Quality Road Anchors Lane’s End Roster for 2022

Quality Road (Elusive Quality–Kobla, by Strawberry Road {Aus}), whose 'TDN Rising Star' son Corniche figures one of the favorites for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Nov. 5, will remain at $150,000 for the upcoming breeding season at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm, which released its stud fees Monday.

The 15-year-old stallion is in the midst of another outstanding season, with nine stakes winners to his credit. Three of those have come at the graded level, led by the aforementioned Corniche, who topped this year's OBS April Sale on a bid of $1.5 million from Peter Fluor and K.C. Weiner's Speedway Stable and ran his record to two wins from two starts with a 3 1/4-length victory in the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita Oct. 1. Astronaut upset the GII Del Mar H. and is a candidate for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, while Dr Post impressed in the GIII Monmouth Cup while also placing in the GI TVG Pacific Classic and GI Woodward S.

Quality Road was the leading sire by average (more than one sold) at this year's bell-weather Keeneland September Sale, his 34 yearlings fetching an average of $472,794. Immediately behind Quality Road were Curlin and Into Mischief. Quality Road was represented by two seven-figure sellers at KEESEP, led by a $1.6 million half-brother to GSW & MGISP Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) and GISW Girvin (Tale of Ekati) that was hammered down to Woodford Racing & West Point Thoroughbreds. He was also represented by a $1-million half-sister to GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga.

The first crop of Quality Road's son City of Light has met with tremendous reception. The 7-year-old is the second-leading freshman sire of yearlings behind only Justify and he was responsible for the overall Keeneland September topper, a $1.7-million son of MSP Anchorage (Tapit) that was purchased by Woodford, West Point and Talla Racing. City of Light gets a bump from $40,000 up to $60,000 for 2022.

New to the Lane's End roster for 2022 is Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}), whose stud fee has yet to be set.

Gainesway’s 2022 Roster Led by Tapit

Gainesway's perennial leading sire Tapit (Pulpit–Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled) will once again head the farm's stallion roster and stud fees for the upcoming 2022 season. Tapit will remain at $185,000 live foal, stands and nurses. Currently among the top five North American stallions on the leading sires list of 2021, Tapit has three year-end leading sire titles and is North America's leading sire of Grade I winners with 27, Grade I performers with 58, graded stakes winners with 92, graded stakes horses with 177, and stakes performers with 284. Tapit leads all active sires in nearly every category, including progeny earnings of more than $175 million, which makes him the richest American stallion in history. He continues to scale new heights, with a record-tying fourth GI Belmont S. win this summer by 'TDN Rising Star' Essential Quality, who will be among the favorites in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

Four-time Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense–Runway Model, by Petionville), who bred 214 mares in his first book in 2021, will also hold at his fee of $30,000 for 2022. McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures–more than 60% of his career starts-and won Grade I races at two, three, and four.

Also slated to see his first foals in 2022 is GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run (Hard Spun–Yawkey Way, by Grand Slam), who gets a fee reduction from $12,500 in 2021 to $10,000 in 2022.

Previously announced as new to Gainesway for 2022 is MGISW Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley), who will make his final career start in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Mile. He will stand for $10,000.

Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein–Sun Is Up, by Sunday Silence), one of the top third-crop sires by percentage of stakes winners and graded stakes winners, will stand for $10,000 and will be joined in the Gainesway barn by two sons of Tapit in Tapwrit (Tapit–Appealing Zophie, by Successful Appeal) and Anchor Down (Tapit–Successful Outlook, by Orientate). Tapwrit, a $1.2-million yearling and GI Belmont S. winner, will have his first crop of 2-year-olds in 2022. Nearly 20% of his first-crop yearlings brought 10x his 2021 stud fee. Tapwrit will stand for $10,000. With his first crop of 3-year-olds this year, Anchor Down has 14% stakes horses and will stand for $5,000. Veteran Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet–Maggy Hawk, by Hawkster), who stands for a private fee, rounds out the Gainesway roster.

