McPeek Still Deciding Whether Swiss Skydiver Will Start In Oct. 3 Preakness Stakes

Trainer Ken McPeek has heard the news about Tiz the Law's connections deciding to skip the Oct. 3 Preakness Stakes, but told the Daily Racing Form on Tuesday that he has not yet decided whether his stable's star filly, Kentucky Oaks runner-up Swiss Skydiver, will head to Pimlico.

“The filly has had a really good week,” McPeek told the Daily Racing Form. “There's no need to make any kind of decision just yet. Let's see how she works Saturday and we'll go from there.”

Swiss Skydiver, a 3-year-old daughter of Daredevil, first faced males earlier this summer in the G2 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. She finished second in the July 11 contest, beaten 3 1/2 lengths by fellow Preakness hopeful Art Collector. Since then, Swiss Skydiver posted a 3 1/2-length victory in the G1 Alabama and finished second in the Kentucky Oaks to Shedaresthedevil, beaten 1 1/2 lengths at Churchill.

McPeek said the filly will breeze at Churchill on Saturday, and expects to announce a final decision on Monday.

Other likely Preakness contenders include: Art Collector, Authentic, Mr. Big News, Pneumatic, Thousand Words, Liveyourbeastlife, and Jesus' Team. Potential entries include Mystic Guide, Dr Post, and Happy Saver.

Derby and Oaks Winners Return to the Worktab

GI Kentucky Derby hero Authentic (Into Mischief) and GI Kentucky Oaks victress Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) both returned to the worktab Saturday at Churchill Downs.

GI Preakness S.-bound Authentic covered five panels in :59.20, the fastest of 38 works at the distance. With jockey Martin Garcia aboard, the bay clicked off splits in :23.80 and :35.40, galloping out six furlongs in 1:12.20.

“It went very well. Martin has been with me,” said trainer Bob Baffert, who came to Louisville from the Keeneland Sale in Lexington. “He knows what I expect. I told him we’re going to go three-quarters from the [five-eighths pole], and he just went off, didn’t have to move on him. This horse, he gets over any track. He couldn’t have looked better, coming off a race like that. Everything is all systems go for the Preakness. Got a nice work out of him. I’ll come back, give him an easier work next week and he should be ready to go.”

His stablemate Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile), who was forced to scratch from the Derby after flipping over in the paddock, also breezed Saturday. Florent Geroux was in the irons for the five-panel move in 1:02.40 (26/38). The bay was clocked in splits of :25.80, :8 and :50.60 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.60.

“He’s not a real good work horse,” Baffert said. “I usually have him in company, and today I had him by himself. He’s just a steady kind of horse. Distance is his friend. Flo got to know him today, and I think he’s going to work him back this week. Now he knows the horse a little bit better. But it was fine. I like the way he actually finished up. He started picking it up the last part. I worked him seven-eighths today. That’s him. He’ll never wow you in the mornings. Just steady. He’s funny in that if you try to rush him early, he gets discouraged.”

The incident with Thousand Words in the paddock injured longtime Baffert assistant Jimmy Barns, who required eight screws in his arm.

“But Jimmy is doing fine now,” Baffert said. “He got his arm patched up. He had a great surgeon who patched him up. He’s actually in pretty good spirits.”

With Barnes temporarily out of commission, both Baffert horses have been under the watchful eye of fellow Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas since the Derby. They are scheduled to ship to Baltimore Sept. 29.

Also on the worktab Saturday were Preakness contenders Art Collector (Bernardini) and Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper). A late defection from the Derby with a minor hoof issue, Art Collector breezed five furlongs in :59.40 (2/38) with jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. at the controls. The homebred went in fractions of :12.20, :24.20 and :6 with a five-panel gallop-out in 1:11.60.

“He’s in a great spot right now with his fitness,” trainer Tommy Drury said. “We wanted a bit more of a serious work today and he went well within himself. He’ll have a maintenance work next weekend before we ship to Baltimore.”

GII Jim Dandy S. victor Mystic Guide prepped for a possible start in the Preakness with a half-mile move in :48.60 (2/35) at Fair Hill in company with 2-year-old maiden winner Tate (Quality Road).

“Mystic Guide sat just off of [Tate] breaking from the half-mile pole and he came to him in the stretch and they finished together, which was the planned work,” trainer Mike Stidham said. “Then he had a real solid gallop-out. It was just what we were looking for and we’re very pleased with where we’re at with him right now.”

Oaks upsetter Shedaresthedevil also returned to the worktab at Churchill Saturday, covering a half-mile in :49 flat (40/112). With exercise rider Edvin Vargas aboard, the bay clocked her first quarter in :25.20 and galloped out five-eighths in 1:02. Her champion stablemate Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) also breezed Saturday, going four furlongs in company in :49.60 (70/112). Both fillies are nominated to Keeneland’s GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Oct. 4.

