Ben Curtis banned 14 Days After Breaching COVID-19 Protocols

Jockey Ben Curtis was escorted from Newmarket Friday and will be sidelined for 14 days after breaching COVID-19 protocols. The all-weather champion for the 2019/20 campaign, he currently is fourth in the Flat jockeys’ championship standings.

A British Horseracing Authority spokesperson said Friday, “He will not be permitted to enter a racecourse for 14 days from today as per the published COVID-19 requirements whilst the matter is investigated further.”

Trainer Gary Moore was fined £750 earlier this month after breaching protocols at Goodwood, while Mark Gillard and his assistant Steven Hosie were each handed six-week bans Friday after they were found to have violated the COVID-19 rules at Newbury Aug. 15. They will be unable to attend a racecourse through Sept. 26.

Oisin Murphy to Miss St Leger Meeting

After opting not to appeal a seven-day suspension from Sept. 7-13, Oisin Murphy will miss the Pertemps St Leger Festival at Doncaster (Sept. 9-12). Ayr stewards suspended the rider for careless riding aboard winner Tiritomba in Monday’s Shadwell Stud Maiden S.

“It is going to be difficult to sit a week out, but if the stewards on the day feel I deserve to get a week’s suspension, it is likely the [British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel] will agree with them. I don’t want to waste anyone else’s time or my own time by sitting there on a Zoom call for two and a half hours. Although it is very tough to take, I’ve just got to accept it.”

In regards to the incident, Murphy, who leads this year’s riders’ championship, added, “The horse hung fire and I didn’t pick my stick up and I never took my hands off the reins. There is actually a photo going past the line where it is clearly obvious that the bit has come through his mouth. I don’t have wing mirrors and there was no shout.

“You see me riding every day and I don’t want to get any suspensions.”

Injured Jockey Makes Impassioned Plea For Stricter Careless Riding Penalties

Danny Brereton, 55-year-old former jockey, made an impassioned plea for racing authorities across the world to be tougher on careless riding penalties when speaking to racing.com this week. Brereton suffered a career-ending injury during a race 10 years ago in Australia, and still cannot walk unassisted. “A proper penalty would stop careless riding in its tracks because nobody would risk losing two or three months of their year through suspension,” Brereton told racing.com. “We're not in the days of Ben Hur anymore.”

Current penalties for careless riding in Australia range from a month to six weeks, and the penalties are generally much shorter in the U.S. Brereton believes that stewards are being hamstrung by jockeys' associations. “Stewards can and they would be able to stop careless riding,” Brereton continued. “They can and would be able to stop jockeys being put in wheelchairs but their hands are tied and their hands are tied by the jockeys' association, because they represent riders who have done the wrong thing and discourage stewards from issuing sterner penalties. “They have got the stewards to police it and then they're going in and over the heads of the stewards saying 'don't punish our members' but they've got another rider lying on the track. It's absolutely ridiculous, why are they doing that?” Read more at racing.com.

Oisin Murphy Banned for a Week

Champion jockey Oisin Murphy was suspended for a seven-day period after being found guilty of careless riding at Ayr aboard Tiritomba (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) on Monday. The winning filly appeared to drive across the runner-up Ricksen (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) with Paul Mulrennan in the irons at the finish on Aug. 24. The stewards determined that Murphy “allowed his mount to drift left for a considerable time without sufficient correction causing Mulrennan to take a significant check and clip heels.” Murphy leads in the jockeys’ championship by 18 winners over Tom Marquand.
