Taiba Adds to Five-Win Day for Baffert in Runhappy Malibu

On a record-setting opening day at Santa Anita, Zedan Racing Stable's Taiba (Gun Runner) earned his third Grade I victory and bolstered his chances for an Eclipse award with a 4 1/4-length victory in the GI Runhappy Malibu S. Monday in Arcadia. The win was the fifth on the card for trainer Bob Baffert, who recorded three graded victories with Fun to Dream (Arrogate) winning the GI La Brea S. and Country Grammer (Tonalist) taking the GII San Antonio S. Baffert was also represented by Faustin (Curlin), who was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following his debut win in the card's fourth race.

“It just shows you the clientele that we have,” Baffert said of the brace of wins. “It is unbelievable, they let us buy these horses and I have a great team and staff. Everyone works hard, and when you are given these horses, you're lucky if you know what to do with them and sometimes you don't.

Baffert wasn't the only one having a good day in the California sunshine, as an on-track crowd of 41,446 produced an all-time opening day record all-sources pari-mutuel handle of more than $26 million.

“I just want to thank all the fans who showed up today,” Baffert said. “It is beautiful when you win with this many people here. Santa Anita is the Great Race Place.”

Taiba, the 2-5 Malibu favorite, tracked pacesetting Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) through fractions of :22.18 and :44.38. He overtook the pacesetter into the stretch and turned for home in tandem with longshot Straight No Chaser (Speightster), who briefly looked a threat. But Taiba put that foe away with a furlong to run and drew away, completing the seven furlongs in 1:21.75 and becoming the only North American 3-year-old with three top-level victories in 2022. Forbidden Kingdom re-rallied for second and Hoist the Gold (Mineshaft) was third.

“That horse is like a bike and you have to pedal,” said winning rider Mike Smith. “Going long, you don't have to do it as much, but I knew that going short it would be tough. Last time he didn't break very well in the Breeders' Cup; he stumbled. I thought, 'If I break through it, I can get in front of the two next to me outside and at least gain third. Right?' Well, I didn't see the outside horse, and I decided not to take a chance and see what he was going to do. Normally, I have to get aggressive with him at that point like I did in Philadelphia, but today that horse actually helped me.”

Baffert aded, “It was a tough Malibu, but turning for home he always looks like he's empty, and he just finds new life. I don't know where he gets it from. He just has more gears and we saw an extra one today.”

Amr Zedan, who is co-owner of Country Grammer, had his second graded win of the day when Taiba strode clear in the Malibu.

Taiba, a $1.7-million purchase at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale, won the GI Santa Anita Derby in just his second start, earning a spot in the GI Kentucky Derby. He was 12th on the first Saturday in May, but had a productive second half of the season, missing by just a head when second to Cyberknife (Gun Runner) in the GI Haskell S. before winning the Sept. 24 GI Pennsylvania Derby. He was most recently third in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

“He's getting better and better,” Baffert said of the almost 4-year-old. “He looked a little heavy in the paddock but that's him. I think he is a lot like his sire, Gun Runner, getting better with age and he needs to go further, it is a little short for him. He has turned in to quite a horse.”

Taiba is one of six Grade I winners for his young sire, Gun Runner. He is the second foal out of his multiple stakes-winning Ohio-bred mare, Needmore Flattery, who sold to Yeguada Centurion while in foal to Uncle Mo for $195,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November sale. Her 2-year-old filly Tita Mimosa (Ire) (Uncle Mo) has been working at Tampa Bay Downs. The mare also has a yearling colt by Waldgeist (GB), who sold for €81,000 at this year's Arqana October sale.

Santa Anita Kicks Off 87th Winter/Spring Season of Racing Monday

Santa Anita Park will launch its annual winter/spring live racing season on Monday with a 11-race card featuring six stakes races, highlighted by the $300,000 GI Runhappy Malibu S., $300,000 GI American Oaks, and $300,000 GI La Brea S., the last three Grade Is of the year in the U.S.

