The Longer Game Extends Foal Demand

NEWMARKET, UK—Both the quality and the quantity were hiked, but the energy remained pretty seamless on the second day of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale. Once again business far surpassed the equivalent session last year, no surprise by this stage despite the unexpected resilience of that market, and measured up pretty closely to the tempo recorded in the pre-Covid innocence of the 2019 sale.

With the pinhookers meeting conspicuous competition from end-users, especially for well-bred fillies, turnover soared by 32% to 9,225,000gns from 7,014,800gns, also eclipsing the 8,532,700gns banked in 2019. With a bigger catalogue for this session, however, that translated into an average 39,225gns, up 16% from 33,888gns last year while just shy of 40,826gns in 2019; while the median rallied to 30,000gns from 25,000gns (not quite matching 33,000gns in 2019).

The pinhookers will doubtless find themselves under still greater pressure in Friday's third session, which traditionally sees a further upgrade.

The Thought That Counts

It's not often that the top price of the day looks equally good business for buyer and vendor alike, but that was arguably the case with the Sea The Stars (Ire) filly who topped the day's trade at 225,000gns.

After all, her sire stands at €150,000 and you can put an additional premium on foaling and raising a healthy foal to stride out as purposefully as did lot 691. To that extent, the clients of purchaser Richard Brown are entitled to feel that their investment looks very fair value as things stand. For Whatton Manor Stud, even so, this was an authentic “touch”, as the foal-share launch of a very young mare.

Moreover it was fitting that this should be one of those occasions when everyone could feel a winner, because both parties to the transaction had actually contributed to its inception. For it was Brown who bought the filly's dam Careful Thought (Brazen Beau {Aus})—a half-sister to G2 Queen Mary S. and G2 Lowther S. winner Best Terms (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), with a famous fourth dam in Time Charter (GB)—for the Player family. While things did not work out for her on the racetrack, all has ended well now.

“It's quite a good story,” explained Ed Player. “We'd had a good yearling sale, and we always say to Richard that if he sees a future broodmare prospect anywhere, that we are always in the market. And he found this lovely filly in Book 3 from Newsells—and he immediately thought, 'I'll have some of that money back off the Players!' So we bought her for 20,000gns and sent her to Mark Johnston. He thought she was quite useful, but she got injured after one run. We retired her, and it has now all come full circle.”

Reflecting on her elite maiden cover, Player noted that Best Terms had promptly produced Star Terms (GB) by Sea The Stars to become a Group 1-placed listed winner, among plenty of other stakes action.

“The pedigree was very current,” he reasoned. “Things were happening in the family, and she's a lovely individual, so we thought we had better give her the best chance we could. Obviously the Sea The Stars filly out of Best Terms topped Book 1 at 1,500,000gns, so other people are thinking that works pretty nicely as well.

“Sadly, the mare is not in foal, but we'll enjoy the moment. We're absolutely over the moon, flabbergasted. She'd been very popular, vetted a lot of times, and we hoped she'd make up to the 200,000gns mark. But to actually get it, we couldn't be happier.”

Player noted that the most expensive foal sold by the farm to this point was Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}), who made 165,000gns en route to his 150-1 G2 Coventry S. success. He has just started out at the Irish National Stud.

Brown, for his part, could put this acquisition—on behalf of Andrew Stone of St. Alban's Bloodstock—in the same category as Careful Thought, as a young filly bought with a long-term eye on her second career.

“Andrew had a phenomenal Book 1 sale, he sold a Frankel (GB) for 925,000gns and a Lope De Vega (Ire) for 725,000gns, and he's had a great year on the racecourse too,” Brown said. “We're always looking for opportunities, and she's been bought to race before hopefully being a broodmare for the future. Andrew is trying to build a boutique, high-quality broodmare band and she'd be a great addition to that.

“I manage quite a few horses at Whatton Manor, we do quite a bit together, so I've seen this filly all the way along. In the summer she was a bit 'first foal'-like, she probably lacked a little bit of muscle, but she's just improved and improved and turned into a very nice filly. She's on a very steep upward trajectory, although I had a bit of an advantage having seen where she's come from.”