Hill ‘n’ Dale ’22 Stud Fees led by Curlin

The roster and fees for Hill 'n' Dale Farm's 2022 season is led by the nation's leading sire in number of Grade I winners, dual Horse of the Year Curlin (Smart Strike–Sheriff's Deputy, by Deputy Minister). He will return in 2022 for a fee of $175,000 LFSN. Also remaining unchanged is fellow Horse of the Year Ghostzapper (Awesome Again–Baby Zip, by Relaunch). The Hall of Famer will stand for $75,000 LFSN in 2022.

Included among the operation's up-and-coming sires, Good Magic (Curlin–Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun), whose fee also remains unchanged for 2022, will stand his second season for $30,000 LFSN. The 2017 champion juvenile's initial crop of yearlings was led by a $775,000 colt at Keeneland September. Joining Hill 'n' Dale's roster at the stallion complex at Xalapa is dual Grade I winning Charlatan (Speightstown–Authenticity, by Quiet American). A winner of over $4 million in earnings, the chestnut will stand his first season at stud for $50,000 LFSN. Also standing for $50,000 LFSN in 2022: Turf champion Kitten's Joy (El Prado {Ire}–Kitten's First, by Lear Fan) and Maclean's Music (Distorted Humor–Forest Music, by Unbridled's Song), sire of Grade I winner Jackie's Warrior, among the early favorites to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. Grade I winner Violence (Medaglia d'Oro–Violent Beauty, by Gone West) will stand for $25,000 LFSN next season.

Spendthrift Farm Announces 2022 Fees: Into Mischief At $250,000; Yaupon Enters Stud At $30,000

Spendthrift Farm has announced stud fees for its roster of 25 stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm for the upcoming 2022 breeding season, led again by North America's reigning two-time champion General Sire, Into Mischief who will stand for $250,000 S&N.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions for 2022 including recently retired Grade 1 winners Basin, Known Agenda and Yaupon, along with multi-millionaire By My Standards who remains in training through the end of the racing season.

“It is important to us that we continue to offer breeders both quality and value at all levels of the market, and we believe our 2022 stallion roster and fees reflect that,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “We are very encouraged by a lot of positive indicators in the commercial yearling market, including strong sales numbers and high clearance rates. There has been good health at the sales, and breeders have had the chance to make money. Our aim is to provide opportunity for every breeder so that he or she can have confidence in being rewarded by the quality and value we offer.”

Yaupon, winner of last month's Forego S. (G1) at Saratoga, heads the new stallions with an introductory fee of $30,000 S&N. The Uncle Mo colt recently retired with earnings of $703,264. Known Agenda, this year's Florida Derby (G1) winner by Curlin, will stand for $10,000 S&N, and Basin, winner of the Hopeful S. (G1) at two, will stand for $7,500 S&N. A fee for By My Standards will be set upon retirement.

Popular second-season sire Authentic, the reigning Horse of the Year by Into Mischief, will stand for $70,000 S&N in 2022, down slightly from his introductory fee. Omaha Beach joins Yaupon at $30,000, also down slightly from the previous breeding season.

Bolt d'Oro, whose first yearlings have been well-received this summer to the tune of a $179,757 sales average, will see a slight increase in his fee to $20,000 S&N. Vino Rosso, the 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero and champion by Curlin, will also stand for $20,000 S&N, down slightly for his third season at stud.

Spendthrift's stallions under $20,000 are led by multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma who will stand his second season at stud for a reduced fee of $17,500 S&N. Emerging sire Goldencents and champion Mitole both remain at $15,000 S&N, and Jimmy Creed and Lord Nelson both remain at $10,000 S&N.

Three stallions will participate in Spendthrift's “Safe Bet” program in 2022, including Cloud Computing ($5,000), Free Drop Billy ($5,000) and Mor Spirit ($5,000). All three will have their first respective 2-year-olds hitting the track, and the program ensures them siring a graded stakes winner in 2022 or no stud fee is owed for that respective stallion.

Spendthrift is planning for open houses to return, starting during the Fasig-Tipton October sale. Stallions are also available for inspection upon appointment from 1-3pm most days.