Dubbed this season for the first time as the Classic Meet, racing at Santa Anita will be conducted on a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule through Apr. 9, the exceptions being Monday, Jan. 2 for the New Year's Day holiday, Monday, Jan. 16 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Monday, Feb. 20 for Presidents' Day. After a brief respite in the spring, live racing will return for a 25-day meet Apr. 22, concluding June 18.

The first race on opening day is set for 11:00 a.m. PST. Then post time will be at noon daily through Jan. 8, at 12:30 p.m. PST through Mar. 12 and 1:00 p.m. PST for the remainder of the Classic Meet with the exception of big-race days.

A total of 93 stakes worth $17.5 million, including 10 Grade Is, are on tap during the 3 ½-month meeting. Led by the $750,000 million GI Santa Anita Derby Apr. 8, the 2022-2023 stakes schedule is rich with GI Kentucky Derby prep races and coveted Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying points. These important Triple Crown prep races are the GIII Sham S. on Jan. 8, which is worth 10 points to the winner; the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. on Feb. 5, also worth 10; and GII San Felipe S. on Mar. 4 which guarantees 50 Road to the Kentucky Derby points to the winner. Overall, 11 winners of the Santa Anita Derby–and 18 runners in California's final prep for the Run for the Roses–have gone on to stand in the winner's circle at Churchill Downs reserved for one horse a year in Louisville on the first Saturday in May, the most recent being 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy).

This year, the historic GI Santa Anita H. will be worth $500,000 and the 1 1/4-mile event has been scheduled for Mar. 4. It remains one of the handful of original stakes events contested each year since Santa Anita opened in 1935.

Zedan Racing's Grade I winner and TDN Rising Star Taiba (Gun Runner) will face eight others in the Malibu in his first start since a third-place finish in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic. Should the chestnut colt win, he would become the only 3-year-old male to win three Grade Is in 2022 and give trainer Bob Baffert a fifth Malibu winner, one shy of fellow Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. The $1.7 million FTFMAR 2-year-old purchase also won the Santa Anita Derby in his second start back in April.

Flightline (Tapit) won his first stakes race in last year's Malibu en-route to a likely 2022 Horse of the Year and champion older male Eclipse Awards.

Mandella will send out multiple Grade II winner Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) for the seven-furlong test, while former California-based trainer Wesley Ward will try to take advantage of the lucrative ship-and-win money with recent Keeneland allowance winner Nakatomi (Firing Line).

The Malibu has been carded as the 10th race on the card with a 3:30 p.m. PST post time.

Baffert will tighten the girth on four of eight for the La Brea in seeking a record ninth winner, including GII Zenyatta S. winner Midnight Memories (Mastery), GII Summertime Oaks heroine Under The Stars (Pioneerof the Nile) and Fun To Dream (Arrogate), who won the Betty Grable S. at Del Mar last month. Trainer Rudy Rodriguez shipped GIII Victory Ride S. winner Hot Peppers (Khozan) and her jockey, Tyler Gaffalione, to the Left Coast in what will be her first start in 2 1/2 months. Post time for the La Brea, which is the day's 8th race, is 2:30 p.m. PST.

Anchoring the day's card with a 4:11 p.m. PST post time is the American Oaks, which drew a field of 11 runners from coast to coast. Joining the local contingent set to line up will be two trained by East Coast-based Graham Motion, and one each from Brendan Walsh, Chad Brown and Shug McGaughey. Last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) debuts for Motion after her previous eight-race career in the hands of Christophe Clement. She most recently was a $3.45 million RNA at KEENOV and returns in the colors of celebrity chef Bobby Flay.

Pizza Bianca will join her new stablemate, GIII Valley View S. winner Sparkle Blue (Hard Spun), in the gate, while Walsh will for the first time send out G1 Bet365 Fillies Mile S. winner Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) returning to action off a sixth-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. McGaughey shipped G2 Sands Point S. winner Skims (GB) (Frankel {GB}) to California with the Brown-trained Winter Memories S. winner and TDN Rising Star Salimah (Ire) (El Kabeir) for the 10-furlong turf test.