French Target Petches Draft

This auction obviously owes much of its impetus to pinhookers but this was a day when plenty of end-users saw the merit of “cutting out the middle man”. Among them was Arthur Hoyeau, who gave 110,000gns for a filly from the first crop of Magna Grecia (Ire) (lot 595). This is a new strategy for the French agent, whose clients have clearly decided that a year's keep will ultimately represent a saving.

“She is to race, she'll go to the owner's farm in France,” Hoyeau explained. “We were looking for fillies, it's been tough to buy yearlings this year so we're trying to find a bit of value, to buy some foals and get them into the system. They may eventually be bred from, we'll have to see how good they are, but buying as foals is really a response to the strength of the yearling market more than anything. This is a lovely, scopey filly, a good mover, with a good mix of [grandsire] Invincible Spirit (Ire) and [damsire] Fastnet Rock (Aus).”

Consigned by Petches Farm, the filly represents an accomplished international family—most notably a second dam whose siblings include multiple group winner/G1 Sussex S. runner-up Nayyir (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and G1 St Leger runner-up Highest (Ire) (Selkirk). Her dam, who won in a light career for Willie Mullins, was acquired for 80,000gns here three years ago.

All three of the farm's draft in this session will cross the Channel, as Hoyeau also gave 45,000gns for its Calyx (GB) filly (lot 597) while Fairway Partners went to 80,000gns for the colt offered in between, a Masar (Ire) half-brother (lot 596) to the stakes-placed dam of those hardy stayers Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}).

Simon Venner, whose father Paul owns the farm, was delighted with their export trade. “The Magna Grecia filly has been stunning since day one, knockout, very straightforward,” he said. “We got her into prep and she never put a foot wrong. Every time she came out of the box, she just marched around.

“The Masar colt is a different type, and looks like he should from the family. I was a little unsure how popular he would be as a foal and slightly surprised how busy he has been. The Calyx has a lovely temperament, again she just came out and walked, just lovely and relaxed. They've been prepped very well by the new team under Ollie [Costello], so very well done to them. It's hard work up here, for them and the foals, and they've done a great job.”

Magna Grecia, incidentally, returned another handsome yield on his €22,500 start-up fee (now offered at €17,500) when Tom Malone gave 100,000gns for lot 649, a March colt from Glashare House Stud. The agent explained that he was acting on behalf of Megan Nicholls, who had picked him out but could not stay for his arrival in the ring.

“He's been bought for Roger Peel,” Malone added. “He'll board at Branton Court Stud, and will be re-consigned next year by Hillwood.”

Ladyswood Also Focus on the Female

Another playing a longer game was Harry Fowler in giving 105,000gns for the first foal—a filly by Coolmore's soaraway Wootton Bassett (GB)—out of Italian listed winner Lorelei Rock (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) on behalf of Alex Frost's Ladyswood Stud.

“Ladyswood is looking for some fillies to race, and we loved this one, she has a great action,” Fowler said after signing the docket for lot 668. “The mare was fourth in a Group 2 in Ireland, she was class, and she was early type: she won on her debut, in the May of her 2-year-old season. Alex is looking for a couple of fillies to go back and join the broodmare band, if they are good enough.”

The filly was sold by Altenbach Bloodstock, Lorelei Rock having originally been acquired by Powerstown Stud as a €40,000 yearling and retained after a fruitless trip to the breeze-ups. She has repaid that perseverance now, as well she might with a page featuring some smart black type, notably under her granddam, one of whose daughters gave us the elite runner and producer Jacqueline Quest (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}).

Yet another filly bought to work on her residual value was lot 740, a daughter of Acclamation (GB) from the family of Farhh (GB) and Fame And Glory (GB) consigned by Riversfield Stud. That was a resonant formula for Ross Doyle and his father Peter, who bought Acclamation's G2 Richmond S. winner Harbour Watch (Ire) from the same farm at the 2010 December Yearling Sale here, for just 58,000gns.

“I haven't seen an Acclamation filly like that for a long time,” declared Doyle Jr. after signing a 115,000gns docket. “I thought she was an outstanding physical. She has been bought for long-term connections to race, though it hasn't yet been confirmed where she'll go.”

But Pinhookers Still Mean Business

Needless to say, the pinhookers remained pivotal to trade—albeit knowing they pretty much need to have Book 1 in mind if finding themselves on the leaderboard after the first day. That seemed a pretty legitimate aspiration to as good a judge as Michael Fitzpatrick for a filly presented by Overbury Stud as lot 591, and rightly so: though an Apr. 29 foal, she had both the make and page to suggest some margin for improving even on an outlay of 130,000gns.

