Grade 1 Winner Rock Your World Retired To Spendthrift Farm

Rock Your World, this year's Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby winner by leading sire Candy Ride, has been retired from racing and will stand the 2022 breeding season at Spendthrift Farm for a fee of $10,000 S&N.

“Rock Your World is a fast Santa Anita Derby winner with a wonderful blend of looks, pedigree and sire power,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “He's a $650,000 yearling and you can see why. He's one imposing individual and as good-looking of a Candy Ride as you'll find. Rock Your World possesses a true classic dirt pedigree, with Empire Maker and Giant's Causeway as his first two broodmare sires. We believe there's a lot to like, especially through our Share The Upside program. We will begin showing Rock Your World today and I invite all breeders to come out and see him.”

Rock Your World will participate in Spendthrift's renowned “Share The Upside” breeding program in 2022 for a fee of $12,500 for a two-year commitment. Breeders must breed a mare in 2022 and 2023 and have two foals total. After the breeder has the second live foal in 2024 and pays the stud fee, he or she will earn a lifetime breeding right.

Trained by John Sadler, Rock Your World won on debut on New Year's Day going six furlongs before stretching out around two turns to win the one-mile Pasadena Stakes in his second start – both coming over the Santa Anita turf course. In his third start in April, the imposing 3-year-old asserted himself as a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby with a powerhouse 4 1/4-length victory over eventual Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby in his first start on the dirt.

Rock Your World stopped the clock in 1:49.17 for 1 1/8 miles, earning a 100 Beyer – the only triple-digit Beyer earned before the Kentucky Derby among this year's field.

Owned by Hronis Racing and Talla Racing, Rock Your World retires with earnings of $612,100. A $650,000 yearling purchase, he is out of the multiple stakes-winning Empire Maker mare Charm the Maker. His first three dams are all multiple stakes winners or graded stakes winners.

Rock Your World Retired To Spendthrift

Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}–Charm the Maker, by Empire Maker), who defeated GI Kentucky Derby winner and GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Medina Spirit (Protonico) in the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby in his first start on the dirt, has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2022 at Spendthrift Farm. The nursery had previous announced the acquisition in last April.

The handy winner of a six-furlong turf sprint on career debut at Santa Anita Jan. 1, the $650,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase took the one-mile Pasadena S. Feb. 27 by a widening 2 1/4-lengths and proved not for catching in the Santa Anita Derby, reporting home a 4 1/4-length winner. Compromised by a horrendous start in the Run for the Roses, Rock Your World was a battling runner-up in the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar Aug. 29, dropping a 1 1/4-length decision to Medina Spirit. Bred by Ron and Deborah McAnally and trained by John Sadler for Hronis Racing and Talla Racing, Rock Your World retires with a record of 7-3-1-0 and earnings of $612,100.

Rock Your World's dam was a stakes winner and twice placed at Grade I level going long as a 2-year-old and is also responsible for GSP She's Our Charm (Candy Ride {Arg}) and a yearling Curlin colt that fetched $825,000 from D. Hatman Thoroughbreds at this year's Keeneland September sale.

Rock Your World is a maternal grandson of GSW Charm The Giant (Ire) (Giant's Causeway), the dam of GSW Liam the Charmer (Smart Strike), while MGSW/GISP third dam Olympic Charmer (Olympio) also bred MGSP Charming Legacy (Ire) (Danehill), whose daughter Light of Darkness (Red Rocks {Ire}) won this year's G3 Istanbul Trophy in addition to the Turkish 1000 Guineas.

Spendthrift To Stand Rock Your World

Hronis Racing LLC & Talla Racing LLC's Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}–Charm the Maker, by Empire Maker), the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner and morning-line second favorite for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby, will stand at B. Wayne Hughes's Spendthrift Farm at the conclusion of his racing career.

Bred by trainer Ron McAnally and his wife Deborah, Rock Your World was a $650,000 purchase by Sapphire Stable at the 2019 Keeneland September sale before joining the Southern California barn of trainer John Sadler. A debut winner sprinting six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita on New Year's Day, the dark bay rallied to a 2 1/4-length success in the Feb. 27 Pasadena S. Possessed of an each-way pedigree, Rock Your World was given a chance to show what he could do on the dirt in the GI Santa Anita Derby, and he set a strong pace en route to a 4 1/4-length defeat of Medina Spirit (Protonico) before galloping out strongly.

“We are really excited about Rock Your World and thankful to the Hronis family, Michael Talla, and John Sadler for allowing us to be a part of the horse's promising future,” said Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey. “Rock Your World has a wonderful combination of sheer talent, pedigree and sire power, and he's an imposing physical specimen which you would expect from a $650,000 yearling. We were especially taken by the brilliance he displayed in the Santa Anita Derby in his first start on the dirt, and think he has a great shot to show that again in the Kentucky Derby and beyond.”

A full-brother to GSP She's Our Charm, Rock Your World is out of Charm the Maker, a two-time black-type winner who was second in the GI Hollywood Starlet S. and third in the GI Oak Leaf S. as a juvenile. Rock Your World's Grade III-winning second dam Charm the Giant (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) is herself the dam of GSW Liam the Charmer (Smart Strike) and is a daughter of MGSW & GISP Olympic Charmer (Olympio). The last-mentioned is also the dam of MGSP and stakes-producing Charming Legacy (Ire) (Danehill).

“We are excited about of our relationship with Spendthrift Farm on such a special horse like Rock Your World,” said Kosta Hronis of Hronis Racing. “It is hard to argue with the success they've had when it comes to standing premier stallions, and we are hopeful we can accomplish a lot with this colt before we retire him to stud.”

Added Michael Talla: “We are thrilled to have a horse like this. Hopefully, Rock Your World will be the son to carry on the Candy Ride sire line, and I can't think of a better place than Spendthrift for him to get the opportunity to do that.”