Other stakes on the Monday card include the $200,000 GIII Santa Anita Mathis Mile, which drew a field of seven turf milers including I'm A Gambler (Ire) (No Nay Never), who sold for a sales-topping $1,076,000 at TATIHA in October to Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal; the $200,000 GII San Gabriel S., a 1 1/8-mile turf test and traditional early prep for the historic GIII San Juan Capistrano S. at the end of the season; and the $200,000 GII San Antonio S., in years past a traditional prep for the Big 'Cap but more recently used as a stepping stone to both the $6 million G1 Dubai World Cup and $20 million G1 Saudi Cup. Last year's Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammer (Tonalist) will have European champion jockey Frankie Dettori back aboard in the 1 1/16-mile test for the first time since the pair teamed up for the win at Meydan nine months ago. Dettori, in his first and likely last winter in California before his retirement from the saddle at the end of 2023, is scheduled to ride five on the Monday card.

Santa Anita Ups Purses in Advance of Dec. 26 Opening

Santa Anita's winter meet, dubbed the 'Classic Race Meeting,' will open on its traditional Dec. 26 date with a new minimum stakes purse of $100,000 for both dirt and turf black-type events. In addition, allowance races will get a boost, with all open allowances set at $85,000 and first- through third-condition allowances run for purses ranging from $72,000 to $76,000. It is the largest purse structure in Santa Anita's 88-year history.

“There's no denying that expenses are up, across the board, in all facets of our economy,” said Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Chris Merz. “Along with the TOC [Thoroughbred Owners of California], without whose assistance these changes wouldn't be possible, we're hopeful these purse increases will assist owners and trainers who are paying the bills on the athletes that put on the show. Additionally, we want horsemen to know that all allowance races will now include a 'state-bred' provision which means any horse that has won a state-bred race anywhere in the country is still eligible for a $72,000 first-condition allowance here at Santa Anita.”

Santa Anita's downhill Camino Real, turf chute, and turf oval are all ready for the meet. “Our turf is in tremendous condition,” said Merz. “With our downhill and turf chute components, we are pleased to offer the betting public and fans alike a cornucopia of turf racing options.”

Six graded races are carded for opening day, including the GI Runhappy Malibu S., the GI La Brea S., and the GI American Oaks. GI Breeders' Cup Classic third Taiba (Gun Runner) will seek his third Grade I win of the year in the Malibu.

“We feel he has a lot of improvement left in him,” said Gary Young, racing manager for owner Amr Zedan. “We have a lot of confidence in this horse. The Malibu provides a good bridge between the Breeders' Cup and next year's Saudi Cup.”

Entries for opening day will be taken Dec. 21. First post is at 11 a.m.

Gun Runner Tops Three Chimneys Stallion Roster

Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg})–the leading sire on the general sire list by percentage of Grade I winners, Grade I horses, graded stakes winners, graded stakes horses, black-type winners and black-type horses from starters–anchors the stallion roster at Three Chimneys Farm, where he will cover mares at a private fee for 2023.

Building on his leading freshman sire campaign in 2021, the 9-year-old is the sire of 11 stakes winners this season, including eight at the graded level and four Grade I scorers, including 'TDN Rising Star' and GI Longines Breeders' Cup third Taiba; GI Arkansas Derby and GI Haskell S. hero Cyberknife, who was just edged in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile over the weekend; and Early Voting, who became his first Classic winner in the GI Preakness S. this past May. Ten of his starters have earned Grade I black-type this term, while no fewer than 25 have been placed at stakes level. Gun Runner is also the leading sire of 3-year-olds, with nearly double the progeny earnings of his next-closest rival. Gun Runner's third-crop yearlings sold for up to $975,000 this year, while eight Gun Runner foals of 2022 have averaged better than $418,000 at this week's breeding stock sales.

Sharp Azteca (Freud), the leading freshman sire of 22 by winners with 30, gets a bump to $15,000 from $5,000 this past year. The fourth-leading member of his crop by progeny earnings, he is the sire of the brilliant Tyler's Tribe, who won his first five trips to the post by a combined 62 lengths and a pair of additional black-type winners.