Oaks runner-up Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) was also back to breezing Saturday, going a half-mile in :48 flat (11/112) with Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle. Trainer Ken McPeek tweeted that he is considering the Preakness, Spinster and GI QEII S. on turf for Swiss Skydiver’s next start.

Kentucky Derby Winner Authentic Among Preakness Contenders Breezing At Churchill Downs

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert breezed his two contenders for the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes on Saturday morning at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., with G1 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic given an official clocking of :59.20 for five furlongs – the best of 38 works at the distance – and multiple graded stakes winner Thousand Words going the same distance in 1:02.40.

Also working at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning were G2 Blue Grass Stakes winner Art Collector, clocked one-fifth of a second slower than Authentic in :59.40 under Brian Hernandez Jr., and G1 Alabama Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver, who went a half-mile in :48.00 with jockey Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle.

Thousand Words was scratched from the Derby after flipping in the paddock while being saddled. Art Collector was withdrawn from the race early Derby week after suffering a minor hoof injury. Both, along with Authentic, are on target for the Preakness, to be run at Pimlico race course in Baltimore on Oct. 3. Swiss Skydiver, who was second to Art Collector in the Blue Grass and subsequently second to Shedaresthedevil in the G1 Kentucky Oaks on Sept. 4, is under consideration for the race.

Martin Garcia worked Authentic, a once-beaten Into Mischief colt who gave Baffert a record-tying sixth victory in the Kentucky Derby. Florent Geroux was aboard Thousand Words, a Pioneerof the Nile colt won the Aug. 1 Shared Belief Stakes in his most recent start, defeating the recently retired Honor A. P., the fourth-place Kentucky Derby finisher.

It was the first workout for both horses since the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby.

“Authentic is a big, strong horse and is handling things very well after the Derby,” said Baffert. “I think both horses worked really well this morning.” Baffert, who has been attending the Keeneland September Yearling Sales this past week, plans to return to his home base at Santa Anita in California in the next day or two and has kept his horses in the Churchill Downs barn of his fellow Hall of Famer and friend, D. Wayne Lukas. Baffert said he plans to breeze Thousand Words next Saturday, Sept. 26, and will return to supervise the final Preakness breeze for Authentic on Monday, Sept. 28. Both would then ship to Pimlico on Sept. 29, Baffert said.

Authentic galloped out past the wire, going six furlongs in 1:12.20 and seven-eighths of a mile in 1:25.20 after early fractions of :23.80 and :35.40. Art Collector, a Bernardini colt trained by Tommy Drury Jr., galloped out six furlongs in 1:11.60. He previously breezed a half-mile at Skylight Training Center near Louisville in :48.10 on Sept. 12.

Kenny McPeek, trainer of Swiss Skydiver, indicated to Daily Racing Form's Marty McGee that a Preakness decision for the multiple graded stakes-winning daughter of Daredevil wouldn't be made until the “midnight hour.”

Swiss Skydiver Remains Possible for Preakness

GI Alabama winner Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) remains possible to contest the GI Preakness S. at Pimlico Oct. 3.

“It’s going to depend on who shows up,” said trainer Ken McPeek. “We are also nominating her to the [GI] Spinster [Oct. 4] and she’s been invited to the [GI] QEII [Oct. 10]. We’re shopping it, that’s all. We have three good choices. My strong preference would have been a 3-year-old filly Grade I [on dirt], but there isn’t one out there.”

Both alternatives to the Preakness, the nine-furlong Spinster for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up, and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, a 1 1/8-mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies, will be contested at Keeneland.

Campaigned by Peter Callahan, the chestnut finished second behind Art Collector in the July 11 GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland. Swiss Skydiver also captured the Aug. 21 Alabama at Saratoga and finished second in the Sept. 4 GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

“She’s likes to run, work,” said McPeek. She acts like she wants to do more. She never misses an oat. If she had backed out of the feed tub at any time, we would have spread her races, but she hasn’t done it,” McPeek said. “As long as she’s telling us she wants to do something, we’re going to consider it.”

McPeek indicated that a run in the Preakness would be more likely if Tiz the Law (Constitution), the GI Belmont S. winner who finished second behind Authentic in the Kentucky Derby, should skip this year’s third leg of the Triple Crown.

“We know the two toughies will be Art Collector [Bernardini] and Authentic [Into Mischief],” he said. “They’re both nice horses. We’re just waiting to see who else is going, Right now, we’re undecided. We’re doing the research.”

Swiss Skydiver won the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, GIII Fantasy S. at Oaklawn and GII Santa Anita Oaks earlier this season.
