Hampton Court Compensation For Frankel’s Mohaafeth

Denied a tilt at the G1 Epsom Derby due to the eve-of-race downpour, Shadwell's Mohaafeth (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) had luck on his side on Thursday and after the overnight thunderstorm had bypassed Ascot duly showed his wares in the G3 Hampton Court S. Anchored towards the back early by Jim Crowley, the 11-8 favourite had to come five-wide on the home bend but had the engine to get to the front passing two out as Roman Empire (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) stuck close by. Drifting away from the whip and across that Ballydoyle rival soon after, the William Haggas-trained chestnut who had stunned in the May 1 Listed Newmarket S. over this 10-furlong trip had to dig deeper this time. Making the margin 1 3/4 lengths at the line, he was allowed to keep the race after an inquiry with Roman Empire in turn a head in front of Secret Protector (War Front) who had been five lengths behind the winner in the Newmarket. “No one will ever know whether we made the right decision on Derby day, but the mile-and-a-half trip on that ground would have been tough,” Haggas said. “He wasn't exactly powering away today and maybe that's his trip or shorter. He doesn't look a stayer physically and Jim [Crowley] said coming in 'you were absolutely right not to run in the Derby', so I felt a bit better for that.”

Spared the gruelling nature of a disappointment in the Derby, Mohaafeth still boasts the profile of a colt going places and while this was his first proper test he was able to employ his acceleration to get himself out of trouble. This was not as smooth as his two prior performances at Newmarket, but the chestnut now has experience of a fight and Haggas was keen to stress it was all about the future. “He's got a nice turn of foot and on quick ground will continue to be quite dangerous,” he continued. “We are in no rush with him–he's got the chance of being a top horse and he has plenty of mileage in him. He's proven he's a good horse and now he's got to get up to group 2 and group 1 level to prove he's a very good horse. He's in the [July 3 G1] Eclipse [at Sandown], but it depends on where we get that ground. I've never made a secret of the fact that he wants it fast, as he has a daisy-cutting action. Missing the Derby was sad, as it's a huge race but I was always concerned about the trip and then when it rained it became, for me, an easier decision not to run him. I think if he's going to go one way, he'll go shorter not longer.”

“I think it probably didn't go his way today,” Haggas added. “Jim was concerned about the horse of Roger Varian's who was up the front and he was quite far behind and he said, by his own admission, he'd gone a bit early. The horse kept going, that's the main thing, and he did run across the track a bit but he's probably used up a lot of petrol getting there.”

The Normandie Stud-bred dam French Dressing (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was an unbeaten TDN Rising Star in 2015 whose two starts included the Listed Lyric S. She is one of three black-type winners out of the Listed Lupe S. winner and G2 Sun Chariot S. runner-up Foodbroker Fancy (Ire) (Halling) alongside the GIII Long Island H. winner Dalvina (GB) (Grand Lodge) and Soft Centre (GB) (Zafonic) who emulated her dam's success in the Lupe. Dalvina, who was also third in the G2 Ribblesdale S. at this meeting, went on to produce the dual listed scorer and G2 Sandown Classic runner-up Dal Harraild (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), while Soft Centre was responsible for the G1 Nassau S. and G3 Pinnacle S. heroine Sultanina (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) as well as Coconut Creme (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who was runner-up in the re-named Lupe, the Listed Height of Fashion S. Also connected to the G3 Sandown Sprint S. and Listed Windsor Castle S. winner and G1 Nunthorpe S.-placed Extortionist (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), French Dressing also has the unraced 2-year-old colt French Toast (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) named French Mistress (GB).

First Black-Type Winner For Ardad As Perfect Power Wins the Norfolk

Impressive both visually and on the clock when off the mark over this five-furlong trip at Hamilton eight days previously, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) delivered the same acceleration to take Thursday's G2 Norfolk S. and provide his Overbury Stud-based first-season sire with a first black-type winner. Drawn in 10 and forced to come up the middle which had looked unfavourable over the first two days, the Richard Fahey-trained £110,000 Goffs UK Breeze Up graduate was outpaced and towards rear at halfway in this GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint qualifier. As he had against lesser company in Scotland the week before, the 14-1 shot turned on the afterburners to arrive into contention towards the stand's side as the line neared. With Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) keeping all on the far side at bay throughout, it was Perfect Power who swooped in the final stride to crown Paul Hanagan's comeback from serious injury on the other part of the track. The judge was needed with the front two split wide apart and it was officially a head that separated them, with just a nose back to the stand's-rail runner Project Dante (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in third. In a tight finale, the 5-1 favourite Cadamosto (Ire) (No Nay Never) was just half a length away in fourth coming up the far rail. “Beautiful,” said Hanagan, who had recently completed his convalescence having fractured his T3, T4 and T6 in a fall last February. “I don't usually get emotional, but I'm lucky to be here at all after the accident. It's been a very character-building few months, but I had the will to get back and I appreciate I got a second chance to take with both hands. This is what it's all about–it's just an amazing feeling.”

