Half-Sister To Dewhurst Hero Chaldean Anchors Tattersalls December Foal Catalogue

A Kingman (GB) half-sister to G1 Dewhurst S. hero Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 1025) is one of the highlights of the 1172-strong catalogue for the Tattersalls December Foal Sale which is now online. The sale will be held from Nov. 23-26 and will begin at 10 a.m. each day.

There are a total of 161 full- or half-siblings to group and listed winners, among them 11 Group 1 winners. Besides the Kingman filly offered by Whitsbury Manor Stud, half-brothers to G1 1000 Guineas heroine Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) (lot 1033) and G1 St Leger hero Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 1027), by Mehmas (Ire) and Lope De Vega (Ire), respectively, will also go through the ring for Hyde Park Stud and St Simon Stud. G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire})'s half-brother by Wootton Bassett (GB) (lot 982) hails from the Clara Stud draft, while G1 Nassau S. heroine Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire})'s Kingman half-brother (lot 1011) will be consigned by Fittocks Stud. Acorn Stud will send an Invincible Army (Ire) half-brother to G1 Cheveley Park S. victress Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) (lot 1013) to the sale.

The sale has catalogued 92 foals out of group and listed-winning mares, among them Too Darn Hot (GB) colts out of G1 Oaks winner Talent (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) (lot 1030) from Ashbrittle Stud and G1 Irish St Leger heroine Voleuse De Coeurs (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 1032) from Hazelwood Bloodstock. Another lot of note is a Sea The Moon (Ger) colt, consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, out of French Classic heroine Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast) (lot 1034). Highlighting the nine foals catalogued by leading sire Frankel is Trinity Park Stud's half-sister to Group 1 winner Accidental Agent (GB) (Delagator {GB}) (lot 1051); and another filly (lot 1041) out of GI Beverley D. S. runner-up Awesometank (GB) (Intense Focus) from Heatherwold Stud.

There are at least 153 foals by the current top 15 active British and Irish sires and 209 lots by the current top 20, including Acclamation (GB), Camelot (GB), Churchill (Ire), Dandy Man (Ire), Dark Angel (Ire), Dubawi, Frankel, Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), Invincible Spirit (Ire), Kingman, Kodiac (GB), Lope De Vega, Mehmas, Nathaniel (Ire), Night Of Thunder (Ire), No Nay Never, Oasis Dream (GB), Sea the Stars (Ire), Showcasing (GB) and Starspangledbanner (Aus).

Shadwell Draft Propels Final Session as Tattersalls December Ends

Demand for bloodstock continued in Newmarket on Thursday, albeit at a lower price bracket, as Adaalah (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a member of the Shadwell draft, brought 82,000gns to top the fourth and final session of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale as the curtain fell on the sales season at Park Paddocks for 2021.

Thanks in part to larger drafts from the aforementioned Shadwell, Juddmonte and Godolphin, the former pair having lost their patrons earlier this year, turnover at the December Mare Sale was in excess of 60 million gns, with 788 lots sold from 964 offered (82%) for an aggregate of 62,412,700gns. This was an improvement of 45% on the sale total from 2020. Both the entire sale's average and median were also up at least 30%, with the former at 79,204gns (+35%) and the latter at 26,000gns (+30%).

Four mares made seven figures led by Waldlied (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) (lot 1839) at 2.2 million gns, and followed by 2-million gns buy Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}) (lot 1840). Sunday Times (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) (lot 1810) and Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) (lot 1798) rounded out the quartet at 1.8 million gns and 1 million gns, respectively.

Consigned as lot 2277, Adaalah, in foal to Eqtidaar (Ire), was purchased by Najd Stud. A daughter of the dual listed winner Muteela (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who was also second in the G3 Supreme S. and G3 Oak Tree S., Adaalah's stakes-winning and dual group-placed granddam Nufoos (GB) (Zafonic) is responsible for G1 Middle Park S. hero Awzaan (GB) (Alhaarth {Ire}), G3 Sweet Solera S. victress Muraaqaba (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Hajras (Ire) (Dubai Destination).

