Showcasing’s Asymmetric Strikes For Richmond Triumph

Fresh from a landmark success in Tuesday's G1 Goodwood Cup, the Alan King stable was to the fore once more when Leora Judah's 2-year-old colt Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) displayed an explosive turn of foot to bag Thursday's G2 Unibet Richmond S. at the Sussex track. The March-foaled bay had opened up with a pair of novice scores, over this six-furlong strip and at Newmarket in June, before relinquishing his perfect record when the wrong side of a head verdict in the latter venue's July 8 G2 July S. last time. Asymmetric was sharply into stride from the stands' side stall, but was shuffled back to settle fifth after the initial exchanges. Rowed along in behind inside the quarter-mile marker, the 11-4 favourite bullied his way through an opening passing the furlong pole and quickened impressively from there to prevail by a half-length from Khunan (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}) in a blanket finish. Newbury's Super Sprint winner Gubbass (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was edged out of second by a nose with G2 July S. fourth Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) finishing a neck further adrift in fourth.

“I burnt out most of the nerves on Tuesday with Trueshan and hoped and thought Asymmetric would run very well today,” said trainer Alan King. “I wasn't thinking he had to win this whereas I thought Trueshan had to on Tuesday. Asymmetric has the most wonderful temperament, he's almost horizontal he's so laid back. We were always going to step back and take a lead on him and I was just hoping they wouldn't get first run on him. They went steady early, which was something I wasn't sure about, he has a fairly good turn of foot when he does go and he picked up very well. He can go on soft, but we think he is a better horse on top of the ground and he gives Martin [Harley] a much better feel on faster ground. Luckily, the ground has dried out a bit. He's in the [G2] Gimcrack and he's entered in the [G1] Prix Morny in France, but I've no idea where he goes next. We'll see what the team want to do.”

Winning rider martin Harley added, “He travelled good and when I asked him for a gear change, he went from second to fifth. He has an incredible turn of foot and he showed that today. That was very exciting.”

Looking ahead to possible targets for the runner-up Khunan, trainer Richard Fahey said, “I think Khunan is a six-furlong horse so we will be looking at the [G1] Prix Morny and he is in the [G2] Gimcrack.” Jockey Hollie Doyle added, “We had an easy time of it on the front end, but he hit a flat spot and then he quickened up really well. It was a massive run.”

Asymmetric, half-brother to a yearling colt by Gleneagles (Ire), is the first of two foals produced by a winning half-sister to Listed Westow S. victrix and G3 Prix du Petit Couvert placegetter Fashion Queen (GB) (Aqlaam {GB}). Black-type descendants of the March-foaled bay's third dam Pizzicato (GB) (Statoblest {Ire}) include MGSW G2 Flying Childers S. victrix Wunders Dream (Ire) (Averti {Ire}) and GSW G1 Jebel Hatta third Muffri'ha (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}).

Trueshan Wins The Goodwood Cup As Stradivarius Taken Out

A G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup without Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) meant that for the first time in five years it was heading elsewhere and Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) stepped forward to claim the title in the heavy conditions he relishes on Tuesday. As he proved when winning Ascot's G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup in October, the ground cannot be slow enough for the Alan King-trained 5-year-old and with the reigning champion taken out he traded as the 6-5 favourite. Always prominent under Hollie Doyle, the bay who was last seen finishing sixth as top weight in the Northumberland Plate H. over this two-mile trip on the Tapeta June 26 took over in early straight and powered clear late to score by 3 3/4 lengths from the 33-1 outsider Away He Goes (Ire) (Farhh {GB}). Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) was 1 1/2 lengths away in third before collapsing after the line and heading to the equine hospital for a scan. “I never really feel pressure, but today something did come over me as I didn't want to let everyone down,” the winning rider said. “I was very confident going into the race. I haven't had many experiences of Goodwood, let alone on a short-priced favourite. I was feeling it a bit more than normal, but Trueshan is an exceptionally talented animal on this ground.”

This renewal was diminished by the withdrawal of Stradivarius and of Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}), but it is hard to argue that Trueshan would not have brushed aside those rivals as readily as he did the few that dared to stand against him on this ground. His 7 1/2-length defeat of Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Long Distance Cup meant that he had nothing to prove this term, but on his return he confirmed he was top-class by running second to Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) under a five-pound penalty in the G3 Ormonde S. over an extended 13 furlongs at Chester May 6. Even his latest effort when on the premises under a welter burden in the Northumberland Plate marked him as a stayer of note and so this was mere confirmation that he represents a benchmark when the going rides as it did on Tuesday.

If anything tending to over-race early behind Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the bay was sent up to shadow the latter as the Ballydoyle pace-setter gave way climbing the last part of the hill approaching six out. Getting to the stand's rail first as most of his rivals were visibly struggling in behind, Trueshan could have caved in as the smooth-travelling surprise package Away He Goes arrived on his outer but instead drew away to score with resounding authority. “He was pretty fresh early on, as they were going no gallop and so halfway round I managed to slide onto the girth of the others and he then settled,” Hollie Doyle added. “The further we went, the better he went. When I hit the rising ground, he's gone again.”