Her half-sister Ayacara (GB) (Violence) was placed at graded-stakes level in the United States, while their unraced dam is a half-sister by Pulpit to three others of whom the same can be said. And the third dam is Kostroma (Ire) (Caerleon), who was a Group 2 scorer in Ireland before being exported to win three Grade Is in California.

“I would only really pinhook a filly who is likely to get into Book 1,” Fitzpatrick said after signing the docket for JC Bloodstock. “It's difficult to get a filly by a proven stallion and with a pedigree. But this one has a champion on her page, and she's out of a young mare with two winners from four foals. She's been bought off a good farm, and hopefully there will be a good few updates next year.”

Perhaps these might start with the yearling half-brother by Showcasing (GB) bought out of Book II by Stroud Coleman for 200,000gns.

Moon First to Rise

In the early exchanges of a marathon session, bidders were repeatedly exhorted from the rostrum to emulate “the early bird”. But only one six-figure transaction was registered all morning, when a Sea The Moon colt (lot 490) was knocked down to Yeomanstown Stud for 110,000gns.

A Mar. 31 colt out of an unraced sister to dual group winner Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), he was presented by Kellsgrange Stud on behalf of Clive and Pamela Brandon of Haddenham Stud Farm.

“He'll be coming back next year, he could go to any sale,” remarked Robert O'Callaghan of Yeomanstown. “He's a very simple colt: a big, strong horse with a great walk, he kinda has everything: we were mad to get him. He has a good page and we've had luck with Sea The Moon, who seems to get better year on year, and with better crops to come. And of course his own sire Sea The Stars is doing phenomenal things.”

The dam, who is still only six, was bought from Saint Pair through Blandford Bloodstock at the Arqana December Sale three years ago for €52,000, her page featuring an illustrious granddam in G1 Prix Vermeille winner Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}).

“We were hoping he might stay under the 100,000gns mark, but for the good ones you have to stretch,” O'Callaghan added. “Hopefully he'll come back here heathy next year and leave us a bit of profit. Trade has been strong, you just have to pick and choose your battles and not get too carried away. We bought 20 [at Goffs] last week, between ourselves and Grangemore, and we'll be looking to buy about the same again here. Time to get stuck in and stock up.”

Sure enough, Yeomanstown landed four others on the day, notably a colt (lot 706) from the first crop of Ten Sovereigns (Ire) for 130,000gns at the other end of the session.

Though this lad was presented by the National Stud, manager Tim Lane acknowledged, “We met him here: he was bred by Andrew Rosen and has been reared at Kilshannig Stud. He's been very popular, with a lot of vets.”

Foley Answers His Own Stallion's Call

Poignant as the circumstances are, the Shadwell cull has been one of the big drivers across the market this year. But the empire was always on a scale that permitted opportunity to an alert prospector, as was the case when Con Marnane picked up the unraced Safeenah (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) for just €7,500 at Fairyhouse in 2018. She's out of a stakes-placed half-sister to champion sprinter Muhaarar (GB), who was of course by the same sire.

It looks as though there may have been a degree of seller's remorse, as the mare's first foal by Invincible Spirit (Ire) brought 150,000gns at this sale last year—from Shadwell. This time round she again produced a handsome return, with her colt by the rookie Soldier's Call (GB) making 100,000gns from Joe Foley.

“Safeenah is a queen of a mare,” enthused Marnane, whose daughter Amy consigned the colt as lot 659. “Her first foal is a very good sort, and hopefully he's a good horse for Shadwell next year.”

Foley, of course, stands Solder's Call at Ballyhane Stud. “Joe is an absolute gentleman to deal with,” Marnane said. “And two of the stallions he has there at the moment were with me, too: Prince Of Lir (Ire) and Sands Of Mali (Fr). I'm absolutely delighted with this result. I told Joe after this foal was born that I thought he was special, and Joe obviously thought so too. The stallion is getting gorgeous, gorgeous stock. I sent him two mares—I should have bought a share in him.”

Record Foal Draft For G1 Vendors Mickley Stud

From bringing its largest draft of 26 foals to the Tattersalls December Sale in 2020, Mickley Stud's consignment for this week has almost doubled in size again to 50 weanlings.

