Mystic Guide ‘An Absolute Picture’ Ahead Of July 3 Suburban

Trainer Mike Stidham will have a number of stakes contenders for the Independence Day weekend cards at Belmont Park, led by Mystic Guide in the Grade 2, $400,000 Suburban at 10 furlongs for 4-year-olds and up on Saturday, July 3.

The Independence Day slates run July 3 through Monday, July 5 offering six stakes races including a pair of Breeders' Cup Win and You're In qualifiers led by the Grade 2, Suburban [Classic] and the Grade 2, $250,000 John A. Nerud [Sprint], which will see 4-year-olds and up contest at seven furlongs on July 4.

The holiday weekend kicks off July 3 with the $100,000 Perfect Sting and continues on July 4 with the $100,000 Manila, while the Grade 3, $250,000 Dwyer anchors a Monday, July 5 card that also offers the $150,000 Grand Couturier.

In addition to Mystic Guide, Stidham will also be represented by Princess Grace in the Perfect Sting with Gershwin possible for the Grade 3 Dwyer.

Godolphin homebred Mystic Guide, the No. 1 ranked horse in the NTRA Thoroughbred Poll, will be making his first appearance since capturing the Group 1 Dubai World Cup on March 27 at Meydan.

Mystic Guide, a 4-year-old Ghostzapper colt, has worked six times at Fair Hill since returning to North America, including a six-furlong effort in 1:13.20 on June 19.

“He's doing fantastic. He's had multiple works here at Fair Hill and his final work for the race will be tomorrow,” said Stidham. “We'll ship to New York for Friday morning so we can school him in the paddock before the race.”

Mystic Guide made the grade in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy in September at Saratoga Race Course and followed with a runner-up effort to Suburban rival Happy Saver in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on October 10 at Belmont.

Leaving from the outside post under Hall of Famer John Velazquez in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Mystic Guide tracked in third outside of Happy Saver, piloted by Irad Ortiz, Jr., as Tacitus, with Jose Ortiz up, led the field down the backstretch through an easy half-mile in 49.68 seconds.

Mystic Guide moved outside of the pacesetter late in the turn as Happy Saver waited for racing room behind rivals that finally emerged when Tacitus came off the rail on the turn for home. Mystic Guide put a nose in front inside the final eighth, but Happy Saver squeezed up the rail and powered home to a three-quarter length score.

“The Jim Dandy was the beginning of him starting to put it all together,” said Stidham. “I thought he was unlucky in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. It was a cat and mouse game that day with the two Ortiz brothers and Johnny sitting outside of them and then magically the rail opened up for Happy Saver. We were unlucky to lose that race.”

Mystic Guide, who has paired with Belmont Stakes-winning rider Luis Saez for his two starts this season, opened his current campaign in impressive fashion with a six-length win in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap on a sloppy track on February 27 at Oaklawn Park, garnering a career-best 108 Beyer Speed Figure.

“Obviously, we don't really know how much the sloppy track played into that number. He came back in the Dubai World Cup and made the number look like it was real, which was good,” said Stidham. “We've given him plenty of time and he's had three months since that race to bounce back. Looking at him train and his weight and his coat, he's an absolute picture right now.”

Stidham said Godolphin homebred Gershwin – a 3-year-old half-brother to Mystic Guide by Distorted Humor – is possible for the Dwyer with a number of races also under consideration, including the 1 1/16-miles $250,000 Iowa Derby on July 2 and the 1 1/16-miles Grade 3, $300,000 Indiana Derby on July 7.

“We're considering the Dwyer, but we also have our eye on the Iowa Derby and Indiana Derby, too,” said Stidham.

Stidham said that while both siblings are chestnuts, they demonstrate very distinct differences in personality.

“Mystic Guide is a little bigger and stronger in stature and he's much tougher; a real man,” said Stidham. “Whereas Gershwin is easier to handle and not as strong and tough as Mystic Guide is. They're similar in looks, though.”

The well-bred Gershwin has seen 3-of-5 career starts washed off the turf, including a last out score in the Grade 3 Penn Mile on May 28 at Penn National.

“We've felt like there's more to him than what we've seen from a numbers standpoint,” said Stidham. “He's almost like Mystic Guide in that he's taking time to develop and the only reason we were thinking of grass is that we hadn't seen what we were hoping to see from him on dirt up to this point.

“He did well to win the Grade 3,” continued Stidham. “Even though it was off the turf, you start thinking maybe he is fine on the dirt and just taking time to really breakthrough and come up with a big number. That's why we're content to continue on with the dirt.”

Susan and John Moore's Princess Grace will make her seasonal debut in the Perfect Sting, a one-mile turf test for older fillies and mares.

