Silver Dust Finds Sloppy Going To His Liking In Ben Ali

Tom Durant's veteran Tapit gelding, Silver Dust, emerged from a five-horse blanket finish to win Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Ben Ali Stakes over a sloppy main track at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. Adam Beschizza was aboard the winner for trainer Bret Calhoun.

Night Ops, the 4-5 favorite, was second, beaten a half-length, with Beau Luminarie third, Sprawl fourth and Treasure Trove rounding out the field of five older runners. A total of three-quarters of a length separated the entire field at the wire.

Silver Dust covered 1 1/8 miles on the sloppy surface in 1:50.21 after fractions of :23.79, :47.63, 1:12.32 and 1:37.28. The third choice in the wagering at 9-2, Silver Dust paid $11.20 to win.

Sprawl jumped out to the early advantage, with Silver Dust just to his outside throughout the running of the Ben Ali. Beau Luminarie and Night Ops were in the second flight with Treasure Trove trailing the field.

Silver Dust poked his head in front rounding the final turn, but Sprawl continued to fight back along the inside. Those two were joined in deep stretch, by Beau Luminarie to Silver Dust's outside and Night Ops and Treasure Trove further to the outside.

The win was the fourth G3 victory for Silver Dust and his seventh win overall from 33 starts. The winner's share moved his career earnings to $975,677.

Silver Dust was bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation. He was produced from the Hard Spun mare, Filare L'Oro.

Simply Ravishing Retired, Breeding Plans To Be Determined

Grade 1 winner Simply Ravishing has been retired from racing and will start her broodmare career, with the aim of selling her at one of the major November mixed sales this fall, TVG and BloodHorse report.

The 3-year-old daughter of Laoban finished last of six after setting the early pace in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland on April 3.

“Simply Ravishing cooled out sound,” trainer Kenny McPeek wrote on social media after the retirement was announced. “She has a minor breathing issue that we are unable to resolve in time for the Kentucky Oaks. We are disappointed and will do what's right for her. At her best she has freaky talent and she showed that in the Grade 1 Alcibiades.”

Stallions under consideration for Simply Ravishing's first mating include leading sires Curlin, Into Mischief, and Tapit.

Simply Ravishing won three of six starts during her on-track career for earnings of $422,200.

After winning on debut in Saratoga, Simply Ravishing made her first stakes start in a rained-off-the-turf P. G. Johnson Stakes at the same track, winning by 6 1/2 lengths. She then jumped into the deep end, and proved to be just as dominant, winning the G1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland by 6 1/4 lengths.

After finishing fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Simply Ravishing ended her 2-year-old season with another fourth in the G2 Golden Rod Stakes. The Ashland was her first start of 2021.

Bred in New York by Meg Levy, Simply Ravishing raced for the partnership of Harold Lerner, Magdalena Racing, and Nehoc Stables.

Report: Greatest Honour Off Derby Trail

According to a report from Daily Racing Form's Jay Privman, leading GI Kentucky Derby contender Greatest Honour (Tapit) will be forced to miss the “Run for the Roses” and will instead get approximately 60 days off. Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey had the Courtlandt Farms homebred examined by Dr. Larry Bramlage after not being satisfied with how he came out of a somewhat disappointing third as the 4-5 favorite in the GI Curlin Florida Derby Mar. 27. The regally bred bay colt had taken each of his three starts prior to the Florida Derby, including the Jan. 30 GIII Holy Bull S. and Feb. 27 GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S.

Greatest Honour Ruled Out Of Kentucky Derby, Will Have 60 Days Off

Most recently third as the favorite in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, Donald and Donna Adams' homebred Greatest Honour will not run in the Kentucky Derby on May 1, reports the Daily Racing Form. Veteran trainer Shug McGaughey was not pleased with how the 3-year-old son of Tapit exited the race, and sent him to the renowned Dr. Larry Bramlage for a full evaluation.

The decision was made that Greatest Honour should have 60 days off, the first 30 of which are to have the colt turned out on the farm.

After reeling off wins in the G3 Holy Bull and G2 Fountain of Youth, the latter especially impressive when he overcame trouble to win, Greatest Honour would have been one of the top choices for the Run for the Roses, even considering his third-place finish in the Florida Derby. Instead, the colt will miss the entire Triple Crown season.
