Happy Days at Del Mar: Baffert Street Sense Filly a ‘Rising Star’

Happier (f, 3, Street Sense–On My Way, by Giant’s Causeway), a $800,000 KEESEP yearling graduate, ran to the money in her unveiling for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert at Del Mar Friday evening, earning ‘TDN Rising Star’ honors.

The 6-5 favorite shot out to the front from her inside draw and led through fractions of :22.71 and :45.89. She widened the margin as they turned for home and kept on rolling down the stretch to graduate by 3 1/4 lengths over stablemate Himiko (American Pharoah).

Happier was the most expensive of 61 yearlings by Street Sense to change hands in 2018. Baffert, of course, also trains Street Sense’s four-time GISW and fellow ‘Rising Star’ McKinzie.

On My Way, a $32,000 KEENOV purchase by Waymore’s F. Thomas Conway in foal to Cape Blanco (Ire) in 2012, also produced King Zachary (Curlin), GSW, $366,120; and has a yearling colt by Frosted. She was bred to Vino Rosso for 2021.

The winner’s granddam is a half-sister to the dam of recent Hong Kong champion Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d’Oro) and her great-granddam is a half-sister to the mighty Korveya (Riverman), whose foals included European champions Bosra Sham (Woodman) and Hector Protector (Woodman), as well as additional G1 winner Shanghai (Procida).

Baffert Doesn’t Like Inside Post, Will Scratch McKinzie From Saturday’s Bing Crosby

McKinzie will not run in this Saturday's Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar, trainer Bob Baffert told the Daily Racing Form on Wednesday. The 5-year-old son of Street Sense drew post four of ten in the six-furlong sprint contest, and Baffert doesn't believe the horse will be able to make his best effort from that spot.

“If I had an outside post, I was going to take a chance at it,” Baffert told drf.com. “But he's down in the four-hole, and this track's been playing weird. It's real loose and deep. A horse like him wouldn't have a chance.”

Instead, Baffert plans to wait for the G2 Pat O'Brien over seven furlongs on Aug. 29. Though the “Win and You're In” race offers a berth to the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Baffert's long-term goal for McKinzie is still the Breeders' Cup Classic over 1 1/4 miles.

Street Sense Filly Remains Perfect on Turf at Indiana Grand

4th-Indiana Grand, $32,500, Alw, 7-13, (NW2LX), 3yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16mT, 1:43.42, fm.
NASTY (f, 3, Street Sense–Valiant Passion {GISP, $132,900}, by Lion Heart), firming into 4-5 favoritism to build on an eight-length graduation when trying turf and two turns for the first time June 18, LNJ Foxwoods’s Nasty traveled like a winner every step of a Monday allowance at Indiana Grand and came home a measured one-length winner. Wrangled back to sit in a stalking second beneath Fernando de la Cruz, the $230,000 Keeneland September yearling acquisition traveled strongly down the back and was allowed to stride into the lead nearing the end of the second turn. Roused in upper stretch, Nasty kicked into a clear lead and perhaps idled a stride or two once making the front, but she kept on nicely to maintain a safe one-length margin over her chief market rival Sister Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) and remain on an upward trajectory. Nasty faced a pair of talented fillies in two main-track appearances to start her career, finishing fourth to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Ain’t No Elmers (Goldencents) on her Feb. 15 debut at the Fair Grounds before coming home fifth to Casual (Curlin) in an Oaklawn maiden Apr. 11. She could scarcely have been more impressive last time, settling a bit off the speed before whooshing home to graduate by eight emphatic lengths. One of four winners to race from as many to race from her dam, the 2010 GI Spinaway S. third-place finisher, Nasty hails from the female family of GI Breeders’ Cup winner Skywalker and has a foal half-brother by Good Magic (Curlin). Sales history: $230,000 Ylg ’18 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 4-2-0-0, $42,900. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

TDN Rising Star Cazadero takes the GIII Bashford Manor

Stonestreet Stables homebred Cazadero made good on his ‘TDN Rising Star’ tag with a dominant victory in the GIII Bashford Manor S. at Churchill Downs Saturday. Demolishing the field by 8 3/4 lengths in his five-panel unveiling beneath the Twin Spires May 29, the Steve Asmussen pupil was heavily favored to repeat in this first juvenile graded stakes of the season. Breaking sharply, Cazadero tracked from a two-wide fourth as longshot County Final (Oxbow) blazed through a :21.24 first quarter. Ranging up two wide on the far turn, the bay took charge in mid-stretch and powered clear under a vigorous hand ride from Ricardo Santana to win as he pleased.

“He’s been a very fast horse in his training and handled everything very well today,” said conditioner Steve Asmussen.

“He was a later foal but we knew he was wickedly fast,” said Stonestreet principal Barbara Banke. “He grew up on our farm and has showed that speed in his two starts.”

Pedigree Notes:

Cazadero is the 32nd graded winner and 69th black-type scorer for champion Street Sense. He is bred on the same Street Sense/Forest Wildcat cross as Grade I victress Callback. Barbara Banke’s operation purchased the winner’s MGSW & GISP dam Wild Gams for $1-million at the 2008 KEENOV Sale. She is also the dam of SW Mt. Brave (Malibu Moon) and GSP Almost Famous (Unbridled’s Song). Wild Gams did not produce a foal in 2019, but had a Good Magic colt Mar. 2 of this year.
