Australia’s Broome Extends Tally In the Mooresbridge

Providing Aidan O'Brien with a 12th renewal of The Curragh's G2 Coolmore Sottsass Irish EBF Mooresbridge S. on Monday, Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) continued his own success story with a third black-type win in 2021. Having taken the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28 and the Apr. 17 G3 Alleged S. over this track and 10-furlong trip, the 4-9 favourite was forwardly placed in second by Ryan Moore and ridden to take command approaching the last two furlongs. Pressed by Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) from there, he kept finding to earn a two-length success, with the returning G1 Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) 4 1/2 lengths away in third.

While he is not one of Ballydoyle's flashiest stars, Broome is one of those admirable back-up horses that the major stables need and is very strong at this level. “He's a lovely horse and he's come back very well this year,” Ryan Moore said. “There is plenty left in there and he kind of played with them to be honest. He's unbeaten at ten, but I do think he'll get further. He's only had a couple of goes at group 1 company and has been fourth on two occasions, so he's entitled to have another go.”

Broome is out of the speedy Listed National S. scorer and G3 Princess Margaret S. and GIII Appalachian S.-placed Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose dam is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB). She in turn produced the GII Lake Placid H. scorer Spotlight (GB) (Dr Fong), herself responsible for the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and for the dam of last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). Dust Dancer is also the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S.-winning Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) who posthumously had his first Classic winner on Sunday and his G2 Futurity S.-winning and G1 Irish Derby-placed half-brother Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). This is also the family of the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), her G2 Premio Lydia Tesio-winning daughter Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) and her daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) who took the GIII Hillsborough S. and was runner-up in G1 Nassau S. Sweepstake's as-yet unnamed 2-year-old is a full-brother to Broome, while she also has a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire).

Frankel Colt Epsom Bound After Newmarket Demolition

Shadwell's Mohaafeth (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was Saturday's most visually impressive winner as he took apart the Listed Newmarket S. to earn a tilt at the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby. Anchored in last early, the 2-1 second favourite who had won over the same course and distance in a handicap at the Craven meeting Apr. 14 cruised to the front passing two out and was not asked a single question from there as he coasted to a five-length success from the 4-5 market-leader Secret Protector (War Front). “He has clearly improved from his last run here and gave me a good feel,” jockey Jim Crowley said. “Today he was mentally better–he was shouting at the other horses last time and on his toes, but he was much more of a man today. We were thinking about Royal Ascot before today, but we might have to set our sights a little bit higher than that now. He stays that trip very well and has a good turn of foot, so hopefully he'll get a mile and a half. He was a very nice surprise today.”

William Haggas was refusing to get carried away afterwards, but was clearly enamoured with the performance. “I was pleased with the way he won his handicap and although I thought this race fell apart he was still very impressive and looked good to me,” he said. “Only two runs ago, he won what was not a great race at Lingfield. This may turn out not to be a great performance–it was the same two years ago with the filly Maqsad (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the Pretty Polly at this meeting. She looked a star then and never won again. The most pressing option is the Derby and I've no idea whether he'll stay, but he relaxes well. The trials are all too close and I don't want to take a backward step, so I suspect we'll have a go as it's our biggest race. I have loved this horse ever since he was a yearling–I asked Sheikh Hamdan to see him and told him 'I think this is a Derby horse sir' and he said 'I think he might be slower than that, more of an Ascot Gold Cup horse!' It's so sad that he is not here to see him, as he would have been as excited as we are.”

The Normandie Stud-bred dam was an unbeaten TDN Rising Star in 2015 whose two starts included the Listed Lyric S. She is one of three black-type winners out of the Listed Lupe S. winner and G2 Lowther S. runner-up Foodbroker Fancy (Ire) (Halling) alongside the GIII Long Island H. winner Dalvina (GB) (Grand Lodge) and Soft Centre (GB) (Zafonic) who emulated her dam's success in the Lupe. Dalvina is in turn the dam of the dual listed scorer and G2 Sandown Classic runner-up Dal Harraild (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), while Soft Centre went on to produce the G1 Nassau S. heroine Sultanina (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). Also connected to the G3 Sandown Sprint S. winner and G1 Nunthorpe S.-placed Extortionist (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), French Dressing also has the unraced 2-year-old colt French Toast (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) named French Mistress (GB).

Australia’s Sir Ron Priestley Dominates the Jockey Club

He was missing throughout all of last season, but Paul Dean's Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) made certain he is front and centre this year after dominating Saturday's G2 Betfair Exchange Jockey Club S. at Newmarket. Returning for the first time since finishing second in the 2019 G1 St Leger when winning Nottingham's Listed Further Flight S. over 14 furlongs Apr. 7, the 15-8 joint-favourite was always in his element out in the clear much as this race's last winner Communique (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) had been in 2019. A true Mark Johnston special, the 5-year-old kept replying to Franny Norton's demands as the returning Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) ran away from the whip which he had shown a tendency to do on occasion last term. At the line, there was a 2 1/2-length margin between the reinvented winner and one of last year's leading members of the Classic generation. “In a small field on a track like this there were going to be no excuses and we were going to come out of here either knowing he wasn't good enough at this trip and we were going to have to go back to Plan A of being a stayer, or have the result we have had,” Charlie Johnston explained. “The [G2] Yorkshire Cup and the [G2] Hardwicke will be the next two places, I'd have thought.”

