voice colt Whisper Not for 90,000 guineas (US$124,158) from the draft of Richard Hannon's East Everleigh Stables.

“He is for Chris Dunn for whom we bought Lady Prancealot, so he will be going to the U.S.,” said Lloyd. “This horse has got a lot of pace and is lightly raced – Richard Hannon said there is some more improvement to come. We have not finalized plans in the U.S. yet – West Coast or East Coast, probably west – but he will come back to the farm first.”

The colt has won his last two starts and was offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 94p, and Lloyd added: “He won that first race by 20l on a slow track at Pontefract and then won again on the faster track at Lingfield. I think he could drop back to a mile in the U.S.”

Owned in training at East Everleigh by owner Michael Pescod, the colt was bought by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 20,000 euros (US$23,647) at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale in 2018.

The Tattersalls August Sale continues at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26 with the third and final session.
