Cheveley Park Stud Adds To Select NH Team

With restrictions surrounding race meetings continuing in Britain, the Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale was relocated to Tattersalls HQ at Park Paddocks and it was a famous Newmarket name at the top of the buyers’ list.

Cheveley Park Stud, traditionally one of Britain’s foremost owner-breeder operations on the Flat, has enjoyed increasing success with a clutch of well-selected jumpers in recent seasons, with the hugely exciting novice chaser Envoi Allen (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) at the head of the group. Two new recruits were added to the team on Thursday in the form of the day’s top two lots, Grangeclare West (Ire) and Guily Billy (Fr), at £430,000 and £310,000 respectively.

The former (lot 8) is a 4-year-old son of the late Glenview Stud stalwart Presenting (GB) out of a half-sister to the prolific chase winner Gunner Welburn (GB) (Gunner B {GB}). Grangeclare West made his debut in the point-to-point field in the hands of Jamie Codd at Lingstown on Nov. 22 and won by four lengths for trainer Denis Murphy. His next start will be under rules for Gordon Elliott, trainer of Envoi Allen, as well as Cheveley Park Stud’s recent Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Ballyadam (Ire) (Fame And Glory {GB}).

The AQPS 4-year-old Guily Billy (lot 15) is a son of the former Haras de Cercy resident Coastal Path (GB) and the winning hurdler Ukie (Fr) (Dom Alco {Fr}). He won his second point-to-point start in mid-November for Donnchadh Doyle, who consigned the grey through his Monbeg Stables.

The same vendor was also responsible for Fameaftertheglory (GB) (Fame And Glory {GB}), who won his maiden point-to-point last weekend at Mainstown. Bred by Will Kinsey, the 4-year-old (lot 43) was sold last year at the Goffs Land Rover Sale for €42,000 and this time around went for £100,000 to Champion Hurdle-winning trainer Gavin Cromwell.

Forty-four lots were offered during the lunchtime sale, with 32 sold for a total of £2,378,000 and an average price of £74,312.

Matthew Prior, Head of Tattersalls Cheltenham Sales, said at the close of the day’s business, “As has been the case for so many in the bloodstock and racing industry in 2020, the point-to-point sector has experienced huge disruptions and challenges as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Having been unable to return to Chelteham Racecourse since the Cheltenham Festival, we are incredibly grateful to our loyal vendors and purchasers who have shown great resilience in supporting the necessary fixture changes during the Autumn season.”

He added, “Nonetheless, we are still able to reflect on what has been a phenomenal year for Tattersalls Cheltenham graduates on the raceourse, with no less than seven Grade 1 winners including Festival winners Monkfish, Ferny Hollow, Shishkin and racing’s latest superstar Envoi Allen. It has been with great pleasure and pride that today we have welcomed the National Hunt fraternity to Tattersalls in Newmarket for the first ever point-to-point sale to be staged at Park Paddocks, and we were delighted with a top price of £430,000 which was the third-highest price in Tattersalls Cheltenham’s history. Naturally our desire is for the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales to return to the home of National Hunt Racing at the earliest opportunity in 2021, but until such time today’s healthy trade has demonstrated Park Paddocks’ ability to service the sector with distinction.”

Further Change To NH Sales Schedules

Tattersalls and Goffs have released further changes to the schedule of point-to-point sales in December.

The Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale, which originally had been scheduled to follow the end of the Tattersalls December Mares’ Sale on Thursday, Dec. 3, will now be staged at Park Paddocks in Newmarket a week later on Thursday, Dec. 10.

Goffs UK will hold its December P2P Sale at Yorton Farm Stud in Wales on Thursday, Dec. 17.

“Not for the first time in 2020 Tattersalls and Goffs have worked collaboratively in the best interests of all concerned,” said Matthew Prior, Head of the Tattersalls Cheltenham Sales. “The revised schedule will allow our mutual clientele to take part in both sales and we look forward to hosting our first P2P Sale in Newmarket. We are aware that Goffs have an established NH Sale on the same day as our revised date, and we appreciate their acceptance that extenuating circumstances make this one-off clash unavoidable.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent added, “We would like to thank Tattersalls for once again working with us to find a solution that best assists the point-to-point market during this busy autumn period. Goffs received some very positive feedback after the Yorton Farm Sale on 12 November and have reacted to requests from vendors to revisit this concept on 17 December. We are grateful to the Futter and Potter families for hosting us again and we look forward to working with vendors to compile the catalogue of horses in the coming weeks.”

New Record Price at Fairyhouse

Ginto (Fr) (Walk in the Park {Ire}) (lot 5) set a new record for a horse sold at Fairyhouse when bringing €470,000 to top the Tattersalls Cheltenham November (Ireland) Sale on Friday. Snapped up by Noel and Valerie Moran’s Bective Stud, the winning 4-year-old gelding will remain with Gordon Elliott. Consigned by Cullentra House Stables, he won a maiden at Tattersalls by 12 lengths on Oct. 25.

Another 4-year-old gelding, Gringo d’Aubrelle (Fr) (Saddler Maker {Ire}) (lot 16), made €270,000 also from Bective Stud. Consigned by Monbeg Stables, the bay won on debut at Loughanmore.

A third lot brought €250,000, the grey gelding Gentlemansgame (GB) (Gentlewave {Ire}) (lot 9). Knocked down to Mags O’Toole, he was offered by Monbeg Stables.

Of the 25 lots catalogued, 24 were offered with 13 sold (54%) for a gross of €1,644,000. The average was €126,461 and the median was €75,000.

“Having initially moved this fixture from its Cheltenham home to Tattersalls Ireland as a result of COVID-19, new ground has been broken with today’s sale being the first live online auction to be held by the Tattersalls group,” said Matthew Prior, Head of Tattersalls Cheltenham Sales. “We have witnessed strong demand for the top end of the market, with purchasers from both Ireland and the UK competing for the cream of the Irish point-to-point crop via a combination of internet bidding and telephone bids. The highlight of the day was the sale of the hugely exciting prospect Ginto, whose price of €470,000 marks him out as the highest price horse to ever be sold at Fairyhouse, which is testament to the location being able to service this sector. It would be remiss to not acknowledge that trade has been difficult for some vendors with a selective clearance rate and we will certainly review the format ahead of the next sale. We would like to thank vendors who have thrown their support behind this new concept, providing us with the same accustomed quality that is the hallmark of Tattersalls Cheltenham sales and those purchasers that have participated in the sale.”

Tattersalls Cheltenham Autumn Fixtures Changed

Tattersalls Cheltenham will not be hosting the rest of its 2020 sales fixtures at Cheltenham Racecourse due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the Cheltenham November Sale will take place at Fairyhouse in Ireland on Nov. 12. Park Paddocks will host the Cheltenham December Sale on Dec. 3 and there will be an alternative Cheltenham December Sale back at Fairyhouse on Dec. 17. The Oct. 23 Tattersalls Cheltenham October Sale has been cancelled.

“Whilst we naturally look forward to returning to Cheltenham Racecourse as soon as restrictions allow, this solution offers vendors and purchasers the best available opportunities to trade in Ireland and the UK in what are difficult circumstances,” said Tattersalls Cheltenham Head Matthew Prior.
