Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale Starts Monday

TIMONIUM, MD – A yearling sale season punctuated by strong demand throughout the market makes a stop in Maryland when the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale begins its two-day run in Timonium Monday afternoon. With 200 yearlings catalogued, the abbreviated first session of the auction gets underway at 1 p.m. A further 314 yearlings are catalogued for the second session, which begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Ahead of the sale, a mixture of end-users, pinhookers and bloodstock agents were on the grounds on a balmy fall day at the Maryland State Fairgrounds Sunday.

“I think the traffic has been pretty good,” David Hayden, whose Dark Hollow consignment in Barn A is a first stop from the parking lot for many prospective buyers. “Yesterday was the busiest Saturday we've ever had here. So that was very helpful. We started at 8 a.m. this morning and the action ebbs and flows.”

The Dark Hollow consignment consists of 10 Maryland homebred yearlings. Hayden said the Maryland program offers buyers plenty of rewards.

“We have been doing this for 40 years,” Hayden said of the Dark Hollow operation. “We've bred 65 stakes winners and 25 graded stakes horses, 15 graded stakes winners. I think we are in really great shape with the owner bonuses, the breeder bonuses. In our case, if we keep a horse–we have seven in training right now–we are looking at, between being Virginia certified and all the other stuff, we are looking at 65% bonus money. It keeps you in the game.”

For Stuart Morris, the Midlantic sale is another stop on a busy fall schedule of auctions and the consignor is hoping the strong demand for horses that has been seen at sales from Kentucky to New York, to Texas and to California continues in Maryland.

“We sure hope the momentum continues,” Morris said. “I have 172 [yearlings to sell] this month in four states, so I am really hoping it continues. I'm trying to ride that wave. That Keeneland sale was so electric, I don't know that we can ever expect any sale again to be that good. I think it was a seminal moment in our industry, to be honest with you. I think it's unfair to compare any sale to that one, at least for a while. But I think the momentum is good and the energy is up. The sale in Texas this year was way up and California was great. It feels like it's a good time to be in our industry selling horses and playing the game again.”

Bill Reightler, who will offer 42 yearlings during the two-day Midlantic auction, is expecting to familiar trends in Timonium this week.

“It's going to be polarized, but it's going to be a good sale for the right horse, for the horses that the buyers perceive as quality and vets well,” Reightler said.

Of activity at the sales barns, Reightler said, “Traffic has been good. We have 42 in the consignment and yesterday we showed 650 times and with 11 all-shows. So it was good. I think we showed a little more last year, but the sale doesn't start until 1 p.m. on Monday, so I am sure more people are still coming. There seem to be a fair amount of people that are looking for a good racehorse. And I have heard a lot of those people who like to stay in the six-figure range got shut out [at other sales] and they are coming here.”

During last year's Midlantic sale, held during the pre-vaccination pandemic, 379 yearlings sold for $9,120,700 for an average of $24,065 and a median of $14,000. The sale was topped by a $270,000 son of Gun Runner, who was one of 11 to bring six figures at the auction.

Fasig-Tipton Adds Broodmare Dispersal To Upcoming July Sales; Will Accept Additional Breeding Stock Entries

Fasig-Tipton has added a breeding stock dispersal to its upcoming July sales schedule in Lexington, Kentucky.

The company will offer 18 mares as part of the Far From Over/Fountain of Youth Dispersal, with consignor Stuart Morris acting as agent for the dispersal.

The group of mares are property of a partnership supporting young stallion Far From Over. The graded stakes-winning son of Blame, out of Alchemist, had been standing at stud in California before suffering a pelvis injury early in this year's breeding season that took him out of service for 2021. The remainder of the mares that were not bred to him were then shipped back to Kentucky and bred to Kentucky stallions, and due to the circumstances, the partnership has opted to disperse all its of holdings.

All mares offered are in foal to Connect, Far From Over, or Violence. They will be sold with their 2021 foals at their sides, which are by Catalina Cruiser, Enticed, Good Magic, Honor Code, Laoban, Oscar Performance, Violence, and Yoshida. All foals were born in Kentucky or California.

With the addition of this dispersal, Fasig-Tipton will now accept additional approved broodmares and broodmare prospects. The dispersal and additional breeding stock entries will be offered in a separate session and catalog – named July Breeding Stock – prior to the start of the July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale on Monday, July 12.

Fasig-Tipton will accept breeding stock entries over the next few weeks. The catalog will go online and in the equineline sales catalogue app on July 1. Print catalogs will be available on-site at Fasig-Tipton at sale time.

“This dispersal offers buyers a quality group of mares, with well-bred foals at foot,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “It also allows us to open up broodmare and broodmare prospect entries to other prospective sellers that may prefer to sell now, instead of waiting for the fall breeding stock sales. It creates a unique mid-summer buying opportunity for breeders.”