For Alan King, the win represented a breakthrough on the flat and he said, “It is a very special moment. I have been very calm all morning, then when John took out Stradivarius and we were shortening all the time, the nerves really started to kick in. I have not been this nervous for a long time. I have always enjoyed my Flat races and this is very special. This is up there with the Champion Hurdles. Trueshan can be a little keen, so I'm glad he had a proper race at Newcastle–he could have been ferocious today if he hadn't had that run.””We had to take him out of the Gold Cup, which is very hard to do, but he's very ground-dependant,” King continued. “He is in the [G2] Lonsdale [Cup at York Aug. 20] and he is in the [G1] Irish St Leger [at The Curragh Sept. 12]. I will talk to the boys, but we will probably take him out in the morning at the forfeit stage. The [G1 Prix du] Cadran [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 2] will probably be his big target in the autumn.”

Away He Goes' trainer Ismail Mohammed, who had won Saturday's G3 Princess Margaret S. with Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never), commented, “He ran super. He ran only 17 days ago and it was doubtful with the soft ground, because he has had problems with soft ground before. Group 1s are not easy and it is amazing for our group and our small stable. So far we have Groups 3s and we are moving steps forward.”

Stradivarius will instead wait for the Lonsdale Cup, with John Gosden saying, “Obviously we were very keen to do something that's never been done before, which is win five Goodwood Cups in a row. He's in great form, he's full of himself, ready to run. But I'm afraid you got 60mm of rain since mid-day Sunday and another bucketload last night. I walked the track out in the country with Thady and the stick is going straight into the bottom and it turns it into a bit of a two-mile slog. This is a horse who can travel with a great acceleration, turn of foot and put pretty amazing fractions to the last two or three furlongs, but he's not going to do it on that ground. I think at his age you've got to play to his strengths and also we made foolish decisions last year, one to run him at Longchamp on bottomless ground by the River Seine, which he loathed, and then even more stupid we ran on Champions Day on heavy ground at Ascot. Having made the mistake twice, we weren't quite prepared to do the same again.”

The Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale quickly established a reputation as a consistent source of juvenile talent and last year's record-breaking renewal has produced a number of top-class performers headlined by the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes winner Chipotle at Royal Ascot. Purchased for 10,000 guineas by Eve Johnson Houghton and Highflyer Bloodstock, the son of Havana Gold began the season with victory in the Brocklesby Stakes and is one of 32 individual 2-year-old winners to come from the sale this year.

Precocity features strongly with siblings to Group and Listed winning 2-year-olds Aqlaam Vision, Chilworth Icon, and Sweet Gardenia cataloged, as well as a half-sister to the top-class juvenile Ventura Rebel, placed in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup, and a half-brother to this year's Group 2 Coventry Stakes third Vintage Clarets by first-season-sire Unfortunately.

In total, there are siblings to 108 2-year-old winners cataloged and 80 yearlings out of dams who themselves won at two. These include 24 yearlings out of Group and Listed winning or placed mares including a Twilight Son colt out of the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes placed Baileys Jubilee and a Kodiac filly out of Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes runner up Sahool, already the dam of the Group 3 winner Laraaib.

The list of sires with cataloged yearlings includes proven Group 1 producers Acclamation, Bated Breath, Camacho, Dandy Man, Dark Angel, Dream Ahead, Fastnet Rock, Footstepsinthesand, Havana Gold, Holy Roman Emperor, Iffraaj, Kodiac, Mehmas, Night of Thunder, Oasis Dream, Sea the Moon, Showcasing, Sir Percy, Starspangledbanner, and Zoffany.

The largest consignment of yearlings will come from Tally-Ho Stud with nineteen lots cataloged, followed by Barton Stud and Rathasker Stud with eleven yearlings apiece and Trickledown Stud with ten. Last year's sale topping consignor Ringfort Stud will feature a small but select draft of four yearlings including colts by leading first season sires Cotai Glory and Profitable.

All yearlings cataloged in the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale will be eligible for the new £100,000 Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes in addition to the immensely popular £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes held five weeks later. Eighty two of the fillies cataloged are also registered for the lucrative Great British Bonus Scheme and eligible to win up to £20,000 in bonus prize money per qualifying race.

Commenting on the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The catalyst for launching the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale at Park Paddocks was the extraordinary vibrance of last year's relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale and consignors have embraced the permanent move with an outstanding group of precocious yearlings. The improving quality of yearlings being offered at the sale has been matched by the racecourse performance of its graduates, and the introduction of the £100,000 Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes will further enhance the appeal of the sale which has quickly established a reputation as a consistent source of top-class juvenile talent.”

The catalog is online now at www.tattersalls.com and will be available from Tattersalls and Tattersalls representatives from Wednesday, Aug. 3.