“We don't know plans yet, I need to call Saudi and find out,”said Saud Al Qahtani, who was bidding on behalf of Najd Stud's Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz. “She may stay here with other mares or she may ship to Saudi. We have also bought lot 1790, Under The Stars (Ire) (300,000gns), who is in-foal to Frankel (GB). They may stay with Ted Voute, who, of course, reared this year's champion Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}).

Adaalah's foal of 2021 was knocked down for 15,000gns by BBA Ireland at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

“This mare is by Oasis Dream, which was very attractive for us,” continued Al Qahtani, who also signed for two other mares on Thursday, among them Shadwell's winning Etaab (Street Cry {Ire}) (lot 2328), in foal to Muhaarar {GB}, for17,000gns. “He is a good broodmare sire. She has had a very nice foal this year by the same stallion. We are hoping to build a significant operation in Europe.”

Another Shadwell consignee, Sareeha (Ire) (Shamardal), caught the eye of JD Moore at 52,000gns. Lot 2379, out of the winning Saraha (GB) (Dansili {GB}), has one run to her name. The second dam is the Listed Prix Charles Laffitte victress Kareemah (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and this is the extended family of champion and Shadwell royalty Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}).

“She is for a client, we like her profile and she is by Shamardal,” JD Moore said. “She looked green on her start at Chelmsford in September. We will make plans when she gets to her new yard.”

Completing the top three lots was Brook Stud's Golden Wattle (Ire) (Australia {GB}) (lot 2294). Charlie Peate acquired the 3-year-old after she left the ring for 40,000gns. Her dual Group 3-winning dam Chrysanthemum (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who was also third in the G1 Pretty Polly S., already has G3 Classic Trial winner Cunco (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) to her credit.

Thursday's session benefitted from Shadwell's offerings, with five of the top 10 lots hailing from that consignment. Of the 163 fillies or mares offered, 105 sold (64%) for a gross of 845,700gns. The average increased to 8,054gns and the median was also up to 5,000gns, gains of 59% and 67%, respectively.

Taking a fortnight of selling into account, a staggering total of 1,667 lots sold from 2,034 offered (82%) across the Tattersalls December Yearling, Foal, and Mare Sales. The gross was 98,781,700gns, up 35% on 2020's 73,353,300gns during the first year of the covid pandemic. The average and median were also higher than their 2020 counterparts-59,257gns average (+20%) and 25,000gns median (+25%).

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented, “Beginning with Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, the 2021 Tattersalls sales season has consistently outperformed expectation and the global demand throughout this week's December Mares Sale has seen the momentum sustained to the very end.

“Record medians at both the December Yearling Sale and December Foal Sale demonstrated the extraordinary depth in all sectors of the market and we have seen that replicated over the past four days with buyers from throughout the world all contributing to a sale which has not only comfortably surpassed last year's returns but also the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

“The 2021 Tattersalls December Mares Sale has produced turnover well in excess of 60 million guineas, 45% higher than last year, wide-margin gains in average and median, an impressive clearance rate above 80% and an unprecedented 164 fillies and mares which have sold for 100,000 guineas or more. Annual turnover at Tattersalls has leapt from 260 million guineas in 2020 to more than 320 million guineas this year, a figure bettered only twice and a clear demonstration of a wider industry which has quickly regained confidence and vibrance after the rigours of last year.

“The four outstanding seven figure lots, Waldlied, Cayenne Pepper, Sunday Times, and Flotus, all paid tribute to the consistent demand for bloodstock of the highest quality which has been the feature of the 2021 Tattersalls sales season, but the real highlight has been the opportunity to welcome back so many international buyers to Park Paddocks. The Tattersalls December Mares Sale showcases the very best breeding stock to be found in Europe, and the easing of travel restrictions has seen the return of the uniquely international atmosphere to this historic fixture with international buyers competing at all levels of the market. Buyers from America, Australia, France and Japan have been particularly prominent and the throng of overseas participants have faced strong competition throughout from their British and Irish counterparts.

“As well as recognising the massive contribution from the buyers we must also pay tribute to the consignors who every year make the Tattersalls December Sale a highlight of the international bloodstock sales calendar. The major consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates, as well as the dispersal of Sir Robert Ogden's fillies and mares, proved to be hugely popular and the support of the top consignors from Britain, Ireland and France has yet again been rewarded with the unrelenting global demand which has long been the hallmark of Europe's premier sale of breeding stock.”