Third on debut over this trip behind the James Tate-trained Royal Aclaim (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) in a May 25 Newcastle novice that had already started to work out well, Perfect Power may not have beaten any stars at Hamilton but the manner of his performance stayed with all who witnessed it. Running similarly in this race which was stripped of one of its more-fancied runners as the Clive Cox-trained Instinctive Move (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) reared in the stalls, he was a touch stranded up the centre but at least had Lucci (Not This Time) to aim at dead ahead. That Ward runner only gave best in the last 50 yards as Perfect Power and Project Dante swamped him, while on the far side it was Go Bears Go and Cadamosto who had it between them in a thrilling finale.

“They went quite hard and I had to sit and suffer on him, but I'm glad I did as he didn't half power home and run through the line,” Hanagan added. “As a horse, you couldn't get better and that's probably what got him beat first time–we were all expecting him to win, but he got stage fright. He'd come out of that so well and Hamilton brought him on again. He's going the right way.” Richard Fahey added, “It was a good race for me to watch, as we had three runners in it with two involved in the finish [including the sixth-placed Khunan (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}). I thought we'd got beat, but I'm just delighted for the whole team at Musley Bank, it's a great result for us all and I'm delighted for Sheikh Rashid, he's supported us the last two or three years now and to get him a Royal Ascot winner is fantastic, he's a real nice man. He was slowly away at Newcastle and got beat because of it, so it was a good decision to go to Hamilton a week ago. I always think it's tough for a once-raced two-year-old, it takes a good one to do it so it probably helped us today.”

Perfect Power, who was emulating the Royal Ascot success of Ardad who took the Listed Windsor Castle S. in 2016, is the first foal out of a granddaughter of Saga D'Ouilly (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) who is in turn a full-sister to the Arc hero Sagamix (Fr). She is also a half to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) and to Shastye (Ire) (Danehill), who produced the high-class Galileo (Ire) trio of Japan (GB), Mogul (GB) and Secret Gesture (GB) and is one of the world's leading broodmares. This is also the Aga Khan family of Sagamiyra (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}), a 4-year-old filly in training with Mikel Delzangles who took the Listed Prix Maurice Zilber in May. The dam Sagely (Ire) (Frozen Power {Ire}) is a half to the Listed Upavon S. runner-up Sagaciously (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), who beat her when they raced together and went one-two in a decent 10-furlong handicap at Glorious Goodwood five years ago. Havana Gold’s Chipotle Strikes For Windsor Castle Triumph

Eve Johnson Houghton trainee Chipotle (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) annexed Doncaster's Mar. 27 Brocklesby on debut before making light of a three-pound penalty in an Apr. 28 conditions test over Ascot's five-furlong strip, but was compromised by soft conditions when relinquishing his perfect record in Sandown's May 27 Listed National S. last time. The Tattersalls Ascot yearling, purchased by Johnson Houghton for a bargain 10,000gns, went postward at odds of 22-1 for Wednesday's Listed Windsor Castle S., but was off script at the break and left trailing on the far side after missing his cue from the supposedly doomed one box. Sneaking forward from halfway, he quickened smartly for the overall lead with 100 yards remaining and was driven out to dip under the magic minute and secure a career high by 2 1/4 lengths from Dig Two (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}).

“He's a horse that trains himself, he travels and when you ask him off he goes,” explained Johnson Houghton. “He's an absolute dude of a horse and didn't enjoy the soft ground at Sandown last time. All through the day I felt we couldn't win from stall one, but then after the [Royal] Hunt Cup [won by Real World from stall four] I thought we did have a chance. Charlie [Bishop] had the courage to stay on the far side and, off a rattling fast pace, he really picked up.”

Bishop and Johnson Houghton joined forces to snag this meet's 2018 G1 Queen Anne S. with Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}) and the rider added, “I was quite keen to get a level break, but he bunny hopped when the stalls opened. I had to be patient, but I got a dream run through. We've always liked him and we never pressed any buttons when he won the Brocklesby and that [conditions] race here. He didn't like the soft at Sandown and, to be honest, I didn't give him the best of rides. Eve's a brilliant trainer and I feel quite emotional that she's kept the faith with me.”

Chipotle is one of two scorers from as many foals produced by a daughter of Aunty Mary (GB) (Common Grounds {GB}), herself a winning half-sister to MG1SW European champion Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}). Attraction is the dam of MGSW G2 York S. victor Elarqam (GB) (Frankel {GB}), G3 Sapphire S.-winning sire Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and dual US Grade III runner-up Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Chipotle's dam Lightsome (GB) (Makfi {GB}) is a half-sister to G3 Firth of Clyde S. second Mary's Daughter (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) and a full-sister to the dam of last term's G3 Naas Fillies' Sprint runner-up Sussex Garden (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}). Dark Angel’s Indie Angel Springs A Surprise In the Duke of Cambridge