Sir Ron Priestley was proving one of this year's surprise packages with this display, as the pick of his 2019 form also included a success over a mile and three quarters in Goodwood's G3 March S. His pace from the front here justified the recent rethink at Kingsley House Stables concerning his race program. As a half-brother to the stable's live G1 Gold Cup hope Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who is now the winner of the G1 Prix Royal-Oak and G2 Dubai Gold Cup, he may have made matters less complicated for connections after Saturday. “Given what he did as a three-year-old and largely because of who his brother is, we spent most of the winter thinking he was going to be a Cup horse this year,” the trainer's son and assistant added. “The Further Flight was a stepping-stone to the Yorkshire Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup, but the way he travelled and picked up there made us think a little bit and off the back of that we made the entry here and in the [June 19] Hardwicke at Royal Ascot. Today was a great opportunity to find out what we should be aiming for for the rest of the year. He's not in the [G1] Coronation Cup, which is a slight frustration in hindsight, but this result means that certainly in the short-term he can stay away from his brother. I wouldn't rule them out meeting at Goodwood further down the line.”

The dam is the triple listed-placed Reckoning (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who as well as the aforementioned high-achieving Subjectivist also produced this stable's 2020 G2 Rockfel S. third Alba Rose (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}). She is kin to the GIII My Charmer H. runner-up Hope Cross (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who fittingly on a day like this hails from one of Jim Bolger's better families. It includes the G1 Gran Criterium winner and G1 Irish Derby runner-up Sholokhov (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the Irish Derby and G1 Coronation Cup hero Soldier of Fortune (Ire) (Galileo {Ire) and the G1 Dewhurst S. winner Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway) as well as the G1 Moyglare Stud S. scorer Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy). Reckoning's as-yet unnamed 2-year-old
filly is by Ulysses (Ire), while she also has a yearling colt by Roaring Lion.

Third-Highest Turnover At Strong Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale

The Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale concluded with the third-highest turnover in the sale's history with 150 2-year-olds changing hands for just short of 4.5 million guineas, an average of almost 30,000 guineas, a median of 24,500 guineas and a clearance rate of 82 percent. The Guineas Horses in Training Sale had earlier seen 24 horses in training exchange hands for 262,500 guineas.

Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown secured the top-priced lot of the Guineas Breeze Up Sale when going to 135,000 guineas to land the son of the first crop sire and multiple Group 1 winner Postponed. The colt is out of the Malibu Moon mare Micalea's Moon, a half-sister to the dam of Champion 2-year-old and exciting stallion No Nay Never. Brown secured the colt despite the persistence of underbidder Anthony Bromley, stood alongside trainer Alan King.

“He is for my resale syndicate Never Say Die, and will be trained by David Simcock,” said Brown. “A client bred Postponed so I have followed him all the way through and I am giving him a big chance.

“I don't see this horse running until August or September, he is a horse for the future. I just thought he is a smashing horse.”

Explaining the ownership syndicate, Brown said: “The syndicate is all about resale. We aim to sell as 3-year-olds. There are great people involved in the syndicate and I think they will be really excited with this horse.”

Of the colt's breeze, Brown enthused: “He did a cracking breeze. He just showed a great action, it wasn't a speedy breeze but it was the style he did it in, he has a good attitude.”

The sale represented a great success for Glending Stables' Roderick Kavanagh, with the colt having been purchased at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for just 20,000 guineas.

“He was bought by my Dad (Peter Kavanagh) and Michael Downey, and we've always really liked him,” recalled Kavanagh. “He's a racehorse and he was such a good pull-out outside the boxes. He did an impressive breeze for his size and the date of birth he has, and he really fills the eye. He was very popular and he never let us down from start to finish.”

He added of the son of Postponed: “He is a lovely horse and all the agents were on him, all the big dogs as you'd expect. I think there were five or six bidders on him.”

The Mehmas colt out of the Milk It Mick mare Cheworee for was the second lot to sell for a six-figure value when knocked down to David Redvers for 105,000 guineas on behalf of Sheikh Fahad.

The colt's sire, who stands at Tally Ho Stud, has enjoyed a sensational start to his stud career and the successful purchaser David Redvers said of his plans: “He will be trained in Newmarket, Sheikh Fahad [who lives in Newmarket] wants to see him trained locally and close by. The horse did a very good time, he is by a very good sire and he is a lovely model, it is a great touch for the vendor.”

The vendor was Irish-based National Hunt jockey Ian McCarthy who owned him with two friends, the trio purchasing him as a foal for €3,000 as a yearling pinhook prospect but that plan failed to come to fruition.

“Gerry McCormack pinhooked him as a foal for €3,000, it is lucky enough now that he was not sold as a yearling!” smiled McCarthy. “I prepped him for us, he has been very straightforward. As time went on he just developed, he got much stronger and through the last eight weeks he has really turned a corner – he takes his work well.”

“He is a horse who has had a great preparation and we've liked him all along,” continued McCarthy. “We've had plenty of interest in the last couple of days, he did a lovely breeze ridden by Micky Cleere and he is by the right sire, isn't he?”

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“A median bettered only once this decade at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale combined with an average and turnover which both compare favorably with the 2019 and 2020 renewals are all positives to take from today's sale, as has been the consistent domestic demand at all levels of the market. Similarly, while not quite matching the unprecedented levels at the recent Craven Breeze Up Sale, the clearance rate has also held up well, especially considering a significantly larger catalogue than usual and the disruption to overseas participation owing to the current widespread travel restrictions.

“We can also reflect on a Guineas Breeze Up Sale which has produced numerous impressive pinhooking triumphs, as ever reflecting the expertise of the consignors, and another sale which has underlined the importance of the Tattersalls live internet bidding platform which has yet again proved to be invaluable, particularly for overseas buyers unable to attend the sale. COVID continues to test us all, but once more we have experienced trade of remarkable resilience and a collective determination from all involved to explore every avenue to provide as vibrant a market as possible in the face of considerable obstacles.”