Foal Sale Strong To The End At Tattersalls

NEWMARKET, UK–As the prices dipped from Friday's bumper session to a more modest level, so did Newmarket's weather, which settled into relentless icy rain for almost the entire concluding session of foals at Park Paddocks.

Such gloomy exterior conditions could not dim the demand for bloodstock in the ring, however. We're not even into December yet, but Tattersalls can be satisfied with heartening levels of trade at the halfway house of its lengthy December Sale, with just four days of fillies and mares to come from Monday.

On Friday, Genesis Green Stud's Dubawi (Ire) colt brought the hammer down at a whopping 1.8 million gns, a sum not seen for a foal at Tattersalls, or anywhere in Europe, since Urban Sea's daughter My Typhoon (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) sold for the same price 19 years ago. And that had only even been bettered once, five years earlier, when Padua's Pride (Ire) (Caerleon), a sister to Generous, reached an eye-watering 2.5 million gns.

“The highest-priced foal sold in Europe since 2002, 14 of the 15 highest-priced foals sold in Europe this year, turnover in excess of 30 million guineas and a clearance rate bettered only twice this century are all impressive statistics reinforcing the status of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale as the premier sale of its kind in Europe,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony as the sale drew to a close.

“The obvious highlight of the past four days was the spectacular sale of the Swinburn family's outstanding Dubawi colt out of their wonderful mare Madonna Dell'orto for 1.8 million guineas–the highest price for a foal in Europe and North America this year–but the real feature of the 2021 renewal of Europe's premier foal sale has been the unrelenting British and Irish demand from start to finish.”

That feature has not been reserved for the foal market, with the strength of the yearling sales having more than once this week been cited as a reason for buyers to get in a year early. The extra months of keep are clearly judged as a small price to pay when set against current yearling prices.

This year's foal catalogue was significantly larger than last, when the December Sale was staged as a further lockdown beckoned, and as a result, 105 more foals were sold in 2021, with 734 of the 906 offered being marked as sold. Naturally, the aggregate improved, by 19% to 31,301,500gns, which was also up on 2019 levels. The median rose by 25% to 25,000gns–beyond that recorded for the last two years–and the average was up slightly, by 2%, to 42,645gns. The clearance rate of 81% also moved up from 79%.

Trade on a solid final day saw the average rise by 22% to 16,557gns when another 2,400,700gns was added to the overall tally for 145 weanlings sold.

Mahony added, “Strong yearling sales drive the foal trade and the significant rises in all the key indicators this week reflect the extraordinary strength of the market throughout the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and also pay tribute to the endeavours of the pinhookers who have worked tirelessly all week. Owners looking for quality foals to race in the future have also made a major contribution to a successful sale, but as ever during the December Foal Sale, Park Paddocks has primarily been the domain of the British and Irish pinhookers, joined by many of their counterparts from throughout Europe.

“The sustained demand at all levels has been notable and the record number of foals selling for 50,000 guineas or more has demonstrated a depth to the market which is encouraging as we turn our attention to a quality renewal of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale which begins on Monday and showcases the finest breeding stock to be found in Europe.”

Steve Parkin's Clipper Logistics will eventually race the top lot of the final session, a second-crop son of Expert Eye (GB) who had caught the expert eye of that operation's buyer and advisor Joe Foley. The Ballyhane Stud master has his own stallions to promote but he is also well placed to make astute judgments on those standing elsewhere.

“We have supported the sire well in his first years and we have got some very nice yearlings to go into training by him,” said Foley of Juddmonte's son of Acclamation (GB) after buying lot 1136 for 80,000gns from the Trickledown Stud draft. “We are a fan of the sire, he was a very good racehorse from a very good sire line.”

Bred by Alvediston Stud, the colt is out of the Oasis Dream (GB) mare Respondez (GB), a full-sister to the G1 King's Stand S winner Prohibit (GB).

Foley added, “He looks like Prohibit, freakishly like him, and Oasis Dream mares are very good. He was bred by the Wardalls, who are very good breeders. I have seen all the foals out of the mare over the years and he is the best one out of her. Let's hope he can prove that on the track.”

