Tattersalls July Ends With ‘Genuinely Vibrant’ Feel

NEWMARKET, UK–Whatever problems British racing faces, a lack of demand at its bloodstock sales is not one of them. That in itself may only exacerbate the exodus of talent, particularly decent young handicappers, to far-flung nations with lucrative pots on offer, but if sales are your business, as is the case for Tattersalls, then this week can only be described as a highly successful one.

From Friday's two sessions of the July Sale, however, the majority of the pricier lots will remain in training in Britain, merely switching from one stable to another and, in some cases, from the Flat to the jumps. This correspondent has been in the chair for plenty of TDN sale reports since the July Sale of 2012 and, during that time, a clearance rate of 100% has never been witnessed–until today. That came during the morning session of trade at Park Paddocks, before time was temporarily called to allow for some truly excellent action on the July Course.

During those pre-lunch hours, 71 horses were put through the ring and all found buyers. By the close of play, as dusk danced in around 9pm, the scene wasn't too far removed. A final-day clearance rate of 98% was brought about when only four horses remained unsold, and throughout the three days 94%, or 538 horses, were sold.

“Perhaps more importantly than figures alone, it has also been a sale with a real sense of business returning to something resembling normality,” said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony in his end-of-sale statement.

“We cannot make meaningful comparisons with last year's abbreviated and Covid-ravaged July Sale, but this year's sale has produced a level of trade that compares very favourably with both the 2019 and 2018 renewals and crucially has yet again achieved a remarkable clearance rate in excess of 90%.”

The Godolphin and Shadwell drafts combined contributed more than 3.5 million gns towards the sale's final turnover of 12,301,300gns. The final average was 22,865gns (+27%) and the median 12,000gns (+20%).

Mahony added, “Even in a sale of genuinely vibrant trade from start to finish, the penultimate session stood out with an extraordinary 100% clearance rate driven by strong domestic demand mixed with the sort of international participation which has been so encouraging, considering the widespread travel restrictions which are still in place. Significant consignments from some of the world's leading owner/breeders, including Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates, have been as popular as ever and buyers from all over the world have continued to make full use of the Tattersalls live internet bidding platform as well as telephone bidding through our team on the ground.”

Brothers Play Leading Roles…

We are coming to realise that we are living through the year of Frankel (GB). While his daughter Sky Lantern (GB) rightly gained all the plaudits on the racecourse on Friday afternoon, one of his sons was among the leading lights in the ring. Cap Francais (GB), bred by the late John Pearce, will remain in training in Britain, switching from Ed Walker to the highly successful dual-purpose stable of Ian Williams, who bought the 5-year-old (lot 677) for 88,000gns with Richard Ryan.

“We've been very fortunate with a Frankel who came from a Tattersalls horses-in-training sale,” said Williams, referring to Royal Ascot winner The Grand Visir (GB). “We love the stallion, as does everybody.”

He added of his new recruit, a 100-rated treble winnner, “He is a horse who has had a good break having come back from Dubai, and looks set to be competitive in a lot of the winter festivals abroad. He could possibly go jumping next spring.”

In this rare instance, however, Frankel was outdone by his brother Noble Mission (GB), who featured as the sire of the day's top lot Laafy. The 5-year-old gelding (lot 796) was bought for 105,000gns by trainer Mark Campion to go jumping. Previously in training with Sir Michael Stoute, Laafy has won four races at up to 1m6f, a profile which naturally endeared him towards the National Hunt crowd.

“My son Arthur spotted him and told me I had to have a look at him,” said Campion, who trains in North Yorkshire. “He's a lovely big horse and we have put a team of owners together for him.”

King For A Day…

Recent Thirsk novice winner King Triton (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) is also relocating to Yorkshire after selling for 100,000gns. The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum homebred will race on from the stable of Grant Tuer, who signed for the 3-year-old on behalf of owner Edward Ware.

King Triton's erstwhile Roger Varian stablemate Pierre Lapin (Ire) (Cappella Sansevero {GB}), the half-brother to Harry Angel (Ire) who won the G2 Mill Reef S. of 2019, was bought for 80,000gns by Shamrock Thoroughbreds, which had also purchased the progressive Bringsty (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) on the first day of the sale.