In hindsight, a starting price of 22-1 on a Cheveley Park Stud-owned filly trained by the Gosdens and ridden by Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot was bordering on the ludicrous and despite her form deficiencies Indie Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) stepped up to make a mockery of those odds in Wednesday's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. Since Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) exited the stall closest to the stand's side in the meeting's opening G1 Queen Anne S. the day before, all bar one of the races staged on the straight track had fallen to horses also drawn highest with the other winner only three off that fence. Whether there is a genuine bias near the stand's rail remains to be seen, but Indie Angel likes her space and so exiting from stall 12 of 12 was a real benefit here. Freshened up since finishing fourth behind Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the nine-furlong G2 Dahlia S. at Newmarket May 2, the winner whose portfolio boasted just a listed win in the Fleur de Lys Fillies' S. over a mile on Lingfield's Polytrack in October was steadied in rear early. Allowed to coast into contention approaching two out, the grey was in front soon after and able to dominate the closing stages to score by 2 1/2 lengths. Lady Bowthorpe, who came up the centre along with the 11-4 favourite Queen Power (Ire) (Shamardal), won the tussle for the bridesmaid's role by a short head but was always fighting a losing battle overall. “I'll be honest with you, that was unexpected,” Dettori said after his 75th Royal winner. “She's got ability, but everything has to fall right for her. She needs cover, a fast pace and plenty of room. She was too free with me at Newmarket last time, so I didn't know what to expect but today was a good day and she just took off.”

Initially restricted to handicaps over seven furlongs and a mile last term, Indie Angel garnered a brace of wins at Newmarket in July and at Salisbury the following month before being tried in Sandown's G3 Atalanta S. in late August. Eighth there, she was disappointing with no obvious excuses when subsequently seventh in a competitive course-and-distance handicap in September. By the time she tackled the Fleur de Lys, connections had found the key to her and with Frankie keeping her separate from the rest and looping the field she was able to gain a breakthrough black-type success. Penned against the rail for most of her return to the Polytrack for that venue's seven-furlong All-Weather Fillies' and Mares' Championships Conditions S. Apr. 2, she flopped when fifth as the 4-5 favourite there and despite being kept isolated in the Dahlia was still a soundly-beaten 3 1/4-lengths fourth.

While it is easy to see why the punters had given up on her, she was able to make a step forward as older fillies from this yard can do in what amounted to a perfect storm of draw, ground, pace and the fact that both Lady Bowthorpe and the Dahlia runner-up Queen Power were racing under penalties. Solid yardstick Lavender's Blue (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who had beaten her by 2 3/4 lengths when third in the Dahlia, was four lengths behind her in this and the way she tracked and brushed aside Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) suggests it would be naive to put this down to mere track bias. She was the second of three winners for her sire in two days at the meeting, sandwiched in between Berkshire Shadow (GB) and Real World (GB), as the Dark Angel success story gathers further momentum.

Gosden, who won this 12 months ago with Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), commented, “In fairness, she won very well last backend but it went a little wrong and I probably ran her before she had come to herself in the spring. She had a little complication in her last race, but we knew she could be competitive with the top fillies. To say that she'd win by two-and-a-half lengths would have been wishful thinking, but she relaxed beautifully and she's bloomed. She looked a different filly today than when we last ran her back in May.”

Looking ahead, the senior member of the Clarehaven partnership added, “She's now won a group two, so maybe you start trying to climb even higher up the ladder. We won it last year and there are nice races like the [G1] Sun Chariot and the nice fillies' race [the G1 Falmouth S.] at the July meeting for her, so those are possibilities. Right now, we're savouring this moment.”

Lady Bowthorpe's trainer William Jarvis was inclined to blame the fast surface for her eclipse. “All credit to the winner, who was very impressive, but I feel easier ground would have suited us better,” he said of the runner-up. “When a filly is running as well as she is, my inclination is not to give her a break. She's in the [July 9] Falmouth, but ideally I would love her to try at a mile and a quarter on decent ground in the [July 29 G1] Nassau [at Goodwood], with the [G1] Sun Chariot a possibility longer term.” Sir Michael Stoute said of Queen Power, “She's a model of consistency, that's for sure, and I guess the trip was a little short of her best.”

Indie Angel, who was a 600,000gns purchase at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, is out of the Listed Silver S. winner and G3 Prix d'Aumale third Indigo Lady (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), who is kin to the Listed Rockingham S. winner Prism (GB) (Spectrum {Ire}). The third dam Simply Gorgeous (GB) (Hello Gorgeous) is also the ancestress of the G1 Premio Roma hero Imperial Dancer (GB) (Primo Dominie {GB}) and the G3 Blue Wind S. winner and G1 Nassau S. runner-up One Voice (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}), as well as being a half-sister to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Give Thanks (GB) (Relko {GB}) whose own descendants are headed by the G1 1000 Guineas winner Harayir (Gulch). Also hailing from the family of the G1 Epsom Derby hero and sire Teenoso (Youth), Indigo Lady has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Churchill (Ire) named Miss Clementine (Ire) who was bought by BBA Ireland and Ed Dunlop Racing for 90,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.