Browning continued: “We have considered adding a breeding stock element to July for many years, and this year's session will be a good barometer to see if there is viable market for broodmares in July going forward.”

The mares and foals will sell on Monday, July 12, prior to the start of the July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale which will also be conducted that day.  The next day, on Tuesday, July 13, Fasig-Tipton will conduct The July Sale of Selected Yearlings.

A colt by Grade 1 sire Speightstown (Hip 128) topped the session when sold mid-day for $165,000 to Calumet Farm from the consignment of Stuart Morris, agent (video). Speightstown is the sire of 2020 Grade/Group 1 winners Charlatan, Lady Speightspeare, Echo Town, and Mozu Superflare.

The chestnut colt is out of Royal Ancestry, dam of stakes placed winner More Royalty. Royal Ancestry is a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Awesome Humor, herself the dam of stakes winner Thetrashmanscoming. The immediate family includes Grade 1 winners Emcee and Constitution. Hip 128 was bred in Kentucky by Highclere Inc.

The session's top broodmare prospect came in the form of Shippy (Hip 166), who sold for $130,000 to St Elias Stables from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. A 4-year-old stakes-winning and graded stakes-placed daughter of Midshipman, Shippy is from the immediate family of Grade/Group 1 winners Wild Rush, Hayil, and Shalaa. Shippy won twice in seven starts for owners Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, R. A. Hill Stable, and Joseph E. Besecker and trainer George Weaver, and earned $121,400.

Additional six-figure sales included two well-bred broodmare prospects:

  • American Dream (Hip 306), a 4-year-old winning daughter of American Pharoah purchased for $105,000 by Board Shorts Stables from the consignment of Bridie Harrison, agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds. A half-sister to graded stakes winner Dancing Solo, American Dream is out of a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Voodoo Dancer from the family of Grade 1 winner Pool Play.
  • Pakhet (Hip 62), a 5-year-old graded stakes placed winner by Cairo Price purchased for $100,000 by Peachtree Racing Stable from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Pakhet hails from the family of Group 1 winner Amadeus Wolf.

Speightstown Colt Tops Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Opener

A yearling colt by Speightstown (hip 128) brought the top price during Monday's opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale when bringing a final bid of $165,000 from Calumet Farm. Consigned by Stuart Morris, the yearling was one of four offerings to bring six figures during the day.

In all, 207 horses sold Monday for a gross of $3,956,300. The average was $19,113 and the median was $8,000. The buy-back rate for the session was 21.6%.

“I thought the activity today was very encouraging,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. “A lot of horses got moved at fair prices. It was a fairly consistent marketplace with no real surprises. There was significant demand for what were perceived to be the quality offerings and there was reasonable trade for the less expensive offerings. I'm not going to say it was crazy, but there was activity.”

The results remained fairly consistent with the opening session of the 2020 auction, which saw 180 head sell for $3,369,200 for an average of $18,718 and a median of $8,000. The buy-back rate for that session was 28.9%.

“I feel like it's a very fair market,” Morris said. “I don't know that I would call it robust or electric, but it's a very fair market. For what I walked up there with, I feel like my results were what they should have been. I got tough with a couple, but I've had several RNA's sold after the fact today, so I think it's a very healthy and fair market.”

Morris consigned Monday's session topper on behalf of his father Jeffry Morris's Highclere, which bred the yearling.

“He's a lovely colt with a lot of future in him,” Morris said. “He's a late April foal and had all of the right parts and pieces. He's very athletic with a good walk and great balance. He was good and correct, but he was definitely going to be a horse with a lot of improvement and growth in him because of his birthday. We were happy with the result and very flattered that an operation like Calumet bought him from us. We are wishing them the best of luck and we're hoping they can make him one of their stakes horses.”

The colt is out of Royal Ancestry (Distorted Humor), a full-sister to Grade I winner Awesome Humor and the dam of stakes-placed More Royalty (More Than Ready). Stuart Morris signed the ticket to acquire the then-11-year-old mare for $9,000 at the 2019 OBS Winter Mixed Sale.

“She was a beautiful mare with a great pedigree under her and some nice production,” Morris said of that purchase. “But she had had some production history issues around the time that we purchased her. We spoke to the folks taking care of her and felt that it was something we could manage and we got her bought for a fair price because of her production history. We got her home and she's just been an absolute star for us. She had this foal late last year and we didn't breed her back just because it was a late cover. She is back on the books this year and I believe she's going to go to Bolt d'Oro for my father.”

The Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale continues with what is expected to be a lively final session Tuesday.

“We've got a really nice group of horses to sell tomorrow,” Browning said Monday evening. “There are some high-quality offerings in the supplement and I think we'll have some fireworks tomorrow. And we'll have some really nice horses throughout the day.”

Bidding at Newtown Paddocks begins Tuesday at 10 a.m.