The 4-year-old daughter or Karakontie won 3-of-4 starts last season, topped by a win in the off-the-turf Grade 2 Mrs. Revere in November at Churchill Downs to close out her campaign.

“She's coming off a layup but she's been training really well and we're looking to get her starting back,” said Stidham. “I had no clue what to think when we stayed in the off-the-turf that day and she went out and ran a huge race.”

Princess Grace is out of the Silent Name mare Masquerade, who was also campaigned by Stidham and posted wins on dirt, synthetic and turf through a career ledger of 28-6-8-2.

“It looks like Princess Grace could do both surfaces but we'll stay with the turf,” said Stidham. “We trained her mother and she was an ultra-consistent horse, but I think she was better on turf, too.”

Stidham said Princess Grace, who earned a career-best 88 Beyer with a runner-up effort in the Grade 3 Valley View in October at Keeneland, could be special.

“She gives you that indication,” said Stidham. “She's a small, feminine looking filly but she runs huge in her races and everything she does is game and all heart. Those kind don't have to be big and powerful, they just have what it takes inside and she seems to have that.”

New York-Bred Veteran Mr. Buff Stretching Out For Suburban Try

Chester and Mary Broman's multiple stakes-winning millionaire Mr. Buff will try 1 1/4-miles for the first time in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Suburban at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Trained by John Kimmel, the 6-year-old New York-bred son of Friend Or Foe has posted wins from seven furlongs up to a mile an eighth in a 37-race career that boasts eight stakes wins from an overall record of 14-7-4 and purse earnings of $1,076,536.

The sizable chestnut was in a good run of form over the winter at Aqueduct with scores in the Alex M. Robb, Jazil and Haynesfield before his training was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned off a four-month layoff last out to finish second to Funny Guy in the one-turn mile Commentator on June 12 at Belmont.

“He was rolling until they shut things down here. He missed a month of training,” said Kimmel. “He walked for a month at the farm and he didn't have the bottom into him that Funny Guy did, not to mention he carried 127 pounds. I thought he was going to get swallowed up, but he actually hung in there really well.”

Mr. Buff matched a career-best 106 Beyer Speed Figure with his 20-length score in the Haynesfield on February 22 when left alone on the front end under regular pilot Junior Alvarado.

That effort came on the heels of a similarly powerful score in the open Jazil at nine furlongs. Kimmel has tried Mr. Buff in graded company twice when off-the-board in the Grade 2 New Orleans on a track he didn't handle and was seventh last summer in the Grade 1 Woodward at Saratoga.

On Saturday, the 17.2 hands tall Mr. Buff will have a significant weight break carrying just 118 pounds against a field headlined by 2019 Grade 1 Belmont Stakes champ Sir Winston [124 pounds] and multiple graded-stakes winner Tacitus [122 pounds].

Kimmel said the added distance may help Mr. Buff ease into his significant stride.

“I contemplated running him a little further if I had the chance and this looked like the right opportunity,” said Kimmel. “A mile and a quarter will have a much more reasonable pace scenario and maybe he won't have any issued with his lead transitions like he does sometimes at a flat mile and the pace is a little faster.

“When he gets going 45 to the half and three quarters in 10 and change, sometimes he doesn't make that switch to his outside lead,” added Kimmel. “But he's been pretty good at it when he goes around two turns, so we'll see how he does at one and a half turns.”

Mr. Buff will exit post 4 under Alvarado in the Suburban which will close out Saturday's 11-race card.

‘Happy Horse’ Sir Winston, Consistent Tacitus Renew Rivalry In Suburban

Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Suburban, a 1 1/4-mile test on Big Sandy, will feature the one-two-three finishers of last year's Grade 1 Belmont Stakes as Sir Winston, Tacitus and Joevia renew their rivalry on Runhappy Met Mile Day at Belmont Park.

The Suburban, a 10-furlong test for 4-year-olds and upward is one of five graded stakes on a loaded card headlined by the Grade 1 Runhappy Met Mile, open to 3-year-olds and up, offering a berth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile; along with the Grade 1, $400,000 Manhattan for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/4-miles on turf; the Grade 3, $150,000 Poker, a one-mile turf test for older horses; and the Grade 3, $100,000 Victory Ride, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for sophomore fillies.

Tracy Farmer's Sir Winston, trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, was a 10-1 upset winner of the 2019 Belmont Stakes. The Awesome Again chestnut, out of the Afleet Alex mare La Gran Bailadora, rallied from eighth in the “Test of the Champion” to outkick Tacitus for a one-length win.

