Altior’s Sister Shines At Derby Sale

A 3-year-old half-sister to seven-time Grade 1 winner Altior (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) (lot 301) was the star of the show during the second and final session of the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale on Wednesday when fetching a final bid of €300,000 from Aidan O’Ryan and Gordon Elliott. That sum is the second-highest price ever paid for a filly at this sale.

Progeny of Walk In The Park proved popular on the day, with Gallagher Equine and Russell MacNabb paying the day’s second-highest price of €195,000 for a gelded 3-year-old (lot 273) from the Redpender Stud draft. Kevin Ross spent €170,000 on Castledillon Stud’s gelded son of Getaway (Ire) (lot 240) who is the first foal out of the unraced La Scala Diva (Ire) (Milan).

Day two of the sale saw €4,675,000 added to the coffers for a two-day aggregate of €9,015,700 for 220 horses sold. The cumulative average wound up at €40,980, and the median €32,000.

“Having completed the two-day 2020 Derby Sale, we share with the majority of our valued clients a sense of relief that the sale has been able to take place,” said Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Matt Mitchell. “We have placed emphasis on a substantial level of pre-planning to ensure that the registration process and the protocols were of the highest standard for all those present on the sales complex. We acknowledge with gratitude the very high compliance levels for the protocols.

“Overall trade has been remarkable, given the difficulties of Covid-19. Whilst the market is down, the quality is still very much in demand. In this exceptional year, it is appropriate to highlight part of the Derby Sale took place in Doncaster, with sales of £2,205,000 and an average of £64,853. The €300,000 achieved for the full sister to Altior reflects the demand for quality, and also rewards the vendor Paddy Behan for his belief in the Derby Sale.

“Despite the backing of Brian Kavanagh, HRI and ITM whose efforts we acknowledge with thanks, the protocols proposed by Tattersalls Ireland and Goffs to allow purchasers to attend from outside Ireland did not succeed. By providing videos of each entry in the sale we sought to assist purchasers outside Ireland who were unable to attend, with approximately 19% of the total sale purchases being made via live internet bidding from non Irish-based purchasers.”

Milan Gelding Tops Derby Sale Day 1

A 3-year-old gelding by Milan (GB), a half-brother to the ill-fated Grade 1 bumper winner Fayonagh (Ire) (Kalanisi {Ire}), took top honours during the first day of trade at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale on Tuesday.

Consigned as lot 145, the attractive bay hailed from Castledillon Stud’s draft and was knocked down to Aidan O’Ryan and Gordon Elliott for €195,000. He is from the extended family of the Flat SP Solerina (Ire) (Toulon {GB}), who would become a two-time Grade 1 hurdle winner.

Three other lots made six figures, with a filly by Walk In The Park (Ire) (lot 79) snapped up by Mags O’Toole and Tom Malone for €110,000. The Liss House offering is a half-sister to MG1SW chaser Rogue Angel (Ire) (Presenting {GB}). Authorized (Ire)’s lot 92, a gelding out of Cocopalm (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) consigned by Moanmore Stables, was acquired by Highflyer Bloodstock for €105,000. Mount Brown Farm’s lot 205, a Flemensfirth gelding, caught the eye of Jim Mangan and changed hands for €100,000.

The aggregate after the first day of the Derby Sale was €4,328,700, with an average of €37,641 for the 115 lots (73%) sold. The median was €30,000. Wednesday’s session will start at 11:30 a.m. local time.

Overseas Buyers Barred From Attending Tattersalls Ireland Derby, May Store Sales Due To COVID-19

As previously announced, Tattersalls Ireland, HRI, ITM and Goffs submitted protocols to NPHET (National Public Health Emergency Team) to allow overseas purchasers to attend the sales in Ireland. Because of the increased level of new cases, and a concern in relation to the spread of COVID-19, we have been informed that permission to use the protocols to bring in overseas purchasers has not been granted, therefore the current guidelines regarding travel to Ireland will apply for both the Derby Sale and May Store Sale.

Both the Derby Sale and May Store Sale will take place at Fairyhouse as planned and the Tattersalls Ireland team will be available to assist those buyers now unable to attend the sales in any way possible. We will maximize the number of videos available of the stores in the sales, and buyers will be able to participate through the new live internet bidding platform or through telephone bidding via the Tattersalls Ireland team.