The 4-year-old (lot 767) has run just once so far this year when fourth in a conditions race at Thirsk. He will now be exported to Ireland, where he will be trained by Adrian McGuinness, who has successfully campaigned the listed winner Harry's Bar (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) for the same syndicate.

Stephen Thorne of Shamrock Thoroughbreds said of Pierre Lapin, “He had a massive profile and was a very talented 2-year-old. We have a great relationship with Roger Varian and have bought two stakes horses from him, and we were very keen to do business again. It is great to build relationship with these consignors and a trainer like him leaves a little bit left for the next man.”

Price Boost For Bargain Mare…

Joseph O'Brien has signed for three horses over the last couple of days, including lot 675, Royal Dynasty (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), from Mohammed Moubarak's Newmarket stable for 80,000gns.

The 5-year-old mare is already a seven-time winner, her latest success coming after the publication of the catalogue on June 17 over six furlongs at Chelmsford. Her sale price represented a decent return on Moubarak's outlay in December 2919, when he bought her as a maiden in the same ring for just 1,000gns. The sprinter boasts a decent pedigree, too, as she is a grand-daughter of Meon Valley Stud's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S winner Milligram (GB) (Mill Reef), from a family which includes the Oaks winner Anapurna (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and dual Group 1 winner Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal).

O'Brien's former weighing-room colleague and Speedy Boarding's regular partner  Freddy Tylicki is now combining his TV presenting duties with his role as a bloodstock agent, and he has been similarly active this week at Tattersalls, where he celebrated his 35th birthday on Friday.

Together with his former boss, trainer Richard Fahey, Tylicki signed for lot 638, the Fascinating Rock (Ire) 3-year-old Life On The Rocks (Ire), also for 80,000gns.

There will not be the usual hiatus between the July Sale and October Yearling Sales at Tattersalls. Last year's disrupted schedule included the launch of another mixed auction, the August Sale, which will remain in place for this year, and the rebranded Ascot Yearling Sale, now known as the Somerville Yearling Sale will kick off the yearling season in Newmarket.

Edmond Mahony concluded, “All the signs now suggest that we can look forward to returning almost to normal for the forthcoming Tattersalls August Sale and for the market-leading Tattersalls yearling sales which begin at Park Paddocks with the new Somerville Yearling Sale on Sept. 7.”

Man Of The Night Leads Second Session Of Tattersalls July Sale

The Tattersalls July Sale continued in robust fashion on the second day with four lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more and a clearance rate above 90 percent for the second consecutive day.

The top lot on the second day of the Tattersalls July Sale was the Richard Hannon-trained Man of the Night who was knocked down to Sheikh Abdullah Al-Hmoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah for 175,000 guineas, the highest price achieved on the Thursday of the July Sale since 2017.

The 4-year-old colt is a winner over 1 1/4 miles since the catalog was published and has a Timeform rating of 101. Showing good form on fast ground, the son of Night of Thunder has also placed fourth twice in listed company and boasts a smart pedigree, being out of a daughter of the three-time Group 1 winning champion French filly Mandesha.

A spokesperson for Sheikh Abdullah Al-Hmoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah revealed; “He might go to Kuwait, but we have horses in training in the U.K. so he may stay here for a time. We were looking for a horse who would stay further than a mile.”

The well-bred Restitution provided another highlight of the session when bought by Mark Richards on behalf of Mark Player's International Thoroughbred Solutions for 150,000 guineas.

Mark Richards, a recent repatriate following 22 years working for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, commented:

“It is nice to be back, I am acting here for Mark Player's International Thoroughbred Solutions. He is well used to purchasing horses here to go to Australia and the mere fact of me being back here is using old contacts and old friends as much as anything else. He likes to have someone on the ground to see the horses, knows the sort of horse I will be looking at and said that if I found anything that might suit to get in touch.

“I thought this is a lovely sort of horse, a lovely looking horse, hopefully he will acclimatize to Australia and he will head straight there now.”

Elaborating on Restitution's particular appeal, Richards added:

“You are just looking for a horse who can operate on good or faster ground and one you think can get a trip. He had already proven that he can stay a mile and a half, and they seem to get more distance when they get down there anyway. It is advantage to have been able to have performed on a quicker track rather than a slower track.”