It may be time-consuming for prospective buyers to work their way through this batch of youngsters down in the Solario Yard but it could also prove worthwhile. In 2015, Mickley's Richard Kent and his co-breeder, the late Lady Caroline Lonsdale, brought a Havana Gold (Ire) foal to sell who went on to become the Group 1-winning sprinter and young Whitsbury Manor Stud stallion Havana Grey (GB). Another weanling that was overlooked two years ago and ended up being sold privately, an El Kabeir colt named Don Chicco (GB), is now Italy's champion 2-year-old, having won the G2 Gran Criterium at Capannelle in October as well as the listed Premio Giuseppe de Montel.

“You dream about breeding a horse like Havana Grey who will then go on to be a stallion. It's just great,” said Richard Kent at Park Paddocks on Monday as he and son Finn were overseeing the sale of their final yearlings of 2021.

“I'm also proud of the fact that the people who have bought our foals have made a lot of money. Michael Fitzpatrick bought our Mehmas (Ire) filly out of Country Madam (Ire) for 75,000gns last year and he got 250,000gns for the yearling to go to Chad Brown. We also sold a Showcasing (GB) foal for 110,000gns to Pier House Stud and they got 200,000gns, and he is also going to Chad Brown. It's great that out of two mares who cost £13,000 for the two, that their yearlings make 450,000gns to go to America. We're going to have to start following the American racing results more closely. It's what keeps us dreaming.”

The half-brother to that Showcasing foal forms part of the Mickley Stud draft this year as lot 720. The colt is by Advertise (Ire) and is out of the dual winner Cherubic (GB), who shares her sire Dark Angel (Ire) with the dam of Havana Grey.

Also among the largest consignment of the foal sale are three weanlings by Ardad (Ire), the leading first-season sire in Britain who counts the G1 Middle Park S. and G1 Prix Morny winner Perfect Power (Ire) among his offspring.

Ardad has proved immensely popular this year and has covered 156 mares, largely on the back of his first crop's exploits on the track, but it had been a different story during the 2020 covering season when mares were in short supply for him.

“We have a lovely colt by Ardad out of Dora's Sister (lot 518) with a fantastic temperament,” Kent said. “We've three Ardad foals this year and he only has a crop of 19 so hopefully they will be very popular. He's done everything right for everyone so far and we are delighted to have a share in the stallion. [Overbury Stud's] Simon Sweeting has been very good to deal with and we have ended up with 10 mares in foal to him this year so we're happy with that. Simon has priced him very sensibly and he has been very fair to the shareholders who used him from the start so I hope he goes right to the top for them.”

While Kent will doubtless feel some reflected pride next year once the Havana Grey 2-year-olds start running, he will also be closely monitoring the success of his own stallion, the 2000 Guineas runner-up and G2 Hungerford S winner Massaat (Ire), who is one of several Shadwell-owned stallions to have stood at Mickley Stud. “Massaat is going great,” he reported. “He has lovely scopey yearlings. Very sadly Sheikh Hamdan has died and he owns 51% of him. We are sad that he won't be racing any of his stock but they have been bought by some good trainers such as Mark Johnston, John Quinn and Tim Easterby. They sold much better than we thought–we brought one here and he had a 10,000gns reserve and he made 42,000gns–so that was grand. They seem to have good minds and to be athletic horses so hopefully next year they will be good racehorses who can carry on that genuine Teofilo line. Massaat is out of an Acclamation mare and his stock look like they will have plenty of speed. Mick Channon and Richard Hannon also bought his yearlings and they are proper speed trainers.”

No fewer than 11 Massaat foals feature in the draft from the Shropshire stud, but Kent has also not overlooked his old friends Havana Gold, the sire of two fillies in the Mickley Consignment, and Havana Grey.

“We've used Havana Grey a couple of times,” he said. “We sent down the biggest mares on the farm to him and he has produced beautiful, tidy horses. We sold a beautiful yearling filly by him out of Radio Gaga (GB) earlier this year for £50,000. Everybody in England seems to have something good to say about him at the moment. He's been lucky for the breeders so far so let's hope he goes on to be lucky for the trainers.”

