Del Mar’s ‘Ship & Win’ Program Expanded

Santa Anita Park and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club have joined forces to expand upon Del Mar's “Ship & Win” program as out-of-state horses, who make their first California-based starts in May and June at Santa Anita, will still be eligible for Del Mar's purse incentives, beginning with their Summer Meet opener July 16. Effective May 1, out-of-state horses can start up to twice at Santa Anita through closing day of the current 2021 Winter/Spring Meet June 20 and still be eligible for Del Mar's Ship & Win program bonuses.

“This is a great enticement to out-of-state owners and horsemen to bring their horses here in advance of Del Mar,” said Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Chris Merz. “People around the country know Santa Anita and Del Mar provide world class training and racing opportunities.  We've very happy the folks at Del Mar and with the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) recognize the importance of this comprehensive approach to attracting new horses.”

Merz added that any new horses participating in the Del Mar 'Ship & Win' program will also be eligible for the Santa Anita Sunshine Bonus, which will again be offered at the track's upcoming Autumn Meet, which opens Oct. 1.

‘Sunshine Bonus’ Attracting Out-Of-State Interest To Santa Anita Meet

With its traditional Winter/Spring opener set for Saturday, Dec. 26, Santa Anita's newly announced Sunshine Bonus program is attracting out-of-state horses as trainers and horseman also consider a 10 percent raise in overnight purses which will enable The Great Race Place to distribute $533,000 on a daily basis.

The Sunshine Bonus, which provides several significant incentives, including an immediate payment of $3,000 to the owner of any eligible horse making their first start at Santa Anita, has garnered the attention of horsemen nationwide.

“We're getting more and more interest from people out of state,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita's Director of Racing. “Robert Falcone, Jr., who is based in New York, was here a couple of years ago and he's here again with a string of horses. With our new turf chute and the overall course in pristine condition, we're going to be able to offer the best wintertime turf racing in North American, without question. Additionally, when you look at the 10 percent increase in overnight purses and the very significant added money provided by the Sunshine Bonus program, people are thinking about us like maybe they haven't in many years now. We're very encouraged.”

Falcone, Jr., who first came to Southern California for the 2017 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar with Mind Your Biscuits while an assistant to Chad Summers, is excited to be back in Arcadia.

“I've got 25 horses, mainly claiming horses, a few allowance and a couple stakes horses that we've brought out from Belmont Park,” he said. “A lot of factors went into making the move. This is a nice environment and the people here are very accommodating. Obviously, the Sunshine Bonus is very important and with the 10 percent increase in overnight purses, we realized the purses this winter at Santa Anita are a little better than at Gulfstream. We had a great experience when we came out here with Mind Your Biscuits and when he won the Malibu that year (2017), it was just tremendous and we ended up having a very successful winter.

“This is an unbelievable place to train horses and with the new turf chute, the grass racing is going to give us a lot of options. To be honest, I felt like I really wanted to help the program here. Santa Anita has been through so much and now, it looks like everything is going in the right direction. The changes that have been made can be difficult at times, but this new approach is what's needed in this game.”

In addition to providing a $3,000 starter's bonus to eligible out-of-state horses, Santa Anita's Sunshine Bonus will also award a 35 percent bonus, above regular purse money-won, to eligible horses in their first five Santa Anita starts.

Santa Anita To Introduce ‘Sunshine Bonus’

In an effort to attract out-of-state horses to run at its winter/spring meet, officials at Santa Anita have announced the introduction of the ‘Sunshine Bonus.’ The bonus offers $3,000 of guaranteed money paid to the owners of eligible horses making their first starts at Santa Anita, excluding stakes races and debuting horses.

“Along with the 10% raise in our average daily purse distribution–which now totals  $533,000–we’re hopeful this new Sunshine Bonus program will help to attract horses that have not run in California over the past 12 months,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita’s Director of Racing. “This is a very significant enticement to train and race at what we believe is a magnificent year-round facility.”

Merz added that sizeable bonuses will also be paid to those same horses depending on where they finish in their first starts at Santa Anita.

“Excluding stakes and first-time starters, the Sunshine Bonus will also offer a 35% bonus to the owners of those horses finishing first through fifth in their first starts here,” Merz explained. “So for instance, if a horse ships in and wins a $61,000 maiden special weight race, the owner will not only receive the standard winner’s share of $36,600, [they will] get the first time Santa Anita starter bonus of $3,000 as well as the 35%.

“This adds up to total money-won of $52,410 in a $61,000 race. The numbers speak for themselves and we’re hoping horsemen nationwide will take this into account when they consider sending horses here this winter and spring.”
