$1,297 Payoff Despite Low-Odds Winners In Friday’s Stronach 5

There were 79 winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each returning $1,297.70.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Pimlico Race Course, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields and Gulfstream Park as well as an industry-low 12-percent takeout. Four of the five winners returned under $10 with the longest shot in the sequence going off at $6.90-1.

The Stronach 5 began with Pimlico's ninth race, a mile claiming event on the turf won by My Man Pots N Pans ($9.60) for trainer Kelly Rubley. Santa Anita's third race was next, an allowance event at six furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares that featured a heavy favorite in Lalic. The 4-year-old filly didn't disappoint at 6-5 for a $4.60 return.

Golden Gate's third race, the third leg of the Stronach 5, featured eight 2-year-olds going five furlongs after two late scratches. The winner was the 6-1 shot Love Candy ($15.80), a son of Danzing Candy trained by Ed Moger Jr.

The Stronach 5 concluded with two races from Gulfstream Park. In the eighth race, a turf event for allowance optional claimers at a mile, it was Drapes ($9), a daughter of American Pharoah, going to the winner's circle under jockey Edwin Gonzalez. In the ninth race, the final sequence of the Stronach 5, it was the 3-5 favorite Izhefrosted ($3.40) going gate-to-wire for an easy win.

Trio Of Turf Races Featured In Friday’s Stronach 5

Races from Pimlico Race Course, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields and Gulfstream Park, including three on the turf, comprise Friday's Stronach 5.

The multi-track wager, with an industry-low 12-percent takeout, begins at 4:47 p.m. with 11 claimers going a mile on the Pimlico turf course and is followed by a six-furlong turf event for allowance runners at Santa Anita Park featuring an 8-5 favorite in Hronis Racing LLC's Lalic, a 4-year-old French-bred filly seeking her third consecutive victory for trainer John Sadler.

The third leg of the Stronach 5 is a competitive maiden special weight event for 2-year-olds at five furlongs from Golden Gate. Highland Yard's Highland Ghost makes his debut as the 5-2 favorite. Stay Lit, a son of Stay Thirsty, debuts at 7-2 while North Sea is listed at 5-1.

The final two legs of the sequence will be run at Gulfstream. The eighth race, the fourth leg of the sequence, is an allowance optional claiming event at a mile on the turf for fillies and mares. Glen Hill Farm's Drapes (9-2) tries to make it two in a row off a 17-month layoff for trainer Thomas Proctor. Una Lima is the 2-1 morning-line favorite while leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. sends out Fuddled (3-1).

The Stronach 5 concludes with Race 9 at Gulfstream, a maiden event at six furlongs for fillies and mares. Izhefrosted is even-money in the morning line as the 3-year-old filly looks for her first win in six starts for trainer Victor Barboza Jr. Trainer Antonio Sano sends out Hashtag Lucky (9-2) with Edgard Zayas in the saddle and Gilberto Zerpa sends out Arindel's Science with Edwin Gonzalez in the saddle.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features Races From Four Tracks, 12-Percent Takeout

Friday's Stronach 5 will feature full fields, four tracks, and an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The popular wager, which had three winning tickets last week each worth $40,140, will feature racing from Pimlico Race Course, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields and an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5 begins with Pimlico's ninth race, an allowance event at five furlongs on the turf for 3-year-olds and up. The Colts Neck Stable's entry of Nothing Better and Town of Gold is the 2-1 favorite. Town of Gold returns off a five-month layoff. The 3-year-old finished second at Aqueduct Dec. 4 in the optional allowance claimer. Nothing Better also returns from a five-month layoff, Jorge Duarte Jr. saddles the entry. Sky's Not Falling was stakes-placed last year as a juvenile at Saratoga, Woodbine and Presque Isle Downs. He returns to the turf after a second-place finish on the main track at Pimlico May 6. Michael Trombetta trains.

Gulfstream's ninth race, a 7 ½ furlong event on the turf for maiden fillies and mares is next with Uptown Queen the 3-1 favorite for trainer David Fawkes. The daughter of Big Drama was second against similar Jan. 7 before finishing sixth Jan. 27 after a very wide trip breaking from the 12 post.

Santa Anita's third race, an optional claimer for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs on the turf, drew a field of eight led by 2-1 favorite Acai. Vegas Palm (5-2) is one of only two horses entered to win on the turf along with Peace Pipe.

The fourth leg of the Stronach 5 will be Golden Gate's third race, a mile event for 3-year-old maidens. Mattawa N That, second in four of his first five starts, is the 9-5 favorite. Command Sgt. Major drops a bit in class after a third-place finish and is listed at 2-1.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Santa Anita's fourth race, a maiden event for 3-year-olds at six furlongs. Marksman On Target (2-1) drops in from maiden special weight restricted company for trainer Gary Stute. The Roan Ranger (4-1) goes as a first-time gelding.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Includes Black-Eyed Susan, Pimlico Special

Friday's popular Stronach 5 will feature the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) and $250,000 Pimlico Special (G3) from Pimlico Race Course along with races from Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields.

The Stronach 5 will begin at approximately 5:12 p.m. with the Pimlico Special, a 1 3/16-mile event with five graded-stakes winners in the field of 11. The final leg of the Stronach 5 will be the Black-Eyed Susan at approximately 5:44 p.m.

Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) winner and Oaklawn Handicap (G2) runner-up Fearless, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., is the 9-5 favorite in the Special. Last Judgement, winner of the Challenger (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs over the winter, will be saddled by Mike Maker and ridden by Jose Ortiz. Cordmaker, third in the last two runnings of the Pimlico Special, looks for the third time to be the charm.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the second and third legs. Golden Gate's third race, a maiden special weight event for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 mile on the turf, drew a field of seven including Batukhan, who was a troubled ninth in his turf debut in March at Santa Anita. The gelding made his debut last year in France for Andre Fabre. Twice the Price makes his turf debut after finishing second or third in five of his eight career starts.

Next up is Santa Anita's fourth race, a maiden special weight event at six furlongs for California bred or sired fillies and mares. Omg It's Jessica gets blinkers after finishing second twice and third once in four career starts. Trainer Bill Spawr saddles first-time starter Feeling Grazeful.

Gulfstream's 10th race, a $12,500 claiming event at five furlongs on the turf, drew 10 including Gran Malbec, second in both of his last two turf starts at the distance. Royal Asset makes his first start since December for trainer Kelly Breen, who also saddles No Nay Maybe.

The Stronach 5 concludes with the Black-Eyed Susan, 1 1/8 mile event for 3-year-old fillies. Beautiful Gift arrives from California after finishing second in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) after a victory in the Santa Ysabel (G3). Miss Leslie, saddled by Maryland's leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez, enters off a victory in the 'Win & In' Weber City Miss April 24. Todd Pletcher will saddle Iced Latte, Steve Asmussen will send out Willful Woman, Chad Brown saddles The Grass Is Blue, and Mike Maker has entered Army Wife.