Balancing out what is a fairly speed-orientated draft is a filly by Camelot (GB), who is clearly close to her breeder's heart. Slated as lot 787, she is out of a half-sister to the G3 Winter Derby winner Robin Hoods Bay (GB) (Motivator {GB}) and has the former champion 2-year-old Bianca Nera (GB) as her third dam.

“She's gorgeous and she absolutely loves herself,” said Kent. “When we'd go down to feed her in the summer she used to smash the mirror off the jeep as she was always trying to look at herself. She has a lot of presence and character.”

Like many breeders and vendors this year, Kent has been heartened by the demand for bloodstock in all tiers of the market.

He said, “Tattersalls are going to have to build a bigger car park because every sale we've gone to this year there's hardly been a car parking space. Years ago you'd come to the first day of the December Sales and there might be very few cars parked. It seems to be high fashion to want to be at sales now and the trade has been great at every level.”

December Delights As Tattersalls Gears Up For Glittering Finale

In what feels like the blink of an eye, we are now embarking on the final sale of the year at Tattersalls. The Newmarket auction house generally doesn't do things by halves and, if recent sales are anything to go by, the next two weeks at Park Paddocks will include plenty of show-stopping moments, with the mares' catalogues in particular being bolstered by several significant dispersals.

Before we get to that, however, we have one final day of yearlings to contend with. The December Yearling Sale can offer a second chance for a saunter round the ring for those who may have encountered a setback at earlier sales, but plenty of vendors opt to be included in this catalogue from the outset, whether to stand out in a smaller book, or to give a little extra time to a later-maturing yearling.

The sale has been streamlined somewhat over the last few years to include around 200 yearlings–the exact number catalogued this year.

Last year's topper at 300,000gns was a son of Sea The Stars (Ire) and the Oaks winner Talent (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and it is not a stretch to think that the same sire might top the sale this time around as among the eight yearlings catalogued by Sea The Stars is a full-brother to Sea Of Class (Ire). Offered as lot 30 by Oak Lodge & Springfield House Stud, the June-foaled colt is not just kin to the late Irish Oaks winner but also to four other Group winners, with the tremendous breeding record of her dam Holy Moon (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) taking up almost the entire catalogue page.

There will doubtless be interest, too, in lot 47, consigned by New England Stud as the sole Galileo (Ire) yearling in the catalogue. With the same birthdate as the aforementioned colt of June 8, this fellow is a son of the G2 Prix de Sandringham winner Laugh Out Loud (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) and his full-brother Platinum Warrior (Ire) is both a Grade II winner in the States and a Group 3 winner in Ireland.

Feast your eyes on the foals

There's almost nothing the bloodstock crowd loves more than to get a good look at the first batch of foals by each year's freshman sires. Opinions are quickly drawn, and sometimes have to be revised at a later date, but the acceptance or otherwise of a stallion's first crop by the foal pinhookers can play a big part in his future success at stud.

The group that retired to stud in 2020 included a quartet of Classic winners, comprised of Godolphin's homebred Derby hero Masar (Ire), Coolmore's 2000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia (Ire), who is in danger of being usurped by his high-flying half-brother St Mark's Basilica (Fr), Irish 2000 Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain (Ire), and the Niarchos-bred Prix du Jockey Club winner Study Of Man (Ire).

Prospective buyers can hardly have failed to notice the worldwide success this season of graduates of Kirsten Rausing's Lanwades Stud, which stands Deep Impact (Jpn)'s son Study Of Man and offers a weanling by the stallion under the operation's St Simon Stud banner. The colt, lot 859, is the first foal of the treble winner Quintada (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) and a grandson of the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio victrix Quiza Quiza Quiza (GB) (Golden Snake).

Masar's first batch of foals catalogued include a half-brother to the G2 Railway S. winner Beckford (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), offered by Brook Stud as lot 890, while Norelands Stud, where Magna Grecia was born and raised, consigns a colt by him (lot 948) out of the listed winner Twitch (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and from the family of Hong Kong champion Viva Pataca (GB).

Waldgeist (GB) was a Group 1 winner at two and missed out by just a short-head when aiming for Classic glory in France but he more than made up for it by winning three more Group 1 races during his four seasons of racing, culminating in the Arc.  Having had all nine of his Goffs November foals sell last week for an average of €54,278 and top price of €180,000, Waldgeist has six weanlings on offer at Tattersalls. These include two fillies from his co-breeder, Newsells Park Stud, with lot 695 being a half-sister to listed winner and Group 2 runner-up Aljezeera (GB), who is by another son of Galileo in Frankel (GB).

