Record-Setting Dual Group 1 Winner Marsha Passes Away

Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}–Marlinka {GB}, by Marju {Ire}), a two-time Group 1-winning sprinter who later set a record price for a Thoroughbred sold at public auction in Europe, has passed away aged 10, according to multiple reports.

Bred and raced by the Elite Racing Club and trained by Sir Mark Prescott, Marsha made the first nine starts of her career at eight different venues across England and Ireland, winning listed events at Ayr and York in the summer of 2016 before venturing beyond the borders of the United Kingdom for the first time. She made the final two starts of her 3-year-old season at Chantilly, finishing runner-up in the G3 Prix du Petit Couvert before causing a 23-1 boilover in the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye.

Never out of the top three in her first six appearances as a 4-year-old in 2017, Marsha won the G3 Palace House S. on seasonal debut ahead of a third-place effort to Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) when favoured in the G1 King's Stand S. at the Royal meeting. Placed in the G2 Sapphire S. at the Curragh and in the G2 Qatar S. at Goodwood, she reversed form with Lady Aurelia in the G1 Nunthorpe S. prior to a runner-up effort to Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the Abbaye. She was unplaced in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and retired with a record of 10-5-2-2 for earnings of $496,881.

Marsha proved the star turn at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mare Sale, hammering to M.V. Magnier for 6 million guineas (nearly $8.5 million), a record price for a horse sold at auction in Europe. Her first foal, the 3-year-old filly Tender Kiss (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was well-beaten on Leopardstown debut this past April and her two most recent foals are by Frankel (GB)–a yearling filly and a colt foal.

Group 3 Winner Ville de Grace To Lordship Stud for 2M

Representatives of Lordship Stud were extended to 2 million guineas for the 4-year-old filly Ville de Grace (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) as Tuesday's Sceptre Session continued to toss up major results. Bred and raced by Hunscote Stud and Chris Humber, Ville de Grace was being offered by Norris Bloodstock to dissolve that partnership. Hunscote went to 800,000gns for the filly's dam Archangel Gabriel (Arch) to top Monday's Sceptre Session. Trained for the partnership by Sir Michael Stoute, Ville de Grace–who was retained after failing to meet her reserve on a bid of €300,000 at the 2019 Arqana August Sale–closed her 3–year-old campaign with a half-length success in last year's G3 Pride S. at the nearby racetrack and returned to miss by a nose behind future Group 1 winner Dreamloper (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the G2 Dahlia S. Ville de Grace was beaten less than a length into third in her two most recent appearances in the Listed John Musker Fillies' S. at Yarmouth in September and as the favourite in defence of her title in the Oct. 7 Pride S.

Gan Teorainn First To Seven Figures at Tattersalls

Gan Teorainn (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) was the first to cross the seven-figure threshold when hammering for an even 1 million guineas to the bid of the Michael Donohoe seated alongside Yuesheng Zhang during the second of the Sceptre Sessions during the Tattersalls December Mare Sale Tuesday in Newmarket. The 2-year-old filly, trained by Jim Bolger for owner/breeder Ennistown Stud, was a maiden winner second time out at Naas and belied rough odds to be runner-up in the G3 Meld S. and the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac in September and October, respectively. The blaze-faced chestnut is a daughter of Dance Troupe (GB) (Rainbow Quest), whose 10 winners from as many to race also includes Group 3-placed Jellicle Ball (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and listed-placed Aquilla (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). From his first crop, Saxon Warrior was represented by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Victoria Road (Ire).

Archangel Gabriel Sets the Standard at Tattersalls

Offered as lot 1622 at the midway stage of the first of two Sceptre Sessions during the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in Newmarket, the Archangel Gabriel (Arch–Princess Kris {GB}, by Kris {GB}) fetched a final bid of 800,000gns from Hunscote Stud to dissolve the partnership between that operation and Chris Humber. The 9-year-old, a full-sister to US Grade I winner Prince Arch and a half-sister to G1 National S. winner Kingsfort (War Chant) and to the dam of Group 3 winners Pincheck (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Valeria Messalina (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was consigned by Norris Bloodstock. Archangel Gabriel, already the dam of G3 Pride S. heroine Ville de Grace (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}), was sold carrying to St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). “We were one of the partners so obviously we were paying 50p in the pound,” said successful purchaser Andy Lloyd of Hunscote Stud. “She is a gorgeous mare, you don't get many chances and we had one. I think she is decent buy for us on what she has bred. She has got a good cover and the family is very active, very lucky to keep her.” Archangel Gabriel's foals have performed well as yearlings in this ring, her son King of York (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) having fetched 350,000gns before her current 2-year-old, the filly Foederati (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) made 325,000gns. Archangel Gabriel foaled a full-brother to the latter this season.
