Cokoriko Gelding Leads The Way At May Store Sale

A 3-year-old bay gelding already named Kalao Coko (Fr) (Cokoriko {Fr}) (lot 214) brought a sale-topping bid of €65,000 from Tom Malone during the Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale on Tuesday. Malone was the sale's leading buyer.

Consigned by Liss House, he is related to group winner G3 La Coupe winner Ultimately Lucky (Ire) (Kris {GB}), and the Classic-placed Group 3 winner Berine's Son (Irish River {Fr}).

Liss House also offered the day's second-dearest lot–lot 219, Kicour La (Fr) (Nom De d'La {Fr}). Virginia Considine Racing picked up the 3-year-old for €50,000. The gelding's Robin Des Champs (Fr) dam is a half-sister to a pair of winners.

Total turnover stood at €2,396,300 for 168 horses sold at the end of the day. The average was €14,264 and the median was €11,750.

Simon Kerins CEO of Tattersalls Ireland said, “This sale provides vendors the first opportunity to sell their 3-year-olds and the demand for quality individuals remained strong. The footfall seen over the last two days was impressive and we extend our gratitude to the large contingent of Irish and UK buyers who actively participated, alongside many first-time visitors who contributed to the bustling atmosphere at Fairyhouse.

“The early timing of the May Store Sale has always been eagerly anticipated by point-to-point handlers, and this year was no exception with plenty of demand for the choice lots throughout the day.

“Our attention now turns to the highly anticipated market-leading Derby Sale, which takes place on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 June. Our team eagerly anticipates welcoming back our valued clients and presenting the cream of the store sale crop in a catalogue full of quality.”

Affinisea Gelding Leads May Store Sale

Lot 179, a gelded 3-year-old son of Affinisea (Ire) topped the Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale at €50,000. The Knockalane House offering went to Ballyboy Stables.

Right behind him was a gelding by Workforce (GB) (lot 103) from Rathywork Stud, agent to Milestone Bloodstock. The son of Blazing Dawn (Ire) (Presenting {GB}) was knocked down for €48,000. His second dam is listed hurdle winner Blazing Sky (Ire) (Beneficial {GB}).

Third on the buyers' sheets was lot 68, J'Suis Kashe Bam's (Fr) (Buck's Boum {Fr}), a member of Liss House's draft. Joey Logan Bloodstock shelled out €47,000 for the bay gelding. His dam, Urkashe (Fr) (Clety {Fr}) was placed in the Listed Prix Rigoletto Chase at Auteuil.

Overall, 165 horses sold from 207 offered for an improved clearance rate of 80%. The gross was €2,704,400. The average decreased 8% to €16,390 and the median dropped to €13,000 (-15%).

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “Today saw the first store sale take place on its original dates for the first time in two years and the trade has been very strong. Most noteworthy was the record clearance rate which increased to 80% and turnover that surpassed the 2018 and 2019 May Store Sale sessions. We extend our thanks to our vendors for providing us with quality horses as well as every purchaser who engaged as they sought to find their next star.”

Record Price/Clearance at Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale

The twice-rescheduled Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale ended on Tuesday with a new record price of €115,000 and a new record clearance rate of 78%. Of the 211 lots offered, 164 sold. The gross was €2,851,200. The average and the median each posted double-digit increases-€17,385 for the average (+43%) and €15,000 for the median (+67%).

A gelded son of Blue Bresil (Fr), offered by Rathbarry Stud, caught the eye of bloodstock agent Aiden Murphy. Lot 121B, a half-brother to Welsh Grand National H. Chase runner-up The Two Amigos (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}), counts Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Line As (Fr) (Cadoudal {Fr}) as his second dam.

“He is the one I really wanted today,” said Murphy, the day's leading purchaser. “He is a lovely horse and has a pedigree. He is a great advertisement for the sire, he goes to Olly [Murphy] and is for Diana and Grahame Whateley.”

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “Only in its fourth year, the May Store Sale has already become recognised as a leading source of winners and today's impressive set of figures have confirmed its importance within the store sale calendar. Although delayed until August for a second year in a row, this year's sale has produced an excellent trade that surpasses pre-COVID times and has achieved a record clearance rate.

We extend our thanks to our vendors who remained patient throughout the disruption to the sales calendar and provided quality stores as well as every purchaser who engaged as they sought to find their next May Store Sale winner. We were delighted to welcome UK buyers back to Fairyhouse following the easing of travel restrictions into Ireland.”