A filly by Bated Breath (GB) (lot 1070) caught the eye of Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock for 67,000gns. Bought to resell, the bay is also out of an Oasis Dream mare, in this case, the winning Adore (GB). Consigned by Clearwater Stud who picked up the dam for 78,000gns out of the 2016 December Mares Sale, the filly is a half-sister to three winners, while her granddam is the listed-winning Fantasize (GB) (Groom Dancer).

“I love Oasis Dream mares,” said Brown. “She has been bought for a syndicate to resell. Bated Breath has been going well in the US, and we bought with an eye on the US market, as a yearling, she might appear to US purchasers in next year's [Tattersalls October] Book 1.”

Weanlings by two of the leading British-based freshman sires of the season, Time Test (GB) and Ardad (Ire), remained in demand through to the end of the foal sale, with pinhookers Pier House Stud (lot 1137) and Oaks Farm Stables (lot 1084) each going to 67,000gns for colts by Time Test, while Tally-Ho Stud gave 64,000gns for a colt by Ardad (lot 1173), the stallion whom they bred and sold at the breeze-ups.

It is early days of course, but Time Test looks an exciting addition to the line-up of stallions at the National Stud and his yearlings and weanlings have been popular throughout this sales season. For 2022, his fee has risen to £15,000 from £8,500, a level which still looks fair considering his weanling average at Tattersalls this week of 33,077gns from 26 sold.

National Stud manager Tim Lane is naturally delighted with the start Time Test has made. He said, “He's the first stallion I've ever bought and we've all got behind him as a board, going back to the Duke of Roxburghe, and Ben Sangster, Nicholas Wrigley and now Teddy Grimthorpe. And because we own him we've been able to look after people.”

Lane added, “He'll have to cover a big book next year but thankfully he is a very fertile horse and that won't be a problem for him.”

Similar comments apply to Ardad, whose nine foals this week sold for 34,000gns, which stands up favourably to his 2020 fee of £6,500. The question breeders may now be asking themselves is why more of them didn't use him last year, for Ardad has only 19 foals in this year's crop. It will be a different story in 2022 after he covered more than 150 mares earlier this year, and he will likely be in great demand during the forthcoming breeding season, for which his fee is £12,500.

As ever, backing first-season sires is one of the biggest gambles in breeding. Some will hit and plenty will miss, but if you land on the right one early the rewards can be great. It will be several years before we know the fates of the latest intake, but among those with their first foals on offer over the last four days, and with drafts in double figures, Too Darn Hot (GB), Blue Point (Ire), Magna Grecia (Ire), Advertise (Ire) and Ten Sovereigns (Ire) all returned averages in excess of 50,000gns. In fact, in another record for Tattersalls, 204 foals sold throughout the four days reached a price of 50,000gns or more.

The ring will fall quiet on Sunday as breeders turn their attention to recruiting new broodmares from the final leg of the December Sale, which will get underway on Monday at 9:30 a.m.

Dubawi Millionaire Brings Joy For The Swinburns

NEWMARKET, UK–A proper old-fashioned bidding war between two superpowers of the breeding world underpinned the most expensive foal transaction seen in Europe for almost 20 years, when Genesis Green Stud's Dubawi (Ire) half-brother to Group 2 winner I Can Fly (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) sold for 1.8 million gns to Godolphin.

“I just wish Walter was here to see this,” said an emotional Michael Swinburn of his late brother, the outstanding former jockey and trainer, who died in 2016. “He owned the mare and had her in training. I Can Fly was the last one he knew and he was absolutely over the moon.”

Michael's parents Wally and Doreen, co-owners of Genesis Green, were both with him at Park Paddocks to enjoy the memorable moment, with Wally adding, “I always hoped I would breed a horse who would sell for a million before I die. I had a great career as a jockey but I'm getting on now, I'm 85, and this has made my life.”

Bidding outside, Anthony Stroud outlasted a serious attempt by MV Magnier in the ring to snare lot 965, from a family well known to the Coolmore partners who raced the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Shadwell Turf Mile winner Landseer (GB) (Danehill), a half-brother to the colt's dam Madonna Dell'orto (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}).

“He's from a great farm and obviously Dubawi is a very special stallion and he had a great Breeders' Cup. We are lucky to have the horse,” said Stroud. “The boss said 'go for it', and we have great respect for the underbidders Coolmore. As long as he's a good racehorse that's all that matters.”