The long list of freshman sires with first foals at Tattersalls is completed by Advertise (Ire), Blue Point (Ire), Calyx (GB), City Light (Fr), Crystal Ocean (GB), Eqtidaar (Ire), Flag Of Honour (Ire), Inns Of Court (Ire), Invincible Army (Ire), Land Force (Ire), Le Brivido (Fr), Portamento (Ire), Sogann (Fr), Soldier's Call (GB), Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Too Darn Hot (GB).

Last week brought the sad announcement of the death of Cheveley Park Stud's celebrated stallion Pivotal (GB). The 28-year-old was pensioned last year and there are two chances to acquire members of his final crop at Tattersalls. A colt out of Royal Seal (GB) (Dansili {GB}), a full-sister to the Breeders' Cup winner Queen's Trust (GB), is among the Cheveley Park Stud draft as lot 589, while Drumroy Farm offers a filly from the family of multiple Group 1 winner Starcraft (NZ) as lot 1024.

Magnificent mares in abundance

We have already seen high levels of demand for quality breeding stock in America and Ireland in the last few weeks and that is unlikely to change as the sales season concludes in Britain and France.

A sad element of sales over the last few months has been the significant downsizing of the Shadwell racing and breeding operation, though as ever, dispersals and reductions of this nature offer tremendous opportunities for breeders to buy into bloodlines that do not regularly come onto the market. Sizeable drafts from major breeders are not unusual, however, though this year's offerings can perhaps be described as supersized. Furthermore, this year's catalogue includes 24 mares and fillies in a dispersal from Sir Robert Ogden and another eight from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani's Al Shahania Stud.

“Particularly enticing for breeders from all over the world are not just the specific dispersals but effectively we have a dispersal numbering 224 lots from Godolphin, Juddmonte and Shadwell,” said Tattersalls marketing director Jimmy George. “These are not specifically referred to as dispersals but numerically it's bigger than ever and there are some really smart mares and fillies in there from these teams from some of the best families in the world.”

On the equine front, the bloodstock world has been dealt a great blow in 2021 with the deaths of Galileo (Ire) and Pivotal (GB), and there have also been the losses of some major owner/breeders.

George continued, “There were a very sad few months at the beginning of this year when we lost three such significant contributors to the industry in the shape of Prince Khalid Abdullah, David Thompson and Sheikh Hamdan.”

Among the 93 lots on offer from Shadwell is the unraced 2-year-old Shomooly (GB) (Frankel {GB}) whose dam Riqa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 1298) was bought at Goffs last week for €550,000 by Barronstown Stud. Listed-placed herself, Riqa's best offspring is the dual Group 3 winner Tantheem (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}).

Tuesday as dusk falls tends to be the time that the sale ring at Park Paddocks truly lights up during the week of mares. There's stiff competition to be the queen of this year's proceedings but one who has justifiable claims to top honours is Newsells Park Stud's Waldlied (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), who is owned in partnership with her co-breeder Gestut Ammerland.

Waldlied (lot 1839) really does have everything one could desire in a top-class breeding prospect. A superior performer herself, she won the G2 Prix de Malleret, and she is foal to Kingman (GB), by whom she has a yearling colt and who is also the sire of her Group 3-winning half-brother Waldkonig (GB). Her foal this year is a filly by Siyouni (Fr).

Then there's the back story. Waldlied's three-parts brother is the Arc winner and young stallion Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Their dam Waldlerche (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) was herself a Group 3 winner, while grandam Waldmark (Ger) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) was Group 2-placed and is the dam of the Classic winner Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}). Skip back another generation to the third dam and there appears the influential Wurftaube (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), who is also the dam of the German Derby winner Waldpark (Ger) (Dubawi {Ire}). In short, this is a family brimming with class.

In what will be a frenetic couple of hours, Waldlied enters the ring two lots after the Group 1 winner Blond Me (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), who is lot 1837 and is included in the aforementioned partial dispersal from Al Shahania Stud, which will be featured in more depth in a future issue of TDN.