The Jamie Railton consigned Restitution is by Frankel out of Restiana, a listed winning full-sister to the Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Restiadargent. It is the second six-figure sale in two days for the pedigree as Tianadargent, another full-sister to Restiana and Restiadargent, was sold to Alex Elliott yesterday for 100,000 guineas.

The Tattersalls July Sale continues at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 9.

Consistent Demand At Strong July Sale

NEWMARKET, UK——Trade continued apace at Tattersalls on Thursday, with a clearance rate of 90% upheld through two lively sessions of horses in training.

The international element of the sale was again evident in the morning session with two six-figure lots being purchased for Saudi Arabia and Australia respectively.

Sheikh Abdullah Al-Malek Al Sabah is the new owner of Man Of The Night (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 381), who held the top spot throughout the day after he was knocked down at 175,000gns.

The Saudi sheikh, who has more than 50 horses in training in Britain, was accompanied at the sale by his son Faisal, who said, “I think he will suit the big handicaps in the UK and then we will send him to Saudi Arabia. He will stay in the UK until October.”

Formerly trained by Richard Hannon for Night Of Thunder's owner Saeed Manana, the 4-year-old Man Of The Night won on his debut over six furlongs at two and returned to the winner's circle last month at Doncaster to push his rating to 92.

He led a session in which prices were again pushed up by the strong demand. Of the 159 horses offered before and after racing, 144 found new homes to add 3,445,100gns to the the overall tally. The second-day median was 14,000gns and the average 23,924gns. Once again, comparisons are difficult to the shorter format of last year's July Sale, but these figures stand up well to the rising trade witnessed in the few years prior to that.

Family in demand

Restitution (Fr) (Frankel {GB}), from a family which featured in one of the six-figure lots during the opening day of the sale, extended the desirability of his tribe when fetching a bit of 150,000gns from Mark Richards.

Offered as lot 436 by Jamie Railton, the 3-year-old son of listed winner Restiana (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) has run just twice from the Gosden stable, winning on his second outing at the end of April. He will now be exported to Australia, explained Richards, who was acting on behalf of Mark Player's International Thoroughbred Solutions.

“Mark is well used to purchasing horses here to go to Australia and the mere fact of me being back here, it is using old contacts and old friends as much as anything else,” said British-born Richards, who is now based in Newmarket after 22 years with the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

“He likes to have someone on the ground to see the horses, knows the sort of horse I will be looking at and said that, if I found anything that might suit, to get in touch. I thought this is a lovely looking horse, hopefully he will acclimatise to Australia and he will head straight there now.”

On Wednesday, Restitution's full-sister Tianadargent (Fr) was sold in foal to Mehmas (Ire) for 100,000gns. Another sibling, Restiadargent (Fr), won the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and was third in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. behind Black Caviar (Aus).

Bear fans

Robson Aguiar is a name more usually associated with the breeze-up sales and, often through his partnership with Amo Racing, he has enjoyed a successful season on the track with juvenile graduates such as Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) and Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who runs in Friday's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S.

Another son of Kodi Bear, Caio Shark (Ire), was sold through the Aguiar Bloodstock draft on behalf of Amo Racing for 110,000gns  after winning at Haydock in May on his third start. Now rated 81, the former Michael Bell trainee (lot 475) was bought online by SPI Racing.

Aguiar Bloodstock has sold 10 horses over the two days of the sale for just shy of 300,000gns.

British syndicates invest

A relatively small Juddmonte draft at this year's July Sale was headed by Diderot (GB) (lot 517), a 3-year-old son of Bated Breath (GB), who was bought to race on in Britain for a syndicate at 90,000gns.

Dan Downie, who runs the Axom and Elite Racing syndicates, said, “We will give him a couple of weeks before making a decision where he will go into training. He could be for Elite Racing, Axom or the Owners Group, we haven't decided yet. He looks really progressive and there should be some improvement.”

The 88-rated Diderot, a half-brother to the GI Beverly D S runner-up Grand Jete (GB) (Dansili {GB}), was previously trained in Ireland by Ger Lyons and won a mile maiden at Dundalk on the second of his four starts to date.

