Ardad’s Perfect Power Battles To Prix Morny Glory

Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's 2-year-old colt Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) became the first stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Kodiac {GB}) when plundering Royal Ascot's June 17 G2 Norfolk S. and, despite a blip when fifth in last month's July 29 G2 Richmond S. at Goodwood, notched another first for the Overbury Stud incumbent with a decisive victory in Sunday's G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville, a “Win And You're In” for the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar in November. The January-foaled bay had earlier bettered a May 25 debut third at Newcastle with a 2 1/4-length graduation over five furlongs at Hamilton and was  renewing rivalry with Richmond S. winner Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) and a host of others in this straight six-furlong dash. Anchored at the tail of the field by Christophe Soumillon and under cover through halfway as Solotov (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) set the early fractions, the 19-5 second favourite inched ever closer once leaving the quarter-mile marker behind and quickened smartly under late rousting after joining the front rank at the eighth pole to win going away by 1 1/4 lengths from Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

“He was quite unlucky in the Richmond and I'd have been very disappointed if he had not beaten all the horses that had finished in front of him in that race,” said the owner's racing manager Bruce Raymond. “I'm not saying I though he'd win, but I was expecting a good run from the horse. It was a slow, messy race and he had to work his way through horses on more than one occasion. It worked out beautifully in the end. He is all speed and a pure sprinter so the logical step would be to go to the [Sept. 25 G1 Juddmonte] Middle Park S. [at Newmarket] next. We hope he trains on next year and we'll see what happens when the time comes.”

Perfect Power engaged in a minor tussle with eventual runner-up Trident approaching the final furlong and the latter's rider Mickael Barzalona commented, “I'm certainly disappointed to have been beaten, which is always the case when you finish second in a Group 1 race. However, it was only the third run of his life and I'm delighted with that. I think he will stay further.”

Martin Harley, who was also in the plate for Asymmetric's G2 Richmond success, added, “I had some concerns about the [good-to-soft] ground beforehand, but he travelled smoothly throughout the race. I thought we might have a chance of winning with 2 1/2 furlongs to race, but he didn't quicken as I thought he might when I asked him. He really would have liked it faster and I expect the Middle Park will be his next stop.”

Perfect Power becomes the first Group 1 winner for his first-crop sire (by Kodiac {GB}) and is the first foal bred from Sagely (Ire) (Frozen Power {Ire}), herself a dual-winning half-sister to the Listed Upavon S. runner-up Sagaciously (Ire) (Lawman {Ire}). Descendants of the January-foaled bay's third dam Saga d'Ouilly (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) include Listed Derby du Midi victor Sagaroi (Fr) (King's Best), Listed Prix Aymeri de Mauleon scorer Sagauteur (Fr) (Literato {Fr}) and this year's Listed Prix Maurice Zilber-winning G1 Prix Rothschild runner-up Sagamiyra (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). Saga d'Ouilly is a full-sister to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning sire Sagamix (Fr) and G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Sage et Jolie (Fr), herself the dam of G1 Prix d'Ispahan-winning sire Sageburg (Fr) (Johannesburg). His fourth dam, G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Saganeca (Sagace {Fr}), is responsible for G1 Grand Criterium victor and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe placegetter Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) and Listed Pontefract Castle S. runner-up Shastye (Ire) (Danehill), herself the dam of five stakes winners headed by G1 International S. and G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and his G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Hong Kong Vase-winning full-brother Mogul (GB). Sagely has a yearling filly by Kodiac (GB) and a weanling colt by Galileo Gold (GB) to come.

Mehmas’s Lusail Wins The Gimcrack

Defying a three-pound penalty for his success in the G2 July S., Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) continued Al Shaqab Racing's purple patch with the juveniles in Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. at York. Always perfectly placed behind the pace-setters by Pat Dobbs, the 7-2 second favourite stayed on past Gis a Sub (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) just inside the final furlong en route to a 1 1/4-length success from that long-time leader, with Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) 3/4 of a length behind in third. “He's very babyish and we haven't got to the bottom of him yet,” the winning rider said. “I got to the front about half a furlong earlier than I wanted. He's quick enough for six, but seven is not a problem for him either and he's so laid-back. He's a nicer type of a horse than Mehmas with a lot more scope. This guy has everything you need.”

Trading at 28-1 when springing a surprise on his debut over this course and distance May 13, Lusail ran into two smart opponents in Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Khunan (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}) when third behind the subsequent G2 Vintage S. winner and G2 Richmond S. runner-up over this trip on soft ground at Pontefract 15 days later. Making all over seven furlongs at Newmarket June 19, the bay returned to the latter venue to upstage Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) in the G2 July S. and after that rival took the G2 Richmond S. and the fourth Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) the G1 Phoenix S. the form of that July 8 contest was looking rock-solid. With the operation already boasting this stable's G3 Molecomb S. winner Armor (GB) (No Nay Never) and Ebro River, the hardest task may be keeping the trio apart from here.

Richard Hannon said, “He's never done much at home, but often I find they are the best 2-year-olds. He wasn't there in his coat even in the July Stakes and didn't look great that day, but that's just him. Of all our 2-year-olds, he is the one with the most scope and he's going to be a big powerful horse next year. He's already got seven and I'd love to take him to the [G1] Dewhurst [at Newmarket Oct. 9], but he's in the [G1] Middle Park [at Newmarket Sept. 25] and the [G1 Prix] Jean-Luc Lagardere [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 3] so they are all possibilities. He's done it both ways, as in the July he was up with two others who dropped out and he was the only one who kept going and today he had a lead. That's hugely encouraging and he's an amenable horse and lovely to have anything to do with. Him getting beaten at Pontefract might have been the making of him, as we didn't go to Royal Ascot on the back of that defeat but he won't go on soft at all. He didn't go to Goodwood for that reason and that was the right decision. The Guineas is the long-term objective and he's big and strong enough, so that's the end-game. He's doing this in spite of his size, as he's a big physical.”