Another appealing dispersal comes from Sir Robert Ogden, who has been a stalwart supporter of both Flat and National Hunt racing in Britain for decades, with such luminaries as Voy Por Ustedes (Fr), Exotic Dancer (Fr) and Sans Frontieres (Ire) having carried his famous pink-and-mauve checked colours.

The 24 fillies and mares to be offered by Barton Sales on Sir Robert's behalf are led by his homebred dual Group 1 winner Amazing Maria (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who is lot 1876 and is in foal to Oasis Dream (GB), with two Galileo youngsters still to run for her. Amazing Maria's 3-year-old half-sister Turandot (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the winner of three races this year, is another member of the family to be included in the draft (lot 1874).

Earlier in the session comes one of the hardiest mares in training over the last few years, the 8-year-old globetrotter True Self (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}). She has plenty of stamps in her passport, having twice won the G3 Queen Elizabeth S. at Flemington for Willie Mullins as well as this year's Neom Turf Cup on the Saudi Cup card in Riyadh. On a diverse CV, her 11 victories also include three listed wins on the Flat and three bumpers, as well as a victory over hurdles. She has certainly given her owners in the Three Mile House & OTI Partnership plenty of fun over her five seasons of racing and is consigned by Baroda Stud as lot 1671.

One of the notable elements of this season has been the run of success for Nick Bradley Racing, particularly with some classy fillies. Three black-type winners will be consigned to the December Sale, led by the Oaks runner-up Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), who is lot 1746, and will be followed 12 lots later by the 1000 Guineas third and Group 2 winner Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) (lot 1758). The juvenile G3 Six Perfections winner and Group 1-placed Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) has also recently been added to sale as a wildcard, lot 1823A.

Another of this year's leading juvenile fillies with obvious Classic claims for next season appears in Tuesday's list as lot 1798, and is the G1 Cheveley Park S. runner-up Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). She is consigned by her trainers Simon and Ed Crisford of Gainsborough Thoroughbreds.

Meanwhile a mare with a proven track record will be offered by Goldford Stud and should have transatlantic appeal. Sunday Times (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) is the 12-year-old dam of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) as well as the listed winner Classical Times (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). Back in foal to Lope De Vega on a Mar. 10 cover, she is slated as lot 1810 and hails from a family which also includes the Irish Derby winner Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). A little later in the day, her daughter Daily Times (GB), a juvenile winner by Gleneagles (Ire), will go through the ring also carrying to Lope De Vega (lot 1829).

Looking ahead to a fortnight of what is certain to be brisk trade at Park Paddocks, Jimmy George added, “The market has proved to be incredibly resilient throughout the course of 2021 and it has been a great boost to everybody. The December Sales at Tattersalls are always very much a fitting way to bring the curtain down on the British and Irish sales season and it is regarded as a must-attend fixture for many breeders, not just from Britain and Ireland but throughout the world.”

He continued, “It is widely regarded by a lot of people as the most international bloodstock sale in the world and this year's catalogue definitely looks set to attract the overseas buyers in numbers, especially now that the vast majority of them are able to travel more freely. We staged last year's December Sales under pretty extraordinary conditions and people responded magnificently. It has been great to have been able to stage sales under pretty well normal conditions throughout this autumn and we are looking forward to doing that again for the foals and mares.”

Pair of Dark Angel Colts Added to Tattersalls December

A pair of colts by Dark Angel (Ire) have been added to the upcoming Tattersalls December Foal Sale as wildcards. The duo, consigned by Barton Stud, will sell on Nov. 26.

Lot 999A is out of the winning mare Nawassi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a daughter of G2 Queen Mary S. heroine Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert). Maqaasid also placed in the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Cheveley Park S. and is a sister to Group 1 producers Istishaary (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Jumooh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Istishaary's Il Fornaio (Arg) (Orpen) won a Group 1 in Argentina, while Jumooh's Shraaoh (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) captured the G1 Sydney Cup. This is also the family of Classic heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway).

Out of Shurooq (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) who is a daughter of dual Group 1 winner and Classic heroine Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}), lot 999B is from the same family as G3 Sweet Solera S. winner Tajaanus (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) and the Group 3-placed Motafaawit (Ire) (Intikhab).

Spread over four days from Nov. 24-27, a total of 1,072 foals are slated to sell at Park Paddocks during the sale.
