Tattersalls To Stage February Sale As Live Virtual Sale

Owing to the increasingly stringent lockdown measures in place in Britain and Ireland, Tattersalls will be staging the forthcoming February Sale exclusively as a live virtual sale taking place on the scheduled dates of Thursday, Feb. 4 and Friday, Feb. 5 with no horses, vendors or purchasers on site. Tattersalls will also hold an additional conventional fixture at its Park Paddocks base in Newmarket on Wednesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 1st.

All bidding at the live virtual February Sale will take place either online through the well – established Tattersalls live internet bidding platform or telephone bidding through members of the Tattersalls team.

Announcing the change of format to Europe's premier midwinter sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The decision to stage the Tattersalls February Sale in a live virtual format has been taken in the best interests of all concerned and reflects our commitment to providing the best possible working environment for participants at all of our sales, in whatever capacity they may be attending. The decision also recognizes the increased difficulties surrounding domestic and international travel and it was felt that the prudent option was to stage the February Sale in a manner which allows vendors and purchasers alike to participate with confidence and in full compliance with prevailing rules and regulations. Our live internet bidding platform proved to hugely popular with buyers throughout last year, particularly at mixed sales similar to the February Sale, and we are confident that this live virtual format is the best option under the current difficult circumstances which we all continue to endure. In addition to promoting the February Sale to as many prospective buyers as possible our bloodstock sales team will liaise with vendors with regard to the requirements of the live virtual sale model.”

Details of the revised Tattersalls February sale format are as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 4 – Friday, Feb. 5, sale starting at 10 a.m. both days.

* All lots to be offered live as cataloged but without being present at Tattersalls Park Paddocks.
* No horses, vendors or purchasers will be present at Tattersalls Park Paddocks.
* All bidding to be conducted live to auctioneers through the Tattersalls live internet bidding platform or telephone bidding via Tattersalls personnel.
* The Tattersalls February Sale catalog can be viewed online at www.tattersalls.com and on the Equineline iPad App.
* All buyers must register for online or telephone bidding prior to the February Sale. Full details can be found at www.tattersalls.com.

Commenting on the additional Tattersalls mixed sale planned for March 31 and April 1, Edmond Mahony added;

“We already have an Ascot fixture scheduled for April 1 which almost certainly will have to be relocated to Newmarket and we felt it best to offer an extra day in recognition of the changes we have had to make to the forthcoming Tattersalls February Sale. As ever our priority is to respond to the requirements of all of our clients as best we can while continuing to provide a safe and vibrant market place.”

Tattersalls Unveils February Catalogue

Tattersalls has catalogued 497 horses for its two-day February Sale, which takes place at Park Paddocks on Feb. 4 and 5.

The largest consignment comes from The Castlebridge Consignment, which fields 47 including the 92-rated 4-year-old filly Dancing Feet (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) (lot 460), a three-time winner in 2020 for Archie Watson; the 3-year-old filly Coloratura Soprano (Ity) (Golden Horn {GB}), a half-sister to last year’s G2 Oaks d’Italia scorer Auyantepui (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 162); and Aubade (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 163), an unraced 3-year-old half-sister to three stakes winners from the family of the outstanding producer Halfway To Heaven (GB) (Pivotal {GB}).

Godolphin, Juddmonte and Shadwell have 49 horses catalogued between them. Juddmonte’s drafts always draw plenty of attention and this time around it includes At Ease (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 385), a winning 4-year-old daughter of dual Grade I winner Jostle (Brocco), who has also produced two stakes winners; and Ludisia (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 389), a 3-year-old daughter of the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner African Rose (GB) (Observatory) and therefore a full-sister to G3 Princess Margaret S. winner Fair Eva (GB) and from the family of Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

Other standout fillies in the catalogue include Mystify Me (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) (lot 311), a daughter of the stakes-winning Fig Roll (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and half-sister to G3 Prix d’Arenberg scorer Al Raya (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}); Coniger (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) (lot 363), a 3-year-old daughter of G2 Falmouth S. winner Macadamia (Ire) (Classic Cliche {Ire}) and half-sister to stakes winners Lovely Pass (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) and Spirit Raiser (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}); and Sesame Birah (Ire) (Gregorian {Ire}) (lot 138), a 4-year-old filly who was placed in the Listed Denford S.

The catalogue also boasts some quality colts and geldings in training, including the Timeform 100-rated Bluebeard’s Castle (War Front) (lot 202), who has won twice over 2000 and 2400 metres for Joseph O’Brien; Affwonn (Ire) (Free Eagle {Ire}) (lot 425), who has won his only start for Roger Varian and is Timeform rated 90p; and Alexej (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) (lot 454), a winner and three times placed from four runs for trainer John Gosden who is out of the Group 3-winning Aquatinta (Ger) (Samum {Ger}).

The catalogue also includes yearlings and mares in foal.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Tattersalls February Sale continues to be a consistent source of high-quality breeding stock and horses in training with the dam of last year’s G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge-winning 2-year-old New Mandate being a prime example. Along with the 2-year-olds and yearlings on offer, this year’s February Sale looks certain to appeal to the usual diverse mix of domestic and international buyers who have made the Tattersalls February Sale Europe’s premier midwinter fixture. Our live internet and telephone bidding facilities will again be available for buyers unable to attend in person and we will continue to explore every possible avenue for buyers to participate at all of our sales despite the prevailing challenges.”

Letters to the Editor: Despite COVID, British Racing’s Success

There is much to be negative about with British racing but occasionally we should acknowledge and celebrate success. During this terrible year of Covid, racing’s rulers should be celebrated for what they have achieved and what has been saved.

Our great sport was back behind closed doors and handled the health implications effectively. The stud season took place with mares covered and the business uninterrupted.

The icing on the cake must surely be the remarkable resilience of the Tattersalls sales which ran in Newmarket on their original dates. To the best of our knowledge the December Sales ran without any outbreak of covid amongst the participants.

We should applaud Tattersalls for going the extra mile, the Maktoum family for their support, Government for recognising our importance as an international business as well as a great sport, but most of all our hard-working staff who kept the show on the road.

Well done ITV on spreading the message and pleasures of British Horse Racing. Let us hope that in 2021 the BHA can finally persuade Government that a properly funded industry can be for the benefit of all including bookmakers and the taxpayer.

Yours sincerely,

The Hon Peter Stanley      &      Simon Marsh
Manager, New England Stud    General Manager, Watership Down & Kiltinan Castle Studs