A useful type for Alan Jarvis, Lusail's dam Diaminda (Ire) (Diamond Green {Fr}) was tried in the 2013 G1 1000 Guineas won by this stable's Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}) but trailed in last and was retired with her best effort being a fourth in the Listed Dick Poole Fillies' S. over this trip. She is a half to Fayr Jag (Ire) (Fayruz {GB}), one of man-of-the-moment Tim Easterby's best as the winner of the G1 Golden Jubilee S., G3 Ridgewood Pearl S., G3 Chipchase S. and G3 Hackwood S. Her daughter of Kodiac (GB) is due to sell at the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, while she also has a filly foal by Cotai Glory (GB).

First Group 1 For Galileo Gold As Ebro River Best In The Phoenix

On the premises but off the board in a trio of group 2s in his native Britain, Al Shaqab Racing's Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) benefitted from a change in tactics to make virtually all in Sunday's G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. at The Curragh. In front before racing a furlong, the Hugo Palmer-trained 12-1 shot had the stand's rail to help and gave generously for Shane Foley as TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) joined battle approaching the furlong pole. As that rival and the G2 Railway S. first and second Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) and Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) made it four across the track there, it was the British raider who gave most to see off Dr Zempf by 3/4 of a length with the 6-4 favourite Go Bears Go a head behind in third. Foley, who was in Saratoga on Saturday and returned to home soil in the morning, said, “Hugo fancied the horse. He's tough and genuine and I just said I wouldn't mind changing tactics, as they had been dropping him in. It looked like there wasn't much pace today and with that tailwind it's hard to get them back.”

Impressive when the 3 1/4-length winner of the Listed National S. over five furlongs at Sandown May 27, Ebro River was a creditable fifth in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot June 15 before finishing fourth in the G2 July S. at Newmarket July 8. Again in that position in a slowly-run renewal of the G2 Richmond S. at Goodwood July 29, the chestnut enjoyed being allowed to bowl along and as his sire had done in the 2016 G1 2000 Guineas got the rail and refused to relinquish. “He jumped and probably travelled too strongly if anything–we went end-to-end but I had a willing partner,” Foley said. “He had a good run in the Coventry, but had been keen and awkward and doing things wrong. It was an ideal day to make it, as we had the draw and it's all come together. I thought he'd be vulnerable, as he'd travelled so strong in my hands for the first three and I thought they might swallow him but he dug in and I was comfortable in the last 100 yards. I think he's a horse with a lot of talent and the softer the ground the better you'll see of him. He felt like he would get seven furlongs no problem if he learns to relax. He was a lot better today and I felt that even if they went another half a furlong he'd still be in front.”

Ebro River has a chance of emulating the last two years' Phoenix winners Siskin (First Defence) and Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in getting a mile next year, but his dam Soft Power (Ire) (Balmont) has mainly sprinters in her immediate family. She is kin to Key Rose (Ire) (Key of Luck), who was third in the Listed Flame of Tara S. in its former guise as a six-furlong contest and is a full-sister to the dam of the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 July Cup hero Slade Power (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}). This is the dynasty of the GI King's Bishop S. hero The Big Beast (Yes It's True) and the GI Hollywood Derby hero Slew the Dragon (Seattle Slew). Soft Power's yearling filly is by Mehmas (Ire), while she also has a filly foal by Inns of Court (Ire).

Galileo Gold’s Oscula Makes All in the Six Perfections

Fresh off a fourth in Newmarket's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. last month, Nick Bradley Racing's 2-year-old filly Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) stepped forward to register a pillar-to-post victory in Tuesday's G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing at Deauville. The April-foaled bay had previously snagged two of her first three starts, including Epsom's June 4 Woodcote S., and hit the board in the June 18 G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot. Sharply into stride and seizing immediate control of this seven-furlong test, the 43-5 chance was largely untroubled throughout and maintained a relentless tempo under continued rousting in the straight to comfortably hold the hitherto undefeated Listed Prix Roland de Chambure victrix Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and fellow British raider Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths and a neck.

“She is blessed with plenty of talent and is an easy filly to ride,” said jockey Ryan Moore after securing a first win in the contest. “She had won well [in the Woodcote] at Epsom and ran with credit after that in two Group races. She deserved to win a race like this.”

Winning trainer George Boughey, after notching a first pattern-race win of his own, added, “I think she appreciated running on soft ground again, she was very good and toughed it out. It was very quick [going] when she ran at Newmarket the other day and Ryan [Moore] gave her a peach of a ride here. She's quite a progressive filly and it was nice to see her stay the seven furlongs. She's always shown that she could do it and it's nice to see her putting it into action and winning a Group race. She should be a lot of fun for the owners going forward and I imagine she could get a mile. It wouldn't be a surprise to see her go back to France for the [G1] Prix Marcel Boussac at the end of the year on Arc day. It's a lot of hard work that goes into it at home and huge credit to everyone.”

Oscula, half-sister to a yearling colt by Kessaar (Ire), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by a half-sister to Listed Silken Glider S. and Listed Rothesay S. placegetter Coeur d'Amour (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). She becomes the third black-type scorer for her freshman sire (by Paco Boy {Ire}). Descendants of her dual-winning third dam Refined (Ire) (Statoblest {Ire})) include G2 Mill Reef S. scorer and G1 Golden Jubilee S. runner-up Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil), G3 Molecomb S. and G3 Sirenia S. winner Brown Sugar (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), fellow G3 Sirenia S. victor Burnt Sugar (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and stakes-winning G3 Prix de Cabourg runner-up Darkanna (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).
