Stay Hot Rebounds Off Breeders’ Cup Loss To Take Cecil B. DeMille

Stay Hot rebounded from a 10th-place effort in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf with a late-flying victory in the GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. at Del Mar Sunday. The bay ridgling taken in hand and angled over from his outside post to be three wide into the first turn and was near the back of the field through an opening quarter in :22.00. The field bunched up approaching the far turn as the half went up in :46.30 and Stay Hot was last on the bend before darting into contention and coming some eight wide into the stretch. He uncorked a powerful late kick to just get in front in the final strides.

“I thought he'd be a little more forwardly placed,” admitted winning trainer Peter Eurton. “As it turned out that nine hole was a little bit of a detriment, but it also helped him get outside, which is probably more comfortable.”

Of his charge's wide rally into the stretch, Eurton said, “That was hard to take, but he seemed like he had something left and it was a fight to the wire. I'm exhausted.”

Stay Hot opened his career with two six-furlong efforts over the main track at Del Mar, finishing third Aug. 5 and sixth Sept. 2. He moved to the lawn for a stylish maiden win over one mile at Santa Anita Oct. 7 and was thrown into the deep end when beaten 5 1/2 lengths a month ago on Breeders' Cup weekend in Arcadia.

Pedigree Notes:

Stay Hot is the fifth graded winner for Airdrie stallion Summer Front (War Front). His half-sister Prerequisite (Upstart) won this year's GII Wonder Again S. and was second in the GI Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational. Etsu has a yearling colt by Complexity who sold to Greg Foley for $95,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton October sale. The mare produced a colt by Upstart this year and was not bred back. The winner's third dam, Fly North, produced champion Farda Amiga (Broad Brush).

Goldencents Colt Breaks Maiden In Style At Churchill

4th-Churchill Downs, $121,125, Msw, 11-12, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:03.27, ft, 7 3/4 lengths.
MYSTIK DAN (c, 2, Goldencents–Ma'am, by Colonel John) broke quickly in his debut Oct. 22 at Keeneland, but lost the lead down the lane to finish second. Tabbed as the 4-5 choice here, the bay colt tracked the pacesetter from second up the backstretch. Making his move to the outside around the far turn, the Ken McPeek trainee built up a head of steam and really poured it on to win by 7 3/4 lengths over Eusebius (City of Light). Out of an extended female family which includes MGSW Summer Front (War Front) and his half-sister GISW Laragh (Tapit), the winner's dam is responsible for a yearling filly named Yes Ma'am (Unified) and foaled filly Apr. 2 Ford's Ma'am (Knicks Go). She was not bred for next year. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $87,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

Girvin and Upstart Lead the Way at Airdrie on 2024 Roster

Girvin, the sire of three graded stakes winners including GI winner Faiza, and Upstart, the sire of GI Bluegrass winner Zandon, will both stand for a stud fee of $30,000 at Airdrie Farm in Midway Kentucky for the 2024 season, Airdrie announced Wednesday.

“We couldn't be looking more forward to the 2024 season as we continue to build momentum in our stallion barn,” said Airdrie's Bret Jones. “We believe we have two very special stallions in Girvin and Upstart headlining our roster this year. Both have built their success from the ground up, and their ability to so dramatically improve their mares has earned the faith of the best breeders in the industry. They are both poised to continue to climb the ladder as leading young stallions.”

Girvin has been given a $5,000 bump for 2024, while Upstart's fee remains the same as his 2023 fee.

Cairo Prince will stand for $15,000, the same as his 2023 fee.

Cairo Prince has once again been the leading sire of his stallion crop and a Top 25 General and Juvenile Sire throughout the year,” said Jones. “He has long cemented his position as a hugely popular value stallion for both the sales ring and the racetrack.”

Collected, who currently has two crops on the track, will remain at $10,000.

“With his first crop just three-year-olds, Collected has already sired three individual Grade II stakes winners and six stakes winners in all,” Jones continued. “That is an incredibly strong resume for a young stallion in his price range and we believe his arrow will continue to point up in the year ahead. And we also believe Complexity ($12,500) has every chance to be next season's leading freshman sire. He was an immensely talented runner and his first-crop yearlings generated the type of buzz at the sales that foreshadows major success on the racetrack.”

“When combined with our new introductions of the last two years in Beau Liam, Happy Saver and Highly Motivated and the future retirement of Kentucky Derby winner Mage at the end of his racing career, these are very exciting times for our Airdrie Stud team. As always, we will be supporting our stallions with the full force of our broodmare band and look forward to working with our incredibly loyal breeders to whom we owe our success.”

The complete roster, with fees, is:

Girvin – $30,000

Upstart – $30,000

Cairo Prince – $15,000

Complexity – $12,500

Collected – $10,000

Happy Saver – $10,000

Highly Motivated – $7,500

Beau Liam – $6,000

Divisidero – $5,000

Preservationist – $5,000

Summer Front – $5,000

Summer Front’s Wow Whata Summer Upsets Penn Mile

Wow Whata Summer sprung the second biggest upset of the year so far when he crossed the finish line in front for the first time, besting previously undefeated 'TDN Rising Star' Annapolis at odds of 83-1 in the GII Penn Mile S. Uncaptured Spirit (Uncaptured) hustled up to take immediate control with heavily favored Annapolis dueling another foe two lengths back in second and Wow Whata Summer engaged in a three-battle off their heels. Wow Whata Summer moved up inside the chalk as the first quarter went up in :24.08 as the pacesetter continued to enjoy a comfortable lead.

An overeager Wow Whata Summer tugged his way up to pressure the leader, sticking his nose in front as the half went in :49.50 as Annapolis continued to bide his time. Wow Whata Summer kicked clear turning for home as Irad Ortiz began to call upon the favorite. Annapolis bore out a bit in early stretch, giving up some ground, but Ortiz quickly righted the ship and sent his mount after the longshot leader, but Wow Whata Summer kept on finding, holding Annapolis at bay by 1 1/4 lengths.

Placed first via DQ in his unveiling at Colonial in July, Wow Whata Summer checked in third in the Hickory Tree S. there a month later and was fourth in that venue's Kitten's Joy S. four weeks after that. Checking in fourth again in the Laurel Futurity S. Oct. 2, he was a soundly beaten ninth when trying dirt in a Laurel optional claimer Nov. 21. Returning to the grass in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance at Laurel Apr. 23, the dark bay rallied from well back to be third behind the re-opposing Uncaptured Spirit.

Pedigree Notes:
Wow Whata Summer is the fourth graded winner for his young sire Summer Front. His dam Loan Guarantee is a half to SW Strong Incentive (Warrior's Reward), who is the dam of SW & MGSP Highly Motivated (Into Mischief), who captured a Belmont allowance over Memorial Day weekend. Loan Guarantee is also responsible for a 2-year-old filly named Cherished Wish (Mshawish) and a yearling colt named Wow Whata Party (Desert Party).