Commenting on the update Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell said:

“Naturally we are disappointed that our joint submission to government has not been approved, but we fully respect the decision and will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that the Derby and May Store Sales run as smoothly as possible. While the sales will take place under strict protocols, we will be working tirelessly to assist purchasers in any way we can, in particular those who cannot be present due to the travel constraints. We regret not being able to welcome to Fairyhouse our overseas purchasers whose loyalty has being rewarded with purchases that consistently deliver on the track. While the circumstances are difficult, we believe they are not insurmountable and our new live internet bidding platform and telephone bidding facilities will be at the disposal of all those unable to attend the sales.”

Brian Kavanagh, HRI Chief Executive added:

“Like many other sectors, COVID-19 is having a serious impact on all aspects of our business and the international travel consequences are becoming ever more complicated. While some potential purchasers may not be able to attend in person, the current situation requires us to be as creative as possible and through Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Horse Racing Ireland will assist Tattersalls Ireland and their international buyers in any way we can.”

Kitten’s Joy Filly, Dialed In Colt Top Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale

The relocated Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale, transferred from its original venue and date at Fairyhouse in May to Park Paddocks, Newmarket in July due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, saw sustained healthy and strong trade throughout the one-day session.

Overall, 125 horses were sold for an aggregate of €3,816,490 (US$4,448,506), an average price of €30,532 (US$35,588), an improvement of 9 percent compared with 2019, and a median price of €21,978 (US$25,617), an increase of 22 percent. The clearance rate was 85 percent.

The sale was conducted in sterling and four lots sold for six-figures with the Grove Stud consigned filly by Kitten's Joy fetching the top price of £220,000 (US$281,623) (Lot 74).

Her sale was a serious pinhook result for consignor Brendan Holland of Grove Stud – she cost just $27,000 as a yearling last summer.

“I bought her off my pals at Hunter Valley. She has done really well, she is a lovely, lovely filly, she has loads of quality. She was always very natural, I am delighted it is a great result,” said Holland.

The filly's sale was 2020's penultimate breeze up offering from Grove Stud and Holland added: “It is a great end to the season. I look forward to relaxing and watching Goodwood next week, but we have got yearlings in and we are starting to prep them.”

Another of the pinhook results of the day came late in the day – the colt by Dialed In, named Onesmoothoperator, purchased by Ger Kennedy of Sherbourne Lodge last autumn for $5,000, sold for £140,000 (US$179,217) today (Lot 244). He was bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock, standing on the stairs with trainer David Simcock.

He didn't do a fast time at all, but he is bred to be a [mile and a quarter] horse so you would not expect it – he is out of a Medaglia D'Oro mare from Stormy Atlantic's family,” said Brown. “He is a phenomenal mover. he has a wonderful way of going. He has been bought for our Never Say Die re-sale syndicate. We will put him in a field for two weeks now and he will probably go to David's in September.”

“Ger found him late on in the U.S. at the Fasig October Sale,” said Yvonne Kennedy. “Buying yearlings in France and the U.S. has been good to us this year, and there has been a lot of interest in the horse this spring.”

Ger added: “The sale companies have all been brilliant with everything this year, and there is no place like an auction ring to find the true value of a horse.”

At the conclusion of the sale, Tattersalls Ireland Director Simon Kerins commented:

“Firstly, I would like to thank the vendors who have risen to the challenge of today's sale being relocated to Park Paddocks at the 11th hour. Like many in the bloodstock industry, the breeze up consignors have had to deal with difficult circumstances in the run up to the 2020 Breeze Up season, notably with today's sale original dated in May and they have met the change in date and venue with tremendous positivity and it was pleasing to see several vendors have excellent results.

“The bloodstock industry is truly resilient, and this was evident today by the strong demand for the choice lots. It was immensely satisfying to sell the second highest price ever for a two-year-old at the Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale with Grove Stud's Kitten's Joy filly selling for £220,000 (US$281,623) to David Simcock. There were considerable increases in the average of £27,284 (US$34,919) (up 9 percent from €27,992 (US$32,627) in 2019) and median of £20,000 (US$25,596) (up 22 percent from €18,000 (US$20,980) in 2019) considering that the numbers offered were down significantly on 2019, while the high clearance rate of 85 percent also needs to be acknowledged. We can now look forward to the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale returning to Fairyhouse Racecourse and Tattersalls Ireland respectively in 2021.