Godolphin has plenty of homebreds as well as yearling purchases to go to war with, but the operation has also done well buying from foal sales, with another son of Dubawi, the 2020 Horse of the Year Ghaiyyath (Ire) being a notable recent example and new recruit to the stallion ranks this year.

Michael Swinburn, who bought the colt's grandam Sabria (Miswaki) at Tattersalls 27 years ago, added, “When I Can Fly came up I approached Liam O'Rourke and asked what  was the chance of a foal share and he said they'd be delighted to have [the mare]. She's just a pure vessel of a mare–every foal she has produced has just been a good version of the stallion. No one foal is like another, she just throws to the stallion.”

He continued, “That was just so, so nice because it is so hard to get one who gets through scopes and x-rays, and I hope he is so lucky for Sheikh Mohammed. I've loved Dubawi since his early days. This is lovely for everyone at the farm. David Hegarty is a great man and the staff have all been so loyal. It's a small team.”

Remembering Sabria's purchase for 25,000gns in 1994, he said, “I bought the mare years ago here with Olly St Lawrence and I went home and mum and dad must have got wind of it, and they asked why the hell I'd done that. But Walter bailed me out with the 25,000 and we've had the family ever since. It's probably built Genesis Green. [Madonna Dell'orto] is now back in foal to Fastnet Rock with a filly.”

In keeping with the trend throughout the week and the sales year generally, figures were up on the biggest day of foals at Tattersalls. An aggregate of 17,051,100gns was accrured, representing a 4% increase from six fewer foals sold than on the same day last year. At 60,000gns, the median rose by 5%, and the average of 93,175gns was up by 8%. Only the clearance rate dropped, from 88% to 83%, with 183 weanlings sold during the session from 221 offered.

Coolmore lands Furnace Mill colt

The day brought incredible rewards for two relatively small British breeding operations selling weanlings by the two best stallions in Europe. A colt by champion sire-elect Frankel (GB) from David and Trish Brown's Furnace Mill Stud had held the top spot through much of the afternoon after another prolonged bidding duel, this time between Coolmore and Juddmonte. MV Magnier eventually had his way at 675,000gns after the early bidders for lot 915 had fallen away, including Gay O'Callaghan, Michael Donohoe, and eventually Simon Mockridge, general manager of Juddmonte's UK operation.

Mockridge is the last person who needs to be reminded of the might of Frankel, particularly in 2021, when his leading lights have included Derby and King George winner Adayar (Ire) and Irish Derby and St Leger winner Hurricane Lane (Ire). The latter was bred at Coolmore by Philippa Cooper and this colt, a full-brother to the listed Wolferton S. winner and Group 2 runner-up Juan Elcano (GB), will now spend some time there before eventually going into training.

“David and Trish are very good breeders and we've known them a long time so I'm delighted to be able to buy this colt from them. He's a lovely horse,” said Magnier.

David Brown was absent from the sale and was watching proceedings online from the couple's home in Worcestershire, but Trish was on hand at Park Paddocks and was supported by their grand-daughter Emily, who led the colt through the ring.

“It's been worth all the sleepless nights,” said Trish Brown. “We bred Juan Elcano, by Frankel, and it was obvious to go back to him again. We felt the mare deserved a chance with him. We have her 2-year-filly by Oasis Dream with us and [the mare] is now in foal to Sea The Moon.”

The colt's dam Whatami (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) has already proved her prowess in the paddocks with the Group 3 winner Nkosikazi (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) among her four winning offspring. From a family with deep credentials, Whatami is herself a half-sister to stakes winners Whazzis (GB) and Whazzat (GB), with the latter being the dam of young stallion James Garfield ((Ire). More established sires appear under the colt's third dam, Eljazzi (GB), whose Classic-winning daughter Rafha (GB) is the dam of Invincible Spirit (Ire) and Kodiac (GB).

Brown added, “We bought the mare here as a 3-year-old for 25,000gns. She's 15 now and has been a star.”

Indigo Lady does it again

The listed-winning Sir Percy (GB) mare Indigo Lady (GB) has been a star broodmare for the Veitch and Hancock families, both in the sale ring and on the racecourse, with her most expensive foal to date, the 600,000gns Indie Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) having won this season's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. for Cheveley Park Stud.