Sir Winston made a successful seasonal debut with a 2 ¼-length score in an optional-claiming mile at Aqueduct Racetrack on January 31. After traveling for the Dubai World Cup, which was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Sir Winston made his belated return on June 11 on a sloppy Belmont strip in the 1 3/8-mile Flat Out, running second by 5 ¼-lengths to Suburban rival Moretti.

Casse said the Flat Out effort was deceptively good.

“It was a lot to ask of him. There was no speed in the race and the sloppy track probably didn't help us either,” said Casse. “He got a little tired, but he showed gameness to even run second. I think he'll run really well.”

Casse said the colt, who breezed a half-mile in 50.78 seconds on June 26 on Big Sandy, got a lot out of the Flat Out effort and is coming into Saturday's test in good order.

“I think he got a lot out of it,” said Casse regarding the Flat Out. “My biggest concern is that he got too much out of it. He came back and worked well. He's a happy horse and he loves Belmont.”

Joel Rosario, aboard for the Belmont Stakes score, will have the call from post 6.

Juddmonte Farms' homebred Tacitus, a 4-year-old colt by Tapit and out of the Eclipse Award-winning mare Close Hatches, enjoyed a productive sophomore season posting a record of 7-2-3-2 with purse earnings of $1,634,500.

Following Grade 2 wins in the Tampa Bay Derby and Wood Memorial at the Big A for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, Tacitus rallied from 16th in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby en route to being elevated to third. The ultra-consistent Tacitus followed up his Derby effort by completing the exacta in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes and winning both the Grade 2 Jim Dandy and Grade 1 Runhappy Travers at Saratoga. He completed a lengthy campaign with a third in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup in September travelling 1 ¼-miles on Big Sandy.

The Suburban will mark the third start of the season for Tacitus following a fifth in the Group 1 Saudi Cup in February and a fourth in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap on May 2.

Hall of Famer John Velazquez retains the mount from the inside post.

Michael Fazio and Jeff Fazio's Joevia set the pace en route to a strong third in the 2019 Belmont Stakes. Trained by Gregg Sacco, the Shanghai Bobby colt captured the Long Branch at Monmouth Park in a productive 3-year-old campaign.

After winning his seasonal debut in January in an optional-claiming sprint at the Big A, Joevia posted a pair of off-the-board efforts in the Grade 3 Razorback in February at Oaklawn and the Stymie in March at Aqueduct.

Joevia then underwent surgery to correct a breathing issue and was subsequently fourth last out in the Grade 3 Westchester off a three-month layoff.
Joevia will emerge from post 5 under Jose Ortiz.

Repole Stable and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Moretti, trained by Todd Pletcher, secured his first stakes score last out in the Flat Out with a frontrunning performance under Hall of Famer Javier Castellano.

The 4-year-old Medaglia d'Oro colt graduated at second asking at Aqueduct in December 2018 and waited until May to secure his second career score when rallying from off-the-pace in an Oaklawn Park allowance route ahead of his Flat Out coup.

Bred in Kentucky by Thoro-Bred Stables, Moretti is out of the Grade 1-winning Concerto broodmare Rigoletta who also produced Grade 1-winning millionaire Battle of Midway. He was purchased for $900,000 from the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale

Moretti will emerge from post 8 with Castellano.

Chester and Mary Broman's New York-bred millionaire Mr. Buff will look to start another winning streak. The sizable 6-year-old Friend or Foe gelding enjoyed a three-race win streak from December to February at the Big A with scores in the Alex M. Robb, Jazil and capped by a 20-length romp in the Haynesfield.

Last out, when second in the restricted Commentator at Belmont on June 12, Mr. Buff bobbled at the start of the one-turn mile and chased the early speed of Blewitt, but could not hold off the late charge of Funny Guy.

He will exit post 4 under Junior Alvarado, who previously won the Suburban with Flat Out [2013], Effinex [2015] and last year aboard Preservationist.

Rounding out the field are Parsimony [Kendrick Carmouche, post 2], Forewarned [Manny Franco, post 3] and Just Whistle [Irad Ortiz, Jr., post 7].

Slated as the closing event at 6:51 p.m. Eastern on Saturday's 11-race card, which offers a first post of 1:15 p.m., the Suburban will feature live on America's Day at the Races, produced by NYRA in partnership with FOX Sports, and airing live on Fox Sports and MSG+.

America's Day at the Races will offer live coverage of Belmont Park stakes action from 1 – 5 p.m. and from 6 – 7 p.m. on FS1. NBC will provide live coverage of the Runhappy Met Mile from 5 – 6 p.m. Free Equibase-provided past performances are available for races that are part of the America's Day at the Races broadcast and can be accessed at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/tv-schedule.