Another to bring the hammer down at 90,000gns was the 100-rated Above (Fr) (Anjaal {GB}), a former colour-bearer for Qatar Racing who was most recently seventh in the Wokingham S. at Royal Ascot. He has now switched from Archie Watson's stable to Stuart Williams after the Newmarket trainer was the successful bidder on behalf of an unnamed syndicate.

Williams said of lot 557, a 4-year-old gelding who has won three of his 13 starts, “The plan is to stay in Britain with him and try and win a big handicap. We'd like to try to win something like the Ayr Gold Cup.”

Switch of codes

Albert Camus (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 571), a winner just eight days ago at Haydock over a mile and a half, will face a new challenge when leaving Newmarket for Ireland as he is to be tried in juvenile hurdle races by his new trainer John McConnell.

The Irishman, who was bidding on behalf of Duleek Street Racing and bought the 85-rated 3-year-old from the stable of John and Thady Gosden, said, “We don't expect to improve him from where we got him out of, but with that rating, if he can jump a hurdle, he should be a nice hurdler for people involved.”

McConnell added, “He came highly recommended, the trip looks grand, he has not really encountered soft ground, but I think he will handle it. We have had a bit of luck with Teofilos before to go jumping. He seems to have very good attitude as well, he won really well at the line the other day and he looks as though there is more to come. He is a progressive Flat horse, and that is what you have to pay for a three-year-old like this.”

Godolphin Draft Dominates Opening Day Of Tattersalls July Sale

The Tattersalls July Sale got off to a strong start on the opening day with a strong Godolphin draft dominating proceedings with four of the top five prices on a day that saw 15 lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more. The clearance for the day was a remarkable 93 percent and the turnover of 5,952,100 guineas has been bettered only twice on the opening day of this fixture.

The Godolphin draft is always a highlight of the Tattersalls July Sale and this year's renewal was no exception with the well-bred Aureum topping the session at 220,000 guineas. Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock made the winning bid and revealed:

“She has been bought for an established owner-breeder client of ours. She has a fantastic page, and she made a lot of money as a yearling. She is a lovely, lovely mare, the sister was top top class over here and she is in-foal to a great stallion.

“We knew she wasn't going to be given away here, the entire draft has some stand-out mares. She is quality, and fingers crossed she carries a good foal and is a successful broodmare, which she has been bought to be.”

The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was sold in foal to Invincible Spirit and is a half-sister to the Group 3 City of York Stakes winner Nemoralia, placed in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The second lot to realize 200,000 guineas or more on the opening day was the Shamardal mare Excellent View who was knocked down to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 200,000 guineas. The Barton Sales consigned mare was sold in foal to exciting young sire Mehmas and with a filly foal by the record-breaking stallion at foot.

Barton Stud's managing director Tom Blain commented:

“She is a smashing mare, she had a lovely Mehmas foal at foot who is a good example of what she is carrying, and in this sale she stood out a bit. The foal is good and she has got a blacktype runner this year. She was sold for a good Irish client and I am delighted for them.”

Excellent View's first foal is the high-class Acclamation gelding Mutaraffa, runner up in the listed Dubai Dash and fourth in the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint this year. She is out of the listed Empress Stakes winner Pearl Grey and her sale crowned a successful few minutes for Barton Sales, who had sold Tianadargent for 100,000 guineas two lots previously. The full-sister to the Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Restiadargent was also offered in foal to Mehmas and was knocked down to Alex Elliott.

Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock's Matt Houldsworth was another to secure one of the top priced Godolphin mares when he went to 160,000 guineas to land Birdwatcher. The 4-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo is out of the U.S. Grade 3 winner Bizzy Caroline, a half-sister to the five-time Grade 1 winner Lady Eli, and was offered in foal to the four-time Group 1 winning sprinter Blue Point.

Houldsworth commented: “I thought she was a very good physical and obviously she cost a lot of money as a yearling. She's got a good covering too, I'm a big fan of Blue Point, and it's a lovely, deep family as well. Hopefully she can be a nice mare going forward. She's heading to America.”

The 30-lot strong Godolphin draft realied a total of 1,522,700 guineas at an average of 50,757 guineas.

The Tattersalls July Sale continues on Thursday, July 8, with the morning session starting at 9:30 a.m. and the evening session commencing at 5:15pm.