The fourth of the 11-year-old mare's to sell for a six-figure sum at Tattersalls was this year's filly foal from the first crop of Blue Point (Ire) (lot 934), who secured a bid of 300,000gns from Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock and will be kept to race by an unnamed owner.

“Everything has been wonderful with this mare,” said co-breeder Derek Veitch, who consigned the filly under his Ringfort Stud banner. “In a way her fillies are becoming more valuable than her colts. She's young and healthy and, touch wood, she will carry on. She's in foal to Dark Angel at the moment, so she is carrying a full-brother or sister to Indie Angel, who is owned by Cheveley Park Stud and is going to Frankel. We haven't decided where Indigo Lady is going next year yet but obviously a sale like this helps with that.”

Ringfort Stud sold 10 of 14 foals from its draft at Tattersalls, including a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-sister to G2 Gimcrack S winner Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) for 80,000gns.

Veitch added, “The sale felt a bit soft this morning but there is good money there if you have the horse they want. There's not as much action on some of these foals as I thought there would be. Of course I'm only speaking from my own perspective but I don't think this sale is as good as Goffs was last week. That sale felt commercially stronger.”

More Stars at Tattersalls

Sea The Stars (Ire) topped Monday's December Yearling Sale at Tattersalls and he featured prominently on the leader board for the major day of foals, with Anthony Oppenheimer going to 625,000gns to buy out the stallion's owner Ling Tsui for the foal share arrangement with his mare Frankellina (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The first foal of the G3 Musidora S. runner-up also caught the eye of Patrick Cooper, a determined underbidder for lot 988, who is from Hascombe & Valiant Stud's long-established family which includes the Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn (GB).

Immediately following the day's top lot, Harriet Loder's Marwell Park offered a homebred Sea The Stars filly (lot 966) who is closely related to the German Derby winner and popular stallion Sea The Moon (Ger). The filly's dam Sahel (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is a full-sister not only to Sea The Moon's dam Sanwa (Ger) but also to the Classic-winning trio of Samum (Ger), Schiaparelli (Ger) and Salve Regina (Ger). With such deep roots in the German breeding programme, it was perhaps no surprise to see Gestut Fahrhof sign for the filly at 350,000gns.

The family has been in the sales headlines of late, with Sanwa's filly foal by Frankel (GB) having topped the Goffs November Foal Sale at €550,000 for breeders Heiki Bischoff and Niko Lafrentz of Gestut Gorlsdorf.

The third of the Sea The Stars weanlings to make the day's top five was lot 998, the Brightwalton Stud homebred first foal of Incharge (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who brought a bid of 350,000gns from Patrick Cooper of BBA Ireland.

Having missed out on the Hascombe & Valiant filly, Cooper was delighted to sign for this one on behalf of David and Vimy Aykroyd, who will eventually send the filly into training with Ralph Beckett.

“She's been bought as a long-term breeding prospect,” explained Cooper.

Though Incharge ran only once and was retired through injury, she owns a strong pedigree as a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Poet's Word (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}) and Group 3 winner Malabar (GB) (Raven's Pass) as well as the dam of G2 Railway S. winner Beckford (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}).

He added, “The top-end fillies are the Frankels and the Sea The Stars, and that's why we ended up bidding on two. She will go to Copgrove Hall Stud. If you buy a yearling, the horse goes straight to the trainer or the breaking yard, so the owner never really gets to know the horse, but the Aykroyds live next door to Copgrove so they can spend a year getting to know the horse before she goes into training.”

Feeling Hot Hot Hot

Too Darn Hot could well be used as an apt description of the current bloodstock market and Darley's young sire of the same name spent a long time at the top of Friday's leaderboard when lot 850, bred and consigned by Appletree Stud, was the first significant purchase by Anthony Stroud at the December Foal Sale at 270,000gns.

In years gone by this time of year would have seen Robert 'Choc' Thornton in the saddle for Newbaury's Hennessy Meeting but the former jump jockey is now happily ensconced as manager of Appletree Stud in Gloucestershire and more attuned to the commercial realities of the Flat market. With two foals withdrawn from the sale, only two were put through the ring, with the other, an Oasis Dream (GB) colt, selling for 50,000gns to Joe Foley.

“It is great for the mare as she is back in foal to Too Darn Hot. We went back to him on the strength of this filly,” said Thornton of the daughter of the listed-winning Galileo (Ire) mare Astonishing (Ire).

“It is the Dubawi-Galileo cross, you can't go wrong with that. We couldn't get in to Dubawi so went to his best son with a proven mare.”

Astonishing's two winners have both earned black type, with Gold Maze (Gb) (Golden Horn {GB}) having been placed at Group 2 and Group 3 level, and Surprise Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in a listed race.

Thornton continued, “We were considering keeping her as a yearling, but her Dark Angel half-sister missed in Book 1, so then we were definitely coming with this one as we now have a filly out of the mare.”

The Dark Angel yearling is now in training with Archie Watson, who trained Appetree's Sherbet Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid) to win the Lingfield Oaks Trial. The 3-year-old is entered in next week's mares' sale as lot 1730.

Too Darn Hot's first foals have hit the mark at Tattersalls this week with 10 sold for an average of 114,200gns, making the young son of Dubawi the leading freshman at the sale.

Bold pinhook for WH Bloodstock

Just three lots before the Too Darn Hot filly, a weanling daughter of Wootton Bassett (GB) (lot 847) had temporarily held the lead when sold for 250,000gns to the pinhooking duo of Mimi Wadham and Violet Hesketh of WH Bloodstock.

Offered by Ballylinch Stud, who bred her in partnership with Ecurie des Charmes, the filly is the first foal of the Sea The Stars mare Chrsocolla (Fr), a winning half-sister to G2 Prix Greffulhe winner Ocovango (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) and a grand-daughter of Watership Down Stud's G1 Fillies' Mile winner Crystal Music (Nureyev).

“The plan is to reoffer her next year in Book 1,” said Wadham. “We loved her, she was our pick of the sale. She is an incredible first foal and by a stallion who is just going up and up. She is the one we had to have, so we are thrilled.”

The partners have bought three foals this week for a total of 528,000gns.

Wadham added, “It has been very competitive, we have had to really push for the ones we want but we have got to have the numbers next year and you have to be brave.

“The strength of the yearling sale gave us some confidence. The middle market has really thickened out, which is really encouraging, but the top maybe not so much.”

Deerpark double

The Fagan family's Deerpark Stud offered just two foals at Tattersalls with both selling for six-figure sums on Friday.

Leading the way was lot 918, a Camelot (GB) colt out of the young mare Clique (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who was the selection of Frannie Woods of Rathbarry Stud at 250,000gns.

A winner at three, the Juddmonte-bred Clique is a grand-daughter of G1 Prix du Moulin winner All At Sea (Riverman) and a half-sister to the Group 3 winners Stronghold (GB) (Danehill) and Convey (GB) (Dansili {GB}). The mare as bought from the Juddmonte draft for 110,000gns in 2018.

Her colt followed into the ring another from the first crop of Blue Point (Ire) out of the dual winner Sar Oiche (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) from the family of Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway) and Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy). He was sold to pinhooker Eddie O'Leary from Lynn Lodge Stud for 100,000gns and was one of four six-figure foals for Darley's young son of Shamardal this week.

Brown named agent of the year

Prior to the start of Friday's sale, Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock was presented with an award for FBA Bloodstock Agent of the Year for 2021 by Geoffrey Howson, Honorary President of the Federation of Bloodstock Agents.

Brown clinched the award for his breeze-up purchase of the Royal Ascot and dual Group 1 winner Perfect Power (Ire) and he had also been responsible for the purchase and stallion promotion of the juvenile's sire, Ardad (Ire).

“I first met Richard when he was being tutored by my friend and the godfather to our elder son, the late and great bloodstock agent, Joss Collins,” Howson said. “I have always thought that Richard shows the same work ethic and professionalism as Joss, who must have been a wonderful mentor. Richard has a very similar modus operandi at the sales, including the same favoured bidding position at Tattersalls. I know that in his turn Richard now helps many young people aspiring to enter the bloodstock industry.”

Brown added, “I'm sure Joss will be smiling down somewhere that Geoffrey is presenting this to me, I really do think that is particularly poignant.”
